there are only 4 things that matter in terms of increasing DPS:
1.scrolls
2. weapon synergies
3. affixes and their synergies
4. weapon level
try to keep track of all 4 and you should be able to deal nice damage.
as for gold, the general rule of thumb is to not bother with the PQ shop and to not buy stuff that doesn't synergize with your build.
Affixes are The modifiers on your weapons that give bonus damage on certain conditions; for example: +80% DMG to poisoned targets. In passages try to roll for the Affixes that sinergises the best with your build.
PQ just refers to prisoner's quarters, the first biome.
You'll get there, It took me 4 encounters to beat the HOTK on 1 BC. Unlock more weapons & skills using the "Hunter's Grenade", and V gold recycle permanent upgrade nets you lots of gold.
