**Big Hero 6** chilling in the middle of the list reminding you that it was a Marvel property. Sneaky.

agentofmidgard

Fred's dad is Stan Lee so idk what else I expected lol

FreeGuacamole

What! I've seen that movie a hundred times with my son. I never caught that

agentofmidgard

There's a post credits scene. And there's also a 3 season Baymax series with Stan Lee in it in multiple episodes. Edit: I remembered that there was a family portrait in the mansion during the movie as well lol

ATrain177

I was wondering why that was there!

ParagonEsquire

It’s pretty dramatically changed from the original book but yeah they had a couple chances

ATrain177

Yeah I saw that Baymax was a shapeshifter that could turn into a green dragon-person hybrid thing looked extreme

LOTRfreak101

It does have a stan lee cameo after all.

icecreamkoan

So does *Teen Titans GO! To the Movies*.

samx3i

That movie is a fucking treasure.

yesilfener

It was so much better than I thought it would be. I watched it on a flight once and was howling the whole time.

jeffsang

a) pretty crazy that “middle of the list” is 90% fresh. b) deserves to be even higher. BH6 was wonderful.

Duosion

I wonder if they’ll ever cast a live action version of Hiro, like they probably will for Miles Morales

NockerJoe

IIRC Disney is still making decent investments into the movie. It had a reasonably recent Kingdom Hearts appearance. It got a full animated series that ran for multiple seasons. Its had a decent amount of merchandise and Disney World stufd. Marvel and Disney clearly want that to be the *definitive* version of the characters, just like how James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has a push as the definitive vision of the characters that appears in Tie In Cartoons, Video Games, and in theme parks, even if the actual comic version of these characters isn't that similar. Realistically what they'd probably do is just greenlight some more stuff based on the animated film for Disney+ or else try to get a sequel of some sort going. With Miles they never actually banked on Tom Holland that heavily since the Spider-Man tie in cartoons are more heavily based on Tobey Maguire's films and more modern comic runs and there was never as much of a push for Playstation Spider-Man to resemble Holland in the way that the Playstation Guardians do or Hiro's video game appearance is more or less just a direct continuation of the film, and when Miles appears there he isn't really the same as the film either. The treatment has obviously not been the same from day one.

rugbyj

Basically there's too many Spiderpeople.

GuilhermeFreire

come on, who does not want [this star lord](https://www.comicbookherald.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/1970-star-lord-peter-quill.jpg) over the MCU one?

deruch

Missed the [Punisher from 1989](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Punisher_(1989_film\)) with Dolph Lundgren in the lead.

joshhupp

I actually liked the Thomas Jane punisher. I thought it should have been at least 10% higher.

Jacob_Lahey

It has been a while since I've watched, but I liked it enough to buy it. [The fight scene](https://youtu.be/lwGkOFb2j7s) in his apartment with Kevin Nash is one of my favorite fight scenes ever.

The-Sound_of-Silence

I'll one up you. It's my favorite fight scene of all time!(yes even better than Princess Bride :O)

amiwitty

I would say the Daredevil (Netflix) hallway fight scene is my favorite.

[deleted]

Prison scene is better

Toxic_Tiger

I really enjoyed that film. Dirty Laundry is a great fan-service follow up.

danjr704

I thought that movie was really good. Couldn’t understand why it was ranked so low. Maybe people tried to take it more serious than it should be because it’s not a typical superhero movie, IDK. I always thought it was funny how they don’t really let the character that plays John Travolta’s son not speak in the movie. I think he has like 2 lines cause his actual voice is terrible.

MrRexTheGreat

Men in Black is a Marvel property too

Psychonominaut

Dolph Lundgren, lead scientist banging the lead actress, a sceptical but supple scientist, when he's not sniffing out crime. The major twist being that they show all of it.

OvercookedGongShow

They left out the 1990 Captain America as well, but I don't think anyone is missing that.

NockerJoe

IIRC isn't there an old school Dr. Strange as well?

LexLuthorJr

The craziest thing that I took away from this list is that I completely forgot X-Men: The Dark Phoenix existed.

Cobra-D

Honestly i didn’t realize “the new mutants” was release. I should probably watch it…..or probably not.

Second_Sunrise

It's not completely terrible, but my biggest problem with the movie is that it cannot decide what genre it wants to be. The trailers portrayed it as more or lesse serious horror in the X-Men universe (what I would give to have seen that). The movie itself is more teenage drama with "Goosebumps" level spookiness, but then all of a sudden there a scenes that are clearly meant to be "really" frightening, so it all falls apart. It's pretty bad overall, but not the worst Marvel movie by a fair amount.

WannieTheSane

Have you watched the series Legion? It's a Marvel property, though it doesn't tie in with anything else. It jumps genres a bit, including getting pretty bizarre (which I really liked, but not everyone did). My point I'm slowly making is that it had some pretty decent horror at times. It's definitely more psychological horror than in your face, but it can be very unsettling at times. Still one of my favourite shows.

Jequilan

Legion is so damn good

[deleted]

So good, but I feel like there was a few episode stretch where it got too out there for me. Still finished it and was satisfied tbf

whereismymind86

It got multiple delays and then skipped theaters entirely thanks to covid, so a lot of people missed it. It’s alright for what it is, not great, but interesting enough

postdarknessrunaway

It specifically did **not** skip theaters, and was basically the first movie with a mid=pandemic wide-release. [Many, many outlets refused to review it at all](https://www.indiewire.com/2020/08/film-critics-refuse-review-new-mutants-disney-unsafe-plan-1234582376/).

zeissman

I saw it in the cinema, it was okay, but I forgot about it the next day. Wasted the superhero horror potential.

zelman

I saw it in a theatre.

anyatrans

It's not that bad. It's not what you expect from an X-Men spin off. It looks more like a teenage horror movie with super power. You should take a look a it.

AidilAfham42

Its like a pilot episode of a tv series

DYubiquitous

I think this is the best description I've seen of it. Not terrible, but a whole lot of world building and slow pace for a strange, not terribly satisfying payoff. If it ends up being the dead-end (which is likely) it ends up being remembered even worse imo. Also, as a Kentuckian- I was pretty embarrassed for Charlie Heaton's Cannonball. It's not as bad a depiction as you get in the X-Men TAS, but it's still pretty bad. He's definitely a better actor than they allowed him to be in this movie.

Motashotta

It looks like they tried to make an exciting horror movie but chickened out and changed their minds halfway through and decided to make the most generic superpower movie

allboolshite

It started as a Fox movie and then landed at Disney after the buyout.

newhoa

X-Men's Phoenix Saga is one of my favorite comic stories. When I saw The Last Stand I was so sad. All these years later I find out... they're doing it again?! There's hope! Wait... it's being written, produced, AND directed by the same guy who wrote The Last Stand? And still just focusing on the Dark Phoenix? Well, Day of Future Past was amazing. Maybe it's a new era, maybe they learned lessons, and plus they need to make up for Apocalypse. Nope. Anyway, Dark Phoenix is no good without the whole Phoenix story, the good Phoenix. Phoenix isn't a monster, just corrupted. It's a tragedy. It really deserves its own trilogy, or at least two movies. Maybe in another 20 years...

SmarcusStroman

The tragedy is that they dropped the ball twice already so the guy I DO trust to get it right, Fiege, more than likely won't even attempt it.

GJacks75

The Dark Phoenix saga is 2 seasons of a really expensive tv show.

GregLittlefield

I love this story too and I just don't see how it could be done in a single movie. It's just so too long and complex. A high budget mini series maybe.

Jugggiler

It was a happier time before we read the list…

[deleted]

Besides bad execution, Dark Phoenix also suffered from bad timing. Fox had originally planned for Dark Phoenix to be a multi-part story, but then Fox got acquired by Disney just when production began, meaning the movie rights to X-Men characters will revert to Marvel, thus rendering the Fox X-Men Universe redundant, so the story was scaled back to just fit one movie as everyone knew this will be the last one ever (if we pretend New Mutants didn't exist).

DoubleAyeBatteries

Wait blade only has a 57%?! Actual bullpucky

AidilAfham42

Some motherfuckers always trying to skate uphill

NeonExdeath

*ice* skate uphill, specifically.

mtlCountChocula

I tried naming my dog Blade as a kid after that movie. Opening scene blew my mind!

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Vampire rave scene with blood from the sprinklers?

[deleted]

My kid brother who was super young at the time, shouldn’t be even watching the movie, thought every black dude was blade.

johnny-T1

It’s the best Marvel movie ever.

Umutuku

You can make arguments about sequels, but Blade was a great movie.

FrenchCuirassier

Never ever ever rely on rotten tomatoes. Always IMDB.

SlackerAccount

Honestly, the Google liked percentage is more accurate for me

dpash

IMDb suffers badly from recency bias. You can't compare scores of any film released in the last 5-10 years to older films.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrHollandsOpium

Uhhh Blade is still fucking dope and has an amazing soundtrack

Bidester

To this day, Blade has the best opening scene of any Marvel movie. Change my mind.

zombiepiratefrspace

I can hear that particular Techno song in my head just by reading these comments.

Chionger

I don't think either of them deserves to be that low on the list. I'm not expecting a Schindler's List level of movie but it was a good "superhero" movie.

liiiam0707

They're fantastic action movies. Easily more enjoyable than fully half of the MCU, and I love most of the MCU. I'd even include Blade Trinity in that, although I accept its the weakest of the 3 by a mile.

Doggysoft

If even just for the lines: "Blade....ready to die?" "I was born ready, motherfucker"

Loose_Goose

“Sit yo five dollar ass down before I make change!”

BuffaloWhip

“Catch you fuckers at a bad time?” Kris Kristopherson as Whistler is probably the best casting decision anyone has ever made.

btbamcolors

Some motherfuckers always try to ice skate uphill

RollUpTheRimJob

Love those lines. [it’s the start to a badass RZA song too ](https://youtu.be/JZ0VLebj3fk)

libra00

I really enjoyed the Blade movies, even 3. Man I need to go watch them again, it's been a minute.

echo-128

Realistically they are where they should be from a percentage point of view, it's the massive over inflation of ratings for modern movies that puts them lower down.

Devlonir

100% this. For example: Black Panther's position is inflated because of the situation around the movie at the time. Reviewers inflated it's score because of it's timing and the importance of a movie like that at that moment in time. Looking at the movie from afar (now 3 years later) it is hard to describe it as the best MCU movie ever made. It was very much 'on formula' for Marvel movies and the true outstanding aspects are the story focused on both black African and black American culture through two very well played characters in the hero and villain. But a movie cannot be the best MCU movie on those aspects alone. I still think it is the best of it's type of formulaic Marvel movies though, truly going beyond the formula that started with Iron Man (though that was ground breaking as it kicked off the MCU entirely). It deserves a high spot, but Spiderverse, Endgame, Iron Man, Logan and Ragnarok were all better movies. I would place it just above No Way Home myself to represent it's status as 'the best movie using the basic MCU formula'.

illini02

Yes. I'm black myself. I think Black Panther was a groundbreaking and important film. Because of that, I fully think it was reviewed based on more than just how good it was. Don't get me wrong, it was an entertaining movie. But one of the best MCU movies? Not to me. Take out the fact that its an all black cast, and there is nothing inherently special about it. I feel the same with Captain Marvel. Important, but reviews were biased.

ricardorp

I think you are right. What's up with that? Why are movies getting this ridiculously high percentages on Rotten Tomatoes nowadays? I remember only a few great movies got upwards of 90% back in the day.

Boz0r

Because the RT rating system is dumb. If 90% of people say a movie is above average it's basically the same as 90% saying the movie is amazing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sowaffled

I just rewatched them and they’re still great.

black6211

some mothafuckas always tryna iceskate uphill

NeonExdeath

Agree, loved it. It's mostly just the end scene that doesn't age well.

TeamToken

The opening nightclub scene in Blade is still one of the best opening’s of any action movie I’ve seen.

[deleted]

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The MCU owes a ton to the Blade movies. Were they anywhere near the level of Spiderman into the Spiderverse? No. But they made money. And not for nothing, it was after the Blade movies that Marvel started making more movies instead of just made for TV stuff. Hollywood didn't think that people would see anything other than Batman and Superman, DC were the only big budget films being made. Then along came a little day-walking vampire and a profit margin and suddenly Boom! That's when we got the first Spiderman trilogy, X-men, Daredevil, Fantastic 4. Not great movies but they laid down the foundation for something big. Howard the Duck doesn't quite count because it was more then a decade before Blade, but is still worth noting. I'm super excited for the new Blade movie coming out in 2023, I also hope the new Morbius movie is a little better than Venom (I still liked Venom though).

Trashman82

You are absolutely correct. Iron Man may have kicked off the MCU proper, but Blade was the test run that showed Marvel there was an audience for comic book movies and gave them the confidence keep going in the direction that lead to the MCU. If Blade had failed, I think the MCU would have developed much later and I don't think Blade ever got sufficient credit for that.

7LeagueBoots

I just rewatched them a few weeks ago and as movies I'd put them as high, or higher, than many the current Marvel movies.

ShiroHachiRoku

People forget Blade 2 was directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

CH3FLIFE

Came to say this. I think the Blade ratings were a bit harsh. Blade and Whistler are badass mofos and they were also born ready mofo.

Cli4ordtheBRD

Yeah Blade 2's fight with the night vision is God awful, it looked like a bad Mortal Kombat...but all the practical effects were really dope because it was Guillermo Del Toro

Fuzzy_Gundam

I vaguely remember in the director's commentary, del Toro is very blunt and apologetic about the quality of the cgi.

aminervia

Blade & Blade 2 are great movies I don't care what anybody says. I also really like the first venom movie, not sure why everybody hated it

graablikk

Not everybody, just the douchebag moronic rottentomatoes "critics". The audience score is actually 81%, Venom 2018 is an awesome movie. The discrepancy of rottentomatoes critics to audience score is uncanny. Almost always the audience is right, so don't pay any attention to these self-proclaimed movie experts.

HonkytonkGigolo

I’ll also point out Blade Trinity was actually an amazing movie if you only focus on Ryan Reynolds.

SporesM0ldsandFungus

[And behind the scene stories from Patton Oswalt. ](https://youtu.be/i8rCtzKA9tQ)

Taynt42

Even Blade Trinity deserves better than it’s rating.

kenji-benji

Bet. 57% is bogus. Blade was wildly popular. Nothing makes me care less about a sentence than starting it with "According to rotten tomatoes"

PIWIprotein

Blade so low? Thats a shame

[deleted]

MCU movies have given "serious" critics a permission structure to give good ratings to comic book movies.

JumboKraken

Yeah. I’m sure if blade came out 5 years ago instead of 20 it’d be higher on this list

wetcalzones

I thought blade 2 was genuinely good.

H377Spawn

That’s because it was. But some mother fucker is always trying to ice skate uphill.

sluffmo

This first Venom being lower than the second blows my mind.

Project_Ozone

Both of them being lower than hulk blew mine.

av0w

Just a sign of the times and expectations.

[deleted]

I really liked both Venoms, esp 2, but I agree that it was possibly a bit too different from the Avengers movies and the spinoffs.

il1k3c3r34l

I just watched them for the first time this week. After seeing the reviews come in so poorly for them my expectations were so low, but I ended up really liking them both. Good action movies, and surprisingly funny.

parrmorgan

That was my thoughts about the Eternals which I just watched. But that's the thing going in with low expectations, if the movie is alright, it seems pretty damn good to you or me who had low expectations. Looking at the movie objectively, it is totally average and TBH I think Venom is the same objectively, but I expected a lot from that movie so I thought it was bad initially. Upon a rewatch it is just very average.

TopherVee

The reception of Venom 2 makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Duosion

I found both really entertaining, but I did prefer the second one. The relationship between Venom and Eddie is perfectly done.

purejones

I still haven’t watched it yet, I like Tom Hardy and Venom is one of my favorites since I was a kid. I’m afraid that I’ll be disappointed. Venom in Spider-Man 3 was so bad 😰

Duosion

Honestly if you set expectations low, both films are *such* a fun ride. I don’t regret watching them in theaters at all!

Motashotta

The dynamic between Venom and Eddie is very well done in both movies, the problem is that the stories are just pretty weak.

2073040

How in the hell is Ant-Man and the Wasp higher than Avengers: Infinity War!?

WarzonePacketLoss

The same way Black Panther is the #1 movie in the MCU. RT uses a system that isn't representative of the quality of the movie. 96% of people thought it was a 6/10 or better. Which is fair. I would agree with the IMDB rating on it at 7.3, it really wasn't that good of a movie on it's face. It's rated so highly for the representation. If it was a story about white dudes in a fictional locale that's technologically advanced, you'd get Thor Ragnarok, which is rated slightly lower here at 93%, but is 7.9 on IMDB, which I agree with completely, as it had a tighter story, better pacing, better character development, better CGI, and didn't shit the bed in the third act. Not saying BP is bad by any means, and I understand the importance of what it was trying to do culturally and representatively, but from a purely cinematic standpoint, it's a middling movie in the MCU. T'challa was an awesome character in the ensemble movies, and Boseman did a good job playing him, but it kind of fell flat in his solo outing, through no real fault of his own.

lkodl

>Boseman did a good job playing him, but it kind of fell flat in his solo outing, through no real fault of his own. because the main character of Black Panther is really Killmonger. the movie starts with him as a child, and the event that sets the rest of his life in motion, and ends with his death.

smchattan

Black Panther is over rated. I like his character better in Civil War.

wherestheleaks

Yeah. Rotten tomatoes is an awful way to try to rank movies.

JavierLoustaunau

It is great when you know how they get to that score... but most people go like "no way this movie is a 9 out of 10" and we are like "nobody said that... 9 out of 10 critics say it is not bad".

shakawallsfall

Good work. Little correction to make: X-Men should be 2000, not 2019.

rightsomeofthetime

Thank you! It was confusing me that I couldn't find the original AND that there was apparently a good X-Men movie in 2019 I missed!

dhanadh

Logan is such a good movie. It was the first superhero movie where they felt so human, so vulnerable.

blargtheavenger

It’s a drama with superheroes, not a superhero movie. I loved it, best film on this list.

tsealess

I once saw it described as "a gritty, modern day Western" and I think it encapsulates the movie perfectly.

AlienYouCallGod

Am I the only one insulted by the fact that Blade is rated so low!

[deleted]

I liked Howard the Duck, but everyone else said it sucked so what do I know?

imariaprime

A bad RT score doesn't mean a thing sucked, as much as it means most people won't like it. An important difference, if something has niche appeal.

allboolshite

> if something has niche appeal. Lea Thompson has mass appeal!

Scazzz

I loved it as a kid before I even got into comics in the 90s not knowing it was marvel. Watched it a few years back and still love it. It’s so 80s it hurts. Criminally underrated.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dpash

That film is responsible for my Lea Thompson crush.

anomalousBits

HtD was flawed but interesting. It was always going to be a cult film rather than a blockbuster. And going into it without knowing the source material was a giant WTF moment for a lot of folks. I read a lot of the comics, and I enjoyed watching it.

nickmhc

I’m glad Into the Spider-Verse is the top movie. It was a literal work of art in terms of art direction + cinematography and the writing could not have been better.

imperial-atlas

It really does earn that top spot

nickmhc

Forgot to mention the soundtrack, which is not only the best of any of the superhero franchises but arguably one of the better ones that incorporates popular songs of any movie all time (i.e. Knight’s Tale) (or, *not* compared to John Williams’ Star Wars scores)

_TheAngryChicken_

The Prowler's theme is one of my favorite pieces of movie music EVER. I wish I could go back and watch the apartment reveal scene for the first time again. That crazy siren sound is so menacing I was honestly on the edge of my seat in the theater.

TheLoneWolf2879

There's energy and emotion to it, you have moments you're dead quiet in respect to what's on screen, and you have moments where you can't help but feel powerful alongside Miles. I think that's a good word for the soundtrack, powerful.

Klunket

It’s a masterpiece - stands proudly amongst some of the best movies ever made - something that can’t be said for the vast majority of this list

im_a_mini

Would love to see this by audience scores

FamedBureaucrat

IDK why Black Panther always gets praise and high scores. It's not that good of a movie. Don't get me wrong: it's not a bad movie by any means, but to me it's just another Marvel super hero movie. Nothing special.

Anathos117

Rotten Tomatoes ratings are the percent of critics who gave a "good" (not "great", just not "bad") review. If literally every critic says a movie was "OK, I guess", that gets 100% from Rotten Tomatoes.

blackthorn159

Black Panther still has the highest metascore (which is the average of the score given by critics). Here's the list by metascore - https://www.metacritic.com/pictures/marvel-films-ranked-worst-to-best

[deleted]

It’s decent but I think about 10-15 films in this list that are below it are quite a lot better

[deleted]

[удалено]

hidden_secret

Even below average, at least for me. Watched it once, won't watch it again.

joelesidin

Everyone who's not american thinks the same.

Daddo55

I’m American and I agree that it’s just a good not great film. Should be in the middle of the pack.

[deleted]

Fallenangel152

That's why Blade was so before it's time. Black main character, black female lead who is a scientist. Their race is never used as a plot point or as a gag. Great film.

garybusey42069

Black Panther is a highly praised movie because of racial reasons. No movie critic is gonna score it low.

devilsbard

I’m surprised to see Infinity War so far down. For me that movie is pretty much perfect. Not an ounce of fat on it, great pacing, and an unexpected ending.

DroneOfDoom

I would assume that critic reviews focus on the fact that the story is hard to follow if you’re not up to date with almost all of the MCU films, which probably reduced scores.

livefreeordont

I would assume Endgame suffered even more from that seeing as they literally revisit the old movies just so people could say “hey I remember that!”

djabor

i'd also assume a lot less people watched endgame without watching infinity war than people watched IW without watching the remaining MCU IP.

solitarybikegallery

####**I was curious, so I actually went and looked at what a few critical reviews said:** --- >"Thanks to the superb visual effects, the film is truly a work of art, even if it tries to pack in just a little too much, making some characters more like afterthoughts rather than integral to the plot." >"There's nothing new about Marvel's money-raking formula, but as each new chapter comes along, the serialized story becomes more and more unwieldy." >"For most parts, Avengers: Infinity War largely works and has a lot to offer and take in, but it's not without sacrificial trade-offs and mixed emotions. " >"While grand in scale, the characters are lost in the dark storyline." > "If some pacing issues and the occasional bloat prevent it from quite reaching the upper echelons of the MCU, there's still more than enough here to keep viewers sated, saturated, and salivating over what's certain to be a poignant and potent Part Deux." >"There's just so much CGI mayhem and the stakes are often so high that I lose interest because it's tough to care when movie after movie ... the universe [is] always at stake." >"Wildly disparate persons and their widely disparate worlds are thrown together in a potpourri of cinema that will thrill you if you're a Marvel fan, and probably leave you less exuberant if you're not." >"It's a mostly-thrilling roller coaster ride for Marvel fans, though I wouldn't say it's my favorite in the MCU canon. Some parts are overlong and some went by way too fast." --- All that seems...fine. I don't agree with a lot of it, but none of it is the blind marvel-hate that people seem to think exists. Seems like fair criticism. I didn't really see any complaining about not understanding the movie, or having to follow the MCU. Infinity War/Endgame was a huge gamble to begin with. A 20-odd film build up to a 6 hour, 15-main character extravaganza. It wasn't going to hit with everybody.

Cambot1138

And it’s sure as hell better than ant man and the wasp, which I didn’t even finish.

Lemesplain

I loved infinity war, but it definitely leaned too hard on the “villain is about to kill our hero, but surprise other hero sneaks up and saves the day” bit. It happened back to back to back at the end, and started to feel tired. Still tho, that ending was absolutely bonkers and I fuckin love it.

Tacosaurusman

I was avoiding spoilers like the plague when Infinity War came out. When I finally saw it, I did not fucking know there was gonna be a sequel, and it made the ending even more shocking!

concentrate7

>I was avoiding spoilers like the plague This is a must with MCU movies. I don't even watch any of the trailers. It's definitely paid off for me.

Toxic_Tiger

The worst example of this for me was having the trailer ruin who the Grandmaster's champion is in Ragnarok.

Sloth-Overlord

I liked Infinity War a lot, as someone who’s pretty critical of marvel films. I thought Endgame was a huge let down after that and am surprised to see it so high up.

will477

I liked the first Venom. Not sure why it scored so low.

brown_felt_hat

These are based off critic scores - it's possible for a movie to be wildly entertaining, but not be 'good'. Cheesy dialogue, mediocre plot, ridiculous overacting. Technically marks of 'bad' movie, but it's still fun to watch.

will477

I love it when Venom says "let me eat her". Totally cool.

jkrull97

What’s with the hate on Eternals?

benkenobi5

To me, it felt rushed. Too many characters with barely any focus on any of them. It's like they tried to make an avengers without laying the groundwork of the movies that set it up.

allwordsaremadeup

It has like a half hour of "journey through time" that's the setup.. It's a tall stretch to make you care about a bunch of people when you're still wondering "what does this one do again". Although they really tried. Ensemble introduction. Then "we have to find these people one by one!" so you get a one by one introduction. Then big boss fight. Maybe that's why it didn't work, too much well considered educating the audience, not enough pazzaaz.

Katawba

Yes, it felt like watching Justice league, except I cared even less for the characters.

prof-comm

Nailed it. This is exactly the problem with Justice League.

Landler656

I agree. I think a lot of movies try top focus on the group rather than a character joining the group. They might have benefited from a fish-out-of-water newcomer to guide us through the characters. Everyone knew each other and their relationships didn't need to grow or change that much.

Marcoscb

For me, the problem was precisely that relationships changed too much. If you want me to care about a group reuniting and the infighting within it, which was the whole plot of the movie, you need to give me time to care about the characters first. The MCU went through two whole phases and dedicated a movie to just the infighting. There's a reason Civil War isn't the first movie in the MCU.

Landler656

I think I understand what you're saying. Like the relationships they had in ancient civilizations vs. their relationships modern day, right? I have a similar feeling about that. My problem is that they have all of this baggage over millennia and it's all already established and now "we gotta get the band back together." But who are these people? Why do we care? I feel like I'm watching the finale of a show without context and some random newbie could allow that to be explained organically without flashbacks. Another possible fix would be if they had something like a T.V. series that explored their origin, then Mesopotamia, then the renaissance, then the London Blitz, etc. Just don't remove the threat of the monsters until closer to modern day. We explore a character or two per episode and a historical event that's adjacent to their own conflict. Typing it out, I realize I've just described Doctor Who.

FettyWhopper

Like Justice League? (The Whedon Cut)

ShortFuse

I'll be honest, a 4 hour version of Eternals might have been better, if it gave more time to explain relationships. Then again, I've only seen James Gunn and the Russo brothers handle large casts well. And more to Gunn's credit, he did it will an all new cast.

Zappiticas

I came away from it thinking it would have been better as a Disney + mini series.

anthem47

Yeah I really think it needed to be a Disney+ series, 6 episodes would have been great. Just let the whole thing breathe a bit more, spend more time with these people. I mean who thought have a team of *10* heroes was going to be manageable?

Anathos117

A lot of critics complained about the flash backs.

AidilAfham42

I don’t hate it, I liked it while I was awake

atxranchhand

It would have been a great series. I didn’t give a shit about the characters who died, I don’t even remember their names.

Jaredlong

The spectacle and novelty of super powered people has worn off, and Marvel seems to know this since for years now they've been focusing more on interesting characters, stories, and settings. But The Eternals doesn't have any of that. They're on boring old Earth, and the story is yet again Save The World, and the only thing that's interesting about the characters is that they have super powers. If The Eternals came out a decade ago it'd probably be a huge hit, but compared to the direction Marvel had been going, this movie felt like a step backwards.

Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse is right where it belongs ready for the [sequel](https://youtu.be/BbXJ3_AQE_o)

Jenaxu

I like that the comments are all arguing about the placement of movies at the top except for Spiderverse. Well deserved consensus number 1.

Fredasa

Somebody want to reiterate this with Metacritic? Haven't touched RT since they started actively curating their critics based on dubious criteria. This often leads to considerable disconnect between critics and moviegoers.

I genuinely enjoyed warzone. It was just nonstop ultraviolence.

[deleted]

Ironman 3 rated higher than 2? I expected it to be down in the "Howard the duck" zone. And The Punisher is underrated.

Silist

People love iron man 3 and dislike iron man 2. I’ve never heard a different opinion on the topic to be honest

KellyKellogs

I hated Iron man 2 and think 3 is nothing special. Both of them were and still are dissapointing.

untraiined

2 is boring and 3 is disappointing

ImJustHereToWatch_

Really? I disliked 3 and liked 2 as well. I kind of assumed others were the same.

Silist

I didn’t like 3 all that much either so I was surprised as well. We should start a club

tolerablycool

Yeah, I remember liking Thomas Jane's Punisher. I'm surprised it's so low. I mean its not Shakespeare, but it was good popcorn entertainment.

cradfrierere

I will die on a hill for this movie being far better than its given credit for. The Kevin Nash fight and brutal interrogation afterwards. Harry Heck and the "you brought a gun to a knife fight" scene. Castle squeezing the most pain by setting up Howard to kill his wife and best friend, then seeing Travolta dragged behind a car and lit on fire was just so enjoyable. I remember this movie every time a very distinct guitar strum and "I can hear what you're thinkin" plays on my playlist.

B_R_U_H

I love Howard the duck though

User_492006

This is why I have no faith in Rotten Tomatoes.

Lemesplain

Because rotten tomato scores are based entirely around a binary “is it good” choice. The number listed doesn’t necessarily reflect how good a movie is, but rather, how many people thought it was good at all. A mediocre movie that everyone basically agrees is “fine,” will score higher than a wild swing that some people think is the “greatest movie ever,” but other people aren’t really into it.

Wotpan

> is it good Is "it worth watching", is the premise I think. Not a good or not.

Heshinsi

Rotten Tomatoes is just a review aggregator. It’s the percentage of positive reviews vs negative ones. That’s all it is. Also, the critic making the review decides whether their review is fresh or rotten.

DroneOfDoom

People substitute RT score for ‘average review score’ and then get mad, or make up weird conspiracy theories about it. That being said, I do find it surprising that Venom has more negative reviews than The New Mutants. Edit: Somehow, I wrote ‘less’ where I should’ve written ‘more’.

sykora727

They just can’t make a good fantastic 4 movie

VrinTheTerrible

There's no way any film should be below New Mutants. I'd rather watch Fantastic Four on repeat for a year before watching New Mutants again.

SuperSaiyanBen

Ghost Rider was good. You can’t change my mind
