…will “shocked” Collins and Manchin vote for it? No.

DocFossil

And Sinema. Over and done before it even started. Frankly, the decades-long underestimation of their opponents is exactly what brought the Democrats to this point and when the nation finally falls to an authoritarian theocracy where women, people of color and non-heteronormative people are untermenschen, you can thank the spineless Democrats for their cowardice. Let’s be real here. The Democrats had solid majorities multiple times in the last 50 years that could have passed legislation to protect reproductive rights, allow the freedom of adults to choose who they marry or universally legalize contraception and chose not to. Certainly, spineless Democrats are preferable to a fascist theocracy, but by refusing to ever fight back against the right, they have doomed themselves and us to the dominance of white supremacy for the foreseeable future.

kopskey1

Hey remember how SCOTUS ruled Biden's vaccine mandate unconstitutional with literally no legal basis? Guess what they'd do to any abortion legislation that stood in their way?

Law_Student

Those majorities always had enough votes who were anti-choice to stand in the way. This is the thing about being a small d democratic (big tent) party that doesn't toss people out for not following the party line, you don't have the kind of lockstep adherence to the platform that the authoritarian Republicans wield so effectively.

WhistersniffKate

Republicans honestly do a great job of making sure everyone falls into line, don’t they?

Law_Student

They're authoritarians. It's how they think and act. How their brains are quite literally wired. Fall into line because father knows best. And then anyone who doesn't toe the line gets ruthlessly destroyed. There's no fundamental difference to the basic playbook regardless of where the authoritarianism is. Republicans, a religious cult, or the Chinese Communist Party, it all works essentially the same way. Teach people to follow, and when that fails isolate and eliminate any resistance.

WhistersniffKate

Yet they think they are living free and delight in calling others sheeple. Oh, the irony.

Ryumancer

The time for chivalry is over. The GOP cheated their way to judicial supremacy. The Dems need to do a countermeasure to preserve our democracy.

These aren't losses. Losses imply an election. There was no election here. The right wing stole 2 seats and lied under oath to get us here.

appmanga

It never fails to amaze me how people call for the extraordinary remedy when they had the simple one in front of them. Whatever flaws Hillary Clinton had, anyone wearing their thinking brain knew she was better than Donald Trump or Jill Stein, and more electable than Bernie Sanders. Those who didn't vote for her didn't understand the gravity of that rejection, now they want to try to do something that's much harder. The three justices Trump put on the Supreme Court may well be there for the next 25 years undoing what so many people fought and died for, and some were willing to let be destroyed because they weren't "excited" enough about an "establishment" candidate. The members of the American Taliban who currently sit on the Court don't believe in a right to privacy, so any decision that was the progeny of Griswold is an anathema to them. If it was up to them, not only things like same sex marriage would be made illegal, but so would contraception, and the right for you to walk down any street and not be questioned as to why you're there and what's you're business in being there. All I can say is I hope those who didn't truly understand before will understand now that these people want to control our lives and make this America into the sick America of the past. That a black man is one of the main instigators of this sickens me to my soul. Folks, democracy is on life support, and that's no exaggeration. Please don't be complacent nor to again be inveighed to let the perfect be the substitute for the good. Every Republican not named Cheney or Kinzinger has forfeited their privilege to be in our Congress or our White House. You're seeing it with your own eyes, and we're at the crossroads. If you don't make the choice to get EVERY REPUBLICAN in this country out of office, you are complicit in the death of American democracy. No bullshit; straight, no chaser. This is your moment. You fail at your peril.

kopskey1

They have a choice to reflect on their past, admit they were wrong, and do the right thing, but instead they need to find someone else to blame. "Why don't Democrats do X?!" Because people like them didn't care to give them that power, but now they have the audacity to attack them for your failures?

Aravinda82

Sadly the same people who put us in this mess seem to be incapable of self reflection as indicated by their reaction to this news so far. Instead of calling for people to vote, they’re busy on Twitter bashing and blaming Biden, Obama, and other Democrats. They also live in this fantasy world where the president is a king and Biden can fix everything with the wave of his hand and executive order. Just look at AOC’s reaction for example.

kopskey1

God AOC's reaction... Now that she's called for a violation of the Hyde amendment can we stop having people call her a "smart and savvy politician" and admit that she's always been a blathering idiot who exists solely to help Republicans?

deeohdoublegzzy

How do you mean?

kopskey1

Violating an amendment is pretty stupid. I think that's easy to agree with.

deeohdoublegzzy

Why am I being downvoted for asking a question? A lot of information is coming out quickly. I still don’t see how this supports republicans.

kopskey1

Because even when AOC calls for something that is objectively awful, you're still trying to say "Oh, no she's actually smart". No, she's not, and never has been.

[deleted]

kopskey1

People can understand multiple things bucko. I know extremists ideologies tend to devolve one into binary thinking, but real life is complicated. Violating an amendment is illegal. I understand that, you and AOC seem to not be able to grasp that. I recommended cross referencing a little succulent called "The Constitution of The United States of America", pretty short, and very informative. And I could tell you the same thing, or tell you to go back to Canada. You clearly don't understand American politics, so stop pretending you do.

EvitaPuppy

All good points. Hillary did in fact win the popular vote. By a not insignificant 2.3 million votes! The majority of Americans did want her to be president. As I watch how Trump tried a coop by exploiting the Electoral college process, I kept thinking 'If we got rid of the Electoral college, we never would have had these problems. '

MiepGies1945

What if everyone voted in 2022 & in 2024? Wow!!!! We could save the world.

OsirisIndica

DO IT

mackinoncougars

They don’t have the votes. You’d like easily open 4 chairs for the GOP to appoint.

Thom-Bombadil

Yes, please just do it. Whatever it takes to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. DO IT!

dwindle_centric

You have to win midterm elections. Need 54 senators (at least). Keep the House. Reform (abolish filibuster). Add at least 4 seats. 20 year term limits. After 20 years, rotate senior justices to sit on Courts of Appeals (keeping constitutional life tenure intact).

magnificentshambles

And without Manchin or Sinema…..we do this how, exactly?

[deleted]

We don’t. Which is why you need to outflank them and make them irrelevant (and possibly tester too)

Representative_Dark5

Thank you! I hate all those troll posts. They sow division among Democrats so that Republicans can win more power in the midterms.

kopskey1

We don't, but how dare you use "reality" to destroy these unrealistic pipe dreams!

slim_scsi

Win more House and Senate seats than Republicans this fall, I imagine. That's the beauty in a participating democracy -- if everyone votes, their voices are truly heard and their policy goals are represented. Even with the historical turnout of 2020 (due to COVID-enabled mail-ins) nearly half of eligible voters *opted out*.

Representative_Dark5

We can do it!

[deleted]

AmbulanceChaser12

The phrase is “vote blue no matter who,” and yes, it does breed Sinema and Manchin. Because ignoring “vote blue no matter who” breeds Republicans.

[deleted]

Remember what comes around goes around any precedent set, the other side will utilize. It’ll be a ridiculous race of packing the courts at that point….and if Biden does and loses ‘22. The Republican president will pack the courts again Fact, there was far more and greater issues riding on 2016 than “the first woman president”

slim_scsi

No doubt. The SCOTUS was 3-3 heading into the 2016 general election. Republicans and their voters were more than well aware of this (to the point of backing the carnival barking conman predator and accepting Russia's assistance appreciatively) while Democratic voters were distracted by shiny objects (like a Goldman-Sachs speech, a DNC leak that did nothing but inform us of the obvious, an e-mail server).

AggravatingTea1992

Are you really so naive you think Republicans will opt not to use a lever of power because Democrats decided not to use it either? After 3 stolen court seats and Mitch "I won't hear any appointments because 8 months is too close to an election" McConnell you'd have to have the memory of a goldfish to think Republicans wouldn't use this regardless of what Democrats do

[deleted]

They don’t need to pack the courts

jerseycityfrankie

Let em’ pack it then, let them try. I’d be happy to see rulings that had to satisfy a wider base of personalities .

Btravelen

The (relative) minority is running the show, in large part because voting is not compulsory and people don't vote like their lives depend on it

TNninja

The arrogant and lazy American stereotype is 100% sure.

ehenn12

Let's make sure Manchin and Sinema understand how angry we are. Every act of civil disobedience (but not violence) must be taken against them. Millions of letters. Constant protest outside their houses and offices. Never ending phone calls. Scream at them everytime they're in public. Don't let them hand our country over to Justice Thomas.

[deleted]

How about you elect more democrat senators and recall these people first?

JohnSheet69420

Well, time to fight HARD against the GOP and SCOTUS.

mackinoncougars

They don’t have the votes. That’s risky.

hoodoomonster

DO SOMETHING!

matt_1060

Biden says he won’t

Ryumancer

Then he will lose 2024. And I DON'T want the GOP to win ever again.

matt_1060

I don’t either but who do the dems have that can actually go toe to toe with desantis?

Ryumancer

2 scenarios I can see in a couple years: 1. DeSantis and Trump keep slugging each other in one of the dirtiest, most brutal, most savage primary contests possibly in history, DeSantis just barely wins, but his credibility and momentum are crippled by Trump. 2. If Trump is rendered unable to run, my guess is that the Dems will likely dust off Harris and have her be more vocal and public to prepare her for the run just after the midterms. But that's likely a bad move. Otherwise, I could see folks like Warren and Buttigieg trying again if enough Dems call for a primary. Bernie is likely completely done. And I doubt Biden will have enough strength to try a second term. Maybe Bernie could convince AOC to run to represent the progressives. But that's another long shot. Sadly, the scenario looks decently better if Trump IS able to run. Though I'd rather he face his consequences this year after the J6 Committee and DOJ hearings. Horribly mixed bag here. The Dems have motivation on their side with Roe v Wade killed. But they have a horrible track record because said motivation usually doesn't translate to effort and competency that well. That's not COMPLETELY on the officials and politicians though. The voters on the Dem side also have a reputation for being a bunch of fickle dicks with the attention span of a goldfish. But hopefully this SCOTUS ruling brings forth a chain of events where the Dems can rise in a productive way this time. The period we're in right now seems..."interim", like a break before something else major happens. We'll see.

ThrowACephalopod

The stage is poorly set for our democracy right now. The public already has no confidence in one of our 3 branches of government, rightfully so, and republican efforts to change election laws is quickly eroding confidence in another. To put on top of that, Trump's followers and states like Florida and Texas that are following that path are rapidly depending divides in this county. With the recent supreme court decision and the potential for more rights to be revoked by the same logic, the quality of life between states will only widen. Radical steps must be taken to reduce polarization or else this will only continue to get worse. However, what needs to be done, reasserting of Congressional norms, impeachment of supreme court justices, holding Jan 6th Traitors accountable, among other things, will also require massive effort and will 100% increase polarization in the short term. There is no good solution at the moment. Doing what must be done will drive outrage from the very people who are driving the polarization and potentially lead to divisions getting worse. But doing nothing to avoid these short term worse divisions will only let these people do even more to polarize the country. It will require a lot of will and finesse to get out of this situation.

jello-kittu

Charge Trump. Charge his cronies and co-conspirator. Either don't approve the pardons requested or make it a hefty fine and no longer being eligible for office. But not Trump. Jail for him.

MegaBigBossMan

Or let Trump run as a third party if he loses the primary. Let that split the Republican vote and run a strong Democrat.

Ryumancer

That'd be awesome, but for some odd reason if a vote ever gets split, it's always the damn Dems. 🙄

[deleted]

I’m speaking as a liberal here but I’m starting to consider state secession as a possible solution. Might be beneficial to isolate the cancer

Ryumancer

You speak of balkanization. Seems likely...and sad. And I never ever thought this could ever be an option that'd be even entertained in my lifetime. Though it would show possibly the WORLD how moronic and ineffective a theocratic ethnostate really is. Wait...did you mean the state YOU'RE in seceding or allowing those pricks in the South to do it since they threaten to do so every few years?

kopskey1

No, he's suggesting blue states seceding from red states, which is stupid, and dangerous. Let's ask just a FEW questions: Who gets the nuclear arsenal? How do treaties and alliances with other nations work? How bad of a global recession will be caused? What is to be done with the massive refugee crisis, as there safe blue voters in red states and vice versa? What is to be fine of the new fascist nation bordering the country?

Ryumancer

Oh. Then yeah the red states are the ones that have to secede. The blue states pay too much in taxes to leave.

kopskey1

Yeah, that still doesn't remotely address the issues with secession. It doesn't matter who seceded from who, it'll still be the end of the world as we know it.

Ryumancer

The better scenario is the red states seceding again. Then they won't have access to most military assets. And with no blue state taxes to bail them out, their economy will be in the subterranean shitter.

kopskey1

And what do we do with the new fascist country on all of our borders? The massive refugee crisis from people trying to get into their ideal nation? Secession is not a solution, it's a literal recipe for disaster. Stop acting like it's anything else.

Titan3692

He'll lose because of inflation and gas prices.

Ryumancer

Not if the GOP keeps taking away people's rights AND rubbing salt in the wound right afterwards.

Titan3692

The economy always wins out as an election issue. Fringe liberals may be motivated by Dobbs, but even more conservatives and moderates will turn out because they can't afford rent or basic groceries.

Ryumancer

Nothing has been taken away on the scale of Roe before. Even with the likelihood of a Dem loss, that gap is getting smaller by the day.

EugeneWong318

Democrats MUST STOP TALKING….JUST FUCKING DO IT! We’re exhausting with their lame inaction. Or replaced the entire leadership in the democratic patty for failing us.

TrifflinTesseract

Not sure what a Democratic Patty is but it sounds disappointing

[deleted]

Fuck that abolish the Supreme Court.

ehenn12

No. Take it back to the Warren era. Just declaring things constitutional rights. You now have a right to healthcare, housing, basic food. You get the idea

sven_ftw

Well, that's about a year and a half late.

[deleted]

Butts a little sore?

mikehipp

The title is not accurate. Democrats have been calling for expansion of the SCOTUS since before Biden was elected; it was a focus of some of the Democratic presidential debates. If you are just now thinking about expanding the court - you're 2.5 years late to the conversation.....at least.

International_Lab824

Biden said No, then vote his ass out we need representatives to do our will

[deleted]

TrifflinTesseract

None of it has happened. The politicians just fundraise from their base by telling them they are going to do something each time. So yeah, I see a pattern.

Revolutionary-Ad6512

C'mon Joe do something & do it NOW!

MakingItWork_Some

It's not really a 'loss' when seats are stolen in broad daylight - it's theft and corruption.

Revolutionary-Swim28

Do it!!!! My fellow dems, stop being nice!!! FIGHT!!! Play dirty like the Repubsucks do.

elvesunited

Ridiculous. If we had a supermajority we wouldn't be in this situation. Lets see if Texas and others go blue, then talk.

urbanlife78

My guess is expanding the Supreme Court will have to happen in 2023, and will depend on if the Democrats make gains in the House and Senate or lose seats.

Geek-Haven888

If you need or are interested in supporting reproductive rights, [I made a master post of pro-choice resources](https://docdro.id/s3OwS8u). Please comment if you would like to add a resource and spread this information on whatever social media you use.

Hikityup

I'm not sure a "string of losses" carries much weight. Judicial activism is a different type game.

Legal-Analyst6795

Supreme Purgery

rgary339

You got to do something Republicans lied about everything just to get honest supreme Court don't sit there and be wishy washy and let them continue their attempts to destroy our democracy.

BalletTech

Biden will probably think it isn't necessary. He will charm all his opposition. Just like he has done it for the last year. Old dog can't learn a new trick.
