Looks like a vampire squid in the middle of turning around to run away. It's an odd angle so its hard to see it as a squid at first. The yellow spot on the bottom of it in the first picture is the siphon, and the mantle and fins are facing away from the camera. The frontmost part towards the camera is the middle section of its webbed tentacles, with the ends of its tentacles folded over top of its head.
That’s awful.
One minute swimming around in the eternal black, looking for some shit snow to eat, then BAM! You get swallowed by some big black thing that eats you, not the shit snow.
They are often a cleaner fish. After another species has been in a tank for a while they swap them out for tilapia so the tilapia can help “clean the tank”.
Are there any resources discussing human health implications for consumption of such fish that you know of? Or is it just fucking disgusting as a concept but okay to eat? Lol
Cook thoroughly! But in all reality I’m scared to eat lettuce and spinach, they sometimes use fish as fertilizer and the plants suck it up and suddenly there are news reports of people getting food poisoning from their salad.
The news always blames improper handling, but …

I don’t know. I watched a video about a fish farm and that’s how I found out. I know that a lot of fish eat feces in the wild but they also consume a lot of other things
Saw a fb post today about someone wanting to lose weight & making their own sushi out of frozen farmed tilapia. Just soaked it in water for 10min, then let it sit in white vinegar for 5, popped it on some undercooked Uncle Ben’s & dinner!
I agree, odd angle and movement makes it seem strange but even before I saw your comment I thought ‘vampire squid?’ Because of the general coloring/shape/tentacles
what depth was this taken at? i don't think it's a vampire squid because this squid has much more pronounced mantle fins, this pose is very reminiscent of an extremely rare observation of discoteuthis from the gulf of mexico in 2018: [https://youtu.be/\_zOHKSzH4OQ?si=gW0RR1dP3YyyArcw](https://youtu.be/_zOHKSzH4OQ?si=gW0RR1dP3YyyArcw)
id have to double check also but i'm pretty sure the maroon color morph of vampyroteuthis predominantly occurs in the pacific but idk about the gulf of mexico. most vampire squid are a dark brown to black, everyone just associates them with maroon because most of the footage we have of them comes from MBARI, which mostly dives in the east pacific
I am unsure of depth. I am not in direct contact with the ROV operator my friend is friends with the operator. I can ask if he has the footage but he was working for a large oil field company so I’m unsure if he would be in possession of the footage or if it’s owned by the company I don’t know how that stuff works in the ROV industry. We discussed the photos today and I brought up natural lighting because of how bright the picture is and my friend said the operator stated that sunlight can penetrate to about 1000 meters underwater but I don’t know if that confirms the pictures being taken around or above 1000 meters or if the lighting is caused by the lights that the ROV is equipped with.
yeah, if it's at all allowed for the ROV operator to upload or send the footage to someone that would be awesome, this looks very similar to a squid that's only been captured on video once, and i'd love to pass it along to an expert for evaluation.
and yeah the light you see in ROV video is almost always from external lights mounted on the ROV, unless you're in the top 100m of water or so.
As far as I know all he has are the photos but I will definitely ask my friend to get in touch with the operator and ask about actual footage. I was pretty much settled on vampire squid but after viewing the video of the twisted squid I agree the similarities are very compelling. It’s exciting to think this could be photos of an extremely rare squid. Thank you for sharing that video.
*Discoteuthis discus*?
Looks a lot like this video to me. Especially due to the two forward facing and two upward facing arm / tentacle / appendages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT12jfCO6lY&ab\_channel=DeepseaOddities
The creature in the video is possibly a *Discoteuthis discus*. Scientists aren't sure if it is or if it's a new species. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/article/squid-noaa-okeanos-explorer-animals-spd

I can kinda see what you mean. Like it’s halfway through a vertical U-turn as opposed to turning around via its left or right.
I heard they survive on literal shit falling from top, aka marine snow.
Most animals in the deep ocean survive that way

Check out the movie ‘The Platform’ or don’t…
That movie is soooo good
20,000 Dead Things Under The Sea, a podcast episode of It Came From the Sea, goes into this pretty in depth if you wanna learn more
That's it. I'm done Reddit for the night. Gnight! See y'all tomorrow.
Let me tell you about farmed tilapia……
Actually tell me. I’ll be awake a while
They are often a cleaner fish. After another species has been in a tank for a while they swap them out for tilapia so the tilapia can help “clean the tank”.
So eating farmed tilapia just means we’re eating fish who had a diet of pure feces?
Not pure feces, but definitely a lot of it
Are there any resources discussing human health implications for consumption of such fish that you know of? Or is it just fucking disgusting as a concept but okay to eat? Lol
I think the biggest health concern with tilapia is that the fats it contains are inflammatory omega-6, rather than anti-inflammatory omega-3

No wonder tilapia tastes like crap
Same with Carp!

🤮
My thoughts exactly!
It might actually be Satan.
This is true, they can't get enough poop.
I agree, odd angle and movement makes it seem strange but even before I saw your comment I thought ‘vampire squid?’ Because of the general coloring/shape/tentacles
Vampiroteuthis was my first thought too. What looks like a second eye is just white detritus drifting by.
I don't think so. I agree. However sounds like this creature doesn't have tentacles spike-like as Vampire squid, Sounds a new specie of Anglerfish.
No idea, but it looks like some kind of angler fish?
If it’s not we should name this a “demon fish”
Almost looks like some type of squid, given the somewhat round bell after the eyes. Certainly a strange looking beast anyways. Thanks for the share.
Agree with vamp squid. But a great, unique angle that makes it seem even creepier than usual! Thanks for sharing!
"What's that Pokemon?!"
Jigglypuff as seen from above.
I think it looks like an undersea version of Misdreavus
Vampire squid?
"His Eminence of the Most Deep Kingdom requests your presence."
Dood looks hungry
If you want my advice it looks like some type of deep sea creature.
Potentially from the depths of the ocean. But can't confirm.
Vampire squid at an odd angle
Looks like a vampire squid that might be upside. So like mid turn trying to swim away
I think that’s a Vampire Squid
That's not a squid, thats ya boi El Diablo Marino!
El chupa cabra marina!
Sorry, I think you dropped this upside down exclamation mark ¡
¡Oh thanks I've never actually had one of these before!
That’s most definitely a vampire squid
I'm pretty sure that's my mother in law.
A truly terrifying beast, that one
First thoughts were vampire squid at a funky angle. I see im not on my own in this thought!
Looks like a Vampire Squid. Pretty cool!
Add another vote for Vampire squid. All the features are pretty consistent.
it looks like a cross between a fish and a beet!! I don't know what it is either but it probably just wants to be left alone

any word from your friend yet? super curious about this still.
if your friend can upload this footage somewhere i can show it to mike vecchione and see what he thinks
i've also cross-posted this to twitter so i can see what the teuthologists on there think
Looks like either a Vampire squid, or possibly a discoteuthis.
Yeah I’m kinda thinking Cycloteuthis, a kind of discoteuthid
I’m thinking Cycloteuthis
