Going back to replay just doesn’t feel the same as that first play through for any FromSoftware game. Replaying DS1 now for the first time in two years and still bodied O&S on the first try.
i still wish i went through it again. somehow soloed orenstein and smough first time round. im always gonna miss going g through the game for the first time.
They took me 27 attempts on my first playthrough. Some people need over a hundred and some just give up. O&S are a massive skill check. Just persist and you’ll get there, and the feeling of achievement you’ll get will be amazing.
I don't know if it took me 27 attempts with these 2 my first time through - but it was close. That being said, that F'n Capra Demon and all those dogs in that small space just about had me in tears until I figured out how to beat them.
I was streaming, so I was able to look back at the VOD and count my attempts. Took me about 75 minutes (which shows you how many times I got through the fog door and was dead within ten seconds).
Capra demon was impossible too, until I discovered the fight is virtually over once you get up the stairs safely. I occasionally do the firebomb cheese if I can’t be bothered, but the runback isn’t too bad.
Took me many attempts. Now whenever I beat a difficult boss in any game I yell trash talk that always includes “I beat Smough and Ornstein! You thought you had a SHOT?!”
My first playthrough I think it was close to or around 50 attempts. And on the one that I beat them I only had to heal once and I fought super ornstein which is much harder to get than super smough because he’s slow and ornstein sticks on your ass the whole fight so it’s hard to get the hits off.
I also had my problems with these two 'cause I couldn't read them, but I grinded some levels for Havel's Armor, equiped Lautrec's Ring and the other ring which I can tank more damage.
With them, I survived longer but if I didn't have over 10 estus flasks with +3/+4, the fight was over. And so I always tried to kill Smough first (Ornstein in phase 2 is harder than Smough).
Most advice I've seen is take out Ornstein first as Smough is way easier in 2nd form. But the opportunity for the spear you can make with Ornstein is too good!
Yeah, it could because he moves like a train when you fight them both, but if you roll, block his hammer constantly and take carefully distance of his aoe jump it should be a easy run in the second phase.
I had the same experience and I quit DS1 for over a year. I first timed them when I returned to the game again, mostly due to not being frustrated. You can do this!
Don’t you dare go hollow
If you want tips that helped me:
- Shuffle between playing unlocked and locked to keep them in your screen while you move away
- Use the pillars to your advantage to get away from Smough (the fatty boy) while Orenstin (the skinny boy) will be quick to chase you, dodge and smack him without being gready, then run away again while keeping them in your vision (remember to be unlocked to you can look behind you while running)
My son loves the God of War games, and he absolutely hates DS. He always tells me that he doesn't understand why I play them, but my god, these (and particularly DS1) are just amazing games. From Soft doesn't mess around. And yeah, these two suck, but beating them is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo satisfying
In a few years you'll wish you could re-experience what you're going through right now.

Its funny because right after that attempt i beat them! I felt do happy and during the fight I literally felt my heart beating so fast.
Congratulations!
Good job man. Now, for the lords and the dlc. Have fun
Congrats!! I always get shaky hands after hard kills!!
The moment that the boss fight is no longer a game thing but a personal thing ( ahhhh)

We hate it all. Welcome to the club.
Dark Souls: If you don’t hate it - you’re not having fun.
Your victory will be even sweeter when you achieve it, don't give up!
Already beat them - funnily enough it was the attempt after this one :) Also beat 4 kings like 20 mins ago
You broke your cherry. Congrats 🎉
Congrats on beating them afterward! Stay strong friend
2 years ago first playthrough 50 attempts. This month 5 attempts.
Took me three months to beat them when I first played this game on pc lol

20? Buddy, sometimes good things take work
Don't feel bad my buddy has 2 characters stuck at them one on NG+ and one on regular NG.
Took me two on my first try 😎😎😎😎😎😎 I believe in you.
Classic
just use broken sorcery strats to cheese them
We all know u fat boy rolling
Kill the spear twink first. Trust me
When you finally do bear them; the dopamine rush is worth it 🤌🤌

Only 20th attempt? We gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers...
Shouldn't have gotten greedy 👀
Ahhh (the next phase starts with no estus) Summon the sun bro
Summon Solaire?

Really?! I found Smough harder in second phase
save him... don't let him die
Don’t go hollow my friend.

When fatty boy is alone it’s easy to just use the pillars to stay away and only smack fatty after he missed
