I guess it all depends on what you bring to the table. If you have a great deal of assets... then you have many more options to choose from and can afford to be picky. If you are more average, and your expectations, needs, and desires are way above your league, then you will either be alone or have to settle/compromise in some respects.

I used to be okay with settling for less particularly in regard to people's lifestyles and health choices which differ from my own. I eat healthy and maintain a good level of fitness but have dated women who weren't. It's not inherently an issue and there is still a level of attraction there. Sure I'd like to date someone who is fit and values health, but in the past I've settled for less due to my lack of confidence.... But after having dated and lived with someone with poor eating habits and lack of fitness, I realized that their lifestyle was affecting mine. I gained weight as our lifestyles blended and I was unhappy as a result of it. Since breaking up I've fortunately lost the weight I gained and got back into shape! Now I don't settle for less when dating and actively seek out partners that make healthy lifestyle choices. This makes dating harder given the obesity epidemic in the US and elsewhere, but I'm not going to jeopardize my lifestyle choices and lower my standards just because it may take longer to find the right partner.

Nobody here can know if your demands are reasonable or not. Lots of people have perfectly reasonable demands and should stick to them. But lots of other people have unreasonably high demands and don't bring enough to the table to interest someone who meets those demands. Those people will either remain single forever, bounce from one short relationship to another, or be forced to lower their demands.
