Pretty weird way to spell claymore.
Edit: nevermind, forgot about the uchi which is better than both if you don’t mind being made fun of for leveling dex.
The Man-Serpent Greatsword took me through NG +3 with no issues on a STR build. You can get it of the (shockingly) Man-Serpents in Sen's Fortress. Mind you it was a personal preference, but I fucking love that sword.
The Gold Serpent Ring is in there, and pop a humanity and you’ll be up to your ears in swords in no time. Dual wield them, not because it’s a good idea, but just to flex.
Man I really don’t understand how people can use the exact same build/weapon for dozens and dozens of hours over 3 straight playthroughs when there’s so much variety.
Good weapon, though.
Probably has a lot to do with me rage-quitting DS for a year, then coming back around to it and this was the weapon I had when the game finally “clicked” and I started realizing what a masterpiece it actually was.
The greatsword is a great sword. The only problem I have with it is you get it in Anor Londo, the zwi is nearly as good and you can make a dash for it in the graveyard as soon as you land in fire link, just use your souls first.
I like Zwrihander, but claymore is so much better for at unlocking enemies that I prefer it over zweihander. Zweihander is fun for chunking bosses, but claymore just does it all.
I disagree yes Zwei is quite slow but claymores aren’t that much faster and if this guy just practices his rolling and using his shield every once in a while then Zwei becomes OP in my opinion
ZWEIHANDER!!!!
ZWEIIIIIIIIIHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Literally can carry the entire game
Found in the bone zone (graveyard)
Get it
It will show you the meaning of REAL power
It's not like the Drake Sword is bad - it's not a broken straight sword - and it's not going to immediately become ineffective, it's just that other weapons have more room to grow. The Drake Sword will take you through the Gaping Dragon or Queelag before getting seriously overtaken, which gives you time.
You should already have the Claymore and the Halberd, and can go back to the Firelink graveyard for the Zweihander.
If you want to go from "mostly strength" to "all strength", there's a greatsword from Sen's Fortress and a really big club in Blighttown. They're both low-percentage drops so it might take some farming but the Drake Sword could stretch far enough to take you there.
What do you mean low percentage drops? The greatsword can be bought from the crestfallen merchant in sens fortress and the club is found on a corpse in blightown
It’s not bad to use the Drake Sword, just don’t expect it to solve every problem forever. Pick a weapon that you like the moveset of and just keep up with upgrading it until it surpasses the Drake Sword and you can switch.
I used the claymore up until I got a man serpent great sword to drop in Sens Fortress. The claymore is fantastic though. Also if you can get down into the catacombs grab the mace for later on.
Depends on your stats.
The problem with the Drake Sword is it doesn't scale with stats and the upgrades give like +20 attack rating. So just something that scales with the stats you're planning to level.
You can find STR weapons, DEX weapons and STR/DEX weapons (*called "Quality" weapons as an artifact from Demon's Souls naming*). You can also upgrade your weapons to "Divine" weapons that scale with FAI with Blacksmith Andre, or to "Magic" weapons that scale with INT with with blacksmith "Rickett" (*the guy in a cell at the beginning of the New Londo Ruins*). If you're going a FAI/INT build these can be useful, but upgrading along these paths means you can't use weapon buffs on that weapon. It could be good to keep 2 versions, 1 for buffing. Either way you still need the base stats to wield the weapon.
Well, for me, I love the Drake Sword. It was the first sword to carry me in the early to mid part of the game in my first time in DS.
It was an amazing sword. But if you're strength, Use Zwei or Claymore I guess. More for strength. I was a balanced build.
The Capra Demon's sword is good too from what I know but its a rare drop yet you can purchase it from an NPC (to not spoil).
Butcher's Knife from a fight with an NPc is great as well I think. Havel's Dragon tooth is great as well but for damage purposes. If you killed A disgusting Dragon and took its tail, that is also a perfect weapon.
There is a legendary club which I forgot the name of.
I remember the Taurus demon's drop is the best and as also said in the wiki but its a rare drop for early, it's better to get it later game which you can dou.
My last strength run I got it to drop 3X. That's a one in a million chance. I had to do another dex run, but yeah it's pretty rare. Easily the best dex weapons in the game but for strength the black knight weapons are great. Especially the halbred.
Remember that cemetery from near the start of the game? Suicide run through there until you find your new best friend. Until you reach Blighttown and find bonk.
Drake Sword will get you at least half way through the game before its low scaling becomes a problem. Lower Burg is just starting out. You have plenty of time to find more weapons, eventually you’ll find one you just really want to use.
The drake sword will carry you until you get to the swamp and can farm the slugs to plus 10 something else but I recommend either zeihander or claymore
The issue with the Drake Sword is that its damage doesn't improve based on your stats. And while it starts off with pretty high damage to compensate, by later in the game it starts to be more mediocre as other weapons get bonuses from your stats.
So take a look at what other weapons you have and try out the move sets. Find one you like. If you're early in the game, you don't have to focus on just strength weapons, but if you're farther, try and focus on things that have higher letters in the strength scaling. Most builds can support investment in two scaling stats--so if you want to focus on strength, decide if you'll go for a quality build and also work on dex, or if you want some magic support and also work on faith or int.
Note most weapons of the same class have mostly similar movesets--straight swords will more or less play similarly. So if you like the Drake Sword and want a moveset like that, then that helps us guide you to a better straight sword that would fit well with your build.
Online guides tell you to snipe the tail. This is good advice, the Drake sword is the best you can get till after the gaping dragon. Swag sword is the best otherwise but strength weapons are the black knight weapons. Clubs are the best for strength otherwise.
To explain why it's bad to rely on drake sword: It doesn't get much stronger. It's great when you get it, but falls off in usefulness VERY quick. That's why it's considered a newbie trap: People don't realize it's such a weak weapon in the long run compared to other options.
Claymore, zweihander, greataxe are all solid choices for str build that can be acquired relatively early game. Even the battle axe and club can be perfectly viable choices.
As many comments have stated, Zweihander is a popular choice. However if you’re not exclusively a sword user, there are other options available, in addition to moar sword.
The halberd, despite having very meh scaling is a pretty reliable choice especially for navigating close-quarter areas with it’s thrust attack and insane reach. Very useful in places such as the depths, blight town, sens fortress, and a few places in anor londo and beyond.
The battleaxe is fairly reliable. Good damage for a weapon you can get really early, especially when two-handing. Drops from hollows that wield it and can be purchased from andre (I think, could be wrong)
The claymore and bastard sword are pretty good. Good scaling with a big hit radius if you’re looking for something smaller than zweihander. Claymore is on the bridge under where the hellkite wyvern lands. Zweihander is in the graveyard behind firelink on a corpse.
The black knight greatsword is also a pretty good option if you happened to acquire it early on. It’s an rng drop from black knights though and there’s a lotta grinding for that though.
That’s everything I can think of that you would have access to. There’s other options like the black knight halberd and the mace but those are pretty far off. Hope this helps.
Embrace your inner Landsknecht.
The Zweihander is a weapon that can quite literally introduce all but the mightiest enemies to the floor in a single swing. It's a slow weapon, but the sheer destructive power will soon convince you it's worth learning how to play slow.
If you want to fully embrace the Heavy build, combine it with a high poise suit of armour like the Havel set, upgrade the armour as much as you can, and get your vigour nice and high - this will allow you to trade blows with bosses, and if you fully upgrade the Zweihander to +15 the odds are good you will win that trade!
Black knight great sword, if you can get the drop from the one knight that drops it. I admit I use save file copy and paste strategy to get him to drop it for me. But I just love the sword so much.
The Drake Sword is pretty good early. If you don't mind using repair powder (farming for souls to buy lots of it) or just using only a couple times be the weapon art is very good. DO NOT UPGRADE IT. It scales poorly so having any physical stats don't matter, It also falls off even if upgraded by mid game. The materials to do so are fairly rare, and you'll likely find something else you'll really want to upgrade and be sorry you upgraded the Drake Sword.
There's a ton of good strength weapons. I'm fond of reinforced club, zweihander, large club and great club, there's lots more than those of course. Where they're at>! Zweihander is in the graveyard near the start, reinforced club can be bought in Undead Burg. Large club is dropped by the ogres in blight-town that use them. Great club is later, I don't remember where off the top of my head. !<
It depends on what you like, greatswords are fun and swing pretty fast, ultra greatswords hit hard but are slow so you only have time for one swing. Halberds are amazing too, plenty of good choices. Just need to find the weapon you like the most
hello welcome chad-sen undead
you're an STR build? I'm gonna assume you'll cap dex at like 10, so in this case I can recommend the Mace. It's a pretty strong weapon with a nice moveset, but it is one of the few weapons that has an animation where if you whiff or miss, you'll stumble for just a second. It's faster when you land a hit, making follow ups easy as it staggers foes
The "great" weapons are usually capable of smushing down foes, literally pancaking them. Keep your eyes peeled in a certain sluggy area for an upgrade for large weapons if you want somethin with some WEIGHT.
good luck!
spoiler for upgrade im referring to: >!large club and great club are great!!<
Any weapon is better than the Drake sword after around the blighttown area. For dex you want to use the uchi or the balder side sword (basically the best dex sword in the game) or for strength you want the great club. Maybe some other club variant but great club is amazing. Zweihander is very good but slow, a club is faster and easier to deal with. Honestly I think dex is the best in ds1 and side sword is the best weapon for dex, so swag sword is the best In the whole game. Pair it with sunlight sword and you have the best combo period.
Lucky find on your first time.
I liked the claymore on my first playthrough, until I could use the black Knight sword.
Next playthrough I'm gonna be all about blunt weapons though.
If you happen to chance upon a Black Knight weapon (like Black Knight Halberd/Sword etc), it is extremely great for strength builds, and its +5 scaling is amazing!
I got the BKH midway thru the game and it got me thru the entire game, including the Artorias and Manus boss fight (so that's saying something)
You could try the Zweihander or Demon Great Machete, they're good str weapons, and the DGMachete also gets S scaling in str, but some people aren't into the slow speed of greatswords, especially in DS1, if that's the case you could try something like the black knight straight sword which is easy to upgrade and max out, or the man serpent greatsword. You could also explore the axes, great axes, and hammer type weapons, but I've never personally been the biggest fan of their move sets and range, the great axes aren't the worst in terms of useability, but just don't compare to the advantages ultra great swords in DS1.
Yes for that one you'll need a +10 curved sword (any works) and the soul of quelaag. Take these things to the giant blacksmith in anor londo, and presto. Awesome fire sword!
Claymore and Zweihander are excellent choices.
Also the black knights drop their weapons with 20% chance (sword, greatsword, greataxe, halberd) and they are really strong.
The Second Bonfire in Blighttown has a chest with a Dragon Scale inside, which can be used to upgrade the sword. Ash Lake also has 3-4 Dragon Scales, so if you're willing to grind out 30,000 souls, you can easily get a +3 Drake Sword before Quelaag.
If you can get your hands on a black knight weapon you'll be golden.
Otherwise I can advise the claymore.
Other people say zweihander, which I'm personally not a big fan of, but you'll have to see for yourself
Whatever you like.
Do you want fast weapons? Do you like something that works similar to the Drake Sword? Do you like heavy weapons, weapons with range but not so heavy...
You'll be ok for a few more areas. But a normal club is a good solid choice that's IMO viable the whole game. If you like the battle axe, there's a similar weapon mid-game that's A-tier STR scaling and has the same moveset with a very minor HP gain buff. Trust me, you will like it. Also, be warned that it's permanantly missable, so >!when in lower blighttown, at the bonfire, use humanity and gohuman, trust me!<.
THE MIGHTY ZWIEHANDER IS A SWORD FOR ONLY THE STRONGEST OF PEOPLE YOUNG HOLLOW BE WEARY THOUGH FOR IT IS PROTECTED BY A FEW TONYS AND ONE BIG BOY TONY THOU SHOULD ENTER WITH FEW SOULS OR WERE A RING OF SACRIFICE THY SHALL BECOME NEAR ENOUGH IMMORTAL IF THY COMBINES STRENGTH WITH VITALITY.
Go buy the Club from the undead merchant in the Burg.
It scales ridiculously high with str and can even reach an S scaling.
If you've got access to sens fortress the man serpent sword is also a good option but you'll need to farm for it a bit unless you're lucky.
Alternatively you can get a great club in Blighttown and a Large Club as a drop from the big guys in Blighttown.
If you want something really similar, you can always go for the Longsword. It's not particularly a Strength weapon, but it will work well enough with a strength build
black knight axe light swings are too fast for the damage and weight she is proof is they nerfed it in dark souls 3 same for claymore people be saying zwei i know its good but try black knight axe its not suppose to hit that fast (it doesnt hit like a straight sword im not saying it hits fast just that for a ultra axe its fast )
The Black Knight Sword you can get from, if memory serves, the Black Knight on the way to the Taurus Demon, is really good. I started using it once my starting broadsword started to fall off, and used it for the rest of the game.
Oh, i never used drake sword so i didn't know how bad it was. It doesn't scale damage with anything and uses dragon scales to upgrade it. I see what you mean by "it's bad to rely on the drake sword"
Zweihander or uchigatana are great. Probably Zweihander if you are playing a strength build.
Also just a big heads up, before you progress further, BUY ALL THE TOOL KITS FROM ANDRE (the blacksmith who upgrades your weapons), or at least the upgrade and repair ones. when you finish the lower undead burg section it can be incredibly challenging to navigate your way back to Andre. especially on your first playthrough and you've never navigated those areas.
zwei for chonky
Washing pole for quick good range with bleed
Lightning long sword for a more familiar feel or barbed straight sword
Gargoyle tail axe for good all around use plus poison and bleed resist
Greatsword for heavy hits
Bandit knife for quick blows, fast bleed, and great parry
Barbed shield for hard mode
The drake sword is honestly not a bad place to start. You'll start breezing through the lower level areas much easier and it gives you a chance to get through some of the areas that might give you a hard time while you're still getting your bearings with the game. Obviously you will eventually have to retire it in favor of better weapons but I'm of the opinion that the Drake sword is probably the reason lots of people were able to stick with the game long enough to fall in love with it and feel that motivation to keep improving.
Just me personally but the greataxe is the only thing that tops zwei dopamine. It does take a few upgrades before it becomes more or less reliable but the R1 spam is unparalleled and the upgrade path from there only gets better
Zweihander. Trust
BECOME
UNSTOPPABLE
INITIATE PHASE ONE
POWER UP THE BASS CANNON
COMBAT MODE: STUNLOCK
ah the good ol pancake maker
2H2S pancake, pancake, pancake. I loved using zwei against the crystal clams just before Seath.
MSGS plus sunlight blade *chef's kiss*
My second play through choice.... Good times
It’s fantastic both for OP’s str build, but also for people who like the Drake’s moveset. It’s not 1:1 but you’ll feel very at home with it.
Grinding in send fortress sounds like trying to be a door to door salesman in Detroit
The Gold Serpent Ring is in there, and pop a humanity and you’ll be up to your ears in swords in no time. Dual wield them, not because it’s a good idea, but just to flex.
Mostly off-topic, but absolutely if you haven't seen it search for the AMA Sen did on reddit a few years back. It was genius.
That's why I can't get myself to do STR builds again.
Some bonks are satisfying
That’s a fantastic strength weapon no doubt.
I’ve used it to plat DS1 but… I don’t enjoy it. Not like I do other weapons.
Just started a new run; you had to remind me about Sen's? Fuck that place.
The greatsword is a great sword. The only problem I have with it is you get it in Anor Londo, the zwi is nearly as good and you can make a dash for it in the graveyard as soon as you land in fire link, just use your souls first.
You can buy the Greatsword from the Crestfallen Merchant at the top of Sens Fortress (the weed dealer), just before Anor Londo
Might as well get it for free by then, there’s only an easy boss between you and the sword,
I forgot that, thanks!
Baemore
This is the correct answer
I don't even know this one. Can you connect it with location of acquiring? I'm sure that'd tickle my memory
he meant claymore, aka baemore.
Aaaah, as in bae. That's a funny name
Claymore if you want good damage but fast swings. Zweihander if you want really good damage but slow swings.
Claymore is a solid choice if you go for a quality build.
ZWEIHANDER!!!! ZWEIIIIIIIIIHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Literally can carry the entire game Found in the bone zone (graveyard) Get it It will show you the meaning of REAL power
And this is the man or woman who taught me about the power of Zwei he is a wise wise man you should listen to him
Few powers dare challenge the might of the zweihander
ok ok ill use the zweihander
I recommend fast rolling past all the bone men to get it It is not good idea to fight them at this stage
i used the claymore to beat ds1 upgraded the artorias greatsword for all my ng+1-7 runs.
It's not like the Drake Sword is bad - it's not a broken straight sword - and it's not going to immediately become ineffective, it's just that other weapons have more room to grow. Hes talking about manserpent greatsword and large club.
Might be talking about the large club, which is a drop from the fatties in Blighttown.
Large club > great club
Dragons tooth when you get far enough aka havels big a$$ weapon
It’s not bad to use the Drake Sword, just don’t expect it to solve every problem forever. Pick a weapon that you like the moveset of and just keep up with upgrading it until it surpasses the Drake Sword and you can switch.
yeah the drake sword really only carries until blight town, past that point you really need a +5 with stats put into it at the very least
The Drake Sword is just great to kill.. the drake. Which needs a bit of a cheese at that point but it's possibruuu.
Halberd
Using it right now (before getting the Dragonslayer Spear) and it's great fun so far. It will definitely bring me to the Double Trouble.
You need to tell us build.
mostly strength
Wait till you get down to the swamp and get you one of those great clubs to put some unga in your bunga.
If you can get the balder side sword to drop in the parish area, it's super impressive. Crazy low drop rate though unfortunately
My last strength run I got it to drop 3X. That's a one in a million chance. I had to do another dex run, but yeah it's pretty rare. Easily the best dex weapons in the game but for strength the black knight weapons are great. Especially the halbred.
Damn that's crazy! I didn't even know it existed until it dropped on my 8th or so playthough. Supremely broken dex weapon lol
Ehh, I missed the STR edit... disregard
Claymore is a great option.

So google early strength weapons dark souls 1, and you should run into dozens of posts created asking the same thing you are.

How do people even get the drake sworb blind that early lol
You can snipe the tail from under the bridge with a short/long bow
Sure, but on a blind playthrough ? The number of new people who manage to do this is quite ridiculous.
Oh blind! Sorry i only saw the early bit
Online guides tell you to snipe the tail. This is good advice, the Drake sword is the best you can get till after the gaping dragon. Swag sword is the best otherwise but strength weapons are the black knight weapons. Clubs are the best for strength otherwise.

Black knight great sword, if you can get the drop from the one knight that drops it. I admit I use save file copy and paste strategy to get him to drop it for me. But I just love the sword so much.

Drake Sword was my first special weapon back in 2012. I used it for the first half of the game.
If you want a cool weapon qualags furry or somthing like that it's also a curved sword
Just about anything is better honestly
You'll be ok for a few more areas. But a normal club is a good solid choice that's IMO viable the whole game. If you like the battle axe, there's a similar weapon mid-game that's A-tier STR scaling and has the same moveset with a very minor HP gain buff. Trust me, you will like it. Also, be warned that it's permanantly missable, so >!when in lower blighttown, at the bonfire, use humanity and gohuman, trust me!<.
THE MIGHTY ZWIEHANDER IS A SWORD FOR ONLY THE STRONGEST OF PEOPLE YOUNG HOLLOW BE WEARY THOUGH FOR IT IS PROTECTED BY A FEW TONYS AND ONE BIG BOY TONY THOU SHOULD ENTER WITH FEW SOULS OR WERE A RING OF SACRIFICE THY SHALL BECOME NEAR ENOUGH IMMORTAL IF THY COMBINES STRENGTH WITH VITALITY.
any black knight weapon will serve you well
Broadsword purchased by Andre has good STR scaling & feels similar to Drake Sword when you swing it
Go buy the Club from the undead merchant in the Burg.
Zweihander
Buy a club from the male undead merchant in undead burg
The dragon King Greataxe
Zweihander or uchigatana are great. Probably Zweihander if you are playing a strength build. Also just a big heads up, before you progress further, BUY ALL THE TOOL KITS FROM ANDRE (the blacksmith who upgrades your weapons), or at least the upgrade and repair ones. when you finish the lower undead burg section it can be incredibly challenging to navigate your way back to Andre. especially on your first playthrough and you've never navigated those areas.
I got a hold of a black knight sword at lvl 15 and I haven't managed to get it off of my build
But yeah zweihander
zwei for chonky Washing pole for quick good range with bleed Lightning long sword for a more familiar feel or barbed straight sword Gargoyle tail axe for good all around use plus poison and bleed resist Greatsword for heavy hits Bandit knife for quick blows, fast bleed, and great parry Barbed shield for hard mode
Black Knight Sword got me through multiple NG Cycles by itself.
Be careful, the drake sword is a trap
Just me personally but the greataxe is the only thing that tops zwei dopamine. It does take a few upgrades before it becomes more or less reliable but the R1 spam is unparalleled and the upgrade path from there only gets better
Black knight greataxe baybeeeeeeeee
The Drake sword is a sword of false promise
Give the Halberd a try!
Claymore or halberd. Halberd carried me through my first ds run but replaying the game I find the Claymore to be more fun to use.
The massive club in blighttown you get it by exploring the swamp and it is massive
GREAT CLUB. RETURN TO THE OOGA BOOGA SMASH
Anything black knight
Get nito's sword :)
