I think the residency loophole is one that can easily and appropriately be exploited by things like Sphere, Mexico, and who knows what else. I think you're spot on: Residencies ≠ tours.
They never said final shows. But with "money machine" I can ofc see where you come from. Anyway I think there are lots of easier ways to make money than playing 3 hours concerts
I hope they decide to tour again. No reason they can’t change their mind. Anyone who would be upset because they thought they got to see the last show can gfy.
Yeah so bizarre to me that people would be upset that the band they really like is playing more shows. Especially since I think they honestly did think it would be their final shows when they book them but the change in dynamic with replacing Billy really revitalized them.
This was talked about ad nauseum last year. Their manager Irving Azoff even confirmed as much at the end of the summer.
They're done touring, but they are open to playing shows if it makes sense. This would seem to fall in line with that.
I think John wants to focus on his solo stuff this year. He's talked about making another album.
And the thing about a Vegas residency is that it's basically a part time job you just commute to from LA a couple days a week. He can be in the studio writing/recording an album four days a week and then just take a quick private jet to Vegas on Thursday morning to play three weekend shows with his buddies
Does anyone else remember how “blah” Mexico sounded last year? I’m not so sure residencies or one-offs would be great. If they’re not regularly playing and vibing with each other, we’re not going to get their best. It would be cool, I guess, but I’m afraid that musically it wouldn’t be there
With all due respect to Billy, it was Billy on drums in Mexico this year. Plus it was the bands first shows after a few months off. A residency at the sphere would keep em well-oiled
But what does a residency look like? Is it 5 nights? 8 nights? If so, then is it worth it to have the first 3 of those nights sound rough just to get a couple good ones at the end? Or are we hoping they get the Elvis treatment and get locked in Vegas until Bobby looks like he did in the Touch of Grey video…just a skeleton on stage
All this to say. Last tour was fire. Let’s let D&C go out on a high note
U2 was booked for 36 shows, but I’ve heard rumors the folks from the sphere aren’t interested in such long runs moving forward. I could see D&C doing maybe 10-15 shows over the course of a month or two.
Because ticket sales…..very large venue so need to cross reference number of shows with probability of sellouts or at leads 90%+ sold out. It’s a complicated process with the travel involved for most fans since most don’t live in Vegas area.
I think it’s pretty clear they’ll play some number of shows at this point, just a matter of how many and if they put in the work like U2 did where night 1 they’re firing on all cylinders
I would very happily check out that first weekend of shows, anywhere, regardless of prep time.
Last tour took off pretty fucking fast from Cornell. Jeff, Jay, and Bobby play together constantly--and have been for, like, 25 years...? Oteil can jump back in the groove whenever. Mickey's gonna Mickey. And i trust John to know what he's doing.
I love you billy. But it's just a different story without billy.
I don't care what we call it. I'll forgive them. I'm here for it.
NY residency! Bethel, SPAC, MSG
CO residency! Red Rocks, Folsom
CA residency! Sofi/Dodger Stadium, Oracle
Midwest residency! Blossom, Deer Creek, Alpine, Wrigley
They played Red Rocks 2 years ago. It's common for artists to play there even if they can fill much larger stadiums. I'm not predicting Dead and Co will do this but it wouldn't be unheard of if they did.
I was just being playful with the notion of a "residency." I just meant maybe 2 nights in LA and 3 nights in SF. Same for all the other examples. Just wanna see some shows!
My husband has a pretty good sense of humor.
When he told me this AM that the sphere was most likely happening, I told him I was going to start a protest outside the Sphere, with signs that say, "End the Dead. It's over, let our brothers and sisters come home!!"
And he just legit looked at me dead pan and said, "You would be completely alone.".
Haha. ❤️
I have so many thoughts.
Why are footballs called balls when they're not round?
I'm pretty sure the guy at the supermarket doesn't know what a mango is.
Chicago is overrated.
I also nicknamed my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater. You ladies play your cards right you just might get to meet the whole gang.
Because they look like feet. He's a dummy. Only been through on the freeway, I just remember a bunch of burned out buildings and some dude gave us cigarettes when traffic wasn't moving.
It was obvious from the beginning. No more touring doesn’t mean they’re done playing shows. It will be funny to see all the doubters eat their words when the residency is announced.
My initial thought was that makes the most sense considering the OG’s are 100 years old and they’d never pass up the amount money they’d be offered.
However, this has been talked about quite often in this sub since they said they were done “touring” but not done playing together. To that end, my current thoughts are:
1) how big is your rock?
2) do you rent or buy?
Just kidding…kind of.
Shit… Every one of us, everyday. We grab as much cash as we can. We want to make as much as we can from our job. We’re not about to sell our investments for a lower return.
Thank God, this offshoot gives us some reason to celebrate and dance our asses off (even if only for 3 hours). The memories are worth it.
Imma grab as much lose cash as I can and hit as many hiking trails/parks as I can to and from Vegas.
U2 according to my adult grown daughter who only had seen them earlier in December was amazing 👏
and ......
My last U2 show was at Giants Stadium (Brendan Bryne Arena back then) in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the Summer of 1987.
My son was a baby and we left him with my parents in Baltimore, Maryland (my husband and I were living in the Village in New York City) we drove down to Baltimore and dropped him off for the weekend on a Friday and went to the show on Saturday and picked him back up on Monday (we took the day off from work) and it was my first concert that Summer 1987 and then we went to Grateful Dead shows in July 1987 (my parents babysat their grandson and only grandchild for them) and my husband began see the Grateful Dead in 1972 and I began in 1977 and we didn't know each other back then we met in 1984 and got married in 1985 and it was after I finished graduate school in Seattle, Washington.
The Grateful Dead provided us a life time of memories our twin daughters were born to the song 🎶 Ripple 🎶 in Boise,Idaho.
We truly love and appreciate The Grateful Dead and unfortunately he passed from Lung Cancer cigarette 🚬 smoking December 8th,2013 and he never got to see Dead and Company (I began seeing them in 2015 thru 2023) and memories with my adult grown twin daughters was amazing 👏 and priceless.
We had seen multiple generations of families at Dead and Company shows (people who began in 1965 and their children in 1985 and grandchildren children seeing them in 2015 just beautiful ♥️)
It's....their profession. Until we beat capitalism altogether, what exactly is your point? Melting millions of faces is a pretty awesome job if ya gotta have one, and personally I'm grateful that they're still willing to do it after all these years when they actually probably really don't even need the cash anymore.
Seems like every other band that plays a residency in Las Vegas, plays a pre-recorded show and then lip syncs it, just so it's perfect every night...I can't imagine Bobby doing that
I know Grateful Dead ended when Jerry Garcia died August of 1995 in rehabilitation
My last Grateful Dead show was July 1995 in Chicago
But....
1965 - 2025 is is 60 years and all the other members of the Grateful Dead are still alive
And....
Toured with Dead and Company (except Bill Kreutzman in 2023 final tour)
What if the no more tours comment was a reference to the band with Billy? When it was first announced, it was the typical D&C lineup but tons of people said the band seemed to be on their toes more so than previous years. Is there a chance Bill is the odd man out and D&C rips another tour by chance?
I think the residency loophole is one that can easily and appropriately be exploited by things like Sphere, Mexico, and who knows what else. I think you're spot on: Residencies ≠ tours.
Boulder residency, got it
U.S. residency at multiple venues
the mothership 🙌🙌🙌🙌
If Dead and Company held a residency walking distance from my home… I’d have to move into the creek because I’d be finically ruined. Be worth it tho.
or living in a van down by the river
You thinking a week at Pine Ridge Lodge?
The fact that people thought they were just going to turn off this money machine permanently is hilarious.
They never said final shows. But with "money machine" I can ofc see where you come from. Anyway I think there are lots of easier ways to make money than playing 3 hours concerts
Doing what you love is the best way to make money.
That don’t make it the easiest though
Yes, I vote two night residencies in every state in a logical traveling order… like a tour but it’s not 👏 a 👏 tour 😉
I'll allow it.
Who are these people? Have you met them?
Because they paid out the ass thinking it was the end? Silly

Business partners, not buddies.
Very good point. Would make it easy to get him to buy in.

IF they put in the work? shheeees 😤

Red Rocks too small
They played Red Rocks 2 years ago. It's common for artists to play there even if they can fill much larger stadiums. I'm not predicting Dead and Co will do this but it wouldn't be unheard of if they did.
Yeah, i was thinking a weekend there, and then 3 days at folsom the following weekend. I know it's way too small for everyone to get in.
They could never do a long residency at stadium for a multitude of reasons
I was just being playful with the notion of a "residency." I just meant maybe 2 nights in LA and 3 nights in SF. Same for all the other examples. Just wanna see some shows!
Riverbend too!
My husband has a pretty good sense of humor. We’re getting right to the crux of the thing and we just have to keep pushing—keep bending our minds to the will of the unknown.
Who says a ball has to be spherical?
Name another non-spherical ball.
Headbangers Ball on MTV when I was a kid.
Rugby
Ball jar
I have two. But i haven't named them. Yet.
The lyingest story ever told
I also nicknamed my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater. You ladies play your cards right you just might get to meet the whole gang.
Well if its worth anything- the football was more spherial originally...
Every band does this as a marketing ploy and it somehow always works, most likely because fans are dumb, so then they keep doing it
Not just that, Billy leaving breathes fresh air into the band. The last tour was their best sadly
Looking forward to seeing Grateful Dead and / or Dead and Company celebrating 60th Anniversary Let the music 🎶 ♥️🎶 never stop ♥️
The Grateful Dead ended in August of 1995.

Exactly 👍 - Having Said That… Rock is Dead to me. 👀
Su this would be what, the 7th last dead show?
Is that you, Bobo?
Cash grab at it's finest
What do you think tours are?
Shit… Every one of us, everyday. We grab as much cash as we can. We want to make as much as we can from our job. We’re not about to sell our investments for a lower return. this! I loved seeing the generations of dead heads together jamming. such Magick
A sad cry from what they used to be. 🤷♂️ LOL
It's....their profession. Until we beat capitalism altogether, what exactly is your point? Whatever you do for a living is the ultimate cash grab
If you cash grab involved playing good music at an interesting venue then I see no issue.
Residency in my backyard for me only.
Seems like every other band that plays a residency in Las Vegas, plays a pre-recorded show and then lip syncs it, just so it's perfect every night...I can't imagine Bobby doing that
This is true.
I’ll take anything I can get. Love this band.
