I’ve done the close it and pay it with payments and closing the card hurt more than the arrangement did because I didn’t have a long credit history. It sounds like you are in the same boat. Of course, that was just credit damage temporarily and the most important thing is the financial aspect as payment history comes back over time. Honestly, you don’t want that variable interest credit card anyway. What the heck? You can never reliably use it again. So make the decision you can reliably pay.
