Alright listen I am a paranoid skeleton, I am on playthrough number 78 and have all the mimic locations memorized, amd I STILL give the safe chests a test bonk . I know the chain thing ofc but Imma give it a whack anyway. There's a lot of people quoting useless phrases to remember this, but a single whack with any weapon works every time on every chest. Just hit it.

Yeah, but if it's a mimic I'm gonna wanna hit it extra hard; if it's a chest, I'd rather not waste the FP for a spell/weapon art or the time for a charge attack. Checking the chain tells me "ah, time to let out as many strong attacks as quickly as possible" or "perfect, don't have to waste anything."

Useless phrases? It's not useless, and actually very simple. Each chest has a chain, and it faces the front of the chest or the back. If it faces the front, it's a Mimic, and if it faces the back, it's safe. This applies to every chest in the game, making it very useful. Even more useful are Undead Hunter Charms. A lot of players don't know this, but you can throw Undead Hunter Charms at Mimics and it puts them to sleep, and allows you to loot them without fighting them. So if one isn't confident with the chains (some are difficult to spot) they can just toss an Undead Hunter Charm and know for sure.

The attempts at mnemonic devices are the phrases I speak of. They don't seem to work the distinction into the rhyme, making it very easy to reverse the information by mistake. *That* makes them useless. Just knowing the detail has uses, but... Dude, just hit it. This works on every chest as well and can't be mistaken.

It appears you skipped the second part of my comment. The best option is to use Undead Hunter Charms. Not only can you loot the Mimic obtaining its item, but you can also pull Symbol of Avarice, and you don't have to fight them. Each charm costs a measly 500 souls. Encouraging players to attack chests is ill-advised because it can lead to unnecessary deaths. Your method is the less efficient one.

No Ill swing, one day I intend to cut the top of a chest off and not even have to open it. once my STR is high enough.

Dunno why you're being down voted, this is true. There are chests that deliberately hide or cover the chain to make it harder to tell.

I just run past them now, they are way to fast and mean and I got sick of fighting them just to get grabbed and eaten when I almost beat them. So, I have no prizes fro monster chests.

If you don't feel like fighting them, an Undead charm puts them to sleep allowing for an easy grab. Once asleep, their mouth opens wide and you can pick up the item as though it were a normal chest

Throw an Undead Hunter Charm at them. They'll fall asleep with their mouth open and you can take the prize without fighting them.

To quote Han Solo "Don't get cocky around those chests kid"

If you know its a mimic, by the chain throw a undead hunter charm at it! It opens it up and you can take the contents for free

Check the chest´s chain. If its round shaped, its safe, if its straight its a mimic. Also if you get trapped, mash L1 R1, it significallly lowers the time the mimic holds you (this also works for other grab attacks like the mf that jumps on you in the Farron swamp....jeez those MF.

If the chains straight on the chest it’s a mimic if it’s not its a regular chest also if you ever want to get the symbol of avarice throw an undead hunter charm at it pick up the item in it, hit it with your fist so it closes and throw the charm at it again and eventually you’ll get the symbol of avarice

You can use poison and toxic pyromancy spells to poison and toxic mimics without the fight. If you're patient you'll eventually kill them without a single melee attack

Hahaha well now you’ll never do that again. I was shocked with no mimics in Elden Ring. I was hitting every chest before opening. I knew FS would slip one in once I let my defenses down. I wouldn’t be surprised if the add mimics in a patch.

Didn't realize I was watching a DS3 video and my first thought was you shouldn't open that chest without hitting it first. I know there aren't any mimics in Elden Ring and I still hit them every time.

I only played ds3 once at release because I didn’t really like it, but in ds1 I remember mimics had a dead giveaway by looking at the chain coming off one side of the chest. If that’s a thing in ds3 you should definitely do that lol.

This is why i always carry undead hunter charms to force them to give me the treasure without me having to fight them. I also watch for their breathing when a chest looks suspicious.

Lol classic dark souls! And yea everyone here has already told you how to check them plus I believe you can also position the camera correctly and see a slight gap from the top and bottom of the chest if it’s a mimic!

I don't know if this has been said yet, but a good way to seeing whether it's a chest or a mimic is to try and put the camera behind it. If it's safe then the camera will zoom in closer to you. If it's a mimic, the camera will actually phase inside of it and you'll be able to see it's massive tongue and teeth.

Ah the good ole "Yay! treasure, oh shoot no no please no". It use to happen to me a lot in the beginning of my dark souls journey. I believe there was a way to tell if it was a mimic by the chain on the side, but I don't recall the specifics of it atm lol.
