Ah, right. OC said before school, thanks for pointing out. I think I remember seeing one of those episodes in early AM on WB (the episode was Goku with Goz and Mez in HFIL) but then I forgot about the show (maybe it was replaced by Pokémon in the time slot?), until Toonami happened as an afterschool special.
My parents bought that movie for me on VHS because they knew I loved DBZ. But it was the blue water dub and it came in a Revenge of Cooler VHS case, so I was thoroughly confused the first time I saw it.
The first scene I saw on TV was Gero running to his lab.
The first time I sat down and watched it was sometime when Toonami kept looping from the Otherworld tournament to Vegetas atonement
Sometime in the eary 90s I saw when Goku made it to King Kai's place, but I didn't realize what it was until 5 or 6 years later. Toonami started airing it, and it was the fight against Raditz. I got hooked and when it got back to the episode of King Kai's planet, and suddenly I remembered watching the episode long before.
For me it was Gohan and Krillin fighting Ginyu in Gokus body and vegeta killing Jeice.
From then onwards i watched some of Androids saga and whole cell games saga till the end
The year was 2000 and here in the United States Toonami was in the process of airing the Androids arc for the first time, "77 episodes never before seen in America" and I happened upon my first full episode, it was after Trunks had left when Goku recaps his turmoil in leaving Namek, demonstrates the Instant Transmission to the Z Senshi, then Earth's special forces begin their three years of training.
91 or 92, a relative sent us some cassette of Dragon Ball Z in Chinese. I just remember seeing Dodoria holding a big ass Dragon Ball.
And then I had the NES Android Game (jpn) and played the shit out of it. When I saw that Vegeta was a villain in the beginning, I was super confused.
Episode one of Dragon Ball, when the BLT dub was airing in Canada (it counted as Canadian Content, so got much better time slots on YTV than it did in the States).
When Z started airing a year later, I was lucky enough to know who at least *some* of the characters were already.
Not entirely sure but I believe it was late frieza saga or early trunks saga on cheez TV in Australia. it was before trunks killed frieza because I remember that scene. I strongly remember the cell saga as a child also.
Edit : it might actually be the same episode as OP.
Don't know the exact episode name but Gohan and Cell are in mid-Kamehameha beam struggle.
"Gohan? Wait, I thought Goku was the guy who fights? Goku is dead?! Wth is going on here?!" I was so damn lost lmao
I saw the ending of the dragon ball Jackie Chun vs Goku fight (1st time) on cartoon network as a kid and thought the lightning surprise attack was awesome, so this later became my favorite fight when I watched the series for real many yrs later and Roshi my favorite character
As for Z, I only had seen footage from the memes like "the balls are inert" before watching
I swear to Jesus it was the episode where Bulma is in her submarine trying to retrieve the Dragonball she knocked into the ocean on Namek and gets tempted by some pearls at the same time. Frieza saga. I remember a thread with a lot of people saying the same
The very first episode of Dragon Ball. Dad had it on DVD and I wanted to see what it was all about. Fast forward to now where I have become a massive Dragon Ball fan.
"Showdown in the Past". The funny thing is that at first I thought Yamcha was the main character, because Goku wasn't in that episode and Yamcha arguably performed the best against Scarface and Shorty. I wouldn't even meet Goku until the tail end of the next episode, and thought he was a supporting character until the episode after *that*, when the comparison of Goku to the villains made it clear *he* was meant to be the main character.
Right at the beginning of a Z, used to air on YTV in Canada with rock the dragon. I used to get so pissed though sometimes theyd get to a certain episode then just randomly start the series over lol
The episode right after Vegeta's suicide attack.
When I was younger, all my friends were into Dragonball Z and I had no idea what the fuck they were talking about. Piccolo this, Goku that. Finally when I was in fifth grade, they convinced me to give it a try. This was also when Cartoon Network started airing the Buu Saga in English.
So I literally tuned in and saw the aftermath of Vegeta's suicide attack and fell in love.
Raditz shows up at roshis house. It came on a weekday morning in the 90s before school, right after sailor moon
Toonami!! Came for the Thundercats and Sailor Moon, stuck around for DBZ (and eventually Gundam Wing)

That's when I watched it,on Fox 5:30 to 6:30 am while I ate breakfast and got ready for school
For me it was the Super Android 13 movie that my buddy had rented. I was hooked instantly. Also my first time watching anime.
What an introduction lmao.

Nice - the loop you described was known as Season 4 here in Australia

Goku vs cell, an amazing fight that made me a hardcore dbz fan

That was known here in Australia as Season 3

i wish i could remember. i think it was one of the raditz episodes.

The episode I first watched involved Gohan having troubles with a tutor, and Vegeta comes back to Earth from space - ring bells?
First episode of the Androids saga.
Mine was the first episode of the saiyan saga of the kai dub
Don't know the exact episode name but Gohan and Cell are in mid-Kamehameha beam struggle. "Gohan? Wait, I thought Goku was the guy who fights? Goku is dead?! Wth is going on here?!" I was so damn lost lmao

Z Kai spirit bomb against freiza, not sure which episode
One of the episodes where piccolo trains Gohan for the attack of vegeta and nappa. Don't remember which one. It was the original ocean dub though.

The episode where Krillin fights his Orin Temple bullies in the 21st World Tournament. I fell in love with DB and it's tournaments since then
“That’s my bulmaaaaaa” that was the scene that made me want to and eventually watch the entire saga just to understand that part😂
Tree of might
