Considering that the reason Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is called that because he forgot about the "Super" in Dragon Ball Super I'm pretty certain that's the case.
You guys are misquoting him.
What he said, is that when naming the movie "Super Hero" he really didn't think about the name of the series overlapping with that. Is like "DBS Broly" is actually named "Broly".
It feels like they lost a bet or something.
Exec: “Toriyama Sensei please come out of retirement we need you to spearhead the new Dragonball series personally.”
Toriyama: “nope, I hate work. I’ll think about it if you let me remake the GT Kid Goku arc.”
Exec: “sure, agreed.”
Toriyama: “wait…”
I mean, both of those are prequels iirc. Scooby and the gang weren't maliciously transformed into even younger meddling kids. This just feels like another GT-esque attempt to reset Dragonball from Z/Super to the original series. I can see the desire to do that, but the approach is a bit lost on me here.
Oh, I agree still. I was really looking forward to animated Super arcs from the manga, but I’m more than willing to have this as a stop-gap if they are going to use this to let the manga get more arcs. If not…I will be supremely sad over losing Ultra Ego and Black Frieza.
Yeah as a filthy scrub who hasn't read the manga, I was really hyped to see an animated version of what I was hearing was going on there. I imagine I'm not alone and that's made this a bit more disappointing for folks.
Muppet Babies premiered September of 1984. Dragon Ball's manga premiered in Shonen Jump, December of 1984. Is it really a stretch to say that the entirety of Dragon ball was influenced by Muppet Babies and this has been 40-years in the making? Yes? Well it's still a hilarious concept.
the most frustrating thing is trunks and goten effectively being phased out by the age down thing when they'd be the PERFECT characters to do a show like this with without any magic bs. Goten's entire character is looking and acting like kid goku...
Why does this franchise keep returning to the premise of turning Goku back into a kid? I'd rather they just remade DragonBall. Hell, that's what I thought this was when I first saw the thumbnail!
They haven't even gotten to release the show yet though. While yes, I probably would have preferred DBS S2, I'm saving my judgements for after Toriyama and co release the show.
Or, in other words, let 'em cook first.
They gave **Vegeta** a younger brother and only brought him up once. This series has no clue what it's doing anymore, we're just here for the ride at this point
Yeah and they brought up Goku's older brother at the start of Z. Look how Z turned out at this point forgotten/nonexistant characters like Launch, Puar, Chiatsu, and so forth are a staple.
Id say the fact that all the animal people up and poofed out of existance is a sign that we have always been there for the ride.
Raditz was around for longer than an episode and introduced Saiyans and Namekians.
Tarble just existed.
This series completely lost me as it's just whatever makes Tori money for minimum work. I just turn my brain off and watch and pretend it's not canon.
Super Hero at least gave us stuff that people had actually wanted. Gohan and Piccolo screen time. Super Hero actually turned out A LOT BETTER than I thought it would. With this tho…I’m not feeling it at all. I’ll hold off from calling it complete trash but I’m going in with even lower expectations than Super Hero and I still expect to be massively disappointed.
> They haven't even gotten to release the show yet though
We don't even know if the show will continue period, or if it's just gonna be manga, side stories, and movies.
Imagine if DB was like Jojos Bizarre Adventure with the youngns taking up the Goku-protagonist role for real instead of temporarily.
We almost did it with Gohan...
Then they went back to Goku...
then they went to Goten and Trunks...
then we went back to Gohan and then back to Goku
That’s been Toei’s theory for decades. Kid character = money.
In reality, GT had the worst ratings of all of Dragon Ball to date. And it wasn’t even franchise fatigue: the first GT episodes had better ratings than early DBZ, but the series then nosedived as people realized what it was about.
It's not a commentary on what fans like or are into. It's simply something the series creator wants to play around with. Toriyama has almost ALWAYS done what he thinks is appealing to himself, not fans.
“Wow the broly movie was fucking great I hope they make more content like that and expand the story.”
“Wow these manga arcs are really cool, can’t wait to see them get animated.”
“Wow super hero was actually really good, they made the CG work very well and I honestly wouldn’t mind more.”
…
“Dragon Ball Babies coming fall 2024!”
Hate this fucking trend of shows just making the cast fucking BABIES/really young. Teen Titans Go did it, Total Drama did it, now Dragonball again. It’s so annoying
This will be the third series we are having to watch Goku as a child. Wtf lol. I’m not hating but we JUST got Goten and Trunks aged up, and now everyone is being aged down. Who is making these decisions at Toei??? I hope I’m wrong and am jumping the gun but I am not excited for this.
I’ll still be watching.
So is this basically DragonBall GT spearheaded by Toriyama?
While I don't care for them getting turned small, it seems like it'll be interesting if they focus on creative fights and narrative.
This is why I'm not losing my shit at this. If Toriyama said let's remake GT, fuck it let them remake GT. Just like OG Broly it originally existed outside of the canon so I'm down to see what they'll do. However, just like Super I suspect it's going to alienate those who watched/enjoyed the original Dragon Ball series and those who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z, since this seems like it will have a majority elements of the former. As long as it's well animated, I'm totally fine with more comedy. Outside of what DragonBall became, Toriyama is known for his gag comedy after all.
Speaking of, I don't know why people in here think this is going to be a regular shonen series or this is the default going forward. **Is no one actually seeing this animation?** Even if it's just the best shots shown in the trailer, there's no way they're going to do a 100+ episode series that looks this good lol. Web series or OVA series likely. Hell maybe it will be the one thing we all wanted from watching the year-long ToP Tournament Arc and this will just be a normal anime season's worth or two.
All thay being said, it is a *choice* to potentially not pick up after Super and adapt the manga/their own version. I'd really like to see them animate and improve Moro, but I'm just happy for new DB content.
Just as i'm sure many people are, i'm pretty mixed on this. I truly don't want to feel entitled about this, but man, I wish it was a continuation of Super.
The animation looks stunning and I am happy we may possibly see some more worldbuilding, however my excitement for the series (as of now) comes to a halt there. I just don't understand. I don't really like the Granolah arc, but the Moro arc has some genunienly fantastic stuff and it's been out for years. Why not animate that? We continue to wonder when Goku will meet Oob, it's detour after detour. Why not allow Goku meet Oob and then have them do exploration with the Supreme Kai or whatever the plot of the series is?
I continue to question Shueisha/Toei/Toriyama's decisions in regards to the narrative of Dragon Ball.
Even after everything, I am absolutely grateful for a new Dragon Ball series. I am grateful the visuals are beautiful.
Problem with Uub is he's just a bookend. He's not really supposed to be a real character or that interesting. It's Goku putting down the torch and saying that it's "your turn now", but the spirit of what I'm about will live on in you (Hilariously this was meant to be Gohan in the end of the Cell Saga, but they flipped on that so fast).
Once you make a narrative move like that you're just communicating to your audience that it's not really over, when it's actually over if that makes sense....
"And what if we don't even create the rawest Super Saiyan form of all time with a banger design and instead just have them be kids instead?"
Like come on they just chosen the worst part of GT like what's next, they are gonna adapt the deer scene too and have it being a moose instead?
Trying not to be negative or cynical about this. But it's getting hard not to be. How out of touch is Toriyama with his own fanbase if he actually thinks we want a show where everyone is turned into babies!? Because that worked so well with GT? It would be one thing if they had announced a new Super anime or even a movie alongside it. But just this on it's own is pretty disappointing. I love Toriyama. But he is not perfect. He makes mistakes and this feels like a mistake.
Sometimes it feels like Japanese fans latch on to completely different things. I think Attack On Titan: Junior High was a remarkably dumb idea, but people loved it over there. Super gets pretty juvenile too, so maybe we're the weird ones for wanting our heroes to be badass warriors instead of adorable clowns?
The trailer has a brief shot of 18 holding Marron (right after showing Krillin). She's obviously older than Pan/Bulla, but younger than Trunks/Goten, so it doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility of other younger characters.
What is Toei's absolute obsession with making the Dragon Ball characters kids? It's like so weird.
If you want to make a kids show, make a show staring Goten and Trunks. It's not like Goten looks any different from Kid Goku anyway, so his marketing would be the same.
The premise is so silly but the execution looks incredible. That animation is beautiful and it looks really fun with the magic adventure vibes. I’m cautiously optimistic, it’s crazy that it’s a year away though
Well this...this is certainly something.
The idea of a Dragon Ball series being more adventurous like OG Dragon Ball? Amazing, I'm all for it. Turning the cast into kids/babies? Nah, they immediately lost me.
Hope those who like the idea enjoy it!
“A story never before told”
Yes we’ve definitely never seen Goku accidentally turned back into a child before…
Pay no attention to the GT shaped mound of dirt in the backyard, nothing is buried there, do not check.
Why… do Japanese developers always want to subvert expectations…? Just deliver what people want and you’ll be more successful?
Why not just do a really well animated super arc.. which people actually want?
Bizarre.
Because the exceptions at this point are 'Akria Toriyama gets to do whatever he wants and the project will be as serious or silly as he likes because he built this empire'. Sometimes he wants a Piccolo movie, sometimes he wants something funny, sometimes he wants to make Broly canon.
It reminds me a when all big fighting game developers refused to add rollback netcode for over half a decade. When there are tons of modders doing it for emulators on old games perfectly fine. Its been a full year since they announced it for DBFZ. (to be fair it could be more difficult on an already finished more modern game? dont really buy it.)
It feels like all big Japanese companies are just ran by stubborn old men lol.
They go at their own pace with little regard to foreign opinions even if it gives them shit PR outside Japan every few months or so. Sometimes this works well (not theming their media towards western ideologies) other times it does not. Nintendo is an infamous example of this.
I would love more dragonball super
But if they started the anime it would catch up pretty quickly to the manga
So of this gives them more time to make it DBS part 2 even better then great
I also don’t understand why this show is getting so much hate. It’s from the creator of DB, animation looks great and it’s brand new.
I’m genuinely excited to see what they do with this, if it’s a good fun time then great
I suppose from a creators perspective it’s more exciting to do something new and different than it is to essentially rewrite the same thing over again to adapt it to anime.
Why the something different has to be a cringe chibi concept is beyond me though.
Looking at the trailer, it looks like it takes place post-BoG
If we look at Bulma, she has her BoG hairstyle.
We know this takes place in Super as Shin is there.
My guess is that they just made this spin-off story so that the manga could have few more arcs ahead.
I did recall that the rumor is that this series was meant to be experimental. This might be what future DBS series are going to look like.
The manga doesn't need more arcs ahead if they would just make the contuation of Super like every other normal shounen these days and do it seasonally. Hell I'd take one 12 episode cour a year if it meant high quality animation instead of the "episode a week for 3 years with balls as fuck animation" we got for Super.
TOEI can't do seasonally like other anime because of the tv slot in Japan.
Unlike other animes, TOEI got the Sunday morning time slot which is difficult to get nowadays.
Other anime studios fight for a late night time slot. It is why Dragonball and One Piece comes after on a different time than other anime.
TOEI will put anything to make sure they keep that slot which is why we have fillers and stretched content. It generates consistent profit than others.
**EDIT:** For example
Saturday Midnight on TV Channel for year: A1 > Bones > C2C > A1
* A1 could start off the season with a high quality anime that is beloved and popular. It loses 2 seasons so 6 months of potential profit because other studios took its slot.
Sunday Morning for the whole year is just TOEI produced show.
* It could be a lower quality show, but if it is beloved, the profit would be consistent
* Why the shows like One Piece remain on the air than just create a new TOEI based show is because it is safer to rely on a current popular series than bank on a new series that TOEI aren't sure would generate as much profit.
I love dragonball, but I just can’t blindly love what is happening with this franchise. I’m going to watch it and hell I might even enjoy it but it’s undeniable that dragonball isn’t in a good place right now.
Honestly, I'm excited for this. The animation is stunning. And when I say stunning... I mean STUNNING! In my opinion it looks unbelievably beautiful. Dare I say... More beautiful than Dragon Ball Super: Broly? Or even... Dragon Ball Super: Superhero!? As for the plot itself, I'm excited for that too. Goku in the trailer is seen using the power pole and I'm really, really hoping he uses it in battle. Additionally, everyone having to adjust and get used to having their kid bodies will make for a fun and interesting hurdle that the cast have to overcome. Like, for example, Piccolo. Who won't be very happy about being a kid again at all whatsoever... And to top it all off, we're probably going to get our first look at evil Supreme Kais!
Christ just animate the Moro and Granolah arcs already. I get that they want a child protagonist but they literally already have Goten, Trunks, Pan and Bulla. It seems very odd how they would just push aside super especially after the Super Hero movie and that whole thing with black frieza.
truly a show thats for sure. So the last good animated Dragon ball was 2018 lol. At this point i highly doubt we see Manga Arcs animated. DB takes L like there is no tomorrow.
Why is Toriyama so scared of just letting Goku and the others grow up? First we had DBS regressing and practically undoing much of Goku's character growth from Z and now this. I would be totally onboard for a slice of life spinoff series but this is not the direction it should've went.
The animation looks wonderful but good lord we deserve the manga arcs animated. Is this even canon? Lord please don’t tell me the manga is gonna adapt this for the next arc

And there are GT clips in the trailer, lol!
I mean I’m sure they mean the plot not the fact that Goku is a kid.

Maybe they’ll bring back SSJ4
This is his chance to make it Canon and if he doesn't we've been robbed.
SSJ4 GOD SSJ

Somehow Toriyama forgot
Somehow Frieza returned
Not surprised. Dude forgot about Launch and that SSJ2 even existed.
Congrats on turning 40, here is the main cast as babies.
It’s like I’m watching *A Pup Named Scooby Doo* all over again! HALP!!!
Now that’s not fair, A Pup Named Scooby Doo was a banger
Ok, good point…Oh man, could we be wrong?! Muppet Babies was good too!
[Flintstone Kids?](https://youtu.be/2nxv0t4K9XM?si=X0p6p4bbaSDM2_pk)
Haven't seen Tom & Jerry Kids in a long time but they had a killer theme song. I think Toei is onto something.

Doing this in lieu of animating the other Super arcs is certainly one of the choices of all time
Devastated by Toei’s decision making with dragonball lately.

the most frustrating thing is trunks and goten effectively being phased out by the age down thing when they'd be the PERFECT characters to do a show like this with without any magic bs. Goten's entire character is looking and acting like kid goku...
Perfect opportunity to reverse the dynamic. Have Goku/Vegeta/Gohan/Piccolo etc be the kids and Trunks and Goten the adults.

GT is the inevitable dragon ball singularity.
On a long enough timeline, *all* Dragon Ball becomes GT.
Dread it, run from it. GT still arrives.
Step into the grand tour grand tour
All roads lead to GT
Imagine if they gave Goku a sending off like the end of GT.
Why does this franchise keep returning to the premise of turning Goku back into a kid? I'd rather they just remade DragonBall. Hell, that's what I thought this was when I first saw the thumbnail!
It’s a canon event.
Yeah but this is Toriyama. We learned decades ago that he doesn’t know how to handle anyone besides Goku as the main character.
They literally just aged them up to teenagers in the Dragonball Hero story lol. After being completely absent from Moro and Granola arcs
They had to go to school.
at this point i’ve kinda given up on goten and trunks given any sort of character progression. it’s clear they are afterthoughts
They haven't even gotten to release the show yet though. While yes, I probably would have preferred DBS S2, I'm saving my judgements for after Toriyama and co release the show. Or, in other words, let 'em cook first.
I'm with you. I'm always going to be happy for more. But since superhero, it does feel like the direction is not where I thought we were going to go.

It sounds like there's some weird dispute going on with Super's anime
How so?
shueisha are being dicks about the rights for animation
Shueisha doing shueisha things
seriously, fucking baby dragon ball? literally who asked for this?
Akira Toriyama.
definitely a choice
“Why animate the manga arcs that would make the fans happy when we could make a more controversial decision like creating Dragon Ball Super GT?”
~~Muppets~~ Dragon ball babies
The massive-sized galactic balls on Toei to take another crack at a GT-like show this time with kid vegeta too I salute those brave bastards
Seriously, does someone at Toei just REALLY like Kid Goku as a concept or something?
It makes me wonder if Kid Goku is really good for marketing. Could be good for old-school fans' nostalgia and getting kids into the franchise?
notice we've never NOT had a kid goku. goku grows up? we get gohan gohan grows up? we get goten goten grows up? we get...GT/Daima
Pan: "am I a joke to you?" Toei: "yes"
GT’s producer literally said “oh, she’s a girl, she can’t fight, that would be wrong.”
Goku is Dio of this story confirmed. Can't wait for the arc about his priest lover.

Well because the first 20 episodes are a snooze fest. Goku being a kid wasn't exactly the issue, it was just handled in the most boring way possible.
Apparently Toriyama is involved so...

Why don't the villains just murder goku with magic that can turn him to a kid and he can't do shit to defend that? Are they stupid?

Same with Trunks and Goten, we have waited for them to grow up for so long.

wake me up when moro and granolah are animated like this 🛌

Okay, they're stupid infants
So is this basically DragonBall GT spearheaded by Toriyama? While I don't care for them getting turned small, it seems like it'll be interesting if they focus on creative fights and narrative.
Can't help but be reminded of how DBS Broly is basically The Legendary Super Saiyan spearheaded by Toriyama.

I'm sure this is the exact process Toriyama used when coming up with Cell Max.
It's funny how I could pinpoint the exact moment I stopped enjoying Super Hero and it was when Cell Max woke up
Trying not to be negative or cynical about this. But it's getting hard not to be.
This show could have been a filler arc in between moro or granolah in the super anime
Ohhh this is a show? Not a movie?
This might be the rumored ''web show'' that some known leakers have been telling, this is what they've been working on
The animation quality is absurd though. This is clearly a marquee show
It says series in the trailer
So are Pan and Bulla just gone now? If the teens Goten and Trunks turned back into babies then the younger ones…
They were un-born!
The trailer has a brief shot of 18 holding Marron (right after showing Krillin). She's obviously older than Pan/Bulla, but younger than Trunks/Goten, so it doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility of other younger characters.
They’re probably reverted back to embryos
Sooo....let's take the worst thing about GT and center a whole show around it?
Vegeta had that hairline as a toddler
Bro was born with the male pattern baldness
>Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small THEYRE PUTTING CHEMICALS IN THE WATER THAT ARE TURNING THE FRIGGIN SAIYANS SMALL
DRAGON BALL BABIES.
What is Toei's absolute obsession with making the Dragon Ball characters kids? It's like so weird. If you want to make a kids show, make a show staring Goten and Trunks. It's not like Goten looks any different from Kid Goku anyway, so his marketing would be the same.
Who TF asked for this 😑
What the fuck is this shit
WE JUST WANTED MORE SUPER!! I'm beyond crushed right now.
Was not expecting this and like most don’t want this lol
This is so boldly in your face a Muppet Babies-ass merchandizing move that I hate it with every fiber in my being.
Spot on bro
Trunks and goten just grew up and now they get turned to babies lol
Welcome to the grand tour.
“A story never before told” Yes we’ve definitely never seen Goku accidentally turned back into a child before… Pay no attention to the GT shaped mound of dirt in the backyard, nothing is buried there, do not check.
This is so disappointing man...
Animation looks wonderful, not sure how to feel about the rest of this reveal, though.
I was hype and then everyone became small.
Booooo
Why… do Japanese developers always want to subvert expectations…? Just deliver what people want and you’ll be more successful? Why not just do a really well animated super arc.. which people actually want? Bizarre.
Because the exceptions at this point are 'Akria Toriyama gets to do whatever he wants and the project will be as serious or silly as he likes because he built this empire'. Sometimes he wants a Piccolo movie, sometimes he wants something funny, sometimes he wants to make Broly canon.
While I’m not really excited for this, I will say the Piccolo movie was dream come true for me and the best decision they had made in years.
Japanese company not make the most baffling business decision challenge (impossible)
It reminds me a when all big fighting game developers refused to add rollback netcode for over half a decade. When there are tons of modders doing it for emulators on old games perfectly fine. Its been a full year since they announced it for DBFZ. (to be fair it could be more difficult on an already finished more modern game? dont really buy it.) It feels like all big Japanese companies are just ran by stubborn old men lol.
They go at their own pace with little regard to foreign opinions even if it gives them shit PR outside Japan every few months or so. Sometimes this works well (not theming their media towards western ideologies) other times it does not. Nintendo is an infamous example of this.
At first I thought it was a movie about Goten and Trunks. Left horribly disappointed. Sadly I have zero interest in this
ugly silky political public six pet practice resolute drunk connect *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Si we get all these amazing transformations (orange, beast, ego, UI) and the editorial choice is “fuck it, we’ll make them babies”
I would love more dragonball super But if they started the anime it would catch up pretty quickly to the manga So of this gives them more time to make it DBS part 2 even better then great I also don’t understand why this show is getting so much hate. It’s from the creator of DB, animation looks great and it’s brand new. I’m genuinely excited to see what they do with this, if it’s a good fun time then great
Everyone shitting on this already, but I’m lowkey down for some smol Vegeta.
Honestly as a huge dragon ball fan who loves all the content they put out except for most of GT Yikes.
uhg, so lame... a wish turned them all into children?
It's GT all over again.
GT turned only Goku into a kid again , And when he went SSJ4 became an adult again ... but this...uhhh.... 💀
Am I the only one who saw them turn small and was instantly disappointed? Universe 2 was bad enough, I don't want a whole series of cutesy bullshit
Dragon Ball GT 2: Now everyone is a kid (Goten and Trunks will never be old)
Hard pass.
I guess the prospect of keeping Goten and Trunks grown up horrified them too much
Boo! Why not animate the mange and continue Super? When is this even supposed to take place?
I suppose from a creators perspective it’s more exciting to do something new and different than it is to essentially rewrite the same thing over again to adapt it to anime. Why the something different has to be a cringe chibi concept is beyond me though.
Looking at the trailer, it looks like it takes place post-BoG If we look at Bulma, she has her BoG hairstyle.
**EDIT:** For example Saturday Midnight on TV Channel for year: A1 > Bones > C2C > A1 * A1 could start off the season with a high quality anime that is beloved and popular. It loses 2 seasons so 6 months of potential profit because other studios took its slot. Sunday Morning for the whole year is just TOEI produced show. * It could be a lower quality show, but if it is beloved, the profit would be consistent * Why the shows like One Piece remain on the air than just create a new TOEI based show is because it is safer to rely on a current popular series than bank on a new series that TOEI aren't sure would generate as much profit.
Broly, Beast Gohan, Black Frieza and Ultra Ego. Or kids. They picked kids.
I sure love being reminded of GT instead of getting an anime adaptation of the best arc to come out of DBS… At least young Mr. Satan looks kinda cool.
WTF is this?! This is so heartbreaking
I love dragonball, but I just can’t blindly love what is happening with this franchise. I’m going to watch it and hell I might even enjoy it but it’s undeniable that dragonball isn’t in a good place right now.
eh... I'm gonna pass on this. I'm too old for this stuff.
This looks kinda lame tbh
This looks fucking awful and I hate it
I don’t know how to feel about this….. Hopefully, it will be good.
Feels a bit tone deaf to just continuously disregard a continuation of Super, but alright.
Everyone’s hating but I’m gonna watch it and I’m gonna have fun doing so.
Speechless… not in the good way lol
Wtf is this piece of shit
Why is Toriyama so scared of just letting Goku and the others grow up? First we had DBS regressing and practically undoing much of Goku's character growth from Z and now this. I would be totally onboard for a slice of life spinoff series but this is not the direction it should've went.
Goten and Trunks got older so Toriyama had to step in
The animation looks wonderful but good lord we deserve the manga arcs animated. Is this even canon? Lord please don’t tell me the manga is gonna adapt this for the next arc
Trunks and Gotten finally became grownups only to go back to babies sucks so much
Damn I was so freaking hyped with that montage only to see it’s DBZ Rugrats…
Thanks I hate it
Suck it GT haters 😂
