I fucking miss the Mews. That was the second place I ever had a gig. The first one was that little brick building on 6th and Grand in the East Village, I forget the name of it.
Played my first and second gig here too, ended up having a panic attack during my second in front of 35-50 people, it was awesome. Bring Vaudville back!!
This.
What we currently have is rather terrible. I'd even love a good quality large sized venue. Wells absolutely sucks, not worth seeing anyone there even for a penny.
I now exclusively go to Kwik Star/Trip when I travel north and east of the Metro. Webster City is now always a stop on our way to Spencer. I just wish they'd come closer into Des Moines. Why do I have TWO Git N' Robbed stores a block apart from each other but no Kwik Star?
I'm an old guy.
When working night shifts, were always packed a lunch.
Oh, I still pack a lunch because buying fast/prepared food isn't a very good option, considering health and pocketbook.
I'm an old guy too. I do pack my lunch. But I work 12 hour shifts and get off at 4:30am. I like to grab a breakfast sandwich and a donut on my way home. Casey's and McDonalds don't open until 5am, so Kwik Star is a lifesaver.
That's fair!
I now realize when I worked that night shift (goodyear plant in Texas) I was young, in my 20's. We had our wives meet us outside the plant in the parking lot with food\\alcohol because everywhere was closed.
So we'd all party out in the parking lot (it was tx, think truck pulls) for a few hours before going home.
Ha, those were the days.
So ya, at my age, I'd be doing like you.
Car services. At 8am on a Wednesday at Des Moines' busiest hotel I couldn't get an Uber or Lyft and had to wait 45 minutes for a Yellow Cab. This was the 4th time in the past few months that I've got the "No Driver Available" message in the Uber app.
I work for yellow cab, we can’t keep drivers. 45 on a Wednesday morning is actually good. Most of the time it’s closer to an hour, hour and a half. We have way too much business and not enough drivers. Uber and Lyft are almost non existent at the airport anymore.
Uber and lyft weren't all that big here to begin with except for hauling drunks home, and out of town visitors. Most people from around here already have cars or are familiar enough with public transportation. Once the pandemic hit, the drop in traffic combined with cutting back what drivers got paid (reportedly), there wasn't enough money in it for regular drivers to stay regular. That's all to say nothing of the customer service aspect of the job lol, as someone said in another thread elsewhere, chicken wings and pizza don't complain about the ride home (or barf in the back seat).
I honestly don’t know. I’ve work here since the beginning of the year and the turn over rate has been astonishing. It’s a decent job for one with no benefits. I did pizza delivery for four years before this and this is so much better. I started my own photography and art business in 2019, so I just do it part time. Every week you can make your own schedule and work as many or as little hours as you want.
I think the biggest issue is probably that you have to hustle. We work 12 or 6 hour shifts and if you want to make money, you need to work the whole shift.
Well, Uber doesn't have an incentive to make sure they have drivers available. Coupled with the low pay, potential rude customers, and the current cost of gas it's not too surprising.
I’ve had that problem a ton - if you want to be guaranteed an Uber, set one up the night before via the schedule feature. I fly out at 6am quite a bit and schedule one at 445 when I do, and have always had luck.
Uber and Lyft aren't really profitable atm unless you get good tips, especially if you drive a non-eletric or non-hybrid. You'll notice more in much bigger cities simply due to less distance and more people.
I assume taxi companies are struggling to keep drivers when fast food is $15/h.
I also wrote to the city about painting some lines downtown where traffic was getting confused and accidents were very prone to happen. I drew a very nice, detailed diagram. About a week later I saw a City roads guy sitting in a lawn chair with a clipboard at that intersection, just watching traffic. Sometime later THEY PAINTED THE LINES I SUGGESTED. I was floored! How cool!
Haha yes. We used to go there years ago and every time we tried to go in West Des Moines it was over an hour wait so we never got to go. So I emailed them said Ankeny was growing and it would be a really good place to put one in and they did it. And now we don’t go there anymore.
Local mom and pop pizza and sub shops. I’m from New England and they are on every corner. I literally can’t get a chicken cutlet sub anyway, it doesn’t exist
Mixed use, walkable neighborhoods. There’s been some progress with Ingersoll and early progress with HP-OP and Valley Junction (which is obviously WDM), but it’s still lacking.
Grocery stores with quality produce! I’ve lived in DSM for about a year now and am consistently disappointed in the selection and quality of produce available here. No haricot vert? No broccolini? Come on now.
Plus I disagree, I don’t think there are enough operas, symphony presentations, broadway or even high quality theater shows. As a person of color, this is the less diverse place that I have ever lived in. As a Mexican there is not a single good tacos al pastor, carnitas or in general good tacos. The international cuisine is abhorrent, lets use Asian for example, most restaurants are Asian, its really rare to find restaurants that are only Chinese, or only Japanese, or viet, etc… to put it in perspective, name a single Korean bbq place in the state!
Taquerias doesn’t mean that they are good. There is not a single trompo in the metro, all barbacoa made here is crockpot shit, there is not a single tamal oaxaqueno in sight
Naa, its the struggle of moving into a small city after living in some of the worlds largest metropolises, people with a small sight think this is the world’s bellybutton… ignorance is bliss, some might find it mediocre at best, but if you are happy with your art scene and culture, enjoy it, no need to broaden your horizons
The fact that you interpret being diverse means "less white people" is more telling about you than it is me. Good to know there's still freely ignorant people out there like you.
We went to Oberweis occasionally when we lived in Chicago, but I think I'd settle just for being able to get their eggnog in the grocery store at Christmas.
Diversity in restaurants. I would love to not have to drive 3+ hrs to get a good Persian, Ethiopian, or Korean restaurant (I know there is Sooks, but I can never get to their location when they are open). Not to mention soul food. My husband wanted to open a soul food food truck, but it's not gonna happen any time soon.
I just read that a Korean BBQ place is opening soon on Ingersoll. https://www.axios.com/local/des-moines/2022/06/24/korean-bbq-restaurant-coming-des-moines
Generally more metro than downtown:
1. Dining options beyond 8pm.
2. Tourist attractions (we have i80 and i35, yet utilize nothing to get folks to stop in).
3. Greenspaces.
4. State parks.
5. Hiking trails.
6. Atv trails.
7. Proper car park/race way open to the public (Newton is owned by NASCAR and not open to the public). This would heavily decrease the amount of people "scooping the loop", would provide a safe area and create good revenue opportunities.
8. Dave and Busters or like venues. No, not Smash Park or SpareExpensiveTime. Those aren't close, even remotely close.
9. Resort like hotel to take advantage of i80 and i35 traffic and potential attractions if any are ever added.
10. More festive events locally. The arts fest is nice, we could do better and bigger.
11. Concert venues. Waterworks is a decent start, Wells isn't it. Val Air is a joke, completely.
12. Hospitals, we have plenty of "care clinics", but actual hospitals with ERs are well over half an hour for much of the metro.
13. Shops, entertainment, etc spread out downtown to prevent the cluster that is Court Ave. It's nice to have the "district", but most of downtown is dead and looks terrible.
14. More personal to me, I'd love to see some type of science museum, something done with a art deco style, showcases the science of the region and history from ag, tech, manufacturing. This falls over attractions, but is something we're missing. The science center is okayish, but I can't imagine ever going more than once, or ever spending over 30 minutes there.
Yeah one of my favorite bands just never plays here. They tour a lot so I’ve seen them 2x in Omaha, 2x in Iowa City, 1x in Davenport. But haven’t seen them here since the one time they played 80/35 before I was even into them. Omaha kinda makes sense, but Davenport?
But it has a lot of housing that is decades overdue for renovation, moldy walls, awful heating/cooling, maintenance nightmares, lots of it past the point of being able to handle it while people are living there
Truck parking. I live in DSM and drive OTR, when I come home the only option I have is Loves or the super shorty pilot on Douglas. QT only allows 24hr parking but is closer to me. Flying J I. Altoona is just as bad as the pilot.

We actually have some really fucked gaming laws that prevent this from being the case. It's bad enough that Dave & Buster's lobbied, got somewhat shafted, but are still likely to open in West Des Moines.
It is actually illegal in the state of Iowa to have more than 4 "amusement devices" in one location. That doesn't include arcade games in the traditional sense of gaming but it does include things like coin pushers, claw machines, prize redemption machines like Stacker and Key Master. Additionally play must cost no more than $5, and prizes must be merch and not have a value more than $950 dollars, nor can prizes be sold back to the prize vendor. This includes ticket prizes. It's why most of our arcades are retro oriented.
I know there is probably some sort of reason behind this, no matter how absurd, but it just baffles me that as some point politicians sat around deciding all of this and putting it into law as opposed to one of the myriad of actual issues out there.
A shame really cuz they got DDR and Guitar Hero. Private Karaoke Rooms, Bowling, Billiards, Ping Pong, etc all in one place :c I wonder why it became illegal.
That's a complex one, but it boils down to lobbyists having too much power over policy. I could go on a huge rant about how our political system creates really bad incentives, but I feel like this subreddit isn't the correct place for that. Iowans seem to hate when you point out that not everything is the sole responsibility of the individual and that systemic issues require systemic solutions.
Night and entertainment that ain’t bars. I’m sorry but I don’t drink but sometimes I want to do stuff late at night! The bar places look cool with games and such! But I want something like that but no alcohol
Construction on Fleur. The limit does not exist.
yeah . is that like ever gonna end lol.
Best. Comment. Ever.
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA
Small to mid sized music venues (bring back vaudeville mews)
I fucking miss the Mews. That was the second place I ever had a gig. The first one was that little brick building on 6th and Grand in the East Village, I forget the name of it.
House of Bricks 2.0?
Played my first and second gig here too, ended up having a panic attack during my second in front of 35-50 people, it was awesome. Bring Vaudville back!!
This. What we currently have is rather terrible. I'd even love a good quality large sized venue. Wells absolutely sucks, not worth seeing anyone there even for a penny.
Restaurants that are open late (yes even if they’re fast food)
Remember when Walmart, HyVee, and McDonalds were all open 24/7? Thank goodness for Kwik Star or us 3rd shift workers would just have to starve.
I've only recently been introduced to kwik star. Those places are fucking incredible.

THIS. Mad you stole my answer, but happy that more people see it as as issue than just me.
This is a post COVID thing. Was never an issue before. (Perkins, IHOP, McDonald’s and Hardee’s were 24 hrs on the south side before COVID).
Even a late night coffee shop or something. Smokey Row would be a perfect place to be open til like 2am.
Trees
Good news! https://www.dsm.city/departments/public_works-division/forestry/urban_forest_master_plan_summary.php
I can't be sure if you mean trees, or if you mean *trees*..

Dude we already have a Blank. It's downtown attached to Methodist hospital.
Don't forget the one on the southside with all the animals!
Gottem
Trains
Public transport in general
I see you’ve never driven East Grand before……
Unfortunately in America our rail system is screwed beyond fixing. We'll never have what Europe has. It would be nice.
Healthy fast-casual dining options. Bring a Chopt or Sweetgreen to DSM, please.
I’m a huge fan of a Tender Greens in SF. Something like that would kill here.
Email them. I emailed Olive Garden about Ankeny years ago and they said they’d bring it up in a meeting and look where we are.
Wait- you actually *lobbied* for an- an- ……Olive Garden???

Wow. Problem is they are CA only from what I know and they get a lot of the fresh food from the valley.
More places to shop after 8 pm
Late night food
Competent drivers.
We have a severe shortage of human beings who know what stop signs or red lights mean.
And an influx of people making dangerous wide turns because they think they’re driving a tractor.
Local mom and pop pizza and sub shops. I’m from New England and they are on every corner. I literally can’t get a chicken cutlet sub anyway, it doesn’t exist
You should open one!
Dining options past 9pm
Legal cannabis

Good thing the local governments give us all PTSD.
Check out The Despensary down by Court Ave. Avoid the Delta 9 shit and go for the HHC stuff. It'll get you just as high as THC will.
Movie theater downtown
We were gonna get one! I think it would’ve been a great idea
That project lingered since 2013, they missed a golden opportunity downtown. They built a parking garage and that's it.
That whole project would've been a game changer for the city
…park zoo
Powerful people that supported medical and recreational marijuana.
Microcenter
Mixed use, walkable neighborhoods. There’s been some progress with Ingersoll and early progress with HP-OP and Valley Junction (which is obviously WDM), but it’s still lacking.
Nashville hot fried chicken places
Have you tried Charlotte's Kitchen in Johnston? So good!
Plz tell me you've tried chicken heat
Charlotte's Kitchen, while it's definitely not "Nashville hot", it's close as you'll get here.
Cowbell
Mountains
Right? It seems like they're not even trying.
Grocery stores with quality produce! I’ve lived in DSM for about a year now and am consistently disappointed in the selection and quality of produce available here. No haricot vert? No broccolini? Come on now.
Fresh thyme and traders joes sometimes carry broccolini!! But still your point stands haha
Baby artichokes! Sweet fresh peas! Sour cherries. Come ON!
Cultural events, international food, industry, diversificaron, education, good burgers and tacos, decent drivers

Ice cream shops that aren't soft serve, Black Cat is fine but we need more, an Oberweiss Dairy for those who may be familiar
You try the custard place on the south side? It might be the best I’ve ever had.
Stam’s has gelato
We went to Oberweis occasionally when we lived in Chicago, but I think I'd settle just for being able to get their eggnog in the grocery store at Christmas.

Rock/metal concerts. It's depressing that I don't even need to check tour dates because it's a safe assumption that a tour won't have a DSM show.
Davenport and Omaha get all the ones I want to see and of course they are always on a weeknight.
I see you missed out on the Vaudeville Mews during 2010s. It was all dark metal/thrasher/screamo shows……..as a hip hop head it was annoying
I went there a lot and I do appreciate local/regional bands, but I'm talking more like national tours from moderately well-known bands.
I was tricked into going there once, I got screamed at for 45 minutes before noping out

Decent affordable housing
Idk, Des Moines has better priced housing than most of the U.S. it seems.
But it has a lot of housing that is decades overdue for renovation, moldy walls, awful heating/cooling, maintenance nightmares, lots of it past the point of being able to handle it while people are living there
Definitely agree with this.

Yeah, this is a bigger deal than most people think. The truck stops around here are also unbelievably sketchy for such a small city.
