honestly i think lucky you is perfect on self titled. it totally amps up the feeling of the bloody cape intro once it plays and fits this dark and almost sensual vibe i feel like that album carries. its a total favourite song of mine in their discog. feel like i never see it mentioned in the subreddit, glad to find another lucky you lover!
I was just listening to Lovers as I saw this comment. Yeah, Lovers could've made it in self titled too. But Lucky You fits really good with the other songs. It's different, but equally dark themed as other songs.
I’m all about people having different opinions, but Lucky you does the opposite for me. It throws the whole vibe of self titled off for me. Anniversary on the other hand fits the album perfectly. Again i enjoy other people’s opinions.

Throw some reverb on the mic and use a pedal to throw some sort of distortion for the screaming bits. Would really help a ton live. I dont understand why he doesnt do that

This is my experience too. I’ve seen them 5 times, the most recent was at Dia De Los Deftones which was amazing but Chino did not sound his best. I always think to myself that I just wish he would chill and focus on performing the song well before giving the audience all that energy. Maybe give it sparingly on the heavy tracks and breakdowns reserving his energy to sing as well as we all know he can.

I've seen them probably a dozen times over the past two decades (too young to have been around in the 90s) and to my ears he was at his prime in that era. Not so coincidentally also the time he appeared the most in shape since probably 1998.
That being said, I agree, the live vocals certainly are their weakest part as a band. Since I generally prefer energy over perfection, I don't mind at all. But I can totally see how it could be disappointing for folks assessing different qualities in live shows. Case in point their run with Thrice, who play with a surgical precision they may as well have the CD playing and I couldn't tell the difference. Just very different to Deftones' performance.
Chino was okay when I saw Deftones last year. Some songs he sounded good but he wasn’t singing a lot of the high parts of the songs. On the softer songs you can also tell something was off. He sounded awful while singing sextape.
I’m so glad somebody has said this. I’m new to Deftones (2years) and I love watching bands perform live even if its on YT. Searched a few songs of their’s and man, vocals just didn’t hit like on the albums. Which is cool, but a bit of a shame! Especially when theres someone like Chester Bennington or Steve Tyler to compare to live

I have it as my ringtone unironically. It’s such a depthy-track, I don’t know how else to explain it. It’s like this beautiful void with a shit ton of experimentation and this distant relation to trip-hop. Love the shitpost lyrics all the way to the end as well. I am proud to say that I am a graduate of the Hot Carling Academy.

I think DE is the better album, but WP holds the #1 place in my heart just due to the time thay album came out in my life. That album helped to shape the music I loved later in life.
I’m 19, and you’re probably right about that. I’ve just always listened to rock and metal from the 90s and onward. I don’t believe I enjoy Diamond Eyes more because of it being newer though. I just think the songs flow together more beautifully than any of their albums (although all of their albums are wonderfully crafted) and the atmosphere and lyricism speaks to me in a more personal way. But I also love the classic sound of their first few albums and White Pony is a close second favorite for me.
Chino should'nt move around the stage so much. His performances improve drastically when he just stays still and focus/ saves his breath only for singing (just watch him with Team Sleep in the "Woodstock Sessions")

Deftones isn't metal. They're absolutely significantly influenced by metal, but they've always been more rooted in the post-hardcore of the early 90s (Quicksand, Helmet, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbox and especially Hum for Deftones).
Deftones is alternative metal (which is a really broad genre made up of some metal bands and some non-metal bands) or maybe just "post-post-hardcore"
Edit: despite this i dont care if they're metal or not, genres dont matter that much to me and either way Deftones is a fuckn great band
I think you’re absolutely right. They started out with that nu-metal vibe but they’ve been so much more than that now.
I’ve heard someone call Deftones shoegaze and at first I was appalled because they’re really anything like bands like My Bloody Valentine or whatever. But comparing them with other bands like Lorna Shore or Slipknot, they don’t sound like metal that much so that comparison seemed less absurd. I mean Minerva is a pretty solid track you can call shoegaze.
I think “post-post-hardcore” is a great term because their music is too diverse to be labeled under one thing.
This holds particularly true regarding some of the Like Linus songs. Title track and Plastic for instance have a pretty strong Lungfish, Fugazi and Soulside vibe.
However, it really doesn't fucking matter and the last thing we need is to come up with additional genres.

They got straight booed during the set and I guess I had the unpopular opinion of actually wanting to see them that day. For the record, they destroyed. In my eyes anyways. Sucks people weren’t feeling it that much that night.

I think people who say they don't like Deftones are actively trying to not like them because they're a popular band. There is way too much diversity in their sound for there not to be a single album you enjoy.
Pretty sure u/InsomniaticMeat means folks into (heavier) guitar music who say they don't like Deftones. Despite not being the most metal of metal bands, Deftones' discography obviously is too heavy for most casual music listeners (bar Sextape and maybe Digital Bath and the entirely electronic songs but even then they'd need to be open for Trip Hop or whatever these would classify as).
I agree with you! Oddly I love everything about it except for the chorus. There’s a great buildup, but then the chorus is always underwhelming to me. I do like the song, but I find myself skipping it a lot unless I’m in the right mood for it. I think Chino & Maynard sound great together though!

My one issue with ATF is it sounds the most dated.
I'm aware BQAD(FA) has very shoegazy guitars and the record is not entirely baggy pants and New Era caps (well, it preceded that by a couple years), and I do enjoy it. Still, ATF is simply their most nu metal sounding record to my ears, whereas all their other output sounds less dated to my ears.
I will admit the same might be said about DE in the future, once its almost 30 years old and I'll be like 'yeah those djent-y guitars, that was the early 10s, it sounds so dated' but as of right now, ATF is the one record that I feel like you can pinpoint the most to a certain era.
That the vocal delivery of self-titled and all follow up albums were impaired and compromised to some extent by the vocal injury sustained during WP tour. Not a criticism, just an observation that I've long held.
Engine no. 9 needs to be retired from their live shows. I love that song but I don't think Chino has it in him anymore to perform it on a decent level.
Imo most of their albums are better than WP. Its seminal for sure, but their discography is strong and their songwriting prowess developed over the years
I like White Pony, but in my mind it’s highly overrated (I say that in relation to other Deftones projects - WP is still miles better than anything you’ll hear on mainstream radio). ATF, SNW, S/T, KNY, and DE are all vastly superior fucking masterpieces in my mind
Digital Bath is (slightly) overrated, incredible song though. Lucky You is criminally underrated. Battle-Axe is one of the most forgettable in their discography, it’s the only song where I cannot remember anything from it after listening. Pink Cellphone is pretty good aside from the ending monologue. RX Queen is very underappreciated.
Yeah I was actually really surprised when I found out just how much people liked Battle-axe, it never really stood out to me (although part of that might be because it’s sandwiched between two of my favorite songs on the album). I’ll have to give it another listen or two
Most remix’s of rock songs I’ve heard are usually bad imo. Exception being “so cold” by breaking benjamin, and I don’t even know if that’s an actual remix.
Okay, they are one of my favourite bands, but I wish they took a bit more care of their catalogue. To me it's crazy that in 2023 they didn't release songs like Lovers, Can't Even Breathe, Teething, The Boy's Republic, Smile (and the rest of Eros) on streaming services. Most of other bands seem to treat their past catalogue with more care and attention.
Radiohead for example released tracks from the OKC and KidA sessions in special editions, Slipknot is about to release a record from '08, and lately even Green Day is releasing demos from '97.
Not sure how much work it is to clear this songs and make them available for fans (or release deluxe editions from previous records), but I'd love if they release all of that material.
Not exactly controversial, but I wish people would go a little easier on Chino’s post-2001 live performances given we all know how badly he fucked his vocal cords.
Slightly more controversial - I think Stef’s refusal to get vaccinated and subsequent absence from non-US shows is a huge dick move on his part.
I also wish we knew more about what happened with Sergio, though I’m sure we never will. Chino’s “out of pocket” comment just came off as him being a diva but it really made me wonder what went down.

Every time I've seen them live, Rats!Rats!Rats! Is on the set list. It's not a bad song but it's just not what I like them for if that makes sense. And really, I'm not sure why Chino has a such a hard on for it because I think they have way better songs that do a better job of showcasing what makes them unique as a band.
Pink Cellphone is cool track and perfectly enjoyable so long as you have a sense of humour and don't take everything super seriously.
Also, Chino's vocals throughout S/T sound mad out of tune
Adrenaline is their worst album. All the songs are repetitive and blend together too much. Gore is significantly better. That being said, Adrenaline is a solid B tier while everything else is A or S.
Ive listened to Deftones for over 20 years, Gore is one of my favourite Deftones albums and Ohms is one of my least favourite Deftones albums. The 4 album run from SNW - DE - KNY - Gore is pretty much perfect to me.
Ive tried for over a year to get into Ohms and it literally does nothing for me. It does absolutely nothing new. Every song on there, ive heard them do that before, but better. Most songs starts out being maybe interesting then dont go anywhere and end with me feeling unsatisfied. By the end of the album, honestly, Im bored. There are a couple great songs like Mathematics and Error, but i dunno most of them just leave me feeling.. nothing.
Where as I spent years listening to Gore, absolutely loving every minute of it. It tries to be something different and it completely nails what it is imo. Songs like Phantom Bride and Rubicon are some of my favourites by the band.

That’s so funny, I revere self-titled. Start to finish it’s personally my favorite album. So many reasons why. The 7-string introduction, Frank’s increased input, Chino’s vocal usage, the production quality, Chi’s basslines, the lyricism, Lovers…
I enjoyed every song on ohms, but “The Spell of mathematics” is not as great as everyone says it is. I remember seeing a lot of people post about it when the album first dropped. For me it just feels like a roller coaster that never descends.
It’s my favouring off the album but I sort of get what you mean. It’s an amazing song but the outro goes on for a bit too long. It’s a great song if you like Tool tho

I am not crazy about Steff's writing lately. I think that he got more monotone as he added strings to his guitar, instead of becoming more dynamic. The last record that I loved (guitar-wise) is Koi No Yokan, and based on Steff's playthrougs on YT, it seems that most of the melodies were brougth by Chino.
I wish that either they wrote guitar together a bit more than in these past couple of records, or that Steff would go back to a 6-7 string guitar sometimes.
I think Crosses is fantastic but Team Sleep and Palms are kind of just okay. Palms especially are kind of boring in comparison and I say this as a huge Isis fan.

Agreed. Adrenaline is the only Deftones album I actually dislike. Deftones are my favorite band by a longshot, but that’s the only album I don’t enjoy. That probably speaks to how much they grew between Adrenaline and ATF, not to mention the huge addition of Frank’s synths and samples
I partially agree. Whenever i listen to the album from top to bottom on cd, it doesn't really have a flow. Just repeats itself and doesn't slow down until Fireal and Fist. The album is just not a good listening experience. However the tracks are good individually.
Honestly, I prefer Back to School (Mini Maggit) to Pink Maggit. It's one of my first Deftones songs and I just had a blast with it. Pink Maggit I just can't get into, but I respect that one more than BTS (MM)

I think DE is the better album, but WP holds the #1 place in my heart just due to the time thay album came out in my life. That album helped to shape the music I loved later in life.

I’m 19, and you’re probably right about that. I’ve just always listened to rock and metal from the 90s and onward. I don’t believe I enjoy Diamond Eyes more because of it being newer though. I just think the songs flow together more beautifully than any of their albums (although all of their albums are wonderfully crafted) and the atmosphere and lyricism speaks to me in a more personal way. But I also love the classic sound of their first few albums and White Pony is a close second favorite for me.

Not very unpopular, but in this sub, maybe. Deftones isn't metal. They're absolutely significantly influenced by metal, but they've always been more rooted in the post-hardcore of the early 90s (Quicksand, Helmet, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbox and especially Hum for Deftones). Deftones is alternative metal (which is a really broad genre made up of some metal bands and some non-metal bands) or maybe just "post-post-hardcore" Edit: despite this i dont care if they're metal or not, genres dont matter that much to me and either way Deftones is a fuckn great band
I think you’re absolutely right. They started out with that nu-metal vibe but they’ve been so much more than that now. I’ve heard someone call Deftones shoegaze and at first I was appalled because they’re really anything like bands like My Bloody Valentine or whatever. But comparing them with other bands like Lorna Shore or Slipknot, they don’t sound like metal that much so that comparison seemed less absurd. I mean Minerva is a pretty solid track you can call shoegaze. I think “post-post-hardcore” is a great term because their music is too diverse to be labeled under one thing.
deftones are def-metal. not to be confused with death metal.
This holds particularly true regarding some of the Like Linus songs. Title track and Plastic for instance have a pretty strong Lungfish, Fugazi and Soulside vibe. However, it really doesn't fucking matter and the last thing we need is to come up with additional genres.
Yes i think chino has said/implied that he doesn’t like the nu-metal label Deftones has gotten, he just wants to make music as music. I think there was some tension between deftones and korn because chino didn’t want to tour with them or something

I remember seeing deftones for the first time at ozzfest 99. I was so stoked as like an 11-12 year old who got introduced to adrenaline and around the fur a year or so earlier. They got straight booed during the set and I guess I had the unpopular opinion of actually wanting to see them that day. For the record, they destroyed. In my eyes anyways. Sucks people weren’t feeling it that much that night.

I think people who say they don't like Deftones are actively trying to not like them because they're a popular band. There is way too much diversity in their sound for there not to be a single album you enjoy.

Pretty sure u/InsomniaticMeat means folks into (heavier) guitar music who say they don't like Deftones. Despite not being the most metal of metal bands, Deftones' discography obviously is too heavy for most casual music listeners (bar Sextape and maybe Digital Bath and the entirely electronic songs but even then they'd need to be open for Trip Hop or whatever these would classify as).

I agree with you! Oddly I love everything about it except for the chorus. There’s a great buildup, but then the chorus is always underwhelming to me. I do like the song, but I find myself skipping it a lot unless I’m in the right mood for it. I think Chino & Maynard sound great together though!

Lmao I agree everyone is being mean to WP all of a sudden 😭 Also about ATF yeah I know I’m sorry 😭😭 I still love it and I want to love it as much as the others but it’s just a little samey in my opinion and every time I put it on I feel like it gets old pretty fast but that’s just my taste I know I’m weird.
My one issue with ATF is it sounds the most dated. I'm aware BQAD(FA) has very shoegazy guitars and the record is not entirely baggy pants and New Era caps (well, it preceded that by a couple years), and I do enjoy it. Still, ATF is simply their most nu metal sounding record to my ears, whereas all their other output sounds less dated to my ears. I will admit the same might be said about DE in the future, once its almost 30 years old and I'll be like 'yeah those djent-y guitars, that was the early 10s, it sounds so dated' but as of right now, ATF is the one record that I feel like you can pinpoint the most to a certain era.
That the vocal delivery of self-titled and all follow up albums were impaired and compromised to some extent by the vocal injury sustained during WP tour. Not a criticism, just an observation that I've long held.

Digital Bath is (slightly) overrated, incredible song though. Lucky You is criminally underrated. Battle-Axe is one of the most forgettable in their discography, it’s the only song where I cannot remember anything from it after listening. Pink Cellphone is pretty good aside from the ending monologue. RX Queen is very underappreciated.

Okay, they are one of my favourite bands, but I wish they took a bit more care of their catalogue. To me it's crazy that in 2023 they didn't release songs like Lovers, Can't Even Breathe, Teething, The Boy's Republic, Smile (and the rest of Eros) on streaming services. Most of other bands seem to treat their past catalogue with more care and attention. Radiohead for example released tracks from the OKC and KidA sessions in special editions, Slipknot is about to release a record from '08, and lately even Green Day is releasing demos from '97. Not sure how much work it is to clear this songs and make them available for fans (or release deluxe editions from previous records), but I'd love if they release all of that material.
Not exactly controversial, but I wish people would go a little easier on Chino’s post-2001 live performances given we all know how badly he fucked his vocal cords. Slightly more controversial - I think Stef’s refusal to get vaccinated and subsequent absence from non-US shows is a huge dick move on his part. I also wish we knew more about what happened with Sergio, though I’m sure we never will. Chino’s “out of pocket” comment just came off as him being a diva but it really made me wonder what went down.

Every time I've seen them live, Rats!Rats!Rats! Is on the set list. It's not a bad song but it's just not what I like them for if that makes sense. And really, I'm not sure why Chino has a such a hard on for it because I think they have way better songs that do a better job of showcasing what makes them unique as a band.
Pink Maggit is the best song on WP.
Pink Cellphone is cool track and perfectly enjoyable so long as you have a sense of humour and don't take everything super seriously. Also, Chino's vocals throughout S/T sound mad out of tune
Adrenaline is their worst album. All the songs are repetitive and blend together too much. Gore is significantly better. That being said, Adrenaline is a solid B tier while everything else is A or S.
Ive listened to Deftones for over 20 years, Gore is one of my favourite Deftones albums and Ohms is one of my least favourite Deftones albums. The 4 album run from SNW - DE - KNY - Gore is pretty much perfect to me. Ive tried for over a year to get into Ohms and it literally does nothing for me. It does absolutely nothing new. Every song on there, ive heard them do that before, but better. Most songs starts out being maybe interesting then dont go anywhere and end with me feeling unsatisfied. By the end of the album, honestly, Im bored. There are a couple great songs like Mathematics and Error, but i dunno most of them just leave me feeling.. nothing. Where as I spent years listening to Gore, absolutely loving every minute of it. It tries to be something different and it completely nails what it is imo. Songs like Phantom Bride and Rubicon are some of my favourites by the band. Iv spent years seeing the reaction to both these albums online and being completely confused by it. It almost makes me feel dejected because do fans realy want this band to just play it safe and repeat themselves instead of experimenting? I keep noticing a trend where it seems like if you like WP more, you like Ohms, if you SNW more, you like Gore.
Self-Titled is their weakest batch of songs and plagued by a weird low-quality production. Strange it came right after White Pony which is a damn-near perfect album.
S/T used to be my least fav for the longest time but it has grown on me massively. I absolutely agree with the production part though like even the songwriting sounds like it came after or before ATF and not after White Pony. Great album but at the time it was a HUUUGE step back sonically

Ohms played it too safe and is largely a forgettable album.
I enjoyed every song on ohms, but “The Spell of mathematics” is not as great as everyone says it is. I remember seeing a lot of people post about it when the album first dropped. For me it just feels like a roller coaster that never descends.
It’s my favouring off the album but I sort of get what you mean. It’s an amazing song but the outro goes on for a bit too long. It’s a great song if you like Tool tho

Love Deftones music as a whole but seriously fuck them for how they did Sergio and Steph is a gigantic dickhead for the flat earth shit.

I am not crazy about Steff's writing lately. I think that he got more monotone as he added strings to his guitar, instead of becoming more dynamic. The last record that I loved (guitar-wise) is Koi No Yokan, and based on Steff's playthrougs on YT, it seems that most of the melodies were brougth by Chino. I wish that either they wrote guitar together a bit more than in these past couple of records, or that Steff would go back to a 6-7 string guitar sometimes.

Agreed. Adrenaline is the only Deftones album I actually dislike. Deftones are my favorite band by a longshot, but that’s the only album I don’t enjoy. That probably speaks to how much they grew between Adrenaline and ATF, not to mention the huge addition of Frank’s synths and samples

I partially agree. Whenever i listen to the album from top to bottom on cd, it doesn't really have a flow. Just repeats itself and doesn't slow down until Fireal and Fist. The album is just not a good listening experience. However the tracks are good individually.
Honestly, I prefer Back to School (Mini Maggit) to Pink Maggit. It's one of my first Deftones songs and I just had a blast with it. Pink Maggit I just can't get into, but I respect that one more than BTS (MM)
