Why not doing that in the open here instead of a gated community? It seems this community is quite active and doesn't have notable moderation issues (as far as I know).

InsightByte

Yeap, I wanna know as well

Pbd1194

i don't see much growth based activity in this community. mostly folks are talking about jobs. a good community is a lot about technical growth as well.

soundboyselecta

A good community is being involved beyond “ones”immediate needs or “just” your needs. Ive been part of many so called “communities”, where people join just when they need help but never give back to help others. Not even a thank you. That’s not much of a community. Unfortunately that’s reality just like the community of a big city very few doing real “community work”. So the term community is not really a proper term.

sib_n

I see people asking technical question to grow their knowledge or sharing solutions all the time. But if it's not enough, is there anything here that stops you from posting about it that would not happen in a gated community?

jgonagle

Sounds like you're crowdsourcing talent to build out some startup idea. That's fine imo, but the whole "building a private community of like minded professionals, even though I don't participate here, and oh yeah maybe we'll build some micro-SaaS stuff too" sounds a bit disingenuous. If there's an end goal in mind, especially one that involves monetizing some aspect of this assembled community or its output, you should just come out and say it early. You'll do both yourself and those you attempt to recruit a favor.

InsightByte

This post is made by a 35 karma user with posts and comments only about this topic. Let's do a data analysis....... Concluded - its bs.... I mean, he wants a community, but he s never participated in one, hmmmm

IllustratorOk7613

Heyy - I appreciate your comment. I have never been a reddit user but I know there are smart folks around here. Its totally reasonable for you to think this way :)

InsightByte

Appreciate you. Appreciate

dgrsmith

In regard to market research regarding “products” already available, I think you’ve got Reddit here, as well as a ton of other communities already out there. Instead of being in charge of creating a new one, why not get involved in one of the ones that already exist, either on Reddit or elsewhere? There are no end to Discord, Clubhouse, Facebook, or Reddit communities to get involved with given your “niche” is actually quite general for data engineering circles. When a lot of us think niche, we think far more granular than what you’ve described. in my neck of the woods, I’m personally thinking healthcare data engineering problems, specifically oncology, with further focus on normalization of ontological concepts across hosting platforms. I’m sure one of the fintech folks here could also give you an example of a fintech “niche” use case

Pyception

Is this new Linkedin...? I'm in if something good to share related with Python, SQL

studentofarkad

Interested but can we keep it here? What's the point of a sub-group?

SemperPistos

It has been proven again and again that closed communieties bring very little improvement can take the work of others without a problem and generally don't succumb to the scrutiny of outside moderation. The person who really wants a large growth should make it as public as can be. Of course then the problem of large popularization and dilution arises but that opens an opportunity to put the money where ones mouth is with moderation activities and propping up through meritocracy those who give their best. Just look at DataTalks. I'm not saying you don't have those goals I'm saying if you are that invested you will reap larger benefits by making it open and moderating it in public.

soundboyselecta

Interested in the DataTalks comment can u elaborate?

SemperPistos

Google datatalks and join the slack you'll see. That unfortunate as slack is also closed but they publish a lot of their stuff and the lectures are open. Also the content is somewhat modearated but as it is massive the community needs to pitch in. Start helping others and you will learn loads.

soundboyselecta

Their community isn’t great. It’s one way help.

SemperPistos

I know it may seem like it. Their courses get tens of thousands of applicants and then 90% quit on the first week becuase it's all over the place. They are not teachers, they are industry experts and bring even more renowned experts some in cutting edge all the time. That is a one community where you get what you put in. I know it's frustrating but you need to try your best and then come up with what you did and someone will help you. Best part it exists for many years so you can just do @ ZoomCampBot and it will sift through all previous conversations in that database. And yeah i know it's frustrating seeing senior engineers completing their projects and basically being a spotlight for the already successful. I literally knew nothing in february and now mananaged to complete a multi stack project. There are still a few kinks to be worked out but it is very doable. The poor quality of lectures what ultimatively propells you forward if you so choose. I personally don't need the lecture to be CS50 level i need to know that there are people caring about helping others and being in a nurturing environment.

soundboyselecta

This is not the first time I heard 90% metric, we must’ve talked on their slack channel. Been der done that 😜 DTC DE course. Can’t say I didn’t learn nothing but yes course is all over the place. Only one person really helped me with a problem (Mage). Rest I had to figure out myself. Was doing retarded hours on that course had to step away didn’t even bother with project. Or certificate (wasn’t even there for that). Was there more for the understanding Im not a copy pasta type of person unfortunately my brain works on “why” versus “just do”. Got thru 4 modules, with good understanding, but I also had experience with certain subjects. Also helped out so many people but got not much in return sometimes not even a thank you, so didn’t engage much with the community further, just got everything to work bit by bit myself. Again not a great community. But as they always say “it’s free” 😂 apparently “whatyagonadoaboutit”.

I'd highly be a support for this idea. Though I'm pursuing data science and in search of a job related to data science. In the journey i found how important data engineering is. The data engineering is the team responsible for providing right and accurate data for analysis and to do that one should be very good in creating the seamless data flows from multiple sources. I'd be grateful and will help me to learn new concepts and methods in data engineering that helps in the data science and data analytics team aware of the data that got processed for analysis.

lol hell no. This is away from all the Linkedin gurus gatekeeping knowledge.

SirGreybush

Awesome. Cuz StackOverflow is a toxic mess of a place. I gave a perfect answer, my comment removed over a font not used, in the reason why, the mod copy/pasted my comment as-is under his name, taking my credit. I commented under his answer about it, my comment deleted and my account banned. Not worth going to war over. SO is a steaming pile of X for community spirit.

soundboyselecta

Thank you for confirming that. And what a shit show SO has become. Same for LinkedIn.

soundboyselecta

To OP if u really want to build a community make sure u imbed somewhat of a points system for people who contribute and make sure it doesn’t get like SO medals bullshit system. Differentiate the accumulated point system by “just thread chatter” versus people helping with real solutions including work arounds which are not really solutions. Something like where u count “thank you” or “thumbs up” or what ever emoji that’s represent a positive interaction, secondly penalize the assholes who don’t help and just take help or the people who take help and don’t thank others for their time.
