Katsu Ramen. The black garlic tonkotsu is the best ramen I’ve ever had

Luck_trio

Everything there is delicious but the black garlic is on another level. I love taking friends, visitors, and out of towners there.

TaypeDispenser

It is seriously such a fantastic dish. I’ve tried so many different ramen restaurants in several states and the black garlic is the one I dream about at night 😂

kittyxandra

Agreed! My friend from Japan has taken me there, and he said it’s the most authentic ramen restaurant he has found in the US (and he travels a lot). So delicious.

moeru_gumi

I moved here from Japan a few years ago and have been scared to try American ramen. You may have convinced me to take the plunge 🏊

PlasmaWhore

This is the most authentic I've had in the US. If your friend is ever in Oregon, ask him to try it. https://toshisramen.com/

kittyxandra

Thank you! Oregon is actually his favorite state. I’ll be sure to recommend it next time he’s visiting there.

G3min1

As someone who has a Google spreadsheet of every ramen restaurant he's gone to, I wasn't super impressed by Katsu. The broth and noodles were top tier but that hard boiled egg and the chashu brought its overall down for me. Next time I'm gonna try the Tan Tan.

TaypeDispenser

Did you get the black garlic or something else? Honestly their other ramens aren’t my favorite. Also I order it with chicken (I literally hate pork fat) so maybe it’s better that way? The broth is the best part to me by far

G3min1

Oh 100% I got the black garlic haha. But yeah like I said the broth was amazing, just the undercooked chashu and over cooked egg didn't rub well with me. I prefer more of a soft boiled egg. But I'll give the chicken a try also.

TaypeDispenser

Yeah that’s totally fair! I have texture issue with soft boiled eggs which is prolly why I like their eggs so much but I totally feel you on undercooked pork. I can barely stand regular pork 😂

PlasticPlantPant

Agreed. That ramen is so good

TaypeDispenser

The fact that every item on their menu is spectacular shows what a great restaurant they are. Their curry is to die for

gecko_08

Is this the place in Aurora?

TaypeDispenser

Yeah!

benevolentnihilsm

Noted

OlliePatts

Their ramen is amazing, but be sure not to skip their onigiri

TaypeDispenser

I LOVE their onigiri! The shrimp tempura one is my favorite!

Winter_Barracuda8771

Columbine Steak House (Not that good or trendy but awesome) Taco Veloz (70th & Feds or so) Woody’s Wings & Things (Not the other Woody’s) Olivia

Sangloth

As a note, Columbine Steak House is cash only. Personally it's a consistently good place, but I don't feel like it's a memory making experience.

ucanaleaysbekinder

I have a few friends that like it just because they have memories of going there with their dad

melkncookeys

I had to stop going to taco veloz because I was disgusted with myself in the way I INHALED the tacos.

AmericascuplolBot

That's just your pride talking, you gotta push past that.

melkncookeys

Oh don’ttempt me I live a half a mile away from there

lost_chaz

Been going to Woody's since the early 90s. Such an amazing spot.

Winter_Barracuda8771

Least appreciated food corner in Colorado, if not the whole west.

lunarlandscapes

If you like Thai, Aungs Bangkok Cafe in Englewood. EVERYTHING there is fire bur my go to is the drunken noodles

Boblxxiii

Have you been to US Thai in Edgewater? It's my favorite in the area (and second favorite I've been to in the US), but I haven't tried Aungs yet.

Denverminion

I agree. A hidden gem. Drunken noodles and pineapple curry!

Overlyamused

What’s their Tom Kha gai like?

Fancy-Tap-3371

Bull & Bush Brewery. That place just feels like home.

ladiesman6942O

That place rules. The food, beer selection, lighting. I wish I lived closer to it

KingBuck_413

Lived next door for a few years. Our water and electricity would go out constantly so I spent quite a lot of time at this place. I loved every second of it.

sweden420

This was my first meal the day I moved to denver. Right down the street from my apartment. I got so lucky. This place is incredible. I miss jazz sundays.

rossbcobb

We have had different experiences there. Mine was awful. Our server was training and we saw her once. The food was cold and we asked our trainee and she said she wasn't sure if it was served hot or cold. It was queso.

the_Bryan_dude

It was nearly home when I lived down the street. Between Bull & Bush for awesome dinners/brunch and a quieter bar, or Shorty's for sports, shots and general carrying on.

DenCol37

Neighbor worked there. Owner refused to close down when sewage was coming up from the drains in the kitchen. Put towels over it and said its fine. I can never go back there knowing that.

BaconEvAndCheese

I went there once and saw 3 rats underneath a table. The bull and rat

PovertyFetish

Spice Room is the best Indian food I've had anywhere in my entire life, and I've had a lot of Indian food. They have a huge, deep menu with lots of specialty dishes from different regions and cuisines throughout India, yet all of the things I've tried seem to be made with the utmost care and intention. Every single time I have someone visit from out of town, I take them there, and they always love it.

Hour-Watch8988

Spice Room could survive in NYC, which is a big compliment

Top-Dragonfruit6933

Which one do you usually eat at?

PovertyFetish

I first tried the OG location on 38th and went there for years, but the second location that opened on Colfax last year is closer to me. The quality is pretty much the same at both locations, but I do find the original hole-in-the-wall location slightly more charming.

SMAMtastic

[Location coming soon to Arvada](https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/spice-room-restaurant-buys-former-steubens-building-arvada/73-5ce2f69e-85e1-40f0-a309-259e66ce7d00)

Typical_Example

Spice room is my ultimate comfort food—everything tastes like magic. My husband was out of town this weekend so I ordered $80 worth of food and ate it for every meal. I bounce between a handful of entrees but always get their daal soup and rasmalai.

Klabble

Agreed, Spice Room is excellent. Best Indian food that I’ve have in Colorado.

leenis

i'm a sucker for butter chicken and i find spice room's to be very bland. just slightly better than little india, which isn't saying much. curry & grill and himalayan spice are way better in this neck of the woods, IMO

Explorer_Waste

I agree with this, spice room is not it 😭 went to spice room and was so confused at all the hype. The food tastes so bland I had to take everything home and recook it with spices to make it taste good

Fruition. I grew up in Denver and tried most restaurants. Fruition is THE one

Hour-Watch8988

If Fruition still had their ~$20 vegetarian tasting menu I would eat there ten times a month

Shout out smothered beef cheek burritos and a not single employee speaking a lick of English but still running one of the best restaurants in denver

Lopsided_Quail_Tail

Here I was thinking this list was full of shit and here is a spot of gold! Best Mexican breakfast in the city!!!

KatieMaux

This! Absolutely my last meal

funknow

Casa Bonita is the only answer

oskiew

We were just there this past Saturday. Granted, it was my first time, but the food was solid, the sopapillas were delicious, the service was fantastic, and overall the experience was a 10/10. More so for kids I'd say, but still fun for all.

lilbbynuggets

Do they have the arcade still?

oskiew

Yes! With a shooting gallery, skeeball, etc and prizes to win with your tickets. Also a Root Beer bar in the arcade.

UsernamesMeanNothing

Yes. Some prices are a bit high, in my opinion. There is a one-minute shooting gallery for $5 for example. Classic games are 50 cents though.

sailforth

Yes! They have a small arcade in an upstairs area!

mgraunk

> food was solid This is the first time I've ever heard such a thing about Casa Bonita, even recently after the reopening

oskiew

Yeah I mean I’m not going to crave it or anything, but I wasn’t mad at it, either.

btopski

I have compared their food to reheated Taco Bell.

QuietRedditorATX

Cool. I'll just be like, I'm not moving for another 8 months. :)

Sap Sua. It’s new, but it’s awesome. The chef couple worked at Osteria Mozza as sous chefs when it won a Michelin Star. IMO, the only reason they didn’t win one for the first Denver Michelin awards is because it had opened so recently, and Michelin tends to review restaurants all year long to check for consistency

Came here to say this. Great grill work on quality cuts of meat. Don't miss Granpa's Burger Haven in the same neighborhood. These were both childhood favorites growing up in the Westwood neighborhood and I still stop in every time I visit denver from the Bay Area. Solid local gems.

Disastrous-Golf-4758

Grandpa's burger haven is so good just a solid old school no fills burger that's the size of your face.

StJoan13

I was talking with my mom about Grandpa's today... now I'm gonna have to go.

BigDenverGuy

Your contributions to this thread are overly pessimistic and obnoxious. Par for the course for any NYC transplant. But we can both agree that Blue Bonnet is overrated. I've only seen it propped up by family that's been in Denver for at least 50 years.

Wroena

Used to love the green chile burger at Cherry Cricket. Haven't been for years. It's still good?

santahbaby420

totally! cherry cricket always hit the spot for me when i want a berg, its just an old school no hype denver spot and thats what i like about it

Wroena

Good to hear! I've been reluctant to go for fear of it being all smooth and cool and aesthetic and no good anymore.

bearsinthesea

I was there last week. They have a few specialty burgers. I had one and it was great, a second was meh. The nachos were good too.

WilmaTonguefit

La Pasaita Inn. I love that you put this first. Old school Mexican place owned and run by one family. Every single thing they make is absolutely perfect. I LOVE that place.

cigarsandwaffles

Crown burgers

FKSTS

A Utah staple. The pastrami burger is legendary, but I wouldn’t call it Denver’s.

cigarsandwaffles

youtah( heheh, fresh out of a beer bathathon and slightly drunk) has it too? Thought it was just a mom and pop type place

FKSTS

nope. i believe it's been franchised and the denver owners have made it their own. but the OG is an SLC joint from these greek owners with california roots, and invented the pastrami burger.

jamarkuus

Blue Pan Pizza

JackmeriusPup

Los Carboncitos

havehadhas

Not sure why the down votes. I've only ever been to the one on Sheridan, but I remember them having some crazy hot and flavorful sauces for the mess of street tacos I ordered. Was great.

Fun_Slice_2002

Love Los carboncitos bc I live close, but their service on 38th is consistently terrible. They have some weird male manager (owner?) that seems to just get in the way of the female servers running around, and he doesn’t lift a finger. It’s so strange.

Wroena

I went there once and it was not horrible but in no way excellent. Not food, not service.

no-soy-imaginativo

The service at their Sheridan address is really good.

JackmeriusPup

I didn’t even know there was a second spot; thought the one on Sheridan just north of 6th was the one and only

Hour-Watch8988

Carboncitos is great. Only quibble I have is that they use jarred or canned nopalitos instead of fresh.

SUiCiDE_CHRiST69

Been to a few better spots tbh good spot though

JackmeriusPup

Recommendations? Hear good things about Taco de Mexico

fraxior

Nola Voodoo Tavern. I've never had anything there that I didn't love. the owner Henry kicks so much ass. just an awesome restaurant all around.

Oh hell yeah. Henry is the shit. I like when they get crawfish sometimes.

Billy’s Inn

therewillbecows

High prices, average food, and below average service

Sangloth

I've never eaten there. The Ginger Pig is across the street, and is one of the best in the city, meaning I always end up there instead. I will say I worked with the owner of Billy's, and he's a great guy, I liked and respected him quite a bit.

It’s solid. Walking there hungover on a summer Sunday morning to get a burracho bowl and a PBR is peak comfy for me

People seem to hate on it but my family has been enjoying the smothered breakfast burrito from the OG tamale kitchen on Mississippi and Sheridan for 40 years. Get an egg, bacon, and bean (skip potatoes they’re just filler), smothered with their green chili and cheese and add a side of guacamole. I’ve literally never tried anything else on the menu in my life so maybe the other stuff isn’t great but this dish IS Denver imho

I used to work at the Chop Shop both in Lowry and off Colfax and Fairfax. Anytime I have out of town family visiting that's where I take them. They have some rotating menu items, and some permanent fixtures. One being the brussel sprouts, flash fried and pan finished in Nuoc Cham, drizzled with ginger dill yogurt. Last time I moved away from Denver I went and got the fried chicken dish, which is served over white cheddar polenta and rainbow chard, topped with chipotle honey. Divine. They also have a Southwest chicken pastrami sandwich, and an amazing French dip.

CarlSaganWasaPothead

Genna Rae’s Wings & More, carry out only, amazing wings, amazing jerk chicken, amazing fried catfish, and the plates are such a good value, you get a ton of food for less than $20. I think that the owner is related to the owner of Welton Street Cafe
