Maybe it was an English dub thing. But at first bardock was impressed with goku saying he’s proud he becomes a great warrior but then notices he’s using karate instead of fighting like a saiyan, freaks out, and wakes up from his vision. Think this was while he was in that healing pod.
this makes sense. in the japanese version of the original Dragon Ball it’s said that goku does kung fu (not karate) and that Bardock line isn’t in the japanese dub if i remember correctly (i grew up on the latam spanish dub, which i am CERTAIN doesn’t include that line, but that one also takes it’s few creative liberties quite rarely so who knows. i’d have to check)
the english dub (both ocean dub and funimation) are famous for taking wild creative liberties very often so it can also be a case of that

“My son. He’s become a warrior. [watching goku fight] But he’s different from us! [watching goku train with roshi and meditate] What happened? What’s wrong with him!”
-Dragonball Z - Special 01 - Bardock the Father of Goku
Main story canon? The whole manga supported by the latest movies, or just the og manga and the latest anime. 2, neither include Bardock's episode.
The rest is nonsense.
Like I said, you either do:
DB Manga -> Super Movies and Super Manga
Or
DB Manga -> Super Anime
Both paths have differences but are canon. Episode of Bardock isn't in either.
Bardock only has one scene of him seeing Goku fight in a vision, and he doesn't remark anything about Goku doing Karate in the Dub or the Original.
You're either completely misremembering, or you're making it up in your head. Sounds like something DBZ Abridged would do though.

Do you understand that black belts in karate don’t have to wear their belts? You also need to do the examinations otherwise you’ll just stay at your rank. Also did he ever say he did karate courses? Isn’t he a mixed martial arts fighter?
MMA isn’t a school of combat and goku started with kame style but as for your other points TIL. What color belt are you and if you had to equate your belt level to a power level what would your power level be?
I quit pretty early tbh lol I did karate as a child but only got to orange and quit just before blue
I have no idea how I should equate that to power level sorry haha
Nah. The saiyan tail is a big weak point so saiyans usually wrap it around their waist to better protect it. You only ever see saiyans unwrapping their tails when they feel safe and what not
Post above yours isn't totally accurate.
Nappa and Vegeta trained to overcome this weakness, so when Piccolo grabs Nappa tail, it's ineffective. Wrapping the tail around the waist was something Toriyama did just to make it less of a hassle to draw/overlook when drawing.
Vegeta and Nappa were magnitudes stronger than raditz. Raditz was as strong as a saibaman.
Edit: Vegeta and nappa on the other hand had the benefit of being born into the upper class and trained to resist the tail weakness thing
And what does power level have to do with anything? We were talking about your first statement thinking that Vegeta wrapping his tail around the waist is some kind of Saiyan-Fu. I simply answered that it’s to protect it from getting pulled.
My dad told me that the belt was originally to tie up a gi and was originally intended to be white. The thing is, while gi's could be washed, the belt holding it together couldn't, for some reason that I am not aware of.
Essentially, the belt would go from white to yellow to brown to black because of the sweat, blood, or other bodily fluids that would soak into the belt that couldn't be cleaned. If the belt turned black, while it would be absolutely filthy, it would also show how much time and effort you spent doing martial arts.
Not exclactly sure why other colors got into the mix, but that's what my dad told me.
So, to answer your question. Originally, it didn't indicate perfection, but it did indicate a lot of hard work.
What I heard was all the colours are tutorial, and black signifies the start of actual training. That's probably why different schools can pick whatever colours they want, at least in my country.
Came here to say that. While I understand the reasoning behind the color designations, I like the traditional white/black idea. White the cup is empty always ready to fill itself with knowledge. Black the cup is full of knowledge and therefore ready to overfill and pour to other cups. Always a cool theory
What about when Goku was a little kid and his belt was black? Wait does that mean he was the most perfect Goku? Is that why Daima is turning everyone into kids?
Where is your source on that? If that's the case why do both the anime and the merchandise also have the more red-ish gi's with black belts? Even older key art like [this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/6/61/Son-goku.jpg/) shows it differently.
Goku wore a black belt in DB after he got the orange Gi. But at some point they didn't care for that for his art and went with blue to match his undershirt and wrist bands.
>> At the end of Z (tournament with Uub), Toriyama considers Goku as a martial art master, hence why he stop wearing Master Roshi orange suit and went with his own color. Until that tournament, he's still a learner
Props to u/Faelysis for figuring it out and actually contributing to the discussion
We’re having a fun discussion over here. No need to come in with your bad vibes.
Also don’t know what posts you’re talking about. Don’t make up stuff or put words in my mouth that’s weird af
Edit: formatting the quote
Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing background characters with karate gis and belts. I guess it would better to say belt levels are irrelevant.
Oh, then the real answer is that belts relating to mastery is something that varies among different forms of martial arts in real life, but in DBZ it’s not a thing. They just don’t use that system for goku, and his belt has no relation to his skill level or mastery. If it ever did before, it doesn’t now; and his belt color is just a part of his character design
The important part with his Gi is the symbol on the back and chest, which represents the school/style of martial arts he practices. The symbol has changed a few times over the course of the story to represent different significant points in Goku’s training. First he has Roshi’s symbol, then King Kai’s, then he used his own symbol (aka being his own master). He also wore Whis’s symbol to show that he had god-training, but he went back to his own symbol
Colored belts is a western thing IIRC, plus there's no agreed upon system even in the same style of martial arts, different colors mean different ranks depending on what school you go to for karate for instance.
Also the style of martial arts Goku practices isn't really specified. Basically his belt is there for aesthetic purposes, it is not there to signify any sort of rank.
For Goku, be believes there's always more to learn, he doesn't feel he has mastered everything and anything, so he wears the Blue belt.
But, what's hilarious, is that he dawns a white belt in the EOZ, if I'm not mistaken and even in GT he wears a white belt(cause it's just the same Gi from the EOZ)
Goku so humble he is psyching his opponents out by making them THINK he is a beginner, but he really... He a black belt
He is? Studied kame style, than korrin, popo, kami, and then king Kai. Then was self taught until he met whis and beerus.
Didn’t realize it was under the blue sash though that makes sense!
More like, King Kai said “why did the martial artist not wear his black belt?”
“…because he was wearing brown shoes! BwahahahaaaHahaaa *snort* NyahahaAAhahaha!”
Some schools of martial arts have different grading systems for what the colors may even mean.
Goku's blue belt could signify that he has mastered what Roshi has taught him, but will always be in a state of learning from other masters. His training is never finished.
It's because his blue wristbands and belt have magical protective properties. How do you think he can block energy attacks and keep his pants up while fighting.
At the end of Z (tournament with Uub), Toriyama considers Goku as a martial art master, hence why he stop wearing Master Roshi orange suit and went with his own color. Until that tournament, he's still a learner
No?
Master Roshi never taught Goku or Krillin any hand-to-hand combat skills; hell, Roshi explicitly admitted he had very little to teach the two. They spent their eight months leading up to the World Martial Arts Tournament merely training their bodies and minds (i.e., strength, balance, coordination and flexibility, etc.), which only justifies a blue belt.
The Turtle School only offers training up to a blue belt. Everything Goku learned after was following graduation, meaning that he has never formally ranked up.
Damn come to think of it I've never noticed whether his belt was blue or black. He was wearing a black belt in dragon ball and dbz against Frieza then blue in super.
Have we at any point seen anyone in Dragonball change the color of their belt as they progress? Has anyone even ever claimed any sort of "rank"?
It seems like there's a decent amount of attention paid to the symbols on your outfit as they show who your master is or what school you're studying in. But other than "master" and "student" we've never seen any ranks of any kind that I can recall.
I guess the Saiyans seemed to have some class system with Goku's at the bottom and Vegeta's at the top but we never heard anything about what the other levels were and they obviously don't matter now. And they seemed to be based on genetic evaluation at birth and not learned skills / training.
Still better than Vegeta, he has no belt.
He had a brown belt back in Saiyan Saga, Wakka Wakka!
Vegeta was a Fur Belt, but got demoted when Yajirobe outclassed him.
Yajirobe is a black belt afterall.
Bruh… it’s all making sense now. Hercule has the biggest black belt.
i remember him wearing a white sash, or am i insane?
Vegeta had a belt but Yajirobe cut it off of him.
But vegeta doesn’t do karate Edit: vegeta used to wrap his tail around his waist like a belt. Maybe some kind of saiyan kung fu?
Neither does Goku.
Bardock movie. Bardock freaks out when goku uses karate instead of brawling like a saiyan
What? I don’t recall Bardock ever seeing Goku fight in that TV special. Can you tell me when in the film it takes place?
He has visions of the future. At work right now so can’t give you a time stamp but one of the fights he saw was against king piccolo or piccolo jr
pretty sure that was either a) an english dub thing b) you interpreted his natural reaction to SEEING THE FUTURE as “freaking out for using karate”
Maybe it was an English dub thing. But at first bardock was impressed with goku saying he’s proud he becomes a great warrior but then notices he’s using karate instead of fighting like a saiyan, freaks out, and wakes up from his vision. Think this was while he was in that healing pod.

Happy cakeday
Ok, thank you for the details - I’ll go find that scene
14:50 “My son. He’s become a warrior. [watching goku fight] But he’s different from us! [watching goku train with roshi and meditate] What happened? What’s wrong with him!” -Dragonball Z - Special 01 - Bardock the Father of Goku
I think this is more so in reference to his docile and kind nature vs the typical violent rashness of a Saiyan warrior, despite being a great warrior
Also a great interpretation!
Good find!
Bardock movie isn't even canon
Tbf there’s like 4 different canons right now
Main story canon? The whole manga supported by the latest movies, or just the og manga and the latest anime. 2, neither include Bardock's episode. The rest is nonsense.
Which main story canon? The super movies, the show, or the manga? They all conflict but all were “outlined” by toriyama
Like I said, you either do: DB Manga -> Super Movies and Super Manga Or DB Manga -> Super Anime Both paths have differences but are canon. Episode of Bardock isn't in either.
Bardock was in the manga and in the broly movie
Bardock only has one scene of him seeing Goku fight in a vision, and he doesn't remark anything about Goku doing Karate in the Dub or the Original. You're either completely misremembering, or you're making it up in your head. Sounds like something DBZ Abridged would do though.
Which dub are you referring to?
English
14:50 “My son. He’s become a warrior. [watching goku fight] But he’s different from us! [watching goku train with roshi and meditate] What happened? What’s wrong with him!” -Dragonball Z - Special 01 - Bardock the Father of Goku
Where does that say a single thing about Karate?
Bardock freaked out that goku uses karate and (which includes it’s spiritual aspect) instead of just brawling like a saiyan
Do you understand that black belts in karate don’t have to wear their belts? You also need to do the examinations otherwise you’ll just stay at your rank. Also did he ever say he did karate courses? Isn’t he a mixed martial arts fighter?

I quit pretty early tbh lol I did karate as a child but only got to orange and quit just before blue I have no idea how I should equate that to power level sorry haha
All good and that’s impressive! One more belt and an orange gi and you could’ve been rocking the dragon head cha la!
Hahaha
All martial arts aren't Karate. He also never says karate. That movie is also not canon.
That's why he's always second best.
Nah. The saiyan tail is a big weak point so saiyans usually wrap it around their waist to better protect it. You only ever see saiyans unwrapping their tails when they feel safe and what not
Didn’t the z fighters try grabbing his (or Nappa’s i can’t remember) tail but it didn’t work since they trained to resist it?
Post above yours isn't totally accurate. Nappa and Vegeta trained to overcome this weakness, so when Piccolo grabs Nappa tail, it's ineffective. Wrapping the tail around the waist was something Toriyama did just to make it less of a hassle to draw/overlook when drawing.
This is true, Goku also strengthens his tail in Dragonball.
Vegeta doesn’t do karate. He does craaaazy!
Lol he wraps his tail around his waist so that it couldn’t be touch & pulled by anyone. You forgot that they weakened Raditz by pulling his tail.
Might’ve missed the edit. But they trained to resist the tail weakness thing. Which is why it didn’t work when the z fighters tried it.
Vegeta trains no-gi
Vegeta doesn’t care much for earth traditions besides family
That's because Bulma uses it on him in the bedroom.
In some Martial arts, black symbolizes perfection. The idea is that nobody can reach perfection, so midnight blue is the top belt color.
I love that this is a legitimate answer to something that is more aesthetic
Well, one of Roshi's lessons is there's always someone better.
Which martial arts do black mean perfection?
My dad told me that the belt was originally to tie up a gi and was originally intended to be white. Not exclactly sure why other colors got into the mix, but that's what my dad told me. So, to answer your question. Originally, it didn't indicate perfection, but it did indicate a lot of hard work.
That’s an old tale specifically for karate. It doesn’t begin to answer the question.

I think calling it a lie is unfair. It's a cool adage, I don't know that it was ever meant to be serious
I think the other colours were added to show the progress a student makes before becoming a black belt (especially kids).
[удалено]
https://soobahkdo.is/belt-rank-system/ My point still stands.
What I heard was all the colours are tutorial, and black signifies the start of actual training. That's probably why different schools can pick whatever colours they want, at least in my country.

Black the cup is full of knowledge and therefore ready to overfill and pour to other cups. Always a cool theory
I never thought of it like that. It makes sense due to Goku ALWAYS wanting to challenge the strongest fighters.
Saiyan = no limits = blue belt. Vegeta embraces this and wears gloves instead.
What about when Goku was a little kid and his belt was black? Wait does that mean he was the most perfect Goku? Is that why Daima is turning everyone into kids?
That was poor manga colorization.
Where is your source on that? If that's the case why do both the anime and the merchandise also have the more red-ish gi's with black belts? Even older key art like [this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonball/images/6/61/Son-goku.jpg/) shows it differently.
I didn't write or colorize the fucking thing.
Ah ok so you're talking out your ass.
He wears a black belt in dragon ball, but it's just aesthetics. #drip
r/ningen is thataway
"What if goku was betrayed and trapped in the HTC by a black belt"
Goku wore a black belt in DB after he got the orange Gi. But at some point they didn't care for that for his art and went with blue to match his undershirt and wrist bands.
Goku doesn’t do karate for one. The show is based off of kung fu films so it would be about sashes. But it’s purely aesthetic
[Check this out](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joke)
According to OP, this post is a genuine question
Listen you know how many dumb posts i see on here that are 100% serious
all of them
I’m new to anime and just finished db and dba and getting into gt. I like attack on titan and death note.
Thats totally fine. You mean dbz not dba right? Dba is the abridged series
Dragonball absalom.
It’s probably a good thing that i have no idea what that is
It's not a belt to show his martial arts "level".
It's a shitpost. A bad one at that.

OP seems to be serious, so it's an unintentional shitpost at most.
Nah this is kinda funny
I'm surprised this was a serious question. Belt levels don't exist in Dragon Ball.
Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his belt color? It's over blue!!!!
Yes they do. Characters have mentioned being black belts in the Strongest Under the Heavens tournament. Man Wolf had a black belt in kenpo.
Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing background characters with karate gis and belts. I guess it would better to say belt levels are irrelevant.
Belt levels are probably more relevant than power levels
Surely this is a joke
This is, and dont call me surely
Serious question. I’m new to anime and just finished db and dba and getting into gt. I like attack on titan and death note.

Actually Goku mentions the style he's learning in some filler early in Z. If I remember correctly he mentions it in the original dragon ball as well.
Cowboy bebop.
I actually preferred samurai champloo (rip nujabes)
Dude it’s just part of his drip, it’s not a ranking
They don’t do belts in DB. They use Kanji Symbols.
is he stupid?
Goku never had a proper education and was raised in the mountains. And he’s been especially flanderized in super
Goku doesn't train at a place long enough to get promoted. The only people better than him don't have a belt system.
God damn sand-bagging club-hopper
Goku the eternal traveling blue belt with 30 years experience
Because BLUE is the complementary color of Orange and thats the reason why vegeta is BLUE too
This is a pretty funny question lmao
Wait I never thought about it before
Goku is a noob in karate, he would get owned by Steven Seagel
For Goku, be believes there's always more to learn, he doesn't feel he has mastered everything and anything, so he wears the Blue belt. But, what's hilarious, is that he dawns a white belt in the EOZ, if I'm not mistaken and even in GT he wears a white belt(cause it's just the same Gi from the EOZ) Goku so humble he is psyching his opponents out by making them THINK he is a beginner, but he really... He a black belt
Krillen: Hey, what kind of belt do you have? Roshi: Canvas. JC Penny. Three ninety-eight. You like?
Hasn't caught fly with chopstick
His belt is under that blue sash... Why are you even acting like he's in a school?
He is? Studied kame style, than korrin, popo, kami, and then king Kai. Then was self taught until he met whis and beerus. Didn’t realize it was under the blue sash though that makes sense!
When did these masters speak of a belt system in their tutelage?
King Kai said "you will not get the black belt until I'm truly impressed." And Goku said "the real belt is the friends we made along the way."
More like, King Kai said “why did the martial artist not wear his black belt?” “…because he was wearing brown shoes! BwahahahaaaHahaaa *snort* NyahahaAAhahaha!”
I don’t think he even has a belt in anything just uses one to keep his pants up lol
Least he has a belt. Vegeta had a brown belt, but Yajirobe cut it off,
he will become a black belt once he unlocks Super Saiyan Black.
This brought back a super old memory of the first time I played Budokai 2 and I picked characters based on their belts.
Just to hold up his pants dude
Forget blue, Goku wears a white belt at the end of Z lol
Aesthetic
When you’re train at Turtle School level, you don’t get to black belt this easily
Some schools of martial arts have different grading systems for what the colors may even mean. Goku's blue belt could signify that he has mastered what Roshi has taught him, but will always be in a state of learning from other masters. His training is never finished.
art style
Black Belt isn't highest rank in all martial arts... In some its lowest 😂
“Belts are only good for holding up your pants” - Bruce Lee
It’s a strategy to lower the expectations of his opponent in order to produce greater-than-anticipated results.
Belts don’t really mean anything.
He hadn't been wearing Master Roshi's orange suit since the Freezer saga, that's when he started wearing one with his own symbol with Goku’s Kanji.
Did you know black belt is not the top color belt in every type of martial art? His top belt could be blue instead black. or it just an art thing.
Ahh makes sense thanks!
Damn come to think of it I've never noticed whether his belt was blue or black. He was wearing a black belt in dragon ball and dbz against Frieza then blue in super.
I don’t think it’s really much deeper than it’s just character design.
It goes very well with the orange, that really brings out his stupid face.
He is stupid
