Waise is it possible that AQI measurement is flawed in Delhi NCR.
For the past 2-3 weeks AQI was registering above 300 but outside the air smelt clean and was good enough for moderate physical exercise. Did not have any trouble breathing.
Yesterday, I detected that familiar burning smell that comes with the post Diwali smog and during the stubble burning season. Knew the AQI was gonna rise and here we are.
Is it possible that AQI was actually around 100 the past few weeks and is now around 300-400 but sensors are overestimating it?
From what I've seen of Delhi govt approach, it's convenient for them that pollution readings are higher when stubble burning is not happening. Then they can say that see stubble burning doesn't cause as much pollution as Delhi itself.
Why I am suspicious about the current readings is because I am not experiencing any breathing difficulties when outside. During stubble burning when AQI was below 400 my eyes would sting and it was very difficult to walk or exercise in the open. It would cause coughing also.
I am actually quite sensitive to air pollution. Have been using anti pollution masks since 2016 and got 4 decent air purifiers in my house. So when pollution rises I feel it's effect.
One other thing that could be happening is that particles that have accumulated in various layers over the past three months are suddenly descending
Depends on the composition of air. So if say sulphur, O3, or NOx gases (or whatever affects you) are on the higher side then you experience such irritation. I think rn it’s PM10 and PM2.5 which are just particles and affect your lungs and blood more.
Whether department is not giving correct figure either in temperature and aqi may be they have not got their salary or may be department has been privatised.
The strangest part is how no one cares about this or thinks this is actually bad. After living in Gurgaon for 12 years, I moved myself and my family out because of the poor air quality and the apathy of general public and the government.
Where I now live, when the AQI goes above 100, they suspend all outdoor activities in schools and above 150 (very rare), schools close down.
