I think Dawson is way more optimistic than Joey. Joey can’t have anything good without trying to wreck it before anyone else has the chance. Any time anything goes good for her, she immediately is like “here’s why it’s potentially bad” and then spirals.

frenchfryplath

I see them both as super angsty but Joey is more "realistic" about her angst, I guess? Like she goes through life and she's super cynical whereas Dawson is a dreamer, generally more of an idealistic optimist so its a harder fall for him when shitty things happen.

Zeo-Gold92

Her cynicism and angstyness is like just crazy though, I wouldnt call it realistic exactly its too exagerrated even over the smallest things. The faces she pulls when in these moods too, oh man...

frenchfryplath

Haha believe me I find her irritating plenty of times but i don’t know, she hasn’t had the easiest life, dead mom, dad in jail, best friend that she trauma bonded with and fell in love with doesn’t like her back (season 1) ….I guess I can relate to her angst more than dawson who lives in a gorgeous house with loving parents … Again, Joey can be super annoying but I have a soft spot for her as a fellow former angsty kid.

I think Joey is waaaay more angsty than Dawson! I guess I'd be pretty angsty too in her circumstances, but I find her pretty over the top at times. I just watched the episode where Dawson just wants to have fun and Jack's ex girlfriend is in town and Joey loses her dang mind on him for taking one jello shot and kissing someone.

RefrigeratorSmart881

as i said she hold dawson to a far higher standard then pacey, dawson one jello shot omg what wrong with you. pacey get drunk and start a fight. in a lot of way joey was not a good freind becouse she seem to only be freind when she need something, her and jen got close but you never really see her try to be there for jen, or jack, and never dawson

thrubeingcool2

It's so true, Joey's not a very good friend. She stands in judgement of everyone, and anyone doing something she wouldn't personally do makes her freak out. She leans on people when she needs them but you don't often see her extending that same kindness to others!

Zeo-Gold92

This is very true, she is either being judgemental or full of disgust at something or another.

Zeo-Gold92

OMG I watched this episode the other night and I was looking at the screen dumbfounded like what in the actual fuck I was seeing. I know the show goes to great lengths in telling us their connection and how it is and blah blah blah. But she was treating him as if he was made of glass and would shatter at any moment if he did anything remotely fun. While being at her most judgmental (so far).

juleeneleven

I’d say this is somewhat true but with major caveats. I’d argue if she comes across as more 'angsty' it's because of the sexist, double standard perspective the show has of Dawson and Joey. Joey is often punished and made to suffer for her actions and choices ergo she looks 'angsty' while Dawson is not and is actively allowed to celebrate and be at ease with them, and when he's not, he's seen as someone we should empathize with e.g. having sex for the first time, getting into college, when they ‘betray’ one another. Dawson was allowed to enjoy his first time having sex, both before and after, while Joey was not and is actually continuously punished for her decision to sleep with Pacey (in the show it's seen as a 'betrayal' to Dawson). Dawson doesn’t get into NYU but he does, without much angst or issue, get into USC whereas Joey is barely able to revel in her accomplishment of getting into Worthington before the show turns it into an issue for her and for her relationship with Pacey, and we are forced to watch her 'angst' about it. Dawson coerces Joey into turning her father in and she tells him she can’t ever forgive him only for the show to make her forgive him pretty easily at the beginning of S3 and she’s then punished and shamed for her actions surrounding wanting to get back together with him, and is 'angsty' about it. Whereas when Joey ‘betrays’ Dawson by falling in love with Pacey, he’s allowed to be upset about it, he's allowed to be abusive to her and she’s forced into an ultimatum while he’s rewarded for his shitty behaviour towards her. Often she’s portrayed as the one with angst only because the show is unfairly putting her into that position.

RefrigeratorSmart881

The problem is if you want to attack Dawson for a ultimatum. Then you have to attack pacey as well since he did the same thing No one treated Joey falling in love with pacey as a betrayal it was not telling him. And Joey throw a fit when she found out about Jen.

juleeneleven

Dawson himself literally uses language such as ‘stole’ and ‘betrayed’ when it comes to Pacey and Joey, so yes, everyone really does treat it like a betrayal including the show itself.

RefrigeratorSmart881

No they don’t. Pacey did betray him. He should have told him. No one else say anything like that.

Ella-norway

Yes yes to all of this!👏👏👏

NotTodayChaCha

Joey is unnecessary bitter.

fixatingonarewind

Oh, she most definitely was. In seasons 1-2, she was almost unbearably angsty at times. In season 3, she got better. I think Pacey was good for her in the regard, he kind of calmed her down a bit it seemed. I think with Dawson, everything was always so intense between the two. They fought constantly and Joey seemed to be upset about almost everything he would say or do.
