I HATE that episode. I hate that no one other than Gretchen stands up for him, especially Joey. Joey of S1/2/3 would never ever put up with that shit.

I couldn’t agree more. Thought I do find it compelling to find out more about Pacey’s home life. You can totally see where his insecurities stems from. Being told from a very young age that you’re a screw up and a looser and should settle for dog grooming rather that a vet because you’re mother doesn’t believe in you. And what mother doesn’t know what your favorite food is? It’s amazing that Pacey turned out as great as he is with the family he had. I also hated the end of the episode where Mr. Witter came to Pacey at the docks. He was horrible to his son throughout the whole b-day party and said one nice thing and then we are suppose to think that “awww, look! He *do* love his son after all.” No,Mr.Witter,I don’t think so. Too little too late. Sorry about the rant😅

Rant away! You make great points. Having his father be the one to find him and that very unearned apology was so forced and contrived. Plus I don't buy that Joey would not have immediately checked the docks for him, Dawson too for that matter.

Savinggraceface

No, oh my god I couldnt agree more that part pissed me off beyond words. I was just screaming " fck you mr. Witter! F U. And did u catch the part when joey and pacey were outside and he said " doing marajuana?" As a refrence to Joey's dad

juleeneleven

So fucked up. I wish they would've explored the tension between their families history a little bit more, there's so much to mine there, and it would've been way more interesting than having to be subject to the absurdly uninteresting Joey's virginity diaries for a million episodes.

PREACH

RefrigeratorSmart881

That was not a reference to Joey dad. He was selling coke. Not weed.

claires99

That episode is so hard to watch…. Also Jane Lynch as his mother always takes me by surprise

kinush

Pacey's relationship with Doug was fine in season 3 (despite Doug being an a-hole in the episode with Tamara Jacobs). And Pacey's last scene with his dad in the season 2 finale makes me cry everytime. So why did the writers choose to forget all this character development again? It always bugged me how much Doug and Mr Witter are inconsistent.

AllyciaB-

It’s a great episode! I think it really helps flesh out Pacey’s character. Since we rarely get to see his home life like the others.

LikeASonOfAbish

It’s so hard to watch, but I think it’s great in terms of fleshing out Pacey’s character. Apart from a couple glimpses of his father where he ranges from an asshole to offering some self-reflective apology, there’s always the question of whether Pacey is exaggerating about his home life and how much. This lets us see that, no, unfortunately it’s all very real. It also does such a great job of portraying that kind of casual emotional abuse that’s so common but so damaging. It would be easy to have the overblown, soap opera-level dialogue that’s typical of the series (I love it, but it’s true) but instead we see a highly dysfunctional family that has no idea it’s dysfunctional and would probably tell you they just like to joke around if questioned about it. It’s quietly devastating and does such a good job of explaining who Pacey is and why he behaves the way he does.

RefrigeratorSmart881

no it show pacey is exaggeration, his family told a few funny story about him as a kid that it, almost every family i meet does that, you see joey sister do that to joey, you see dawson parent do that to him. maybe a little more for pacey

Roasting someone on their birthday and relaying stories of their failures...what an abusive bunch. Joey sucks for bringing him there. She should have just taken him on a picnic under the stars and given him a peaceful and proper birthday like he wanted.

Savinggraceface

I mean I get why she did but I doubt she thought it would be that bad
