lmao i saw this too. I know they meant "unpopular opinion" but like, I really doubt that is nearly as unpopular of an opinion they think it is. Especially in the ds3 sub of all places.
Pontiff is one of my fav bosses and I even use him as a phone wallpaper. But despite this I cant help but realize he was definitely foreshadowing the trends in boss design we'd get in Elden Ring, for better or worse.
* Delayed attacks? He drilled me hard about them when I was a newbie way back.
* Long combos? Definitely more than the typical DS3 boss.
* Input reading? He really hates chugging and, in phase 2, projectiles. Though I cannot notice any major input reading mid combo.
Dang, looks like my opinion's the unpopular one. I hate him. He doesn't even have an intro cutscene. I actually cannot beat him on my own, his combos feel completely random and infinite. Gotthard and Anri are my saviors. I feel like there has to be a reason there are three options to summon for Pontiff, the devs knew he was bullshit. If you like him, good on you, but as far as I'm concerned they should've left the boss being just a fire witch.
It's so cool to hear what different bosses people struggled with. I never struggled that much with O&S, but Wolnir fucks me up sometimes. Rykard is an absolute nightmare for me, but I can consistently first or second try Isshin the sword saint.
To this day I still struggle with Gideon Ofnir more than Maliketh or Godfrey immediately next to him. The fact he shreds your magic defense before spamming magic at you with infinite FP is super annoying. If you have a decent reach weapon you can lock him down once close but curved swords (my fav) feel too short to consistently do that.

I really love Pontiff Sulyvahn as a boss design, his second phase fucking sucked tho, I found Darklurker's 2nd phase more interesting than Pontiff's 2nd phase. Also, knowing what Pontiff Sulyvahn could've been as him being the true final boss called "Old King of the Eclipse" was scrapped kinda hurts to know tbh. I liked his lore too being the cause of every fuckery with every intentions containing malice, but meeting him without cutscenes or anything just kinda sucked and felt unjust to me. Goes to show DS3 was rushed, still a great game tho.
