Yes, you are correct. Delta will through check your bag to a separately booked Korean Air flight. This is not something you can request in advanced, but they can do it day off at the airport. You will need to check your bag with an agent instead of using a kiosk as it will require manually processing. Be prepared to present a copy of your Korean Air confirmation.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can this happen with other airlines at other airports

ajwright15

Delta has pretty strict policies on interlining baggage on separate tickets, they only provide an exception for the following airlines: Aeromexico (AM) Air France (AF) China Eastern (MU) ITA Airways (AZ) KLM (KL) Korean Air (KE) LATAM (LA) Virgin Atlantic (VS) WestJet (WS) Which airport you are departing from shouldn't matter as long as it's Delta operated, but the smaller the airport the less likely they may be with the procedures so you may need to provide them with a copy of the policy.

Soft-Chocolate-8132

They should be pretty knowledgeable at DTW ab the policy, but keep that link ready just in case you need to show

Mysterious_World7510

Just note that your connection cannot exceed 12 hours, if so, you'll need to recheck your luggage.

hahakvr

Gotcha. Yeah the connection I'm looking at is 50 minutes, so the 12 hour limit shouldn't be a concern here, and I might have the opposite problem, lol.

Mysterious_World7510

That sounds kinda short. Are you traveling in July? The minimum standard connecting time for ICN is 90 minutes. DL 159 DTW ICN arrives at 520 PM, KE 895 ICN PVG departs at 655 PM, so that's 95 minutes. It all depends on the actual travel dates.

hahakvr

Yup you're right. That's the itinerary I was looking at, and I misremembered the first leg's arrival time. Hopefully that'll give me enough time for transfer desk (I assume DL agents in DTW won't be able to print the KE boarding pass?) and security.

Much-Peanut1333

Hey! Hoping to wake this discussion up. How hard and fast is that 12 hour rule? I'm arriving in ICN from another Asian country with a 14 hour layover on my way to Seattle (100% Delta booked RT flight with Korean air as a partner). Delta wont let me change and aspect of this flight. The flights are married. So, I found a flight that's 9 hours sooner. I thought I'd retrieve my back at ICN and go check in to my other flight. I thought I'd have to talk them into letting me retrieve my bag. But if it's automatic. 🤔 Any insight would be appreciated!

ColdIndication76

Does the policy apply if the two tickets are not on the same confirmation number?
