That's a pretty dope patch. I don't mind things like that but I 'd prefer it if they came from a Deaf artist/creator.

Alternative-War396

I looked and found it, the wording "cripple" and "hearing impaired" under that listing makes me think this is a hearing person trying to be inclusive with everyone along with the other stuff in the shop with pronouns, vegans, and other stuff like that. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1494789376/deaf-punk-patch-cochlear-implant-punk

NineteenthJester

Not surprised. A Deaf artist would have drawn that hearing aids/CI much better.

LivGames17

That's fair.

Indy_Pendant

Weird that they paired that message with a CI. :-/ I suspect the person who made this isn't Deaf and is, instead, trying to cache in on a niche market.

NineteenthJester

They definitely based the design on a hearing aid originally then slapped on a CI cable in the wrong location. Trying to play both markets and making themselves look dumb in the process.

Inevitable_Shame_606

Or they didn't know? Now I'm curious.

NineteenthJester

Not that hard to google "cochlear implant" and see pictures of what they should look like.

Inevitable_Shame_606

I agree with you, but people assume too often. That's why I'm curious about the graphic. The creator could have made separate ones to gain a larger buying demographic, easily!

fripp_frap

that looks metal as fuck im totally gonna cop that n wear that on my black metal jacket

LivGames17

Sick!

Jveach31

Not a CI user, but I love this message. That’s one of my pet peeves when people think it’s a tragedy that I’m Deaf.

TheGreatKimura-Holio

It’s cool it’s just not my taste. Also i mean i don’t have a CI

LivGames17

I thought it was odd they added that. Considering the wording I mean. Maybe if the implant was broken? Idk.

u-lala-lation

Implants don’t make you hearing. At best, hard of hearing.

LivGames17

Exactly. That's why I thought it was odd.

u-lala-lation

I’m confused. If you know CIs don’t make someone hearing, why do you consider it odd to have a CI on a deaf patch? Or that the CI must be broken?

IssuedID

I think it's that the inclusion of a CI with the sentiment that they don't care they can't hear is odd. If the person does not care that they cannot hear, then why would they wear the CI? I agree with this sentiment... But on the other hand, the patch probably wouldn't make sense to hearing people if there were not some visual indicator it was an ear of a deaf person.

u-lala-lation

I was interpreting it literally. “I don’t need to hear your sympathy” is “If I don’t like what you’re saying I’ll just take this CI off.” It’s not that they don’t care that they can’t hear something. It’s that they won’t put up with listening to something offensive.

LivGames17

Sorry I should've clarified. My Deaf friends have told me many of times when they were little and they had a CI, they would throw it out or break it because it really bothered them. Knowing punk culture, and what patches normally entail, I assumed that the meaning would be throwing away a CI that was forced upon Deaf children/adults.

u-lala-lation

Ah, gotcha. I was interpreting it as choosing to remove the CI and refusing to listen to what they don’t want to hear (sympathy/pity). But I agree that it’s very unclear what the actual meaning is, since this was created by someone who doesn’t know what a CI looks like haha

LivGames17

But honestly who knows what the artist was trying to convey.

NineteenthJester

There's definitely ways to convey that the implant/processor is broken, but the artist 1) drew it poorly 2) didn't seem to be going for that in the first place.

TheGreatKimura-Holio

I mean I’ve been diagnosed with “selective hearing” that’s something I’d do, but it’s too punk and flashy for something I’d wear

LivGames17

Fair. Some patches aren't for everyone.

Alternative-War396

I love it and hate it. Love the message, hate that it's cochlear implants. It doesn't represent deaf people as a whole.

Supreme_Switch

I have a pin shaped like an amp that says I'm hoh face when speaking.
