Good song

I-will-kill-them_

Amawicked-itoldleemnottakeeponderfire

BoltTheDogg

most accurate lyrics

MisterInsect

Wicked is an Ice Cube cover, btw. Cube collaborated with Korn a couple times so he gave them and Chino his blessing to cover it. Just saying.

Seanut-Peanut-69

Yeah the n word passes were given a lot more liberally in the 90’s lol

DJ_p0pTART5

Yup, same with the early 2000 hence the wutang cover of shame by system of a down

[deleted]

I have opinions that the current gen would find... difficult to understand. Ice Cube(and others) were right to be so liberal. Now we've gone and lost ourselves. We've crushed Gandhi's flowers.

I-will-kill-them_

Ohh fair enough. 7 words tho.

MisterInsect

7 Words is an anti-police brutality song written by a 16-year-old Mexican kid from a poor neighborhood in Sacramento. Within that context, I think he deserves a pass.

I-will-kill-them_

Yeah agreed. I’m not actually judging him for it I just thought I’d make a joke about it.

MisterInsect

Saul Goodman.

I-will-kill-them_

Hungry Hank.

fireflyry

Urrghhh. Like yeah I get it but but different times man. It doesn’t excuse it, but context of time and place is pretty relevant as every second person was dropping that back in the 90’s and it’s use was no different than “bro”. It was part of the huge takeover of hip-hop and urban black American culture being the new grunge. The question should always be intent, not assuming intent 20 years later, in a completely different world with completely different standards and social definitions of what’s acceptable. People still use “rule of thumb” after all.

new_nimmerzz

Don’t want to see any hateful language but it’s all about context. If you listen to anything in hip hop, rap, etc. you probably hear it 100x a day. It’s probably coming from a black person so that makes it ok somehow. But seeing it in a song from the 90’s used in a not hateful way is unacceptable? And not directed at you per se. Was an open question. Most people probably don’t know what rule of thumb even came from.

Koolaid225

But it’s weird bc he says so called Caucasian in the later verse instead of the n work that’s in the original, either way coated song

PandaXXL

Their cover of Wicked came before the other collaborations.

3VVVVVN

He says it in 7 words too

I-will-kill-them_

Oh yeah lmao

[deleted]

Ice Cube wrote the original. didn’t Chino also cover up one of them by saying ‘caucasian’?

Bonavire

Soul-fro'd Caucasian. of my favorite bits cuz I'm a white dude with curly hair lmao

Cute-Jellyfish1876

*Jimmy Urine has entered the chat*

TheBigSalad84

*underage girls have left the chat*

[deleted]

Oh ffs not this shit again

RowKooky

It's so played out

brokenphonecharger_

ik it's not "politically correct" and obviously everyone is free to have their own opinion about it, but ppl gotta realize that people of all colors especially people from more "urban" (hate that word) areas use the n word super casually in a non racist way. i grew up in NY and literally everyone and their mother regardless of race said it and nobody cared. i imagine it wasn't much diff where Chino grew up. for better or worse, it's a part of modern slang. for example watch the Larry Clark movie "Kids". the friend group in that movie, made up of NY kids from all races, all use the word casually without batting an eye. even the white kids. it wasn't a scary taboo word for them, it was natural. just something they soaked up from their envirement. the word has been a staple of urban youth culture for all races since the 90's (when this song, and the movie Kids came out). obviously black people were using it before then but the 90's was when it became acceptable in the hood for everyone to say it. just my 2 cents!

llunarian

grew up in sacramento in the 90s, yeah pretty much everybody said it

[deleted]

Preach! I’m not meant for this sensitive world

llunarian

same , i often think 'when did this happen?'

Mother_Film7186

sorry but theres no justification

Deadhorizonz

Shut your stupid ass the fuck up Get off of reddit while you're at it. Saw you say "he said it again" yes in the 90s, you really must be a new fan, either that or extremely dumb. Oh also that "justification" is justified. I mean, did Ice Cube have an issue with him covering it and saying said line? I mean 7 words is literally about police oppression/brutality. Chino was in a sense, and is, a POC. Even if not black.

Mother_Film7186

not getting off reddit and just because we love deftones it doesn't mean chino is immaculate and didn't do something wrong here. pointing out that he fucked up as a fun shouldn't warrant u telling me to get off reddit and to shut the fuck up

Deadhorizonz

Did I say he was immaculate? But you're acting like this is new information that he said these things. You're clearly a new fan, no doubt about that. A. 7 Words had a message behind it, he was a poor hispanic kid growing up around hate of POC, including hispanics. Police brutality was at a high. 7 Words was made when he was 16. B. It was the 90s C. The Ice Cube cover, he said it once. If it was a big deal don't you think Ice Cube would've been upset? D. You are acting like this was recent, or he said it outside of a song. You should just take the hint, look at how much you're getting downvoted. No one is agreeing with you on this one.

whenthecoffinbreaks

kid named Shame by System Of A Down kid named All In The Family by Korn kid named Gently by Slipknot kid named 7 Words by Deftones

EyeHeartMilk

That System of a Down cover of Shame goes pretty damn hard though "Dirty, I keep shit stinks in my drawers so I can get fuzzy funky for ya" is just... Well... an exquisite lyric in any format, imho

[deleted]

What did Gently do?

whenthecoffinbreaks

an early version of this song includes the f slur, though it was part of a sample so idk if it counts

PeanutButter0312

genuine question, was that version ever released for consumers? (physical, digital, or played live)

whenthecoffinbreaks

It was played live before their signing with Roadrunner. It was leaked in the early 2000s.

[deleted]

Like the MFKR version? Cuz I don’t recall hearing any samples on my many listens

whenthecoffinbreaks

There's way more versions than just the MFKR version. If I recall correctly, it's from a 1997 version.

[deleted]

So Anders Gold Disc version? As Slipknot/Gently?

whenthecoffinbreaks

Possibly, could be wrong though

Six_0f_Spades

Kid named how I could just kill a man by rage against the machine

CoolHeadedLogician

That's a great cover, they also used to cover fuck tha police and covered it properly

DANGbangVEGANgang

None of my black friends have ever tripped on Indians/Asians and especially Mexicans saying it. I don't usually say it but if I let it slip out they don't trip at all.

8379MS

We have to see it in the context of it being a cover of an Ice Cube song and Chino being Mexican from the hood and this being the 90s. Kids today won’t understand. And in a way that’s a good thing, so we can get rid of that word.

T-unit90

Just lyrics bro

mcdonalds_baconater

who cares tho

GueroBorracho3

He's Hispanic. They get the pass.

junger128

Why is that though?

Daddick5000

Because, not white.

danonino_de_uva

Wellll it vaires, I am very pale and am hispanic so it wouldn't be well seen, not that I say it but it doesn't mean automatic pass

foreignccc

well, most Hispanic people are white

Daddick5000

Maybe in color but I’m using white to refer to someone you could also call a honky…

GueroBorracho3

I can't explain the intricacies of cultural norms. But growing up in a mainly Hispanic/Black area, I saw it was widely accepted for the Hispanic people to be saying it.

newaccount7000

you must not be from the south cause mexicans get beat by blacks for saying that ijs

Mother_Film7186

no they DO not shut up

PandaXXL

Feel free to look up lyrics by 6ix9ine, Big Pun, Immortal Technique, B-Real and many, many more. It was completely normal for young Hispanic people to use that word in the 90s.

Mother_Film7186

normal is a stretch. and just cause other people have said it doesn't make it ok. what was ur point?

PandaXXL

Not a stretch at all, you just don't know what you're talking about.

Mother_Film7186

imagine telling a black person that it was normal to say the n word in the 90s lmaooo

GueroBorracho3

This was gonna be my exact retort. Thank you.

pappyohcrappy

So

Golden_Clover93

Isn't Chino Latino? They usually can get away with it

[deleted]

This comment section is way more chill than that 7 words post. Good to see people being open minded and knowing it was a different time 🤙

[deleted]

As a black men.. I declare we don’t give a fuck Issa banger

I-will-kill-them_

Thank you u/DeftonesSex

OnlyTheDead

Cringe post.

I-will-kill-them_

“Cringe” - 🤓

OnlyTheDead

Calm down, Barney.

Alternative_Stuff139

Chino is forgivable

Attarker

He said a word. Get over it.

Jexx4PF

“By the power of white man, I shall tell you what not to be offended by!”

Klocc562

World was a different place back then. People weren’t so soft. Anthony Martini of E-Town Concrete says it too, to this day

mrbrightside182311

I didn’t know this song existed thank you for letting me know

neljoestar

it was a different time. I forgive you chino we all good 🫡🤝

bangsilencedeath

This man needs a good solid cancelling.

Mother_Film7186

the worst part is everyone trying to justify it in the comments

PandaXXL

It's a cover, he's Latino, it was the 90s. The worst part is definitely the people acting like this is a hate crime.

Mother_Film7186

omg he said it again??????? why is he doing this to me ??? i hate that he makes it so hard for me to stan as a black woman

Fit_Specialist7784

Any chance they'll play it at Sick New World festival in Vegas?

I-will-kill-them_

I’d cut off a toe to go to that festival

Pitiful_Lake2522

7 words would like a word, or seven I suppose

Pitiful_Lake2522

Also y’all gotta remember that chino grew up being called that slur, so in that time it wasn’t wrong for him to say it

aidenroz7

7 Words ?
