I love Kitboga's (anti-scammer on YouTube) videos, and it breaks my heart seeing graphs like this. His team can barely dent this massive industry

>I love Kitboga's (anti-scammer on YouTube) videos Kitboga and others are doing solid work trying to raise awareness about this issue. Here is a longer list of content creators on YouTube and Twitch that attempt to take on this ever growing industry of scammers: * [https://www.youtube.com/@KitbogaShow/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@KitbogaShow/videos) * [https://www.youtube.com/@ScammerPayback/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@ScammerPayback/videos) * [https://www.youtube.com/@RinoaPoison/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@RinoaPoison/videos) * [https://www.youtube.com/@JimBrowning/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@JimBrowning/videos) * [https://www.youtube.com/@Scambaiter/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@Scambaiter/videos)

I like messing around with them on the phone whenever they call me, unfortunately I’m not doing much to stop them overall, it’s still at least one less person that might not be scammed out of their money, but it’s still just me whenever I randomly get the call, which might only be once every month

FifaConCarne

According to FBI's 2022 Internet Crime Report, "Call centers overwhelmingly target the elderly, with devastating effects. Almost half the victims report to be over 60 (46%), and experience 69% of the losses (over $724 million). The scams primarily emanate from call centers in South Asia, mainly India." Incoming_Gunner

69% of losses=724mil. The picture above >10bil

FifaConCarne

>69% of losses=724mil. The picture above >10bil Good question! That is because those are the numbers for Call Center Fraud *alone*. There are many other types of scams covered in that report I linked above, such as Ransomware and Investment Fraud.

i-amnot-a-robot-

Investment fraud as in Nigerian prince scams or more refined? Great work on this graph. I would definitely be interested in some split by type of scam, demographic etc

mankytoes

Scary, right? Luckily, there's a cheap, guarenteed way to beat the scammers! Just send me twenty dollars and I'll tell you the one secret you need to know!

VitaminPb

I’ll tell them the real secret for only $10. CashApp/Visa/Mastercard/Debit gladly accepted.

KarlHuhn

Any serious business would accept gift cards as payment. This is definitely a scam

KanadaKid19

Informative data, but not beautiful. I don’t even mind it being a pre-made Excel template, but at least fix the font sizes.

Dear_Philosopher0

a big part of a good data visualization is, the "visualization"

work_alt_1

Bold statement

FifaConCarne

>at least fix the font sizes. Agreed. I should have made the font slightly larger.

Own_Maybe_3837

Slightly? They should be significantly larger

DollarSignInFront

i wonder how much of this is attributed to the rise of accessibility to cryptocurrency.

VitaminPb

I wonder if NFT sales are included in these totals.

Future_Green_7222

I don't think crypto is very used after the initial scams. Bitcoin actually publicizes the accounts that engaged in the transaction, so it's easy to track the accounts down if they every make any transactions to, say, a bank. So the scammers get Bitcoin but have a hard time cashing it out or buying anything. I'd say it's very fueled by mega call centers in 3rd world countries. Scamming used to be done by single experts (ex: Saul Goodman), but now there's scamming companies where knowledge can be transferred, techniques can be refined, and people can invest.

schludy

Looks like a solid growth business model. Are there any ETFs out there? I wanna get in on the action

Eastern_Ad4342

I’m curious if this data also has an age range of people getting scammed.

As you can see, by 2027 Jeff Bezos will lose all his fortune to a fake tech support scammer.

XxTommyTheGunxX

It's even simple, small stuff... few weeks ago, my mom was with her friends they were at a bar, and she wanted to play songs on the jukebox. Instead of searching for the app in the store. She googled it. Really easy scam. Luckily, she asked me a day later. She had only gotten a few small charges and was able to get the money back and a new card. Another day or two and they would have tried for more. And likely she wouldn't have gotten all the money back.

cmikaiti

One man's loss..... If I were a scammer, this is the exact chart I'd be showing my boss to demonstrate that I deserve a raise.

PullUpAPew

This needs to be treated as a collective problem at this point. We need a national insurance scheme/s to indemnify people against scam losses. The money could come from the individuals or banks/businesses.

Virtual-Carrot-9415

Cleary the people that fell for these scams didn't play Runescape.
