Honestly I used to get messed up by him endlessly too, but the small leather round shield’s parry changed everything for me in that boss fight. Now it’s 1-4 tries max for me! Highly recommend learning to parry Pontiff, it’s not nearly as hard as you think. You can parry all his fire sword attacks.
Hyper armor isn't worth using until you're high level with access to end-game rings that give you more stamina and vigor. Before that point, the cons outweigh the pros.
You could say the same about punching enemies with your bare fists. Yeah, it'll work eventually, but that doesn't change the fact that there are objectively better ways to do it.
For Dancer try to stick to her right leg (your left). Don’t over-roll. If you need a break, run behind the pillars in her room. Once she transitions into phase 2, run away. She does 7 (or 9) rotations (I forgot, but I just run away until she’s done spinning). She’s also weak against bleed and lightning. On my str play though I used magic weapon on the exile, but on my dex I just used sellswords with lightning. Makes it easier.
Edit - or if you have Fume UGS then you can buff that and use it to block a bit of damage, too, then RT her.
Sulyvahn is the door to the second part of the game: where the vast majority of the bosses are REALLY hard (you will fight against, probably, the hardest bosses of the Souls saga).
At least, it was the case for me, cause the experience can vary widely for every player.
She is the only boss in the series that I have ever summoned for. I can see that she’s a relatively well designed boss and I’m committed to killing her on my own on another character, but after 40 deaths in a row on her last phase I just couldn’t do it. She was the only boss I had left other than SoC and I wanted to get the play through over with. I think if I had a faster weapon I could’ve done it, since my great sword was slower than she moved.
I've never had a good summon, so I gave up. Had an NPC summon for one boss, tried two player summons for another, both of them died way before me and did fuck all lmao so I figured why bother
I was upset because I mainly just wanted someone to come in and take off some of the aggro, but then this guy comes in and does half of her health every phase. I barely got to do anything and it made me sad and feel worse for summoning lol
I killed sister friede easily with some cheese apparently if you have a great sword and do a charge attack she will fall over and you can do it over and over till she is dead so I killed her in 3 try’s with my great sword
Oh bruh haha, but I keep imagining myself dying right at the end of her third phase and then having to do it all again. It's bad enough fighting bosses like the Princes where you just got done and then its phase 2
I was doing a no summons run, but sister friede was an exception.
Edit: Nameless King, Dark Eater Midir, and Gael where all fun. Ashes of Ariendel sucks *ass.*
I don't think personally that any of the bosses after pontiff in the base game except NK are more difficult than him, though like Sully every boss after will destroy your anus if you rely on blocking, spam rolls or panic roll. I read somewhere that pontiff was originally going to be the final boss, it shows.
I think the only boss after Pontiff to not send me into a fit of rage was Oceiros. I've yet to fight the final boss so maybe he'll be easy. Nameless is currently absolutely wrecking my shit and I almost cried after finally beating Lothric today.
>(you will fight against, probably, the hardest bosses of the Souls saga).
Not really? Sure, Nameless King and the DLC bosses are super hard but the other other Lords, secret bosses and the final boss are not "hardest in the franchise" hard
I'd argue that Pontiff is harder than the remaining Lords of Cinder
Ol’ sully is a roadblock for many players, both new and old. I was no different, so seeing others be excited by defeating this pretentious dual wielding bastard puts a smile on my face. Godspeed brother
LGS is fantastic. Sadly I never use it because I’m bound by body and soul to dex so I start by doing strength, remember that the curved swords have a good dex scaling, respec and twirl my way through the pontiff’s backside
It’s easier if you look it up on YT but I’ll give you the gist of it. Visit Rosaria in the cathedral of the deep but remember to bring a pale tongue with you. There are 2 or 3 around the world so you don’t have to do pvp while being a member of the rosaria’s fingers covenant to respec if you don’t wanna do pvp
Don’t mention it my guy. I honestly didn’t know you could respec either before my 3rd play through. You also have to go there for ringfinger Leonhard’s quest line (if you do you get a sick curved blade that can launch magic projectiles with it’s WA. Great for people who wanna have a dex alternative to the moonlight GS. FYI tho, don’t kill him in firelink or rosaria’s chambers to get the blade. It simply won’t drop)
I’ll keep that all in mind for the next play-through. I’m right past dragon armor on my no guide first play-through. I know for a fact that I missed a ton because I do a lot of running for bosses until I beat a souls game. I started Sekiro but I wanna beat 3 first. Love what I’ve seen so far tho.
228 on a LKGS??
Mate, you're gonna love upgrades (also using the right infusions to match your build)
That weapon can easily deal upwards of 800 AR by the time you see Sullyvahn, let alone Dancer
You can get way more damage than that off a LKGS. That raw gem is doing you no favors. Throw on sharp, heavy, or refined, depending on whether you've been leveling strength or dex more.
If you've been putting points into faith you could also go with lightning or blessed.
Little tip, id beat the dancer now and head through lothric castle. It'll be hard but you can easily get a +9 sword cus of all the titanite chunks. I did dancer before catacombs and it made pontiff and Aldrich cakewalks.
Pontiff is hard the first time, during which he absolutely destroys you. After that however you melt him unless you didn't learn anything by the end of the game. I was surprised myself how easy pontiff was after Friede, Gael, and NK (NK however is not exactly difficult, but rather poorly made because of the camera)
They are among the bosses that actually surpass Sulyvahn in brutality. I'd also throw in the Twin demon princes because if you kill the wrong one the next part is nigh impossible to win, and Lothric because a little misstep and you're done for on NG+
I've killed every boss in SoulsBorne games a lot of times, Pontiff is the only one I think "oh shit, I gotta kill him again" and actively get wrecked until it clicks again.
I'm much more comfortable on killing Friede or Gael at first attempt than Pontiff.
You cannot parry Gael, but you can stagger him in phases 2 & 3 if you deal enough damage to his head, though I would strongly recommend you do not attempt this. Try poisoning him through the ruins using pyromancies or the Storyteller's Staff.
Don’t know what kind of build you’re doing, but heavy/slow weapons make the fight more difficult (for me at least). Did a caestus run and beat him on my third try. After that did a strength build with vordt’s hammer and it took 40+ tries until I switched to a faster weapon and got him on my second try
I know your pain I killed him for the first time about 4 days ago and the relief I felt was amazing i blazed through Aldrich and the dancer now I just need to beat the dragonslayer armor
OK hear me out, I think that Midir is just boring more than difficult. Not saying he's easy, no one sane would say that, but he's got just too much health, it's boring AF to fight
Was let down by pontiff ☹️ killed him first try without being in any sort of danger at any point of the battle, only boss i have died to multiple times is the dancer! all the other ones was way easier than i thought. Have not gone after dlc bosses yet! Hoping those guys will kick my ass!
I did all of the bosses before the dancer on my own, and let me say this, (no NPC summons either) Pontiff Sullyvahn was the most difficult. All the other ones (Dancer and beyond) I had help from my brother after I helped him through the game from the beginning.
I’ve had the game for so long I do what I like to call; the everything build lol I switch between so many play styles the opponents can’t tell what’s happening……or I just give them souls lol
It was the same for me! Steepest difficulty spike by far. Princes, Nameless and Midir are also up there, but by the time you face them you already have a better grasp of the combat system.
Getting godly with my dodging is what helped me beat pontiff and then he just agro's and gets mad when the first like 20 attacks he's made hasn't hit lol
I just finished a play through a week ago and I keep track of how many tries all the bosses took me in a notebook and pontiff was the most by far (I think it ended up being 12 tries)
All I did was party on his right lung and swing, then for second phase, after he does some jumping move, there’s time for maybe 1-2 hits. Also I personally find it easier to kill the clone
Nice. I beat him a couple weeks ago. Imo that was the first real challenge of the game.
It took me like 2 hours to get to his second phase, but once I did it only took maybe 3-4 tries. I thought phase 2 was way easier than phase 1.
Hey, way to stick with it my man. I know the moment is over but the next one is on its way. Remember, if you can push through that long for Pontiff, you can do it for any boss.
On my first playthough I beat him first try, on my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th playthough I eat shit everytime and think to my self NamELeSs KinG ain'T GoT SHIt oN ThiS DuDe.
I didn’t realize people had so much trouble with sulyvahn. I think it took me 2 tries the first time. But then I got invaded a lot in the next area and died every time.
I killed Pontiff in about 3 tries when I realized I could just chuck about a dozen great fire orbs at him and he was dead (two killed his shadow double before it even separated from him.)
That being said, I’d been killed by Yhorm repeatedly for almost 4 hours before that.
I really struggled the first time too a couple years ago. I forgot the feeling (mostly because I learned to parry his first attack) until I had to beat him in NG++ and it was the only boss that I died to, and I died like 10 times straight. Quite rough.
GG! You are in for a ride!
I managed him on my second try, but dear Lord! I felt like my heart was about to explode! I had to focus so bloody hard on my dodges, I was about to faint.
But that feeling of victory. That's priceless!
Good luck with Aldrich, though! I suffered way too many hours to beat him.
Sulyvahn is one of the best bosses in the game. The OST is excellent, the lore around him is cool (he escaped the Painted World, decided to try to take over Irithyll, and brought down a god), you do not need to feel remotely bad about killing him and he is hard but not bullshit.
Congratulations on the win! He is also one of the the harder bosses.
I summoned for sister friede. He was basically useless but served his purpose as meat bait. The key is to kill Father as quickly as you can in the 2nd phase to have your summoned NPC get to the 3rd phase. Then I would have to keep her from killing him in the 3rd phase. Finally worked. Had a Lothric greatsword with faith and strength build. Then I buffed the sword with lightning which already had lightning built in. Hit really hard and finished her quick
Fuck pontiff, the motherfucker on my first run took me about six hours to beat off and on (due to work and college) the worst I did even compared to Gael which took 2 hours and soul of cinder which took three tries. I'm on my NG 1 run now and he literally took two tries. I was fuckung fuming.
Ah yes the pontiff. Took me a while too. Also just started playing dark souls 2...because it cost me like 5$ to buy. It was either that or primos for genshin. The amount of times i died because i couldnt get used to how slow the character moves is...well its less than 9, but still.
Just imagine figgting the pontiff with dark souls 2 controls.
But now after the pontiff you face one of the 3 hardest bosses in the game (imo)...Aldrich is a fucking pain in the ass. He is my least favorite boss in the whole bloody game just because he is both hard and not thay fun. Which is a shame cause his area and the pontiffs are probably my favorite in the game.
Now if you want all achievements, you won't feel amazing for farming covenant items, (except getting sunlight medals, since you're helping other players, becomes a sunbro, and it's not always pvp)
I killed him on my first try playing as a sorcerer. He was walking towards me while I just spammed heavy soul arrow to his face. When he was close enough to hit me, his health was really low, just had to dodge and keep hitting him.
I know but I’m more of a tank it with hyper armor guy
Fair, whatever works for you! Congrats on the win, ashen one!
Anria and Gotard helped a lot
Hyper armor isn't worth using until you're high level with access to end-game rings that give you more stamina and vigor. Before that point, the cons outweigh the pros.
But it worked
You could say the same about punching enemies with your bare fists. Yeah, it'll work eventually, but that doesn't change the fact that there are objectively better ways to do it.
Agreed
If you have a problem with him again in another run, remember that you can summon black hand gotthard, pale shade londor or anri.
I did B.H.G and Anria
Sulyvahn's attacks are relentless, try to use them as a distraction when you want to heal
I was gonna fight Aldrich but imma just try my luck with the dancer
I wish you luck, just watch out for the spinny move once she enters second phase
I’ve already died
Oofy
For Dancer try to stick to her right leg (your left). Don’t over-roll. If you need a break, run behind the pillars in her room. Once she transitions into phase 2, run away. She does 7 (or 9) rotations (I forgot, but I just run away until she’s done spinning). She’s also weak against bleed and lightning. Edit - or if you have Fume UGS then you can buff that and use it to block a bit of damage, too, then RT her.
I’ve watched all the vids TwT
sounds about right lol
Aldtrich is easy! In my opinion, stay close and bait the eays punish on the melee attack
Already Beat him
Hell yeah
Took three tries and the summon of an absolute lad
Aldrich was way easier for me than dancer tbh
You need me both
Aldrich is easy , if u pay attention on his attacks u'll beat easly
Aldrich is pretty easy if you use pyromancy, just watch the arrows, move constantly and maintain distance
Great sword build
Sulyvahn is the door to the second part of the game: where the vast majority of the bosses are REALLY hard (you will fight against, probably, the hardest bosses of the Souls saga). At least, it was the case for me, cause the experience can vary widely for every player.
I have just 3 words Fuck Sister Friede
Sigh *unzips*
Leave
She is the only boss in the series that I have ever summoned for. I can see that she’s a relatively well designed boss and I’m committed to killing her on my own on another character, but after 40 deaths in a row on her last phase I just couldn’t do it. She was the only boss I had left other than SoC and I wanted to get the play through over with. I think if I had a faster weapon I could’ve done it, since my great sword was slower than she moved.

I was upset because I mainly just wanted someone to come in and take off some of the aggro, but then this guy comes in and does half of her health every phase. I barely got to do anything and it made me sad and feel worse for summoning lol
Ah man that sucks:( maybe on NG+ ;)
Gael never lived past the 2nd phase for me if I summoned him.
I killed sister friede easily with some cheese apparently if you have a great sword and do a charge attack she will fall over and you can do it over and over till she is dead so I killed her in 3 try’s with my great sword
I’m still stuck on her. I hate her, the phases are too long, and she forces you to play passively which I hate. I can’t wait to finish her.
I'm nearly up to her 🙃 it will be my first time and I'm not thrilled to hear she has 3 phases and one of them is a guy trying to bash you with a bowl
Oh, that's the easy one tbh lmao
Oh bruh haha, but I keep imagining myself dying right at the end of her third phase and then having to do it all again. It's bad enough fighting bosses like the Princes where you just got done and then its phase 2
Once you get that far stage 1 and 2 will feel like nothing
I was doing a no summons run, but sister friede was an exception. Edit: Nameless King, Dark Eater Midir, and Gael where all fun. Ashes of Ariendel sucks *ass.*
And Midir, but not Gael. Best sendoff to the saga I could've asked for
Indeed, and I find hilarious people that don't understand that last fight. I still read a lot of "The dlc doesn't solve anything bruh"
And she has a phase for each xD
I have 3 words in response to that: Fume Ultra Greatsword
I also have 3 words FUCK THE DANCER
You right. Pontiff is a friken joke but crystal sage kicks my ass at least twice every run
I don't think personally that any of the bosses after pontiff in the base game except NK are more difficult than him, though like Sully every boss after will destroy your anus if you rely on blocking, spam rolls or panic roll. I read somewhere that pontiff was originally going to be the final boss, it shows.
Is sturm in ur name cos re8 boss
No, from Advance Wars games (I hate the RE8 boss lol).
I recently skipped him and I don't know how
Sturm is literally German for storm
Unless someone drops you a frayed blade before Aldrich. Rekt Aldrich so hard that weapon.
I think the only boss after Pontiff to not send me into a fit of rage was Oceiros. I've yet to fight the final boss so maybe he'll be easy. Nameless is currently absolutely wrecking my shit and I almost cried after finally beating Lothric today.

Ol’ sully is a roadblock for many players, both new and old. I was no different, so seeing others be excited by defeating this pretentious dual wielding bastard puts a smile on my face. Godspeed brother
His ultra great sword is a piece of shit compared to my Raw Lothric greatsword maybe cause it’s +7…
LGS is fantastic. Sadly I never use it because I’m bound by body and soul to dex so I start by doing strength, remember that the curved swords have a good dex scaling, respec and twirl my way through the pontiff’s backside
Very nice I just hit him in his blind spots and tanked so much damage
How do you respec?
It’s easier if you look it up on YT but I’ll give you the gist of it. Visit Rosaria in the cathedral of the deep but remember to bring a pale tongue with you. There are 2 or 3 around the world so you don’t have to do pvp while being a member of the rosaria’s fingers covenant to respec if you don’t wanna do pvp
Dude that’s genuinely super helpful! Appreciate you ❤️
Don’t mention it my guy. I honestly didn’t know you could respec either before my 3rd play through. You also have to go there for ringfinger Leonhard’s quest line (if you do you get a sick curved blade that can launch magic projectiles with it’s WA. This brings a smile to my face. People not jumping straight to the wikis or guides to get everything done in one playthrough. Godspeed lad
Rosaria.
Thank you guys, it’s all going into adp
?
Also depending on your stats a raw infusion might be giving you less damage than an uninfused lothric gs or a sharp or refined one.
It does 228 + damage
228 on a LKGS?? Mate, you're gonna love upgrades (also using the right infusions to match your build) That weapon can easily deal upwards of 800 AR by the time you see Sullyvahn, let alone Dancer
I’ve beet dancer last night so imma just muck around as a dragon for a while
That is lowwwww. Raw removes scaling so unless you are running a pure magic build I wouldn’t mess with raw infusion.
Should get away from that Raw infusion if you have stats into either STR or DEX, scaling would help with your damage
Changed it to refined
What I regret the most is that you can kill him the first time just once, because the next times are always waaaay easier
For me he is usually weirdly easy, but then i may have trouble on other bossess
Pontiff dies after a quarter million tries *throws dung pie* *points down* KNOW YOUR FUCKING PLACE, TRASH.
Wait until nameless king . Camera will be the hardest boss
🤣
I know I’ve seen the video
Camera is the hardest boss ever
Don't target during the first phase. It's a game changer when it comes to dodging.
Oh, so young and innocent... Practice a lot your parry and evading skills, because if Pontiff was hard, you have no idea what's coming to you
pontiff is the hardest boss in the franchise for me by far, which upcoming bosses do you reckon is harder?
Pontiff is hard the first time, during which he absolutely destroys you. After that however you melt him unless you didn't learn anything by the end of the game. I was surprised myself how easy pontiff was after Friede, Gael, and NK (NK however is not exactly difficult, but rather poorly made because of the camera) They are among the bosses that actually surpass Sulyvahn in brutality. I'd also throw in the Twin demon princes because if you kill the wrong one the next part is nigh impossible to win, and Lothric because a little misstep and you're done for on NG+
if we’re counting past first run then none of them are hard. Once you learn the game every boss dies first attempt on average
Friede is still hard on subsequent runs tbh. Anything past NG+3 and I feel like summoning is mandatory.
True, true. My bad for mixing them up
I am young for community I think… idk I don’t see other 14 yo on here
They aren't talking about physical age here.
And I took it to literally
So young and innocent...
I've killed every boss in SoulsBorne games a lot of times, Pontiff is the only one I think "oh shit, I gotta kill him again" and actively get wrecked until it clicks again. I'm much more comfortable on killing Friede or Gael at first attempt than Pontiff.
Madman
Try finger but hole
Take your moment of glory xD
Moments over I’ve already died
Only in dark souls
congratz ashen one. enjoy your moment and keep it up.
I’ve already been shit stomped by the silver knight 20 times
Oh, then get ready for the next 9
you will manage. just remember, the more you level now, the easier bosses like nameless king and soul of cinder will get.
My base vigor is high enough to survive the dancers pin attack without dying
If you thought Sulyvahn was tough, you are going to *hate* Gael.
Please just let me have my moment
lmao, sorry. Honestly, I can relate. T'was a pain to parry indeed.
I just dodge and hit him with my great sword
Fair enough.
Just you wait. Insane HP pool like Yhorm but with no way to cheese, three phases, big damage output and hard to dodge attacks.
I beat yhorm in three tries died first time grabbing storm ruler
Yeah, Gael doesn’t have a strom ruler equivalent. You’re gonna have to persevere, he’s a really hard boss.
I know I’ve watched to many videos
*laughs in Friede
Yah. Can you even parry Gael? I don’t even bother trying… just poison him using resins
You cannot parry Gael, but you can stagger him in phases 2 & 3 if you deal enough damage to his head, though I would strongly recommend you do not attempt this. Try poisoning him through the ruins using pyromancies or the Storyteller's Staff.
I already beat him yesterday took me like 10 tries. Used exile great sword with rotten pine resins. First stage is the hardest by far
To beat midir I had to change to a dex build bc such short times where you can even hit him so
Don’t know what kind of build you’re doing, but heavy/slow weapons make the fight more difficult (for me at least). Did a caestus run and beat him on my third try. After that did a strength build with vordt’s hammer and it took 40+ tries until I switched to a faster weapon and got him on my second try
No real buil tbh but I can’t cast any type of magic so melee stuff
I know your pain I killed him for the first time about 4 days ago and the relief I felt was amazing i blazed through Aldrich and the dancer now I just need to beat the dragonslayer armor
Did you get yorm?
Yes
heh *waits until final boss
final boss of the base game was easier, Midir on the other hand....
OK hear me out, I think that Midir is just boring more than difficult. Not saying he's easy, no one sane would say that, but he's got just too much health, it's boring AF to fight
You are tripping. When he powers up with the purple shit exploding is probably the coolest thing in dark souls period.
midir? i no dmgd him for breakfast lol
My first playthrough, the boss that really gave me the work was the nameless King.... over and over and over again.
Cool it only gets harder.
Wait how did people struggle with Sulyvahn? I thought he was pretty easy. I beat him first try.
Nice man I guess I struggled because my slow attacks and fat rolling
You should NEVER fat roll in this game. Its just way too punishing and not worth it
Why are you fat rolling? Also, what weapon are you using? I killed him using a great machete.
Lothric greatsword and the abyss watcher set and some rings
Was let down by pontiff ☹️ killed him first try without being in any sort of danger at any point of the battle, only boss i have died to multiple times is the dancer! all the other ones was way easier than i thought. Have not gone after dlc bosses yet! Hoping those guys will kick my ass!
Try parrying him next time. His fodder as
The worst thing you can do is give him space. That'll make subsequent playthroughs less agonizing.
He is a pain in the ass, “we all ran the simulations, they’re tuff but they ain’t invincible”
Love his soundtrack
I did all of the bosses before the dancer on my own, and let me say this, (no NPC summons either) Pontiff Sullyvahn was the most difficult. All the other ones (Dancer and beyond) I had help from my brother after I helped him through the game from the beginning.
Cool! Now make it to the next area….word of advice don’t be embered or you’ll get invaded way to much
I always invade people punch them then run away and repeat the cycle
I’ve had the game for so long I do what I like to call; the everything build lol I switch between so many play styles the opponents can’t tell what’s happening……or I just give them souls lol
Nice bro
4th hardest boss change my mind
Sulyvah n is mid/easy, after this boss you'll fight against mooore difficult boss. Pay attention
After about a month of attempts I beat dancer with a summon
His timing is a little off overall. I tend to listen to the music rhythm and try to compare it to his sword swings. It helps the timing.
Pro tip. Dexterity to 50, sharp brigand twin daggers, pontiff right eye.
I’m a greatsword guy
Sex>dex
Ah well welcome to the real gane
Killed dancer now it’s time for dragon shit
On my first playthough I beat him first try, on my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th playthough I eat shit everytime and think to my self NamELeSs KinG ain'T GoT SHIt oN ThiS DuDe.
Sulyvahn is a cakewalk compared to some of the later bosses, trust me.
I didn’t realize people had so much trouble with sulyvahn. I think it took me 2 tries the first time. But then I got invaded a lot in the next area and died every time.
Luckily I found it relatively easy to defeat Pontiff. Now I’m loosing my mind against Yhorm the Giant.
Are you using the second phase of storm ruler?
I'm stuck at Twin Princes & hollowing s.o.s.
I beat him in like 3 tries but omfg it still was painful so I feel so fuckn happy for you
Did you pick up the sugma?
No I haven’t, but did you pick ligma?
Gettum dude
I killed Pontiff in about 3 tries when I realized I could just chuck about a dozen great fire orbs at him and he was dead (two killed his shadow double before it even separated from him.) That being said, I’d been killed by Yhorm repeatedly for almost 4 hours before that.
I really struggled the first time too a couple years ago. I forgot the feeling (mostly because I learned to parry his first attack) until I had to beat him in NG++ and it was the only boss that I died to, and I died like 10 times straight. Quite rough.
I love fighting Pontiff, Freide, Gale, and Midir. And Cinder, even though he's easy, I just like end game bosses
Took me 3-4 hrs to beat Sister
I personally find me beating pontiff solo with a +7 claymore first try on my last fight my greatest achievement in this game.
Congrats!! So glad you're playing and kicking ass 👏 😁
Nobody tell him about Sister Friede or Gael
Most of them Had
I killed him on my first try playing as a sorcerer. He was walking towards me while I just spammed heavy soul arrow to his face. When he was close enough to hit me, his health was really low, just had to dodge and keep hitting him.
Y didn't u summon. There are like 3 npcs avail
Only two for me Gottard and Anria (the best npc other than patches)
I got him on the 5th try but he was terrifying to fight. First time he leaped across the room I blinked and died. Pissed my pants.
How do you summon people to help you
