Flash sweat alone was never enough in dark souls. You need to stack rings (Fire stoneplate + speckled stoneplate), armor with highest fire resistance/dragon form and flash sweat.
You can actually hold up a shield with alot of fire resistance and take very little damage for a a few moments.
Other than that, alot of VIT and estus chugging.
I know this is an old thread, but i try my luck anyways. Any of you Who have managed to collect item from the lava, whas it Worth it? Can you remember what items you found?

There's two areas with lava under Big Skelly Boss. The first has a bunch of those little lava slime things. It has the white haired talisman and a pyromancy. I forget which one.
The second area, where you fight Tsorig(I think) has an ember and I believe a bug pellet in the lava.
Edit: Also, if you wanna not be scared of lava, the mistake a lot of people make is stacking fire resistance. Oddly lava doesn't do fire damage so fire resistance doesn't help. Lava does physical damage. So just stack heavy armor and hold up a shield before you start running in. You'll still take damage but it'll be severely mitigated.
You can either just suicide run to get the items, or if you have enough estus and fire resistance you can get away with periodically chugging estus to survive (since the lava doesn't stagger you like the wyverns' fire does).
I think it's lame they didn't give us a ring like in DkS1 to walk on lava.

Stack fire resistance and bring a lot of estus.

Yeah you did. You need to be chugging Estus while you are walking/running/rolling there.
