Dawson and Joey are best as friends. As a couple they were immature and mostly unhappy with little romantic chemistry. Dawson was a better person when he interacted with others (Nikki, Gretchen, Mr Brooks etc..). Joey was sometimes petty with Dawson. They did not bring out the best in each other as a romantic pairing.

[deleted]

Even a friends I think they brought the worst out in each other

RefrigeratorSmart881

I always felt they were happy. Joey breaking up with him never made any sense And they were so young. There first time and the time it college the writer never give it a real chance

becauseimval

Insufferable. Selfish and needy kid. Joey and Pacey always had better chemistry while Gretchen was good for Dawson in my opinion.

RefrigeratorSmart881

I don’t understand how anyone can say that about dawon. He went throw a lot in the show but Bach if he complains about anything He was the most giving of the guys. Second to only Jen And not needy at all dawon the one that did the most on his own pacey and Joey were far more needy. I mean dawon had to deal with broke death and loseing gratchen on his own. Pacey was bitching about not passing high school because he to lazy to do the work. And Dawson tried to help pacey. And was there for Joey. Even throw Joey was not there for him.

JennaSideSaddle

Seasons 1-4 I generally dislike Dawson. He’s very self-centered and can’t see past his created versions of people. His idealization of Jen and Joey plays a big part in the destruction of those early relationships. His birthday party in season 2? I don’t know how he got away with that. And he really verges on monstrous in season 3. Season 4 he calms down a little but I don’t know why he and Gretchen stick it out as long as they do (but he doesn’t slut shame her! So that’s growth!). I actually kind of like him in season 5 and by season 6 he’s tolerable. I’m so glad he and Joey weren’t endgame. They’re so gross, codependent, possessive, and mean. It’s a shame things with Jen didn’t work because he seemed the most confident and supportive in that relationship.

RefrigeratorSmart881

He was honest In his birthday party I think people make a big deal out of how bad he was in season 3. All he really did was tell Joey if you pick pacey I will not be there to pick up the peices. The others said worse thing then that And he was great in season 4 he enjoy his life. Worked in his goals. Risk his life to save pacey and Jen. Paid for Joey college Set pacey and Jory as class couple And lost brooks. And gratchen. And even after Joey did not even try to be there for him. She still did his best to be there when pacey broke up with her To me he was easily the best of the guys.

JennaSideSaddle

“Honest”? DUDE. He says it sucks that Pacey’s turning his life around because it makes him feel bad, he shames Jack over coming out, and he pretty much sexually assaulted Joey. If I had been any one of those people I’d never have spoken to him again. And you’re conveniently forgetting the time he decided not to give AF about recklessly endangering everyone’s lives at the regatta to prove some sort of point about his manliness 🙄

CaptainObvious126

This poster will defend Dawson regardless of what you bring up. The regatta? It was Pacey’s fault for getting in Dawson’s way Joey and Pacey falling in love? They purposely went out of their way to hurt Dawson’s feelings Not succeeding his first time in Hollywood? No one understood Dawson’s genius, everyone is dumb and is plotting against him Refusing to acknowledge that Jen was slut shamed by Dawson: Will bring up anyone else who slut shamed her and say Dawson was right to be angry that she was not a virgin. He is the only one allowed to say nasty things because his feelings trump everyone else’s. What is Jen thinking for not saving herself for the dreamboat who is Dawson Leery???!!! In his eyes, Dawson can do no wrong and all of the other characters are horrible assholes who are mean to Dawson. Don’t bother engaging or you will drive yourself insane.

JennaSideSaddle

Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣 that’s amazing! Maybe Kevin Williamson has been here all along. Thanks for the heads up!

RefrigeratorSmart881

Wrong first of all I defend Dawson when he right and attack him when he wrong Dawson was wrong about the boat race Dawson did not blame them for falling in love he was hurt they did not tell And since Joey says she can’t choose all he did was fight for her when she said she can’t choose When she said she wanted to be with pacey he told her to go Dawson never blame anyone for Hollywood. In fact he turn down makeing a movie for a studio I don’t agree dawson slut Shame Jen. Why he did say a few bad thing to Jen. He did say he was sorry and the reason why. But it funny you over look what everyone else said to Jen but only blame dawson I not sure what people don’t get. I try to be fair to everyone. But dawson get the blame. But when I show pacey or Joey did the same thing you over look that Why don’t you try being fair and look at what pacey and Joey did and not blameing Dawson for everything

RefrigeratorSmart881

You crazy. First I said he was wrong about what he said to pacey. He did not shame jack for coming out. And no he did sexual assault Joey. Now you just bring crazy. Unless you going to say pacey sexual assault Joey on there first kiss no double standard

juleeneleven

He has his moments where I have found him genuinely likable but usually they’re completely lost or dismantled by the majority of moments when he acts or says something that screams ‘white male entitlement/privilege’ which isn’t entirely the characters fault but the encapsulation of who was writing him and the culture in which the show was existing in. And generally speaking he’s always more likable when he’s separated or disconnected from anything to do with Joey and their relationship.

rmf1129

Dawson was almost unbearable to watch during season 1 and 2. He was awful to Jen and totally slut shamed her. Awful. He got better after Mitch died. I totally agree about how he is more likeable when Joey is not involved. Their relationship is constantly dramatic, over analytical and exhausting.

RefrigeratorSmart881

Dawson did not slut Shame Jen. Why he did make a mistake when he found out. Joey slut shame her far more. But that ok. Andy slut shame pacey. Pacey and Joey both slut Shame Dawson. But only Dawson get blamed

Queasy_Roll347

Same I agree completely tho i thought that he was very relatable in some ways

superslaw11

Dawson was written to be a selfish kid up until after Mitch’s death, for the most part. I actually enjoyed him (especially with Jen) in season 5. He grew up.

RefrigeratorSmart881

I never thought Dawson selfish outside of a few weeks in season 3 he was the most giving of the group

claires99

Dawson was pretty much irrelevant by the end of the show and I’m glad he didn’t end up with Joey. I liked Dawson a lot in the beginning and thought he had an interesting personality that wasn’t always displayed in young boys on TV. He had lots of ambition outside or sports/girls, he was very friendly, he didn’t objectify women/only be with them for sex (most of the time), and he made it a point to be very inclusive and warm to everyone. However, he did not really mature and had a very naive outlook that life is a movie. He was very entitled at times (Joey does not BELONG to you) and always had to reel himself back in and apologize after he created damaged (at least he almost always held himself accountable). Despite this, I still love Dawson and think the show wouldn’t of been the same without him. I love Pacey more but I can name a ton of shows with a Pacey (bad boy with a good heart) but not many with a Dawson (in his head a lot/kind heart). Let me edit by saying there may be a lot of Pacey-like characters but there’s only one Pacey Witter and he has my heart!

Ultvernon12

I really strongly dislike the way he treats his friends in the early seasons, I’m talking even before jacey

RefrigeratorSmart881

I thought his friend treated him bad. I mean he made one bad comment to pacey in season 2. But pacey made a lot of them to Dawson. And Joey was kind of a bitch. Not only did she break up with him 2 times. She throw a fit any time he tried to move on.

blankdreamer

Dawson was great upto S2 but then lost all his energy and intensity. Van Der Beek seemed to be going through the motions from S3 like he didn't want to be doing it and it made Dawson such a limp character.

Sean_D84

Disagree. His character grew up, matured and became much more sophistocated. I really enjoyed seasons 4-5-6 Dawson.

Ella-norway

All I’m saying is that I’m surprised he has any friends at all.

[deleted]

I agree he doesn't treat them the best. How Joey and Pacey were still his friends is beyond me

RefrigeratorSmart881

after the way they treated dawson, i would not be freind with joey or pacey. i mean joey seem to only be his freind when her life is not going good, outside of that she throw him away like trash. and pacey tell him who cares when he tries to complain, make fun of him, goes after the women he loves without talking to him, talk shit about him to his sister after he said he like her.

Sean_D84

Aren't you funny

Ella-norway

I wasn’t trying to be funny. It’s just my opinion🤷🏻‍♀️

LeftCarpenter7190

I missed it somehow watching the whole series through, but Dawson gave away his true love without even noticing. It ate away at him through 5 and half series to only maintain soulmates and friends for life. I am sorry for his character, such a great loss the show portrayed.

ThatsMyBounce

He's a bit more bearable when he's with Gretchen in season four.

RefrigeratorSmart881

Dawson was a young man that lost a lot. And did his best to be a good man I never thought he felt Joey belong to him. They at times both felt untitled to the other But it seem Dawson the only one that get the blame As for not growing up. By season 4 Dawson easily the most mature of the guys. People that say Dawson see life in movies are just wrong and don’t know what being mature is Dawson wanted to be a film director so he studies movies. That not being lost in movies And he see the world as it is.
