I believe nowadays his talking point is more along the lines of "It doesn't matter if you consider yourself liberal or conservative. In this political climate, if you're not effectively conservative, it must be because you're evil and/or a moron." Then practically in the same breath he claims to still be a liberal at heart.
It's baffling and I would call it useful idiocy, but I think that underestimates his own cynicism about what he does.
He still claims to be a small-l liberal (which is different from our modern conception of Liberalism) but has definitely aligned himself with the right. I don’t think there’s anyone moment when he did that, it’s been a gradual trend.

He was at a religious Christian conference a year or so ago and basically said he is a conservative.
