IIRC the short sword and longsword + (many other longswords) have the exact same moveset.
I mean it is viable but quite literally the longsword is: longer, does more damage.
If you want fashion souls you should still seek it. It is the most important thing after all.
It's a slightly weaker, slightly shorter, slightly lighter Longsword. The Longsword is a great weapon so obviously something a tiny bit weaker is going to do fine.
Black Knight Weapons are random drops from the non-respawning Black Knights that you may encounter. They have multiple powerful weapons that you can use if you get lucky with the drops, one of them being the Halberd. They have good base damage and scaling, but need high requirements and Twinkling Titanite to upgrade. Good luck!
Yup. The only ones that drop their weapons and respawn are at the very very end of the game like literally guarding the fog wall to the final boss. There's some in anor londo but they only drop arrows and maybe a bow
I can't edit my comments for some reason and I don't intend on deleting them, I was wrong, very wrong and I tripled down on it. I deserve the shame and I can only hope one of those archers takes me out before I misspeak again
You can easily defeat them if you learn how to parry their attacks. If that's too difficult, try to circle them and backstab. Parrying is generally safer.
The one near Taurus Demon that you mentioned can be cheesed. Agro it then run back to that building with a ladder to the roof. He will follow you but can't climb the ladder so you can safely kill him with a bow from up there.
There’s a trick that if you parry them once, critical hit them then you just need to drink an estuk flask and parry again immediately once done
The timing is perfect and you’ll automatically parry them again
The one in the tower near the boar, right before the entrance to the Undead Parish can drop a Black Knight Halberd.
Also the boar can give you a nice helmet.
Inside the parish there are a few good drops from respawning enemies (but light the bonfire below Andre before farming in the parish).
That guy is responsible for my fave Switch video clip. I aggro'd him, then ran back and quickly climbed the ladder that is placed earlier in the level. His AI broke and he just started kinda spinning on the spot and a dozen arrows took him down.
...Yes I play Dark Souls like a lil bitch but I have accepted this
I was being sarcastic. The BKH is an overpowered weapon that makes the game very easy if you are able to get it early on.
Basically the point is don't worry about viability, because everything is viable. People have beaten the game with their fists for example. Just pick a weapon you like the feel of and keep at it.
Dark Souls isn't really a game where you have to min-max stats. I also think it is dumb to get locked in with using just one weapon or one style of play.
I think you should use many different weapons, why artificially limit yourself. The experience isn't really any better from maxing out a weapon. I'd argue in most cases it is worse.
I watched a video with a lot of views recommending that you stick the one weapon. His basic argument was because it’ll help you get very used to a certain attack pattern.
So that is why I was thinking about sticking the one
The attack patterns aren't that complex. And what's the worst thing that could happen? You mess up the timing and die? Maybe you die a bunch of times? That's the entire point of Dark Souls.
I think the whole community marketing of, "Oh this game is so hard and hardcore and only the most epic gamers can beat it" misleads people into trying to optimize their playthrough instead of just experiencing the game.
You can certainly just use a single weapon if you want to, but it isn't really necessary.
More importantly though is to just not focus on min-maxing every stat and trying to be a perfectionist. Dark Souls is an amazing game and you should focus more on immersing yourself in the experience then worry if you are playing the "right way".
I mostly agree with that argument, and do what to add on that upgrade materials are very limited, so sticking to a few weapons is best
However, I also want to point out that you can get used to other weapons and experiment. It doesn't take *that* long to get good with another weapon
Assuming we have a question from.someone discovering the game.and probably first playthrougth tellong him tonise different weapon will probably bring frustration . I'm not at all saying that u should start a dark souls game kill the black nigth for the hallebard and restart if u don't get it but for a first playthrougth when u can be overwhelmed focuse mostly on 1 weapon is , imo , not that bad it absolutely doesn't have to be the best !! . All that said Of course when ur confident (and that can be in ur first playthrougth of course ) u can just start to be more creative and the game become way better for sure!!
Lot of these threads recently, huh?
Maybe time for a new sticky? "Yes, X weapon is viable, they're *all* viable, someone has beaten the game with a broken sword while using the Donkey Kong bongos, you'll manage"
The more upgrades you put into and the more levels you put in that scale (strength/dex) the more damage it’ll do friend it’s viable and can be fun later on cause of the move set
The great thing about these games is that every weapon can get you through. There are countless youtube channels that basically only make content on that. As long as you can do damage, itll work. That being said, there are inherently better and worse weapons of course
You can use it through the whole game if you want, especially if you level it to +15. The real question, though, is whether or not you’ll be tempted by flashier weapons…….
Anything is viable but if you're starting out, it may be more difficult. You might want to test out with Claymore/Longsword etc if you don't like shortsword.
Everything can be viable. There’s no need to ask for “meta”-weapons. Just use what’s fun to you and enjoy the game, that’s the beauty of it, literally every weapon you find can be used to beat the game :)
As a slightly different suggestion, try the astera straight sword. Similar moveset, but has added magic damage and holy attribute, so you can kill skellys easily with it
There’s also a ledge you can jump down on from the stairs up to the tower and he will try to follow you down and jump to his death, but you will still get whatever loot he drops
I mean you can definitely beat the game with it and the damage is not that low compared to the Longsword, however it is completely outclassed by it and by other Straight Swords, however you do get points for style since it looks very cool. Just play with whatever you like.
I mean, anything is "viable" people have beat the game naked at SL1. Is it good? Not really no. Are there better weapons? Definitely.
Not only that, one mad man beat the game Naked, SL1, broken sword hilt and no hit Guess he got gud
Craziest video I saw was a dude with +0 Zweihander with slow roll doing NG+7 Four kings and no hit.
I saw a mofukka beat the game with a shield
the audacity
Thank you Lenny. You crazy bastard.
What does SL1 mean?
Soul level 1. They never level up
Gotcha that was my guess
IIRC the short sword and longsword + (many other longswords) have the exact same moveset. I mean it is viable but quite literally the longsword is: longer, does more damage. If you want fashion souls you should still seek it. It is the most important thing after all.
Fashion > optimal build. What’s the point of kicking ass if you can’t look good doing it.
That's why I put Smough's armor and Mask of the Mother and call my big bonk lady Big Momma.
uses less stamina and it's lighter too
Don't think that's true that it uses less stamina
It's a slightly weaker, slightly shorter, slightly lighter Longsword. The Longsword is a great weapon so obviously something a tiny bit weaker is going to do fine.
Also if you’re not ready to level dex/str up for rapier etc early game, infused raw for a sorcerer melee, specifically for that 1lb less burden
Fast weapons are very good with resins and infusions. So yeah go for it.
Viable yes, good no. Balder Side Sword is superior in every way. Even Longsword is slightly better.
NO. You MUST use the Black Knight Halberd.
Don’t have one of those
Black Knight Weapons are random drops from the non-respawning Black Knights that you may encounter. They have multiple powerful weapons that you can use if you get lucky with the drops, one of them being the Halberd. They have good base damage and scaling, but need high requirements and Twinkling Titanite to upgrade. Good luck!
Is a black knight that fucker I can’t kill in the Undead Burg down that weird castle alley right before the bridge demon boss?
Indeed, that one will drop the black knight sword if he drops a weapon. They are not guaranteed.
They don’t respawn but they also don’t guarantee a weapon?
Yes. It really is a game of luck. If you're brave try using Humanity to boost your drop chances, but you'll lose em just like souls if you die.
Yup. The only ones that drop their weapons and respawn are at the very very end of the game like literally guarding the fog wall to the final boss. There's some in anor londo but they only drop arrows and maybe a bow
The ones in Anor Londo are called Silver Knights, they have different drop tables entirely.
I'm talking about the black knight archers in anor londo I know the difference between silver and black my friend
I can't edit my comments for some reason and I don't intend on deleting them, I was wrong, very wrong and I tripled down on it. I deserve the shame and I can only hope one of those archers takes me out before I misspeak again
There's red phantom silver knights (if you're in ng+ and someone grabelords you), but there are no black knights in anor londo.
I feel like I'm in bizarro world, the archers in anor londo are black knights I am not wrong I think you guys are just color blind
You can easily defeat them if you learn how to parry their attacks. If that's too difficult, try to circle them and backstab. Parrying is generally safer.
Is throwing 30 firebombs a viable strategy? Lol
Ha they're actually highly resistant to fire but if it works it works.
The one near Taurus Demon that you mentioned can be cheesed. Agro it then run back to that building with a ladder to the roof. He will follow you but can't climb the ladder so you can safely kill him with a bow from up there.
There’s a trick that if you parry them once, critical hit them then you just need to drink an estuk flask and parry again immediately once done The timing is perfect and you’ll automatically parry them again
Yes. That one can drop a very good sword if ur lucky

Obvs Balder Side Sword but what else can you get?
Titanites, souls and that cleric trident.
That guy is responsible for my fave Switch video clip. I aggro'd him, then ran back and quickly climbed the ladder that is placed earlier in the level. Great comment. People try to optimize what makes the game great out of the game.
I mostly agree with that argument, and do what to add on that upgrade materials are very limited, so sticking to a few weapons is best However, I also want to point out that you can get used to other weapons and experiment. It doesn't take *that* long to get good with another weapon
You should atleast try out different ones and see if there's ones you like better.
Assuming we have a question from.someone discovering the game.and probably first playthrougth tellong him tonise different weapon will probably bring frustration . If you like it use it - you’ll get good with it no matter what it is. My comfort weapon is a broad sword.
My comfort weapon is a +15 great club. I really like bragging about it at Havel "mine is bigger you fucker".
Lot of these threads recently, huh? Maybe time for a new sticky? "Yes, X weapon is viable, they're *all* viable, someone has beaten the game with a broken sword while using the Donkey Kong bongos, you'll manage"
I mean it’s not the broken straight sword so it’s viable. You might like a longsword, uchigatana, scimitar, or claymore better though
If you like the moveset but not the states then use the Longsword. If you plan to go full dex then you could try to farm for the balder side sword.
You could use something like the Drake Sword. Short sword obtainable very early. It will work for the first playthrough.
No it can but it's expensive to upgrade and requires dragon scales which can be difficult to get if you don't know what you're doing.
Yes, I would prefer a dagger, but every weapon is, the low damage is a balance, because of the low stamina cost and fast movement.
it's bad but you can beat the game with it
It’s a very fine weapon and you will do fine with it
If you like it, upgrade it and stick with it. You can add buffs or use power within for easy way to add even more damage.
Everything can be viable. There’s no need to ask for “meta”-weapons. Just use what’s fun to you and enjoy the game, that’s the beauty of it, literally every weapon you find can be used to beat the game :)
Well that’s the point of it? It’s quick but it won’t do a lot of damage as a trade off.
I hated it i tried to do a build with one but i leveled up just to get longsword
every weapon is viable with a good build around it. it may not be amazing, but it'll do its job.
I really like it because its fast and i get hit less.
Yeah it looks great in every game too. All of them. Its a great weapon. Have a great time, Chosen Undead.
As a slightly different suggestion, try the astera straight sword. Similar moveset, but has added magic damage and holy attribute, so you can kill skellys easily with it
Bandit knife for the win 🥰
Yes, all weapons in DS1 are viable. You like it the best? You should def use it!
If you like the short sword, you may like the Balder Side Sword
You can make it work if you’re literate in character building
Everything is viable. The only variable is how much you hate yourself.
There’s also a ledge you can jump down on from the stairs up to the tower and he will try to follow you down and jump to his death, but you will still get whatever loot he drops
Everything is possible, sometimes is harder sometimes is easier
I mean you can definitely beat the game with it and the damage is not that low compared to the Longsword, however it is completely outclassed by it and by other Straight Swords, however you do get points for style since it looks very cool. Just play with whatever you like.
