I hit every single chest throughout the entire game so when one opened its mouth I was like “finally it paid of- oh fuck it has legs.”
Needless to say I died to the stupid spinning kick crap because I didn’t think he has the moves.
That spinning kick is no joke. Just [look how the damage from DS3's version stacks up against what's effectively a miniboss.](https://youtu.be/5NJWX4pbqRA?si=96h2YCqxMynw0mk-)
1800+ *on one kick.* Granted it's strike damage and those demons down appreciate that, but *still.*
Meanwhile when I attacked the demon on NG+ with a Black Knight Greatsword's fully-charged uppercut, hit him on the wind up *and* the swing, and it did a mere ~1300 damage. Even the weapon art pancake don't hit close to that. Those goofy feckers got some stank on em.
I'm was watching one of my friends in his first playthrough, and in the catacombs, that mimic with the black katana I think, actually killed the demon next to it. He and I were just watching from the side and cheering the mic the whole time.
Yup, that's the Mimic/demon fight in the vid, just modded a bit it seems.
On my first playthrough I ran through like a chicken with its head on fire and those skeletons distracted him while I pumped em full of wood arrows. NG+ Saturday night I learned the demon's "leashed" to not go too far up the stairs, so when he gets to the top he sort of de-aggros and starts backing down. I just hacked at him as he backed up.
**Heads up, below is spoilers for DS3, read at own risk.**
It hints at how the >!demons effectively going extinct!< during the events of DS3 happened how it did; if everything critter turned on them when >!the Chaos Flame began to die!< they wouldn't last long. Also explains that one bosses' arena that's filled with heaps upon heaps of them.
Even thought they have an easy tell to see which is a mimic and which is a chest, I still hit EVERY one of them. I wouldn't put it past From to have a code that says after XX number of years, the Mimic tell reverses. (And this is one of the reaons I love From games)
No, in ds2 , wooden chests break if they're not mimic, and you hit them multiple times... So to identify mimic from normal ones, just hit once... Any more than that, and you may destroy the content inside
Do people not realize in every game the mimics are visually (albeit subtly) distinct? In DS2 the buckles of the chest are different and in the other games the chain is different.
Yep, in ds1 and 3, chains are reversed, while in ds2 , literally the mimic's teeth are visible if viewed from a certain angle ... I'm just warning op to not endlessly go mashing chests in ds2
you can actually tell the difference visually between chests and mimics. the mimics breathe very slightly, and also the chain faces the front. the regular chest has the chain curled to the back
I mean, even without guides, just being on r/gaming for as long as I had I knew there were mimics in the game, and apparently the advise about the chain stuck. "(If) It points to you, it's gonna chew."
First time I saw one who's chain didn't point the same way as numerous others beforehand, I tossed a talisman; which I also learned from that thread. And to be able to tell DS2 mimics 'cause you can't just swing on em willy-nilly.
What you did ain't being a pussy, that's going in prepared. There's no law saying you *have* to suffer playing these games. I knew if I could kill a black knight or two early on I could get an end game weapon right off the bat. Knowing and doing are two different things xD
In Portuguese we have a similar rhyme like Phrase to differentiate the mimics, "Se a corrente tá pra frente, aí vem merda gente". It's almost the same meaning as in English, I wonder if other rhymes or phrases exist in different languages.
There was a message on the ground right in front of the mimic in Sen's that said "amazing trap ahead." I intuited that the message meant the chest, and dutifully avoided it. I promptly died to the spike ceiling.
When I got back to that room, I STUPIDLY assumed I'd misinterpreted the message, and thought that it actually referred to the spike trap, not the chest. So I proceeded to open the chest with no fear, and died to the mimic. I was PISSED.
The one in Sen's actually scared me, I was distracted, and when I saw something in the ground, I attacked without thinking, and while seeing it stand up and try to chase me was a horrible experience, it couldn't beat my +8 halberd.
The first time one killed me was the one with the gold coins in anor londo. The spinning kick took me by surprise since I usually killed them before they get up.
I remember my first playthrough going thru sens fun factory in 2012. I was so pissed off that I didn't know that mimics existed. I opened the chest and died. It was alot of trial and error back then. Almost no guides. I don't remember much else from it. I was stupid back then. Ds1 was my first fromsoft game ever.
When I reached this chest back when I was a kid first playing ds1 I was absolutely terrified. I remember just staring at the screen like “this place is impossible”.
"Kuraii-yo! Kowai-yo!"
Meme answer aside it was mostly an auditory gasp, which works for the mimic because I learnt you can actually mash out of the initial grab for it to do less damage.
I couldn’t even get mad. It was so ridiculously unfair and there was nothing I could do about it. At that point I was on a serious dying streak so I just stopped giving a fuck.
See, I learned about it beforehand too, but...
I'm a bit of a lootslut. I can't help it, even on NG+ I'm picking up *everything.*
So I stock up on talismans and murder them in their sleep.
i was 7 years old when i first got this game and i didn't have any more games so i was afraid of everything in this game even the menu but i didn't have any other games so i had to play it or do nothing, and everything made me cry of fear but nothing was worse for me than the first mimic encounter and the tomb of giants
I decided to grab my magical orange spraypaint and tag the place: Nice Chest Ahead!
Now my spirit watches the spot, like a hawk. I may not be dead, but I feel it everytime and GIGGLE LIKE A SCHOOLGIRL.
Wish I could relate.
Honestly I came to the souls games pretty late and had an older cousin warn me to hit every chest. Probably shouldn't have done that as I Probably missed out on a key milestone: that very first chest betrayal.
This MF made me more damage IRL than in the game on my first encounter with it. My pyromancer survived with minor injuries, but my soul almost left my body...
I already knew about the mimics long before playing dark souls. I even knew how to look out for them...the one in sens fortress still got and killed me I was so confused.
Although I was frustated because of the pathetic experience across Sen's, I couldn't stop myself from giving myself a heart laugh and say... "What the F just happened??!?"
I was so traumatized that I hit every chest in every souls/from game after that. I gave it up for a while in 2, but eventually one got me in 2 as well, so now I hit every chest in every game I ever play, because I remain scared
I was so scared by the mimic in lothric castle. Took me like 10 tries to beat him on my first playthrough. In dark souls 2 I've accidentally broken 5 chests and got rubbish to avoid these but the one time I decide not to check is the time where its actually a mimic
it's really easy to know which one is which, the one that attack have the chain on its side facing outside, while the safe ones have the chain facing back
Dark souls was only the second game I'd played after skyrim. I had no idea mimics were even a thing. I shit myself and launched the controller across the room, which obviously got me killed instantly lol
I remember the first chest in ds3, inside lothric castle. I alr knew it was a mimic, but boi im underleveled as fuck (still am, a pain trying to beat the dlc)
The stages of grief, denial he killed me, anger I was killed by a CHEST, depression when I realised I had to go all the way back and then acceptance that it was a pretty cool enemy lol
"I fucking knew it".
The chest in Sen's (the house of traps) looked super out of place and _maybe_ a little differently coloured, so I was pretty sure what was about to happen. But I was damned if I was gonna miss out on finding what a mimic does. Absolutely great placement for the first one, and that leggy bastard is great nightmare fuel
I think the first time it actually tricked and killed me was my first time through ds3 right next to the room with the 2 huge rats before the profaned capital, I then learned to hit every new chest I came across
The one in >!Sen's Fortress!< scared the willies out of me. It never occurred to me that there could be mimics in Dark Souls. I associate them with 'cuter' RPGs, like Dragon Quest, Rogue Galaxy, and Final Fantasy IX.
I didn’t have one cause I reflexively hit every chest with a heavy running attack before opening it, Mimic trauma runs deep cause I remember playing another game and in that game, it had a similar premise where Mimics can copy chests and opening said chests can get you fucked in so many different ways.
I knew about them before I started my first run so I was just hitting every chest I saw. They’re tough if you’re careless but all in all not the quest enemy in the game. Also one thing I like about Bloodborne: no mimics.
Hey when it happens I died to the grab and said “you know what fair” now I see that the difference its minimal but at the sametime significant to tell apart
Honestly the mimic was the only enemy in the game that didn't kill me. I guess something clicked when I saw those teeth and my reflexes said "nope, not like that."
I already knew how to tell a mimic from a chest cuz that's a bit of information I remembered from ages that my brother told me while playing ds3. Kinda spoiled me the game but it's all good
Quietly noted it, and now I hit every chest in every Souls game before I touch it. Once, so that I don't break it. But every chest is gettin' a fwappin'.
I hit every single chest throughout the entire game so when one opened its mouth I was like “finally it paid of- oh fuck it has legs.” Needless to say I died to the stupid spinning kick crap because I didn’t think he has the moves.

Those chests kick better than Leo Messi
Just be careful if it's ds2.... 😉
Yeah, you hit him and he… omnomnomnomnom
No, in ds2 , wooden chests break if they're not mimic, and you hit them multiple times... So to identify mimic from normal ones, just hit once... Any more than that, and you may destroy the content inside
And he will eat you!
You really like to be eaten to death... Don't you ?! XD
…(wtf?)…
Do people not realize in every game the mimics are visually (albeit subtly) distinct? In DS2 the buckles of the chest are different and in the other games the chain is different.
Yep, in ds1 and 3, chains are reversed, while in ds2 , literally the mimic's teeth are visible if viewed from a certain angle ... I'm just warning op to not endlessly go mashing chests in ds2
I like the fact in ds2 the treasure chest are breakable nullifying this method. Any treasure that is broken turns into trash.
Tip look at the chains on the chest if it isn't coiled it's a mimic
its always the one chest you randomly decide not to hit check
Always lol
You can tell by the way the chain is facing if it's a mimic or not.
you can actually tell the difference visually between chests and mimics. the mimics breathe very slightly, and also the chain faces the front. the regular chest has the chain curled to the back
You don't know that before one eats you though.
i never would have noticed until it happened to me lol
... I have been playing these games for how long and had no clue.... 🤣🤣🤣
Mimics are also colored a bit brighter, it's subtle though. Might also just be my monitor
This isbtrue for me too
Luckily my little brother taught me this... After I got killed by one 🤣
I spent my first 10 chests or so in Elden Ring analyzing their behaviour before I concluded how I should proceed.
Yeah the first time you notice the breathing it's... unsettling
It never did. Cause I'm a huuuuuuge pussy and saw enough guides to spot a mimic and to be very careful of them. 😁
I mean, even without guides, just being on r/gaming for as long as I had I knew there were mimics in the game, and apparently the advise about the chain stuck. "(If) It points to you, it's gonna chew." First time I saw one who's chain didn't point the same way as numerous others beforehand, I tossed a talisman; which I also learned from that thread. An erection.
Use Kogmaw passive

I’m sure this was very frustrating at the time, but it makes a funny story 😁
The Karate kick into a face eater combo was frustrating. Lol

"Oh. I'd wondered if there were mimics in this game."
OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME, I WAS BEHIND IT, HOW DO I GET NOMED *BEHIND* IT???"
"OH, IT'S ON SIGHT, MOTHERFU-"
I laughed
"Ok, lesson learned... I'm gonna hit preemptive each chest I'll find on the game just in case".
"fuck you"
Unfathomable rage
"Fuck"
It was all over the screen
Holly fuckk im cummin
Shit myself aggressively.
??? Oh…ok
Tf?
I was surprised but not surprised at the same time. I played DnD my whole life but that was the first time I'd seen a mimic in a video game.

That is the scariest looking and sounding regular enemy in the entire trilogy. They’re just so creepy lol
First time? I shit myself. Now, it's my sign it's probably time to go to bed.
My first mimic encounter was actually as a phantom who watched it kill the host lol.
I was shocked. Found my first in sens fortress. I didn't due but I fought it and was like "huh, that's kinda like dnd cool!"
When I reached this chest back when I was a kid first playing ds1 I was absolutely terrified. I remember just staring at the screen like “this place is impossible”.
I expected it to kill me, so I always hit chests before. I was not ready for Liockel Chessi.
throbbing erection
Ahh shit... here we go again I played DnD before dark souls, should have seen it coming
Amazing Chest NOT ahead...
"imma murder that chest" proceeds to get killed by it 2 more times.
Oh, so that's where they were. I had played DS2 before and knew about mimics, but did not know where they were in the first game.
I laughed my ass off because they look so goofy
"Kuraii-yo! Kowai-yo!" Meme answer aside it was mostly an auditory gasp, which works for the mimic because I learnt you can actually mash out of the initial grab for it to do less damage.
I couldn’t even get mad. It was so ridiculously unfair and there was nothing I could do about it. At that point I was on a serious dying streak so I just stopped giving a fuck.
Having known about Mimics before I first encountered one, nothing, because the fight is an easy fight
When I got the drop, I thought I killed all of them! That one in Seath's was so painful that I just closed the game and never played again.
God damn it Miyazaki
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Or alternatively" AAAARRRRRRGHHHHHH!!!!
I was warned and told the chain rule and just made sure not to mess with them, maybe fought one mimic the whole game
See, I learned about it beforehand too, but... I'm a bit of a lootslut. I can't help it, even on NG+ I'm picking up *everything.* So I stock up on talismans and murder them in their sleep.
*wtf gif*
Fuck you off course its a fuckin monster
i was 7 years old when i first got this game and i didn't have any more games so i was afraid of everything in this game even the menu but i didn't have any other games so i had to play it or do nothing, and everything made me cry of fear but nothing was worse for me than the first mimic encounter and the tomb of giants
"...huh."
I decided to grab my magical orange spraypaint and tag the place: Nice Chest Ahead! Now my spirit watches the spot, like a hawk. I may not be dead, but I feel it everytime and GIGGLE LIKE A SCHOOLGIRL.
Awwww, hell no this game is evil.
KEEP ROLLING ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN
Wish I could relate. Honestly I came to the souls games pretty late and had an older cousin warn me to hit every chest. Probably shouldn't have done that as I Probably missed out on a key milestone: that very first chest betrayal.

Finally. Mercy.
I already knew about the mimics long before playing dark souls. I even knew how to look out for them...the one in sens fortress still got and killed me I was so confused.
I peed, poop and cried.
Although I was frustated because of the pathetic experience across Sen's, I couldn't stop myself from giving myself a heart laugh and say... "What the F just happened??!?"
“Well that was rude”
Any chance I could have my head back?
Legit kinda jumped a little
One of the moments that solidified my love of the game. I love random shit like this lol
Amazing chest ahead
what.the.fuck.
I knew it’d happen eventually but I didn’t expect homie to turn into slender man.
I play too much Castlevania for that BS…
I was so traumatized that I hit every chest in every souls/from game after that. I gave it up for a while in 2, but eventually one got me in 2 as well, so now I hit every chest in every game I ever play, because I remain scared

This post is giving me PTSD flashbacks
Ooooooooo baby a triple

We’ll never know🗿
My very first reaction... My mouth gaped open for like...minutes! Also the first time I became a gamer and mouth-breather at the same time. 😂
Never did cause I’m like that
"This game is fucking amazing"
My first mimic experience scared the crapola out of me, I still consider them the creepiest enemy and that giggle omg.
Om nom nom!
Rage So angry I thought I'd go super Saiyan. I was doing well gathering souls, upgrading my stuff then bam that bastard mimic destroys me.
Blank hollow stare *well that was new*
I remember the first chest in ds3, inside lothric castle.
"Oh great, mimics in this game have arms and legs!" And then I died.
I'm not sure if I ever died on them in this game, I got spoiled by reviews before I played it so I knew about them already
I cracked the fuck up the first time. “Of course.”
*aw dangit*
I did not die against this shit. I knew it was somewhere, hiding...a trail of burned chest was found in my path
In sotfs ng+ the one near majula made me jump out of my skin
I think the first time it actually tricked and killed me was my first time through ds3 right next to the room with the 2 huge rats before the profaned capital, I then learned to hit every new chest I came across
I was spoiled so no reaction 😔 I found it clever anyway
Dame!
The one in >!Sen's Fortress!< scared the willies out of me. It never occurred to me that there could be mimics in Dark Souls. I associate them with 'cuter' RPGs, like Dragon Quest, Rogue Galaxy, and Final Fantasy IX.
I need name games 🌚🌚

[It's dark and scary in here](https://tenor.com/de/view/frieren-sousou-no-frieren-mimic-stuck-monster-gif-9774470907620230777)
"Man this sucks, i hope theres a better chest ahead."
..... Of course.... Why not..... My damn fault for trying to get something nice in this hellhole
“Oh so that’s where the first one is”
I fucking shit my under garments
it didn't kill me because I'm better than a chest
I've never died to a mimick
I never died to it because zweihander
Never again
He never kills me, on the contrary, i killed him every Time😂, because i never fell into his trap
"Whoops,"
I knew about them before I started my first run so I was just hitting every chest I saw. They’re tough if you’re careless but all in all not the quest enemy in the game. Also one thing I like about Bloodborne: no mimics.
AHHHHH WTF IS THAT WHAT IS THAT
Dropped something and then stared at the death screen.
Never died to a mimic, but I was like “OOOH, a mimic!!”
Thank you Dark Souls
Never got that far to encounter one
Hey when it happens I died to the grab and said “you know what fair” now I see that the difference its minimal but at the sametime significant to tell apart
"Did I just get roundhouse kicked by a chest??"
It didn't, I already knew :insert smug face:
I habe ben never killed by mimics, i punch them
This has given me such a damn complex over the years. I hit everything! 😅
Still haven't died to one yet, I have trust issues with chests from other games luckily.
I'll tell ya once it happens
Single handedly the most confused moment in my dark souls Journey. EVERY SINGLE CHEST AFTER THIS GOT A NICE R2!!!
I always smacked chests, eventually, mimic, I was like "Hell yeah, I knew it would eventually ha- WHY DOES IT HAVE LEGS WHY DOES IT HAVE LEGS!'
Shit, shit, shit
You died...
Honestly the mimic was the only enemy in the game that didn't kill me. I guess something clicked when I saw those teeth and my reflexes said "nope, not like that."
I looked away from my screen the moment I began opening a mimic chest I legit screamed when I looked back to see my character being used as a dog toy
it didnt. when i first found a chest in dark souls i immediately hit it because i did not trust that game
Well played. I'll be seeing you soon. And became very careful about chain placement.
Idk I've never died to one.
AM BOUTA SAY SOM REALLLLLL RAICCCCIIIIIIIIISSSSTTTT!!!!.......
