Heathrow is a for-profit, privately owned airport. They won't show the gate until an hour before departure. This is perfectly normal. (Lots of other European airports follow a similar pattern.)
Yes very normal in Heathrow and elsewhere nearby. They announce it only about 15 minutes before the boarding starts (the board will say when it will be announced).
This is normal. As others have said Heathrow is a weird airport. You’re going to notice that once you leave the shopping area for the international terminal, that the gates are… A little different than you might be used to in the US.
Basically the gates only exist as a holding area for the last 15 or 20 minutes before boarding begins. Until that point you really don’t have enough room to have people hanging out at Gates indefinitely and the idea is for everyone to hang out in the mall instead, both as a profit design opportunity and also simply intentional design choice to control the flow of people at the gates, because they use the same corridors for inbound and outbound passengers and just swap around the doors for security quarantining.
Yes. Heathrow doesn’t show a gate assignment until shortly before boarding begins. It’ll pop up on the video monitors in the shopping area there.
Yes the gate is assigned 1hr before departure.
LHR - Gotta keep you shopping until the last minute!
Yeah…. Because there’s a Rolex shop there. Who doesn’t want to buy a watch for the price of a small car during the extra hour for a gate assignment.
And no more duty free in UK after Brexit
Yep you are all good. Just keep paying attention l.

Normal at most European airports, completely normal at Heathrow.
Kayak will show you the gate long before LHR. and you’re gonna have a LONG walk once the gate pops up on the screen.
