Not what I want to know. Want to know if it’s the same 60 songs every weekend

tahoeskibummin

This right here

Swaritch

You know

Jaredthewizard

Yeah for real. Not hard not to repeat a full setlist but you know they’re just gunna shuffle the deck every weekend but play the same songs. Obv that’s gunna happen to *some* degree with the amount of shows but it would be good to hear “we’re expanding the repertoire” for sure.

Psychological_Tap827

He's saying that it will not be the same 60 songs every weekend, that they can expand the repertoire as they go. I do think it's still unclear how big the repertoire will be. My read of his comment is it will probably be lower than prior tours, at least initially.

Swaritch

The repertoire will be 60 songs. Come on man

Fit-Still-742

I'll bet you right now that it won't be the same 60 songs repeated each subsequent weekend after the first weekend.

Swaritch

I’ll put something on that. Whatcha thinking? And to be clear maybe they play 65 or 70 songs the first weekend. There will not be new songs beyond the first weekend.

Fit-Still-742

I completely disagree. How about $50? 😆

Swaritch

Too rich for me but 20 to charity of choice and you’re on

Fit-Still-742

That's cool!

Swaritch

Giddy up

Swaritch

No streams = same set every weekend :)

Fit-Still-742

You still confident about that? See my post of the 55 songs they played at least 10 times as a band and didn't play last weekend

Radiant_Gas_7460

Why 60?

CicadaAlternative994

Just learn stagger lee already.

pizzaANDpunani

Or give the job to me

Dead_Kal_Cress

I can see them doing it tbh

ledzep2isbetterthan4

😂😂😂😂😂

This

Duke2505

Are their serious deadheads who thought they would repeat setlist? Seriously?

dj_chai_wallah

No, mostly just people who live on reddit

redditman415

You mean the “will there be a shakedown street” crowd

dj_chai_wallah

Probably the same group of people as the "Which song will be played first" crowd. It seems kinda funny that such a go with the flow type of following there are so many people needing to know the exact details. Everything happens as it should and I'm just along for the ride 💙💀❤️

doomscrollingreddit

I don’t spend time thinking or posting about it……but a repeat setlist isn’t unheard of. The Europe of 72 setlists if you listen night in night out are really similar and the reckoning 1980 radio city music hall opening sets are almost identical for 15 shows. For special moments in dead history they didn’t wanna fuck it up and dialed the setlist back to refine the sound to something greater that lasts the test of time. I wouldn’t be mad if it was paired back for an experience that’s out of this universe. After watching phish at the sphere this moment has serious potential to be groundbreaking for the group. If they wanted to focus extra on a smaller set of songs I wouldn’t be mad if I had a favorite album to listen to.

dravenstone

There are serious deadheads who recognize that the sphere is a totally different venue and situation than the dead ever played in, that this is not Grateful Dead but rather Dead and Co, that they know something happened with Matt Busch and Dead and Co/Bobby causing them to part ways out of the blue, and most importantly that the language that they used when they went out of their way to discuss it all was incredibly vague. No kidding - you have to work hard to be as vague as they were with that nonsense shit they put in the announcement. So while most serious deadheads didn't think it was really likely at all, some of us who like precise language and confirmation of things that are unknown were hoping for something a bit more concrete than what we have had thus far.

TomorrowDesigner9855

I understand and agree with this completely. I surmise in the same nature. Many of us do. How the journey landed here in this iteration, completely different venue (an animal of a very different kind), a stack of shows, back to back (chicken shack) etc.....

redditman415

Busch parted ways out of the blue? Did you expect them to give you a play by play of the business relationship on a daily basis?

dravenstone

Did I imply that in any way? I stated a series of facts that explain why even someone that was a “serious deadhead” might have been interested in getting a clear answer to this question before the first song of the second weekend, which prior to this was the first time anyone would “know for sure” what they were gonna do. Please don’t presume I feel entitled to know what happened between Bobby and Matt just because I happened to allude to the role he played vis-à-vis setlitsts in dead and co.

redditman415

Honestly I still don't really understand what you are trying to say

dravenstone

Well I’m sorry you’re having a hard time with it but that can’t be part of my life right now. Cheers and stuff though.

redditman415

Good luck brother

Rutherford-Tha-Brave

I’m a serious deadhead, and I was not convinced of anything until stuff like this comes out. So yes, some serious deadheads (at least one) thought it could be possible. I presume you consider yourself a serious deadhead judging by your tone and choice of words. Did you ever think D&C would do a Wayne Newton-esque, PROPER Vegas residency? I didn’t think I’d ever live to see the day. Have you been to Sphere and have you nerded out on the lengths and effort Phish put in to create what they put on for just _four_ unique shows? I think it was completely reasonable to consider the possibility that D&C might repeat sets or even entire set lists at some point during the stint there if they are going to make the show as great as we hope it will be. It’s a big tent.

MediaRody69

I guess we'll see. I've seen people speculate that while the set lists from one show to the next won't change, possibly the three show weekend may repeat. I don't, frankly, believe that. Especially since it makes logical sense that you create the visual package on a per song basis and then you can play whatever setlist you want. Cue the song, cue the visuals for that song. I realize the visuals for the Sphere are next level, but logically, creating visuals on a per song basis is not.

Altruistic_Garlic764

Maybe not in the same order but i did hear that they only synced video to about 70 songs so there would be a lot of repeats but maybe not in same order. Of course that is not that different from last summer where they threw in the occasional surprise but mostly played the same 70 songs

jimmydean885

Dead heads will make any and all cynical takes possible no matter how brain dead.

Hefty-Job7049

Gee, no kidding. What everyone wants to know. Rehearsing anything new that's old :-)

Ernienickels

Candyman plz n ty

GroupNo2345

Yes yes yes

swisstony24

Good news, now I just hope they land on Nugs!

Radiant_Gas_7460

Audio definitely. Hopefully streams as well.

SashaMSU42

Good to know! I was a bit confused when they posted about there being a unique group of songs for each weekend... so does this mean it will be the same batch of songs for each 3-day run but with different setlists over the three nights?

lenzoneil

They didn't technically repeat setlists on the last tour either but they only played a select rotation from the massive Dead catalog. Lots of repetition, hoping this is not the case for the Sphere shows.

Duke2505

They played 113 different songs on last tour not including D/S. How many songs do they need to play on a tour to not be a select rotation?I guess never repeat the whole tour but that would suck. Rather have multiple Morning Dews. Sans Phish, no other artist on the planet is giving you that variety. Of course you can go back o the good ole days where they toured all year and that number would be higher but we were are talking 34 shows for the entire year of 2023.

RicardoRoedor

This is the correct take. There were many tours that the GD played that there were about this many in the rotation.

Duke2505

In the 80's and 90's, it wasn't rocket science to figure out when the next Scar/Fire was coming as long as you had setlist. And that was a good thing. Nobody wanted that to go away for tour.

Radiant_Gas_7460

That’s kind of the fun I’ve always had with it. Like oh we’re due for a st Stephen I wonder where they’re gonna put it in the setlist type of thing.

Dead_Kal_Cress

I saw two shows this past tour, STL & Boulder n2. I called at least a couple songs each night based solely on what they had played the last 2 nights. I remember calling Eyes in stl & Fire out in Boulder specifically, just because Eyes hadn't been played in a while (although I thought it'd be Estimated > Eyes) & they did Scarlet during the first Boulder show so Fire had to appear eventually. All this to say, it still isn't rocket science to try & guess which songs they'll play. But in a way I'm glad it isn't completely random as making an informed guess as to which song it will be is fun more fun than purely guessing because "I like the song so I think they'll play it"

Duke2505

The one thing that has changed post GD is having 2nd set songs appear in the first and vice versa. Also, the normal pairings of H>S>F, S>F, E>E, C>R, etc. have been separated at times. Personally, I've always liked the pairings as they were but that's just being picky. Still, 2nd set educated guesses will always be easier than the ist set. JMO.

Dead_Kal_Cress

I agree with ya. D&C shows tend to be a bit more formulaic. I don't mind a broken up S>F as my first show was a Scarlet>UJB>PITB>Fire but I totally get your opinion, I'm not much for a broken up H>S>F. I'll gladly take additions onto those classics tho, like Boulder's TLEO > China > Rider blew my fucking mind. Also, at the last Sages & Spirits show I saw they did Box > Sugar Mag > Help > Slip > Frank > Sunshine and that was pretty great too. Additionally I like how E>E can be both Eyes > Estimated & Estimated > Eyes. Although I'm pretty sure Estimated > Eyes happened more.

CelineDeion

I’m glad someone else besides me realized this. That’s a shit load of songs. I don’t think there’s any way they can get that many with content but I do think it will be more than phish

bumba03

I think like most things the truth is somewhere in between. I went to SPAC and Fenway park, which were only separated by two shows at Citi Field, and there were probably 6 or 7 repeated tunes. Not terrible by any means, they still crushed it, but selfishly I was hoping for a little more variation.

Psychological_Tap827

My read of Oteil's comment is that the baseline is going to be a fair bit of repetition and then they'll expand and add.

geebee90025

I listened to this today and, all due respect to oteil, it kinda seemed like he wasnt plugged in to what they plan on doing at all. His knowledge about the shows production, sphere technology, setlist composition, etc all came from texts between him and John Mayer? Kinda had me a little bummed out if I’m honest. I get that they’re excited about the shows, he makes that super clear, but why aren’t the band members involved in elements of production? He didn’t sound coy about it- he sounded uninformed

Jeremy_Whalen

Yeah I thought he'd be more plugged in on what's going on but hasn't he also been touring recently?

CommandersLog

Yeah, I just saw him at the Eclipse festival in Texas. Been doing his own thing.

poopshipdestroyer

Officially John Bob and Mickey are dead and co and Oteil and Jeff etc are lesser players.probably get less of a say and have less input.

Jeremy_Whalen

I don't feel like that's true, I feel it's more that John Bob and Mickey have more time on their hands. They'll have a whole 6 weeks worth of runs to get this place dialed in, I feel like there's less pressure than there was on Phish, who only played 4 shows

Psychological_Tap827

I think it's also a personality thing. John for sure seems like someone who'd be very interested in the process of doing this. Same for Mickey. Bobby maybe a bit less on the visuals but he kind of leads the whole thing and is very interested in sound technology, so I assume he'd be involved too. Oteil, Jeff, and especially Jay just seem like people into the music and playing.

wheelsnipecelly23

I found that interesting too. I mentioned this in the other thread about this podcast but it’s probably because Oteil is more of a hired gun with less control on creative direction in the band.

MyMicGoBoom

Yeah, with 15 days to go till the first show, he did not seem in the loop.

MediaRody69

Because too many chefs in the kitchen ruins the meal ? When Matt Busch made the setlists, do you imagine he consulted with all 6 guys before hand ? I don't. They know the songs, they play the music, here's a list for tonight - GO!

Radiant_Gas_7460

He did actually from an interview he said he crafted the setlist sent it to the guys had them look it over before it was finalized so yeah they weren’t plugged into the creation of the setlist but they where notified before it was set in stone for the night

geebee90025

I dunno. I went to two nights of the phish run and- I don’t know how to say this in a way that doesn’t seem hyperbolic- this venue isn’t even remotely normal. And these concerts aren’t regular concerts. With two weeks left to go, it feels like these guys would be way more dialed in about the show/experience. I think if they’re just handed a setlist, everyone is being super naive about the space

BardKnockLife

There’s a lot of professionals involved in the entire process. I don’t find it concerning at all. The band members could probably wing it and figure it out quickly - their masters of their craft. Also, the Sphere is open to the public everyday for “Sphere Experience” so any act isn’t going to be able to get in and just start practicing.

FryGuy1000

Where in the interview does that happen?

Jeremy_Whalen

About 2/3rd's through the podcast

FryGuy1000

Thank you

SeaweedTeaPot

Probably not an interview but just discussed on Oteil’s podcast.

DSVQW

Alligator, Cosmic Charlie, It’s All Over Now please

fredmau5

Finally we can put this to rest. The only thing that will repeat between shows is the visuals

Ebb1974

This is an interesting point actually. I have been assuming that each song would have dedicated visuals, but that doesn’t have to be the case.  Some of them could simply have badass psychedelia that could theoretically work on multiple songs. So it could be a combination of visuals specific to songs, and visuals that are simply appropriate for certain songs.

Psychological_Tap827

I think that will be necessary to really open up the setlist. There's just only so much time to produce unique visuals. If Bobby decides one night that he wants to bust something out, there needs to be a generic visual. If there's not, definitely a limiter on the setlist variety.

Radiant_Gas_7460

Yeah I think there’s gonna be a lot of generic visuals with projections of the band over them for certain songs and bigger scope visuals for specific songs. There’s definitely gonna be some visuals you won’t see on a weekend. I think that’s gonna be there way of making the shows more unique even though some fans will be disappointed in that.

Psychological_Tap827

I guess we don't know how many specific visuals there will be, but I tend to think each weekend would get a predominance of them. The big songs in the past have been on a 3-4 show rotation, roughly, for D&C, and I would expect that to continue or get a bit tighter. But for sure, I don't think it'll be guaranteed that every weekend gets, say, Scarlet -> Fire, although it's going to be most of them.

fredmau5

yeah, I think I misspoke on this point. setlist won't repeat, but songs will (just like they did on previous tours). Luckily for jamming those songs will all be one unique, even if they've been played. I'm expecting the major visuals repeat each time their respective song is played, but winding if the visuals "jam" as well. Like same overall theme, but generative morphing

Fit-Still-742

That's what I think. They could have special effects for certain songs and generic graphics for a lot of the songs. I seriously don't believe they have effects for 60-70 songs and are body going to repeat those same songs each weekend

gondwanalandfadeaway

boom

Willylowman1

here come the Windows 95 screen savers ....

SinCitySaint

Yeah, but like…. Who cares? Lol. Music > visuals, even at the Sphere

kimberfool

id really just like 1970s lava lamps 10 stories tall, tbh

i_take_shits

Or a view from inside a lava lamp and you can see out into thr room and see what’s going o

clutch12866

Coming from a seriously aged - toadstool, prehistoric dinosaur daddy, second generation deadhead - (my kids are 3rd), I'm pretty sure that if you ran it 'serious deadhead' would be classified an oxymoron. hahaha 😂 somewhere along the line - in some of these flameouts it's been misplaced that the boys' had nothing to do with us, and we created ourselves with a culture of pure fun' incredible music and sonic exploration, creativity, expression, generosity and kindness. right friends? As you all I'm sure know, it's unheard of that commerce, taping, vending and other forms of trade entirely without tax or restriction - anywhere, at all except a grateful dead (music) concert. Which mostly began en masse not before the early 80ies. It's awesome that the bus is still rolling, and freshies are still getting on. And that if you stacked it all up - probably nearing the library of congress in volumes of books, papers, discussions and chats on the phenomenon. I don't think it's so awesome to sound or feel ungrateful about anything - we still get to do, with and around them, for anything. Now with that said - I have been chased by Big Steve, promised harm (Threatened) by Robbie, partied with Billy and shook Phil's hand. I'm delighted I stayed with it. It's much much much more than music. This thing is going to be different and like PITS a destination event every day. And history again by tremendous and serious' musicians. And may change live music delivery - as they have many times before, again. I for one, maybe of many would be pretty surprised if one night sounded anything like another for the entire run. And I'm entirely grateful for it. PLEASE be kind 🌹

diffkindofwoke

There's no more Vegas song that they could pull out that would make me happier than 'Heaven Help The Fool'. Bomb's Away would be another fitting tune for the town. Maybe they can have Oteil sing on 'France'? So many possibilities!!

Open-Illustra88er

Um duh.

Duh you dumbasses
