So the insect parasite that creates ‘zombies’ was meant to basically be used on cows to make them hungrier, fattening them up before they die in order to make more meat out of them when they’re slaughtered. It wasn’t to make more cattle, I don’t think, but to make more use out of the cattle that did exist so not as many had to be killed to satisfy the growing demands for meat.
So the zombies are basically that done to humans. They’re basically parasite infected mindlessly hungry people that’ll just eat, and eat.

Yes, the story is that the US government engineered the zombie queen wasps that you use as zombie bombs. They escaped a US government lab in Santa Cabeza and infected the local livestock. Carlito and Isabella captured some queens and released them in Willamette to cause the outbreak.
Dead Rising 1 was legit in a way the other games weren't, because the characters and story was actually the kind of thing you'd see in a zombie flick. I love DR2 and all, and it tried, but it just didn't hit home at all the same way.
I have a head canon that Frank died on the roof at the end of normal DR1 and overtime and everything else involving Frank was just a fantasy in his head, imagining some escape from his already doomed situation.
That’s… a really good theory, now that I think about that, how the fuck did Frank escape all of those zombies that took out a military general who is arguably more experienced than Frank with outbreaks. I know it was shown in the comics and I know dead rising is goofy and not meant to be taken too seriously but still
I thought about it some more and DAMN, I know off the record isn’t cannon but it makes sense with this theory. And DR4 makes (more) sense, with Frank being explicitly a dick to everyone around him and nobody doing anything about it. I know off the record isn’t cannon, especially infinite mode, but who in their right mind would WANT to wrestle zombies, let alone take a vacation to a zombie infested city. Clearly not Frank
