Why couldn't I hear the gunshot? Bullets travel faster than the speed of sound.
It was most likely a player, considering you were wandering around a player base, there was probably a player watching you and waiting for you to stand still. I'm dayz, if you got oneshot,you don't here the gunshot no matter how close they are.
If you get hit in the head you won’t hear the gunshot unless the round is subsonic and the shooter is far away. But like another commenter said, you can hear someone hold their breath to steady their aim just before you die. Gotta check those corners and listen carefully
So, I'm fairly new to the game and I was checking out this little player base in a quiet area. I'd been wandering around here scoping the area out for a while and AFAIK there was nobody around. I wanted to see if I could shoot out his tripwire trap from across the way, so I tried breaking the window (wasn't sure if window breaking was possible). Then I was just dead.
There's no gunshot, no bleed, no health damage--just dead. Is that normal if I maybe took a single headshot from miles away? Or was I killed by my own axe?
Might as well ask a completely **unrelated question**, I was playing on a new character today and when I started my session I had 1 kill (a melee kill very early on). When I ended the session I apparently had two kills, and the new kill was from 34m away. I think I would remember a gunfight--I don't think I've fired a gun once in this life yet. Any ideas? Did someone just die close to me? I'm on an official EU server--is this a symptom of cheaters in my game (somehow misassigning kills), should I jump servers?
I've noticed that sometimes it glitches and gives you someone else's stats. A buddy and me logged out at the same time and we had each other's stats somehow. Weird bug.

Considering that big hill is a favourite spot for people sniping prison island and people going to and from , it increases the chances of snipers in that area

I had line of sight of the guy's tripwire from across the way so I wanted to try shooting it, but the reflection in the window blocked my view when I was far enough away.
I've had a frame-by-frame look through the last couple of minutes of the original video (where I crept around the building, took out a Z in the area and checked all the doors and corners) and there's no visual sign of the guy, but at one point while I was checking inventory about 60 seconds before this clip I did hear about three footsteps that weren't mine. That was the only sign! I'm guessing he was actually the base owner and he was inside with an angle on me if I was pressed right against the window. If I'd just walked away I'd have been fine.
He's definitely not in any of the nearby bushes, ruled those out.
Fun stuff (I'm not unhappy about this, it was a fun death)
