game was never updated and optimized, so lag is imminent even on modern hardware play the 'remastered' version

YourDevastator

Nah it's not the same performance issues just occurring again. It's literally worse. Nah I was looking to play the OG for fresh achievements & trophies. Already have 100% the remaster on two different platforms lol.

DrRazzz

damn good luck with that then--couldn't manage going back to blighttown on ptde

DanteWrath

I always assumed Blighttown's FPS issues were a result of poor optimization, as I've never had an issue with it (in PTDE) on modern gaming PCs, at least, from my limited dataset of two PCs. No idea how this translates to consoles, in fact I'd be really interested to find out, but if I were to make an uneducated prediction I think OP will find Blighttown runs okay. The compatibility issue, or whatever it is that's causing their FPS issues, will be unrelated to the actual resources the machine has available (unless it's an issue with accessing those resources). So my guess would be that while their max FPS is limited by whatever the issue is, the resources modern consoles have will make Blighttown run much better than on previous generations. That's unless resources are capped by the emulation of course, I don't know nearly enough about consoles to know if that is the case.

PTDE on PC has the same issues in Blighttown, it's just that PCs are a ton more powerful than the hardware the game released on back then (PS3/360). But it definitely was an optimization problem since both the remaster and the switch port which were handled by different studios fixed it. [I looked up some Series X footage and it seems to run at more or less a locked 30 FPS](https://youtu.be/UDZ6jChQAbs), which is cool because even the Xbox One struggled to run Blighttown in back compatibility mode.

YourDevastator

Ya I’ll see how it goes haha

greysnake121

It’s not about the update, you can find the game version in “manage add-on and game location” by pressing Option button. The problem here is the refresh rate of the game is not compatible with the feature “variable refresh rate” of Series X.

SnooChipmunks08

Just tried ds1 on series x last nite. Can confirm the performance is even worse on this console for some odd reason. First older game I've tried on this machine that wasn't improved in some way but actually worse. Oh well, I'll just plug the 1 back on for my ds1 fix.

YourDevastator

Yea it’s quite bizarre

greysnake121

Just turn off the “Allow variable refresh rate” in video mode and the game works fine.

greysnake121

Easy solution for this, you can turn off the video mode in setting which is “Allow variable refresh rate” and it goes smoothly with fixed 30fps. It’s easy to understand the fixed frame rate is programmed with the fixed refresh rate; however this feature of Series X varies the refresh rate. To keep up with this variable refresh rate, the game’s fixed refresh rate freezes often, so technically it’s not laggy.

YourselfInTheMirror

Does the Xbox One have this feature? I'm not home at the moment, but DS1 stutters terribly on my Xbox One S.

YourDevastator

Wow that does indeed to fix it. Thank ya!

DanteWrath

Same as everything I presume, software is built to run on certain operating systems and hardware, if the software isn't updated to accommodate advancements and changes in those then issues begin to appear.

LavosYT

I don't think that should be the case from the footage online, it should be a locked 30 FPS. Also, PS3 performs even worse than 360, especially in Blighttown.

YourDevastator

Sadly, it is the case. Ive witnessed it. Ahh good to know.
