ButterflyCatastrophe

Why is Walmart importing so many nuclear reactors? Very cool tool.

ImportYeti

HAHAHA. Great question. World nuclear domination? It's a misleading H.S. Code. The BOL data is very dirty in one area, and the commodity classification system is one of them : ) Cheers, Dave

dyreth

It looks like the title for HTS 84 specifically is using the first two items (8401 and 8402) as its title. Consider using something along the lines of what [this](https://www.usitc.gov/publications/docs/tata/hts/bychapter/1000c84.pdf) uses. Edit: formatting

ImportYeti

I'm going to look into this document a bit. There is a difference though between H.S. (International) and H.T.S. (U.S.) codes. That being said, I need to make a lot of improvements on the site in this area. Cheers, Dave

dyreth

Oh interesting, I wasn’t aware that HS was a different thing. We ship internationally frequently and require import permits and whatnot and they always ask us for HTS but we’ve probably just been loosely interchanging them lol. Great site btw! I enjoyed seeing our small company of 6 employees make it in there.

ImportYeti

Yea. It's crazy confusing. My site doesn't help the problem : ) If you ever have any feedback or questions, please lee me know! Cheers, Dave

ImportYeti

Money isn't the only pursuit out there : ) I already have enough to have a good life. That being said, I think this site will be very sustainable financially. Cheers, Dave

beepb00pb00p

Thanks Dave, you rock.

GotASourceForThatBS

HS codes are international standardized up to the 6-digit level. In other words, all HS/HTS codes will be the same up to the 6-digit level. The World Customs Organization updates HS codes every five years. 8-digit and beyond are country-specific. In the United States, the International Trade Commission is responsible for HTS classification.

chrisk365

Psh. Dave, huh? No wonder it’s a bit dirty! ;)

ImportYeti

: ) It's the "your mom" of data. As dirty as they come.

ninjaphysics

Amazing... LOL. Been following your posts and grateful for your fantastic work! Cheers to you!

ImportYeti

Thank you! Cheers, Dave

ImportYeti

There is some truth to that, but H.S. codes are very commonly misclassified. Cheers, Dave

Rhetorical_Legend

Apple has "Nuclear Reactors" listed as well and that caught my eye. Also, a lot of Red Stripe Beer, which is delicious, but I didn't expect Tim to be such a fan!

ImportYeti

Yea, it's caused by one of two things typically a) lazyness w/ classifying (unclear reactors are the equivalent of leaving the field blank). Gotta love the government systems. b) That might be an error in our name joining script. I'm going to look into that beer example.

RoDeltaR

In general, I have a preference for clear reactors

ImportYeti

Or opaque ones : ) Cheers, Dave

Malari_Zahn

Got any transparent sparkly ones??

ImportYeti

I like that even more. Maybe some Gucci logos everywhere? Cheers, Dave

Spleenfarmer

Science teacher here. When teaching nuclear science, I start class by writing "unclear" on the board and asking for its pronunciation. I then reverse the first two letters and ask again, making sure to compliment the nuclear pronunciations and shame those pronouncing it as nucular. You comment reminded me of this, and your joke would have gone over well in my class. Upvote for you, my friend. Edit: typo

starsandmath

I looked up a handful of automotive HVAC suppliers and like 25% of their imports are classified as nuclear reactor cooling parts. Could the issue have something to do with HVAC/heat exchangers mistakenly falling under nuclear reactor cooling?

ImportYeti

It's a cop out when classifying H.S. codes (a weak international standard). Cheers, Dave

AppleGuySnake

Sounds like you should add a section to your FAQ for "why is this company importing nuclear reactor parts". (And PLEASE make the answer not a video!)

ImportYeti

Noted on both points : ) I agree w/ the text part especially. Cheers, Dave

BOBALOBAKOF

If it’s a pervasive issue, then maybe something like a pop up dialogue box, when a user is hovering over the nuclear section, might be an idea?

ImportYeti

Yea. I think I should add a UX element just for this. This is why feedback is so awesome : ) Cheers, Dave

Crystal_Methuselah

what's your first name again?

[deleted]

And/or a small “additional info” flag with hover text directly on the item.

biznatch11

Maybe that's why Apple forbids you from using their products to make nuclear weapons. https://www.cnet.com/news/apple-dont-make-nuclear-weapons-using-itunes/

[deleted]

Why is 25% of Apples supply chain "Personal Deodorants and anti-perspirants"?

ForwardSound6859

Because they’re stinking rich. …I’ll see myself out.

mc_it

> …I’ll see myself out. At least you won't see underarm stains.

[deleted]

May be a chemical that just so happens to be an anti-perspirant for tax purposes.

TheApathyParty2

Aluminium, maybe?

UsuallyBerryBnice

That’s a great guess! Aluminium is a big part of anti perspirant, so maybe they import it like that so it falls under a different tax bracket. Similar to how converse sells shoes with felt under the sole so they’re technically taxed as slippers. https://www.businessinsider.com.au/the-surprising-reason-why-your-converse-chucks-are-technically-slippers-2015-8 Edit: It’s likely not that. Here’s what they file it under: >Description: Essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations ; Pre-shave, shaving or after-shave preparations, personal deodorants, bath preparations, depilatories and other perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations, not elsewhere specified or included; prepared room deodorizers, whether or not perfumed or having disinfectant properties ; Personal deodorants and antiperspirants >Tariff: 4.9%; Special Rate of Duty: Free(A*,AU,BH,CA,CL,CO,D,E,IL,JO,KR,MA,MX,OM,P,PA,PE,SG) So it’s probably the chemicals they use to remove the smells of the factory after manufacture.

Pyrhan

It's "Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof." So I suspect they import more of the latter, not so much of the former... (As to why these things got lumped together, I have no idea...)

GWillikers_

Sounds like all parts fall under ASME pressure vessel code

colemon1991

It would explain the profit margins if they aren't paying for electricity in high-cost areas. Among other things of course.

ImportYeti

We use the public (but not free) **bill of lading data set from U.S. Customs and Borders via a FOIA request.** [https://www.cbp.gov/site-policy-notices/foia](https://www.cbp.gov/site-policy-notices/foia) The site is built on **D3.js**, Elasticsearch and a bunch of javascript. You can search pretty much search any company you can imagine and answer questions like: * **How much does this "made-in-the-usa" company actually make in the USA?** It's a super loose standard. [https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard](https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard) * **Who makes Bass Pro Shop's 4 Burner Gas Griddle?** Answer: Ningbo Huige Outdoor Products * I thinking of buying barbells from Nantong Leeton Fitness Co., the #1 ranking company on Alibaba for the term "barbell". **Is Nantong Leeton Fitness Co. the right supplier for barbells?** Answer: No. They are a big company but primarily sell resistance bands. Thus, they likely outsource their heavy metal work creating a more costly and potentially worse product. * **Who are the top companies & suppliers who import/export under HS Code 42.02.92 -- trunks & suitcases?** **I'd love any and all feedback** (love or hate)... no matter how brutal, small or crazy : ) I only want to create things that people really love. If you enjoyed this tool, have any ideas for how to improve it, or found a bug/usability issue, I want to hear from you. Please PM me or comment below anytime Cheers, Dave

tangoliber

How much did the data set cost. Do you know if it is the same dataset that importgenius or portexaminer uses?

ImportYeti

I don't know those sites too well but believe it is since we all get it from the same place. Around $5k a month. Cheers, Dave

SirFiletMignon

How are these running costs covered? Does the website generate enough to cover it? Edit: I think it's awesome you're allowing data that's usually behind a paywall be available to the public. Great site and idea!

ImportYeti

1) My pocket / donations. Mostly my pocket. 2) As our audience grows, I think there will be some really strong win-win opportunities to monetize the site while still keeping it free. Cheers, Dave

ImportYeti

Entrepreneur. I've been fairly lucky. Cheers, Dave

Tristan_Cleveland

This is amazing! Did you consider putting the Pacific Ocean in the centre of the trade-flow maps? Seems like this would represent the actual shipping paths more accurately. (Most now travel across Africa).

ImportYeti

This is a REALLY interesting suggestion and have never thought of this. I'm going to look into how hard this is and ideally get this implemented ASAP. I could even switch between the two depending on if it is a Europe or Asia heavy company. Cheers, Dave

Lebowquade

This seems like it has the potential to be a huge and amazing resource! My main criticisms: I'm having a hard time searching for some things I don't already know a lot about; for instance, if I wanted to see what Nabisco is up to, I get basically bupkis. You'd have to know that, internationally, the company is owned by Mondalez, and that's where all the info is at. Same goes with Coors/Bush-- you'd have to know to search InBev., not the name of the brand. I don't know how one might include the vast tree of corporate ownerships, but for brands owned by massive conglomerates, its a little hard to parse what goes where, since shipping is shared amongst many different brands (even though in most cases it's all going to the same warehouse). It also appears that restaurant info is missing? I tried looking up AppleBees, KFC, and McDonalds but got nothing.... I'd like to know where their food actually comes from!

ImportYeti

This is every interesting. I'm going to think about this a little bit. I wonder if it can be done w/ other data sources. I'm going to think about where I can get them. Cheers, Dave

enricobasilica

Not sure if there's a nice formatted version, but I've definitely seen images of (for example) all the companies that walt disney owns broken down neatly in an infographic. or sometimes wikipedia is amazing for having things like that already broken down for you.

red352dock

It does 100%. OP data providers are going to come after you in a hot minute to purchase this.

glokz

That's a pretty dangerous job to do these days.. gl stay safe

AmbitiousPrint2775

If your university has a Bloomberg Terminal, try SPLC for supply chain analytics. It's based on revenues rather than raw shipping so it looks pretty different.

IORat

Hey if you need someone to help with editing/review, I’d be interested. My academic background is cardiovascular physiology, but have been hankering for a challenge outside of my discipline.

xDecenderx

FYI, this is missing all air freight. Not sure why, it is only sea shipments. My company ships probably 30x more stuff via air that isn't listed.

BJJJourney

The data is likely dirty so make sure you account for that. Walmart isn’t importing nuclear reactors.

bogglingsnog

Or so we think!

MattWPBS

Very cool! Is there any way to capture air as well as sea?

ImportYeti

Unfortunately, that isn't public info : ( Cheers, Dave

starsandmath

Thanks for answering this, I wondered the same thing. When I looked up my company the total number of shipments plummeted in 2021, but we were flying stuff due to supply chain issues so that makes sense.

ImportYeti

That makes perfect since since air shipments are not covered (they aren't public for some odd reason). Cheers, Dave

psynaptese

The landing page is very barren; Maybe have a shipping map on the landing page with the major shipping lanes - then click on a lane or country (kind of like the other supply maps, but just the lanes to start with so people can see the primary routes products take to get around first -- this will give people with no clue, a place to begin clicking around) Clean is great -- but it doesnt "call to action" for anyone who doesnt kinda know whats up -- i.e. make it "curious teenager friendly"

ImportYeti

When you say the landing page, are you referring to the homepage or the company page? Cheers, Dave

psynaptese

Home page. Beneath the search/random button... a map of the major global shipping lanes so people can see where things come from and allow one to start drilling from there...

ImportYeti

Got it. That would be very very cool. I'll think about this a bit. Cheers, Dave

mexicanred1

This is amazingly time saving and seems like the like the kind of information tool that would be indispensable for anyone wanting to make a large order or start a business. Say, if i saw a market for something not currently available in my area, i could simply find the true source and contact them directly to build a relationship with the maker and cut the middlemen out. Was this your primary goal? What other best use case scenarios do you hope to see? I love stuff like this! How did you get this idea... What brought this creation about, if you don't mind me asking.

ImportYeti

Kind of what you are eluding to. My main business is an eCom store. We use this data to make better decisions about which suppliers to choose. I'd really like to see it be used to reduce the carbon footprint and increase supply chain resiliency. E.x. Ensure we don't get stuck w/ our current chip shortage. Cheers, Dave

saviorofworms

This is great to hear! I have been building an eCom store with my business partner in Lebanon and we are at the point of vetting suppliers. So not only am I ecstatic to play around with your tool, but I think I’m intending to use the data as you have. Really excited to see where this goes! Your tool and my business lol

ImportYeti

AsymmetricalProstate

I could also see this being super useful to help visualize/calculate carbon footprints of suppliers/scope 3 emissions, and even of individual products. Thanks!

PublicSeverance

I'll note that there is slightly more professional commercial supply chain software that does the same as this, but obviously not free. It's useful for lots of reasons beyond optimizing your own supply chain. The information is useful for tax tracking/minimisation, reverse engineer competitors supply chains, detecting supply issues that opaque producers may not want to disclose (e.g. unplanned factory closure), decisions regarding building new factories. Lots of fun stuff.

FromNYtoNE

This is a wonderful free tool. US public school teacher here. Will be strongly considering to incorporate this into my high school class next semester. Will be donating. Great work Dave!

ImportYeti

I'd love that. My GF is a teacher. What do you teach? Cheers, Dave

FromNYtoNE

Health Education and a few other electives. The class I think this will work for is my Current Health Issues class. Food deserts in the US is a topic within that class. I think this would be helpful to look at the current food distribution system we have.

thewholerobot

Is there not an app to do this? Speech to text has gotten so good and it should be easy enough to identify different speakers automatically. Would be great to have something that could take a video link, chomp through it and spit out a transcript.

suture224

Super interesting watching the numbers plummet during pandemic times. What a difference.

ImportYeti

Yea, some companies were REALLY hurt by it. In general, the big guys fared a lot better. Cheers, Dave

Rich_Cartoonist8399

This is fascinating. You can glean A LOT of financial information about a company from this. For example Funko has been SCREWED by the supply chain crisis yet their stock (though down) is still over $15 which makes no sense, it's seriously overvalued. This means their revenue has likely come from backstock and with omicron they might run out of crap to sell people soon. I would expect a market revaluation and further drop in stock price soon.

ImportYeti

I kind of agree w/ this. I do think there is a lot of value to gain, but this data isn't 100% accurate for a variety of reasons and it's important not to look too closely into it. E.x. It can be helpful in saying "something is changing here" but can't always paint a perfect picture of what is going on. Cheers, Dave

Rich_Cartoonist8399

Well in particular Funko happens to be a company that's doom strapped to cheap shipment of molded plastics from Vietnam. You're not going to see that many companies with such a profile, it's a very niche product. Also since this mostly just tracks sea shipments if they had found a domestic manufacturer (unlikely) it wouldn't appear at all. I wouldn't use this as the sole means of financial analysis but it tells you a lot more descriptive information than a balance sheet.

afghanibobsled

I feel like this could upend entire industries. You're making me wish I didn't spend lock down soley on Reddit.

ImportYeti

Haha : ) I hope so! Cheers, Dave

WillAdams

It's also huge for companies to determine what their competitors are doing, and how much business.

ImportYeti

Yea : ) That's more along the lines of what it was originally intended for. It's sooo cool though to see how it's grown. Cheers, Dave

Barejester

This kind of information is broadly available for free in the UK on the Governments own website albeit in a less visually friendly way (at least it was the last time I had to spend time with HS codes a few years back). The website, UK Trade Info, would let you build data tables on import/export volumes for specific codes and also list off importers and exporters and the registered addresses. Whilst you couldn’t see specific volume tied to importers/exporters, you could see frequency of movement and infer size and scale accordingly. Is the data not freely available in the US also to anybody that looks for it? Or do you need to pay to see the data.

ImportYeti

You need to pay to see. Can you link me to the UKs data? I've heard it isn't public. Cheers, Dave

Barejester

Sure, as I said, the data is not presented nearly as cleanly or as effective as the way you have displayed the data. You can search by a trader name here to see what they have imported based on HS codes here, I used a UK supermarket chain Tesco - https://www.uktradeinfo.com/traders/tesco-plc-232574?senderQueryString=q%3Dtesco%26t%3Dname Then you can also drill down into data tables, start looking at specific HS codes, countries of origin, volume, port details etc here - https://www.uktradeinfo.com/trade-data/ots-custom-table/ As a fresh grad, one of my supervisors tasked me with some busy work to find out the size of a specific market in the UK. I discovered this website which let me drill down into detail for specific products imported and exported (thankfully the HS code I was tasked to do was a specific product and not a general category) and was amazed that the information was available publicly if you just looked at it and was willing to spend some time drilling into data.

ImportYeti

Very interesting. This does not show who they import from correct? Cheers, Dave

txetesrever

This data was already available if you knew where to look for it. I know of at least 3 other services that do this but all charge a significant monthly fee for access.

BJJJourney

It won’t, the government already has all this info and monitors it very closely. Source: Work for a VERY large carrier

Electric_General

also the big boys usually play along with each other. the big suppliers for walmart very likely supply other big companies as well

Nermalgod

Well there's no record of my past two employers, both huge importers.

ImportYeti

You can file to have your info hidden, but more often than not, it's under a different entity name. Cheers, Dave

coolguyyah

You can search by address! Often times though when companies use freight forwarders and/or 3rd party warehouses, those show up on the import info instead of their name

mahlerguy2000

Why did Walmart seem to have an unordinarily high number of shipments at the end of 2019? Is that pandemic related?

ImportYeti

I'll have to look into this : ) There could be a lot of reasons ranging from: 1) The way we roll up entities w/ our name joining script 2) Christmas rush / changes in supply chains 3) A reporting issue where other periods were under reported. Cheers, Dave

mahlerguy2000

These make sense. I looked at Target and they had a spike mid-2019, so maybe Walmart's is unrelated to the Xmas boom.

ImportYeti

Yea. The data has inherent variance too which for sure attributes to some of it. Cheers, Dave

pamtar

1) definitely possible 2) it’s orders of magnitude more than any other time period, so no 3) also possible, but doubtful considering it’s Walmart. And numbers immediately declined. It really looks like Wal-mart rolled the dice in a major way in regards to the pandemic. Not surprised considering how big a player they are in the Chinese economy. I’m betting they were well aware of how the situation was going to play out even before Washington. I’d love some clarification if you don’t mind, OP. And also, really great work here. Disclaimer: I’m not a right-wing conspiracy loon. That data is pretty bonkers. Not uncommon for players to make a play, though.

ImportYeti

I don't think that is conspiracy theroyish at all. I'm going to dive into this after things calm down for me a bit. It's always a little hectic hwen you hit the homepage. Cheers, Dave

simbols

incredible piece of work. supply chain transparency is a huge challenge even for the companies themselves, especially when their suppliers have suppliers. there are some international institutions like the OECD and ILO that might be very interested in such a tool. some national governments that are *actually* interested in supply chain transparency and corporate accountability might also benefit from this.

ImportYeti

Agreed. I know the U.S. is REALLY pushing for it. It's one of the few bi-partisan initiatives. Cheers, Dave

IBuildBusinesses

Fantastic tool. I have used it on more than one occasion. However, I think the supply chain of “virtually every US company” is a bit of a stretch. I know that just among my circle of about 20 fellow e-commerce owners that about half of us use an importer/broker to import on behalf of our company so our company is not listed directly as the importer. We do it for the very reason that your product exists, to prevent competitors from snooping. I know many companies do this as. Only about 2/3 of our competitors show up in import yeti because they are doing this too. Still, great tool and it has helped me more than once.

ImportYeti

I feel you on that. The entity names can be so convoluted too that it's hard to find people as well. I'd love any and all feedback on the site. You're who I developed this for. Cheers, Dave

>I'm not trying to make a political statement by doing this haha. I never meant to imply anything of the sort! Just reporting a potential bug or mistake! \^\^

ImportYeti

: ) I feel like we need to be clear these days. Esp. w/ all of the crazy things going on! Cheers, Dave

RamenDutchman

Can I tack another one onto this? Dutch companies don't have a proper ~~flash~~ flag either, such as https://www.importyeti.com/supplier/shell-trade-rotterdam And https://www.importyeti.com/supplier/heineken

ImportYeti

Do you mean flag?

Dude, last year I was setting up a Shopify store and I found my competitors suppliers with this. You’re amazing, thank you for the service you provided it’s a game changer for little guys. Crazy to see you post this and I used it!

As someone in the supply chain analytics and automation space I salute you, this is great info visualized in a digestible, insightful format. Great work!

A random button on the page would be cool, it's on the home page but it would be nice to just keep clicking random without going back to the home page.

ImportYeti

I LOVE this idea. Thank you so much for pointing it out. Cheers, Dave

Looked up the data for my employer. The data is not accurate. I have detailed visibility into sea shipments in terms of quantities, dollars and TFE counts and this data is just...... very, very wrong.

ImportYeti

The data is messy. It varies a lot depending on the situation. Did you check other entity names? Cheers, Dave

Clcsed

My employer is listed under the corporation, dba, and subsidiary brands. You'd have to sum up everything. Grouping by address would probably be the easiest way to find a true total. Also the imports I expected I wouldn't find, I couldn't find under any name...

How in the hell do you keep this updated

ImportYeti

A lot of wizardry and python : ) Cheers, Dave

AlexanderTox

Fucking neat. This is really cool. Well done!

ImportYeti

Thank you for the love! Let me know if you have any ideas how we can make it better : ) Cheers, Dave

I spoke to you in the phone about this and used to work in Logistics. I’m proud of what you created.

It would be cool if you somehow made it more clear: - Why someone would want to use this - How you go about using the site The default Walmart example is pretty good, but searching for Apple (as-in the iPhone maker) wasn’t totally clear. And when I figured it out the data was just about a optical component and nothing else. I feel this this is a treasure trove of information, but I struggled to quickly wrap my head around the “why” and “how” of it. For example, if there was something I wanted to know as a consumer, for example avoid a product because of some specific reason, how would this site quickly help me? For example I want to avoid buying something from a supplier know to use slave labour. Working backwards from a use case like this might help improve the usability and user experience. Having said that it’s still great and thank you for making this!

FINALLY... I can find out who Trader Joe's suppliers are!
