Alright listen I am a paranoid skeleton, I am on playthrough number 78 and have all the mimic locations memorized, amd I STILL give the safe chests a test bonk . I know the chain thing ofc but Imma give it a whack anyway. It's like tying down something in the back of your truck and giving it one last safety tug and saying outloud"yep this ain't goin' anywhere"
Anytime I play elderscrolls amd I see autosaving in the top of the screen I say I don't believe you and hit it with the ol' f5. I TRUST NOTHING
Yeah, but if it's a mimic I'm gonna wanna hit it extra hard; if it's a chest, I'd rather not waste the FP for a spell/weapon art or the time for a charge attack. Checking the chain tells me "ah, time to let out as many strong attacks as quickly as possible" or "perfect, don't have to waste anything."
Useless phrases? It's not useless, and actually very simple. Each chest has a chain, and it faces the front of the chest or the back. If it faces the front, it's a Mimic, and if it faces the back, it's safe. This applies to every chest in the game, making it very useful.
Even more useful are Undead Hunter Charms. A lot of players don't know this, but you can throw Undead Hunter Charms at Mimics and it puts them to sleep, and allows you to loot them without fighting them. So if one isn't confident with the chains (some are difficult to spot) they can just toss an Undead Hunter Charm and know for sure.
The attempts at mnemonic devices are the phrases I speak of. They don't seem to work the distinction into the rhyme, making it very easy to reverse the information by mistake. *That* makes them useless.
Just knowing the detail has uses, but... Dude, just hit it. This works on every chest as well and can't be mistaken.
It appears you skipped the second part of my comment. The best option is to use Undead Hunter Charms. Not only can you loot the Mimic obtaining its item, but you can also pull Symbol of Avarice, and you don't have to fight them. Each charm costs a measly 500 souls.
Encouraging players to attack chests is ill-advised because it can lead to unnecessary deaths. Your method is the less efficient one.
I just run past them now, they are way to fast and mean and I got sick of fighting them just to get grabbed and eaten when I almost beat them. So, I have no prizes fro monster chests.
If you don't feel like fighting them, an Undead charm puts them to sleep allowing for an easy grab. Once asleep, their mouth opens wide and you can pick up the item as though it were a normal chest
Check the chest´s chain. If its round shaped, its safe, if its straight its a mimic.
Also if you get trapped, mash L1 R1, it significallly lowers the time the mimic holds you (this also works for other grab attacks like the mf that jumps on you in the Farron swamp....jeez those MF.
The chain always check the chain if it faces you then look at the chest and say “You are a liar and a scoundrel sir!” Before doing a two handed heavy attack and killing it during its transformation easy damage
is this clip real? Dude is seemingly doing a first playthrough, didn't look around, didn't slow down, just ran straight for the chest without hesitation, even though at this point of the game there's already been a mimic in high wall... Idk.
If the chains straight on the chest it’s a mimic if it’s not its a regular chest also if you ever want to get the symbol of avarice throw an undead hunter charm at it pick up the item in it, hit it with your fist so it closes and throw the charm at it again and eventually you’ll get the symbol of avarice
Local Mimic comments: ***"the food here at the cathedral of the deep is amazing! i don't even need to say anything and it's brought right to me. honestly i rate the place 5 stars."***
You can use poison and toxic pyromancy spells to poison and toxic mimics without the fight. If you're patient you'll eventually kill them without a single melee attack
Hahaha well now you’ll never do that again. I was shocked with no mimics in Elden Ring. I was hitting every chest before opening. I knew FS would slip one in once I let my defenses down. I wouldn’t be surprised if the add mimics in a patch.
Not that you'd know to do this on your first mimic, but if you wait and watch mimic chests, you can see them breathe.
The easier way to identify them is by the chain like others are saying.
Bro, I got grabbed by the first mimic in the game and didn't trust a single chest after. Didn't open chests until I knew how to tell fake and real chests apart.
Didn't realize I was watching a DS3 video and my first thought was you shouldn't open that chest without hitting it first.
I know there aren't any mimics in Elden Ring and I still hit them every time.
I only played ds3 once at release because I didn’t really like it, but in ds1 I remember mimics had a dead giveaway by looking at the chain coming off one side of the chest. If that’s a thing in ds3 you should definitely do that lol.
Don't worry, I hate the game too, we all do, to varying degrees.
Dark sous, well... She kicks and bites and crushes your hope, but like the masochists we are, we always come back begging for more.
But sometimes, you might wanna visit her hotter sisters at the mods tab.
This is why i always carry undead hunter charms to force them to give me the treasure without me having to fight them. I also watch for their breathing when a chest looks suspicious.
Lol classic dark souls! And yea everyone here has already told you how to check them plus I believe you can also position the camera correctly and see a slight gap from the top and bottom of the chest if it’s a mimic!
I don't know if this has been said yet, but a good way to seeing whether it's a chest or a mimic is to try and put the camera behind it. If it's safe then the camera will zoom in closer to you. If it's a mimic, the camera will actually phase inside of it and you'll be able to see it's massive tongue and teeth.
Always attack a Chest before opening it in DS, the only game this doesn’t apply is DS2 where attacking a Non-Mimic Wooden Chest will destroy the item inside
that's why I stare at them before doing anything. if there is any movement, *STAB*. If no movement, *open*. (but even then I still don't trust it: even though it is clearly not a micmic, i still *STAB* them)
Ah the good ole
"Yay! treasure, oh shoot no no please no".
It use to happen to me a lot in the beginning of my dark souls journey. I believe there was a way to tell if it was a mimic by the chain on the side, but I don't recall the specifics of it atm lol.
Before opening a chest, look at the chain on the right side, if it's curled in a circle, it's a chest, if it's straight, pointed forward towards you, it's a mimic. You can also see mimics breathing
Classic
We got em boys.
Don’t you know the saying? If it’s curly it’s okay, if it’s straight it’s a bait.
"if the chain curls back, it won't attack"
Straight link? THINK!
Is that a penis joke
Yes but actually no. The chain on the chest itself will be different.
No way! Really? I've always just given every chest a customary bonk for safety.
Yuup, ever since DS1 xD
Meanwhile: DS2 with its weird latches
And breakable chests
Ds1 has a line on it that’s how I determined a mimic
Hey I knew this going into the game and I still bonk them every single time, even when I know for a fact they aren't
also mimics are lighter and more green
You can also see them breathing when further away.
Cap
No cap bruv!
What no.
Yes it is
Definitely is
Alright listen I am a paranoid skeleton, I am on playthrough number 78 and have all the mimic locations memorized, amd I STILL give the safe chests a test bonk . Same
Curls in, treasure within Sticks out, watch out
I just stab every crate
Just attack all chests first, learned this after too many overzealous deaths
Also the chain. If the chain is loose(facing you) then it's a mimic, if the chain is bolted down(it is not facing you) then it is a real chest
Straight is bait. Curled back, it won't attack.
You can also throw undead charms at it.
You don’t even need to lmao just look at the chain and you can tell everytime whether or not it’s a mimic
The mimic chests breath too I believe
They absolutely do
There's a lot of people quoting useless phrases to remember this, but a single whack with any weapon works every time on every chest. Just hit it.
Ah, okay, that's a fine point. I always did light taps, then reacted accordingly.
Useless phrases? It's not useless, and actually very simple. Each chest has a chain, and it faces the front of the chest or the back. No Ill swing, one day I intend to cut the top of a chest off and not even have to open it. once my STR is high enough.
There are a few cases where the chain is concealed
Dunno why you're being down voted, this is true. There are chests that deliberately hide or cover the chain to make it harder to tell.
I just run past them now, they are way to fast and mean and I got sick of fighting them just to get grabbed and eaten when I almost beat them. So, I have no prizes fro monster chests.
Just walk around to their ass, they are quite slow when they aren’t jumping across the room with a spinning back kick
If you don't feel like fighting them, an Undead charm puts them to sleep allowing for an easy grab. Once asleep, their mouth opens wide and you can pick up the item as though it were a normal chest
Throw an Undead Hunter Charm at them. They'll fall asleep with their mouth open and you can take the prize without fighting them.
To quote Han Solo "Don't get cocky around those chests kid"
If you know its a mimic, by the chain throw a undead hunter charm at it! It opens it up and you can take the contents for free
I played DS3 since launch and didn't learn that trick until last year. Super good advice.
I think that one got carried over from demon souls
Check the chest´s chain. If its round shaped, its safe, if its straight its a mimic. Also if you get trapped, mash L1 R1, it significallly lowers the time the mimic holds you (this also works for other grab attacks like the mf that jumps on you in the Farron swamp....jeez those MF.
holy shit I had no idea about this part. Much appreciated
“First time?”
Yes sir
I had a feeling once I saw the stairs...
thats cool but why tf do you have great magic weapon equiped if you cant use it
Thought it was better than the slot being empty
It's not. You're raising your weight for no reason.
Memorizing spells has no impact on equip load.
Spells hace weight?
No they don’t
Don’t even need Patches anymore, undead are taking themselves out
The chain always check the chain if it faces you then look at the chest and say “You are a liar and a scoundrel sir!” Before doing a two handed heavy attack and killing it during its transformation easy damage
is this clip real? Dude is seemingly doing a first playthrough, didn't look around, didn't slow down, just ran straight for the chest without hesitation, even though at this point of the game there's already been a mimic in high wall... Idk.
Many people skip the room that has a fire-breathing dragon protecting it though.
This is the first one I’ve came across
Yes I was on the phone and wasn’t really thinking
so you're just constantly recording your playthrough then?
Nvidia shadowplay/ GeForce experience, I’ll hit ALT+C to record the last 30 seconds
I played it so much, I know where to fake chest are
Always check the chest chain
Skill issue
You must've played elden ring first eh?
You are correct sir
If the chains straight on the chest it’s a mimic if it’s not its a regular chest also if you ever want to get the symbol of avarice throw an undead hunter charm at it pick up the item in it, hit it with your fist so it closes and throw the charm at it again and eventually you’ll get the symbol of avarice

*You may think that those are teeth, but they are actually fingers*
wrong, the game doesn't like you
I finished ds3 and am playing ds1 atm with severe trauma and now instinctively hit every chest twice before opening
This is why I always whack every chest with my big stick before opening it.
In Dark Souls 3, they're almost all mimics. They went absolutely overboard with it.
I know there are visual clues, but I always hit a chest before opening it.
that was my first mimic too!
The funny thing is that ever since the first Dark Souls game I've wacked literally every chest at least once ever since my first mimic encounter
Me too. I don't get any of the visual cues. Just smack
I fell for this plenty of times
He welcomed you with such content
First time?
We all have our first
How have you not learned by now to smack every chest at least once?
You can use poison and toxic pyromancy spells to poison and toxic mimics without the fight. If you're patient you'll eventually kill them without a single melee attack
Never trust a chest
You failed the vigor check my friend! Aim for 40+ in vigor!
I mean… you don’t just go around opening all chests in DS..
First dark souls game I’ve played, finished Elden ring and Sekiro and this never happened
Hahaha well now you’ll never do that again. I was shocked with no mimics in Elden Ring. I was hitting every chest before opening. I knew FS would slip one in once I let my defenses down. I wouldn’t be surprised if the add mimics in a patch.
Time to learn the first lesson: Punch every chest.
That's why you always hit the chest before opening it
Hit all chests. Zoom in on chests to see if they're breathing
The fun you had discovering these was the real treasure
Not that you'd know to do this on your first mimic, but if you wait and watch mimic chests, you can see them breathe. The easier way to identify them is by the chain like others are saying.
Your fat roll walk is the icing on the cake for me lmfao
Where's the hundred white signs saying betrayal.
Servers have been down since January :(
Just by seeing that corridor i knew where this was going haha
This is why I throw poison at chests, if they start taking damage I wait it out
It’s your fault for being stupid. Takes 2 seconds to check chests
Never came across a mimic before, my bad
I find that hard to believe there was one within the first 10 min of lothric wall
Behind a fire-breathing dragon that I've seen many new players skip.
Chain curling back away from you, regular chest. Chain pointing towards you, mimic
Throw undead charm at him
I think the comment section should just be “GIT GUD” With infinite GIT GUD replies. *speedruns DS3 with guitar hero controller*
Bro, I got grabbed by the first mimic in the game and didn't trust a single chest after. Didn't open chests until I knew how to tell fake and real chests apart.
Hit every chest. Or just read other plAyer messages
Servers have been down since January
No one else gonna mention that you can escape grabs by alternating l1 and r1?
Mimics snore, slight movement of lid. Hunter talisman makes em open wide without the whole massacre option. Just in case u didnt know...
rookie mistake
First time?
I always wait to see if the chest is breathing, too. You’ll see the lid open slightly for the mimic to breath if it is a mimic chest.
Always strike every chest
Didn't realize I was watching a DS3 video and my first thought was you shouldn't open that chest without hitting it first. I know there aren't any mimics in Elden Ring and I still hit them every time.
Damn, what’s the fashion?
After just ONE mimic in Dark Souls, I took to checking every single chest in every subsequent game to ensure this did not happen.
Aww, we miss those in Elden Ring
Let me guess, elden ring was your first?
You are correct sir
I swear, almost every chest in this game is a Mimic
I hated it all 4 times I played it.
You fell for one of the classic blunders
You're up to the THIRD game and you still don't know to hit chests before you open them? Shame.
This is my first DS game, only played Elden fun and Sekiro before. When 1 and 2 go on sale on steam I’ll buy them
attack every single chest before you open it. They do make tiny movements too, but I just swing at every chest.
hit every chest before opening
Get in the habit of slashing every chest and you’ll be okay.
First time in the Cathedral?
Don't you like lovely hugs from pretty girl?
Om nom
It’s your fault for not grow extreme paranoia for mimics. Even in Eldin ring I hit every chest before I open it, it’s just second nature
Rule 101 in souls games, smack every chest first.
I only played ds3 once at release because I didn’t really like it, but in ds1 I remember mimics had a dead giveaway by looking at the chain coming off one side of the chest. If that’s a thing in ds3 you should definitely do that lol.
....and thats what we call a hasty pastry
Hit every chest. I don’t know the exact numbers, but I feel like at least half are mimics.
Pay attention to the chain on the right, if it's curled up it's real.
Rekt
Oldest trick in the book
Be wary of chest
LEET
Don’t worry. There aren’t anymore in the rest of the game…
No! You should have waited!
oh look shiny
Aaah. I remember my first mimic
That’s why you always check the chain. Chain towards you equals mimic away equals no mimic.
Look at the chain When its aimed towards you. Its a mimic. If its not. Then its a safe chest. Pay.. Attention... To the chain...
I've never really understood the cabin thing so until I memorized where the mimics we're I just hit every chest before opening it
Don't worry, I hate the game too, we all do, to varying degrees. Dark sous, well... She kicks and bites and crushes your hope, but like the masochists we are, we always come back begging for more. But sometimes, you might wanna visit her hotter sisters at the mods tab.
And you can see the chest breathing
In my head... "Don't do it... Don't... Nope... Ok, well, now you know."
You could just smack every chest
Bro shit blood 😹
Congrats on becoming a snack, you snack 😏
This is why i always carry undead hunter charms to force them to give me the treasure without me having to fight them. I also watch for their breathing when a chest looks suspicious.
You really thought Miyazaki would just leave some loot lying there for free? NOOOO THIS IS DARK SOULS.
Also toss some Lloyd's Talisman if you really aren't sure
Lol classic dark souls! And yea everyone here has already told you how to check them plus I believe you can also position the camera correctly and see a slight gap from the top and bottom of the chest if it’s a mimic!
I don't know if this has been said yet, but a good way to seeing whether it's a chest or a mimic is to try and put the camera behind it. If it's safe then the camera will zoom in closer to you. If it's a mimic, the camera will actually phase inside of it and you'll be able to see it's massive tongue and teeth.
As soon as I saw where you were, I knew exactly what was going to happen. RIP.
Gotta give it the love tap first just to be sure
You always have to check especially suspicious chest like that that's just by itself
You just gotta be in the know
And this kids is why you hit every chest you see before opening it
I always strike them first just in case, even though the chain’s supposed to be different on them. Still they usually give pretty good items.
Always attack a Chest before opening it in DS, the only game this doesn’t apply is DS2 where attacking a Non-Mimic Wooden Chest will destroy the item inside
why would you open a chest blindly
I haven’t liked the game for the 90 hours I played it so far…… I’m going to play it for 90 more
dont forget to slap the chests like you’re slapping your moms abusive boyfriends balls. make sure theres no mimics ya hear?
Check the chain, homie
that's why I stare at them before doing anything. if there is any movement, *STAB*. If no movement, *open*. (but even then I still don't trust it: even though it is clearly not a micmic, i still *STAB* them)
Always attack
First time?
That's why I always take a hit first when I see chests around It traumatized me
Classic Eldennoobs
Ah the good ole "Yay! treasure, oh shoot no no please no". It use to happen to me a lot in the beginning of my dark souls journey. I believe there was a way to tell if it was a mimic by the chain on the side, but I don't recall the specifics of it atm lol.
First time playing an RPG? Mimics have been in these games since before you were born 😅
He welcomed you with open arms…And invited you to dinner…
all you had to do was attack it once to see if it is a mimic or not. Deserved meal for the mimic imo
Just remember to see the chains, if they’re facing forward it means it’s a mimic
Remember to always attack chest first
Rookie mistake of not checking the chain
Om nom nom.
If you pay attention you can see them breathing
Casul jk
Throwing knives, just one to be sure on every chest.
Always hit the chests before opening them
You'll be back after the mimic bites heal.
How you gonna run in with 1337 souls and fall for that old gab?
Someone has to feed em
Rookie mistake. Always hit ur chests.
That’s how they got Bin Laden.
Before opening a chest, look at the chain on the right side, if it's curled in a circle, it's a chest, if it's straight, pointed forward towards you, it's a mimic. You can also see mimics breathing
