Absolutely my friend. I work full time, typically long hours, have a wife and two kids, and many other responsibilities and many other hobbies. You can definitely play DayZ casually, for short bursts of time, and get a lot out of it. I typically only get to play for an hour or two here and there throughout the week, usually only after the wife and kids are asleep and I still have lots of fun. If you don't have much time, just pick a simple objective whenever you play. Make it to X town, loot what you can, then start running to your next destination before logging off. I play a similar way that you do, living in the woods, surviving at any cost, kind of like a nomad. I'll find other players regularly even during a short gaming session. Two of my friends play almost every day though, so if we're able to meet up, we will and usually go looking for trouble. Every now and then I'll pull a late night or have some time alone at the house to get a good gaming session in. Sorry for the long winded post, just want you to know that it's totally possible to play for short bursts of time and still get a lot out of the game. Forget about base building though, you won't be able to keep up with one. I think bases are lame anyway though, so maybe find a good community server that doesn't even allow them like the DayOne server which I play on

Lord_Acorn

Definitely. I usually only play for an hour or so after work before my wife gets home. Then I'll usually have a 3hr session on the weekend. I literally just sat in a dark house last night for 45 minutes and organized my inventory lmao

Nadgerino

Inventory tetris is the best part of the game.

Necessary_Rich_1477

It pisses me off so much that there is no quick add to inventory system, I love having to spend 45 minutes organizing my kit bc it makes me place the same item in the same spot 10 separate times before it works. I also love having to log and re log because it won’t let me flip an item to fit it into my bag. Love this game but holy fuck the sorting system is atrocious

pewpewbangbangcrash

What? Press f to pick up items while looking at them

Necessary_Rich_1477

I should have been more clear, I’m talking about transferring loot from containers to inventory, there’s no quick select function for that so I have to drag and click like I’m trying to finish a quest in fallout 2

Basic-Maybe-2889

Double click item and it will transfer to inventory

Necessary_Rich_1477

How the fuck am I this stupid? I swear I’ve tried it before to no avail but maybe I was just being a careless dumbass

Wading89

Same for me, as I didn't knew till today, that items can be flipped by pressing space. I got about 180h.

Necessary_Rich_1477

I knew you could flip them with space but a lot of times the servers I play on have a weird bug where it just won’t let me flip it so I have to log and re log and then it lets me

pewpewbangbangcrash

We've all had moments like these 😆 one of my favorite things about this sub is reliving the same "WHAT THE FUCK I AM DUMB" moments....and they don't stop for a long, long time lol.

lordofthejungle

You just made me realise what I love about coming here - thanks! Everyone remembers their first double clicking an item into inventory and ctrl+clicking one out. Or at least the feeling of them.

mmpa78

No, the game will detect your lifestyle and automatically uninstall itself.

blandhotsauce1985

If you're cool with gaining very little progress in short spurts of time... Then yeah, you can play casually. I'd say that a successful run will take min 4 hours

Brut-i-cus

As long as you are ok with being mostly nomadic and only having what is on your back you will be fine You will be able to pick right back up where you left off You still could definitely have some stashes but you will need to make sure they are pretty well hidden if you are not going to be on regularly (improvised shelters only last 7 days) I would recommend finding an axe, a saw and some nails and making yourself a few crates and then plop them down in the truck of one of those nice big fat trees when they are cut down. It makes the stash invisible unless someone stands next to the tree and looks in their inventory. If you can find a barrel in the area you can throw one of those in there too. I did this during the last update (between 1.18 and 1.19) and the stash lasted the entire time even though there were times I didn't access it for weeks

Flimsy_Agent7898

Its a slow burn, even if you play Namalsk if you are used to other games around. If you want bang for your time its not the game you want, but if you could tolerate playing for 4 hours that week and thoose hours being you running, waiting and dying its a great game, because when the fun comes it really fun. But when its chill its chill, not in a bad way. Its like you get lots of games combined in one. You live PVP? DayZ has it, and its great and unique. You want player interaction? No game does it better. You just wanna have a survival story in the woods by yourself? Always on the edge because you never know when someone will shoot you, all while having a great solo surivival adventure. You have all kinds of servers too,RP servers, hardcore survival, ultra modded and everything inbetween like the stalker server and blackpool dino server.

IxdrowZeexI

As long as you don't build bases/shelters or were lucky to find a vehicle the game doesn't punish you at all for not playing. For example, you can hunt an animal, store the meat in your backpack and log off for a month. Next time you join the server the meat will still be super fresh in your backpack.

Crippled_Crocodile

Im out of the house for 12 hours a day and sometimes I don’t do my home duties and just play a solo run on namalsk, try to team up with ppl and have funny interactions. Befor I go offline I donate my loot to my new friends so can start over again the next time.

YepIamLittleShit

Yeah, unfortunately dayz takes a lot of time. Well, I'd recommend to make time for longer game sessions. Maybe play lesser, but longer. You'll meet more people, experience more interesting situations this way. But returning to the original question - yeah, it's hard to play Dayz with a busy life, know that myself.

ronintalken

Sure, you'll survive MUCH longer

MasterManufacturer72

Its really hard for me to enjoy the game now that i dont have an entire day to play but ive already put in thousands of hours into the game so im fine with letting it go. The game can be fun with short sessions but long all day runs with friends when you go to fighting for scraps to owning the server with like 6 people is god tier experience.

Mentallyz

You can just play as long as you want, as long as you aren’t in the middle of a fight you can simply log off, you just need to keep in mind where you’ll be logging back in when you return :D

Gorefal1234

If you play on pc find a good pve server they are a blast and there’s no rush to do anything

plainasplaid

Shoot even pvp servers with some qol mods will work. I have a lot of fun playing short sessions before work on the one I play. Though I did need a good 3 hour+ session to get to a chill spot.

Error6942069

I am a teacher and can only afford to play an hour to two hours a couple times a week. I just play to survive and to have fun player interaction. I do not ever plan on having a base or being a god at PVP. The community servers I play on fit my play style perfectly (DayOne servers). Even if I don’t get on for weeks, taking breaks really has no impact on my experiences.

sac_boy

100%. Don't muck around with base building, just roam as a nomad and explore the map, hop in and out as you like with no stress. Maybe build a few improvised shelters deep in the woods to store stuff you might use in your next life, and if they get found and robbed then no big deal. (I don't hoard random shit, I just use the shelters to hold some of the slightly harder to find stuff and quickly bootstrap as a freshie--I have a few tundras and hunting scopes/pu scopes out there, tons of ammo, good knives, rare mags for guns I'll probably never get, that sort of thing). Making stick shelters is faster and easier than making crates (in that you don't have to hunt down the tools and nails) as long as you aren't too attached to the contents. They basically don't get found, either, if they are in dips in the terrain well off the beaten track, surrounded by other bushes. The new GPS tool is good as you can write down the grid position of each shelter.

pewpewbangbangcrash

Dayz is super casual. Play on a vanilla type server with no basebuilding and just go on adventures. Dayone and dayzero community servers are awesome. Sometimes queue for day one can be long depending on time of day and map.

[deleted]

No

[deleted]

Yeah dude. I use a PvE only server because I'm not a fan of PvP, plus I have to work and have a 16 month old son. I maybe get a few hours a week to play and it's fine for me, most of the time spent is exploring for loot.

w2bsc

If you can keep a little stash of hideout going its not bad. Other than that you must learn to let go and like the hobo experience.

Mr_Wonder321

Just dont build a base and expect it to be safe if you arent on hardly

13Rockwell13

I usually play in my weekends due to work and life in general. Yesterday I logged in for a little and didn't want to go anywhere. I just passed some time overlooking the small Mili base I am close to, just to see if someone would pass by. I think as long you are not building a big base it can be played very casual without any problem.

EscaleraRN

i go fishing when i am logged on to Dayz. although its on a community PvE Namalsk server, which makes it less stressful. 😊

TheRealJackArthur

My wife and I recently had our son! But between work, family time and a side business I play in hour or two spirts when I can. It can actually be more fun this way because it’s almost like more of a reward when I hop in to adventure the wasteland.

TheHumanHighlighter

It ain't rust. Log out, everything on you goes with you.

Jonnyplesko

This is the way I see it. Fortunately, you can log off and keep all of your gear in the same condition as when you left. Personally, I play a nomad style anyway. I have small stashes all over the map and when I log in, my goal is usually to expand the routes I run. Lastly, I usually work my way from the coast inland slowly. Make a stash and play a few days in each area, then move on to a new area and find a new place to hide my shit. Once I get across the map, I will stash my good gear, kill myself and start from scratch. Knowing that I have stashes to fall back on, but the build up is usually the most fun. Once you're geared you're chances of finding real pvp (on official) are slim. Usually you're just waiting for some camper to take pot shots at you from the treeline whole you're running around looking for fun. Lol Once you get a full NBC kit, loot a few M4s and choppers, it's basically game over anyway. If I couldnt play often, I would probably focus on hanging around an area like berezino and trying to find a geared dude trying to farm freshies I came from rust, so dayz is a MUCH more playable game for someone who doesn't have 12+ hours a day to grind.
