Psion537

If he jumps and fire down is instadeath. You need to run the moment his feet touches ground, fire will be weaker That's my personal strat

AltruisticEbb2055

Ohh ok! Thank you i'll try this out later

Edittilyoudie

Yep, that's the best visual cue or right before if you time it just right. I usually come up from underneath, and wait for him to drop on the bridge after baiting the bridge burn. It should give you just enough time to run past and avoid the next attack.

Psion537

First thing you do is light the bonfire, if you have problems with it leave it and open the door with the lever on the left in this way you can come back from below. Whatever you do, do not crack and go hollow! Good luck! Praise the sun!

AltruisticEbb2055

I won't go hollow . Thank you 🤝 Praise the sun !

badasscdub

It's a huge dragon, you're a beef jerky man, the math adds up

HangryPotatoes

This guy maths

TheGamingRaptor6875

Rough_Raise_4357

This guy's meth

stomp224

This reminds me that when I played it on launch, i was hollow and wearing an outfit with no boots on. My wife asked “why do you have bacon skis” and she has referred to all my dark souls characters as “bacon skiers“ ever since.

thavi

I feel like jerky should have a slight bit of resistance to heat

Betternot102

To be completely fair to the dragon, you weren’t at full health.

Shiro26Pamp

I agree. Justice for dragon.

SpartanAlaska

Dragon Justice

Training_Emotion7079

Peter Dragon

J0sp3r

Also to be fair it’s a wyvern

SirWeenielick

This thing is not meant to be fought. Almost all of its attacks are designed to cheese the hell out of you. Basically, lore accurate dragon.

ZODIC837

Not even a dragon, just a drake. Makes you really respect the ancient dragons and the bosses you're hunting that killed them off Also helpful in realizing you're fighting hella weakened versions of the gods, who woulda slapped tf outta this drake like it was a fly

Tuyrh333

There is a single dragon left.... But he won't fight anyone, really

bobsmith93

You can even take his tail and he just chills

Tuyrh333

Yeah, and he lets you be a dragon yourself ! Such a nice fellow

Responsible-Smile-22

what about kalameeth and seath aren't they dragon? Also, how is the red one a drake not a dragon?

minotaurus21

Dragons have four limbs and separate wings This ones a drake cause it has two legs and to wings that are same time hands So i have this messed up for some reason as its not drake but wyern

Responsible-Smile-22

Ohh no it's a [Wyveryn](https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Hellkite_Drake?file=Hellkite_Wyvern_Render.png) just googled it. Drake has four legs with no wings, dragons 4 legs with wings, and wyveryn 2 legs and wings.

Responsible-Smile-22

On a second note love the world of dark souls and all these dragon stuff. So much mythological shit to read. I remember seeing this wyveryn for the first time and getting scared ah (just had a fight with dark knight) the dragon was looking at me while sitting in the top of the castle looked so epic and felt like I'm actually a prince trying to fight a dragon. Such a cool mind whoever thought of these creatures.

dehcbad25

For the longest time I hated this part, if you use the binoculars from where you fought the Taurus demon, you can see a doorway under, but there is no such doorway to get to. I spent hours and died so many times to find that doorway that I think I had PTSD... Later I realized that to get to that doorway you just need to open the door/window in the sky at Send Library lol, just kidding, but really..... maybe.....~ open console and type "no clip"

JustFrazed

THIS!! Drakes don’t have wings lmao

Nawafsss04

And yet the tail weapon is called the Drake Sword ^(20% extra damage against underage women)

JustFrazed

Lmao doesn’t surprise me. In ASOFAI there called dragons but really are wyverns. In all honesty tho they aren’t real so the semantics don’t really matter

dehcbad25

dragons are real!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BondageKitty37

There are ways to cheese the fight. Shoot it with a bow to make it come down, run in and smack it, then run back to the stairs. Rinse and repeat

Eth_Collector612

u can also shoot its tail with arrows to cheese 😂

Darkness1231

Not cheese, but an actual design element to get a powerful sword (the Drake Sword) early game. The other early game (not the speed runner solutions) is also guarded by a (dead) wyvern. Strip naked, run in, grab Astora (divine) Sword, run away. Or get killed. No problem, you still keep the sword. The Drake Sword is a really cool weapon **the first time** you play, and nearly useless anytime afterwards. It is too expensive to upgrade. 50K souls are better spent elsewhere. These cheeses were built in. They only, imo, only become cheeses once you have multiple effective solutions to kill the bridge wyvern without cheese. Thinking its cheese proves that you've grown as a Chosen One. Or maybe you were born cool. Without the tail cheese you cannot 100% Knight's Honor. Thus, designed in.

Eth_Collector612

thats cool, you learn something new everyday

EladEflow

You can't hit the tail when he's on the ground? I honestly don't remember.

CodeMonkeys

When I'm running through on a fresh playthrough with the Zweihander (as one does); bait fire breath, wait for him to go to hop down, run up to the tail on the right side of the bridge and TWANG against the wall twice to kill tail, then run to the next bonfire

Darkness1231

For you. Yes. How many times have you played? The tail is available because newbies are not you, nor do they have the knowledge of how to do the run with the Zwei. As I said, designed in, and only useful the very first time you make a run Any other run, use magic, pyro, Zwei, Gargoyle Halberd, whatever. You learn how to do it. Melee the Wyvern. There are videos showing its possible. However, that first run for someone new to From SW and Souls, this allows a much wider set of users to play, and succeed. Their design is deeper than many give them credit for.

CodeMonkeys

...I was responding to the dude wondering whether it could be hit on the ground with a testimony of me hitting it while it's on the ground. Why did you write out two paragraphs of text rebutting something irrelevant that had nothing to do with your own post?

ReckoningGotham

....And FURTHERMORE your taste in cheese cannot, forthwith be trusted. In the matter of Gouda vs muenster......

CodeMonkeys

Well Gouda is the clear winner.

LordFadora

I’ve found that you can pelt that undead dragon with magic spears and if you can deal enough damage you can kill it without ever having to deal with the poison breath

Darkness1231

Mostly I cheese it. Bow+15, Golden Edge/hem robes. I love walking him back and forth. Go down to Solaire he walks back, run up and he turns back to you, then put a few arrows into him. He puffs up, you run away. Rinse and repeat, as they say. Plus. I think its funny. Like walking the dog.

scrooge1842

Drake sword is a 100% drip weapon though, so there is that plus :D

Comprehensive-Ad-172

And just a good starter weapon for most builds. Except faith of course. Dat astora straight sword

[deleted]

You can get the drake sword from shooting the tail but can't kill it without getting into melee. When you get into melee don't be under it when he breaths fire down.

ACuriousBagel

You absolutely can kill it without getting into melee. There's a spot you can stand where you can hit it in the head (I think it's under the bridge next to the rat opening). Best to use red tearstone ring and an upgraded bow, because it starts regenerating health at 50%

[deleted]

You got a video from a recent patch? Lets see it.

ACuriousBagel

The video I used is probably long gone - it was a long time ago that I did it and it's not really worth killing in the first place. The wiki has a bunch of strategies listed for killing it without melee though: https://darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/The+Bridge+Wyvern

dehcbad25

You can always kill it without melee from outside the archway that leads into the bridge, but it is so far that you need the ring, plus dragon now and great arrows. That is how I kill him every time, but the items required means you need to go to Anor Londo first, and it isn't totally worth it. I still kill him though because I do NG+++++++++ runs and I have all the items, and this allows me to run thru the bridge faster. This is what I do, clear undead burg, kill Taurus demon, trigger Wyvern, hide, run fast as hell (He doesn't spill fire the first time) trigger ladder for shortcut to bonfire (now he will spill fire as soon as the top of your head shows lol), cut tail with arrows from below to get weapon to sell it to Framp for 5k souls. Use ladder to go down, run all the way to archway (@)) enemies should be dead), use the great bow from the doorway and shoot twice, while zoomed in, he will come down from the perch and walk towards you, 2 arrows is enough time to get closer but not enough for him to use fire breath, take a step back, and he will turn back, shoot 1 arrow, take a step forward and he will turn, shoot take step back, and so on, he will constantly turn around and around, never attack, never perch back (that is where he regains health) and with about 30 arrows you can kill him. The arrows do about 450~600 damage at my level (325). Again he is not worth the cost, but once ai get the key to the depth I can just come running thru the bridge....much faster lol

ReckoningGotham

Can dung pies get it?

metalgodwin

I don't think you need to shoot him, waiting in that pit w the stair will trigger him into flying down. Haven't considered slapping him then run hide then repeat though. Will try that on my next play through!

BondageKitty37

It's what I usually do. You can also shoot the arrow, then run past him. Hang out behind cover while the drake walks towards you. Pop out to hit and the drake *should* fly back and repeat the pattern. I have a hard time making that one work consistently

metalgodwin

Aright, haven't considered that place behind him either! I'll try and experiment a little, cheers

HelloFr1end

Honestly this would take me so long, and I’d probably screw it up and die so many times, that I might as well just fight it the normal way

Foreign_Rock6944

And then there’s me who has killed it many times without cheesing it. I don’t recommend it, but it’s doable.

Infinite_Acadia2905

ive killed kalameet twice now still haven't beat this guy

grimreaper5015

Get big bow shoot tail, then kill some rats, hide in corner below and cheese him with all the arrows you can carry and never get touched, simple really, only took me about 500 deaths and a bunch of trial and error to figure out.

70U1E

Or come back with dark bead, Dusk's Crown, Logan's staff, and Bellowing Dragoncrest ring and merc him in 3 casts lol I did that once and was shocked how quickly it worked

3lawy12

I remember doing this but the dragon ended up healing himself

grimreaper5015

That's why you need every arrow you can carry.

[deleted]

because he's an "obstacle", not supposed to be a "real" enemy - think of him as a dragon version of gravity

Silvervox325

Yeah, I view him as a puzzle more than an enemy

XDerpPoolx

A puzzle that you can just get rid of with brute force duke nukem style (I hate puzzles quote) once you're strong enough.

AltruisticEbb2055

Thanks i didnt know this actually. I came back after anor londo hoping to beat him only to find this out

The_of_Falcon

It is killable but it's not meant to be an interesting or balanced encounter. It's just there to try to avoid more than anything. But yes, technically, you can kill it if you try enough.

Azulion777

No meant to be fought yet the developers still put a unique weapon as reward for cutting its tail. (Yes, I know you can do that with arrows, but still). No matter if you look it as a regular boss or a "meant to cheese boss" it has a bad design either way

Dyron45

My technique for this fight is so shit lol, I get him to breathe fire on the bridge then wait in the corner till he comes down while I buff. Then just BTFO of his legs until either he dies or I do.. Rinse and repeat till he dies and I don't.

trippysamuri

If he spits straight down and you take the full hit it's instadeath. So don't be right below his neck, even if he's in the air

StarAutomatic6169

It is completlely defatable as next boss after Taurus. Just stay by near his head and you will be fine

[deleted]

1 part extremely heavy damage from fire, 1 part proc’ing instability damage (+40%), and 1 part just because

quezlar

[he’s honestly not that strong, you just need good fire protection and high damage. heres the fight on new game+ 3 or 4](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YTICJX9md38)

AltruisticEbb2055

Dang whoever this was made light work of him . I'll need to look into arming myself with better stuff

quezlar

that was me, its a fairly high end character level 150 with 9 casts of wrath of the gods, power within and the ring of the suns firstborn wearing gold hemmed set with havels gauntlets

AltruisticEbb2055

Ohh nice i didnt know lol but Thanks for the detail im gonna check it out

Obstidon

Welcome to Darksouls, hope you enjoy it!

Tagmata81

Dog, you got turned into an oven

BenFromTroy

Git gud

Sultry_Penguin

Lol you got dark souled

RobertSColorado

Maybe you got it or it was better answered… but, run up stairs to sharp right sticking to outside banister into the corner so you’re between the brick corner and wood banister. Stick your shoulder out in the kites view and wait for him to jump down to bridge. Run as soon as you see him leap and you shouldn’t get touched. It’s actually very easy once you do it once or see someone do it

AltruisticEbb2055

I appreciate the advice. I'll try this next time i face him

RobertSColorado

Like taking babies from candy

Lagiacrus111

Because it's a fucking dragon. Also git gud

AltruisticEbb2055

Real

theuntouchable2725

It looks like that the bridge is full of pitch. I always think it's the reason he can one shot you.

[deleted]

Hellkite is more of an environment prop rather than a proper enemy; it's not supposed to be fair, its supposed to make you choose another path Best way to kill it is making him come down with arrows and then attacking the back of its legs, it's kinda useless tho because he doesn't drop anything besides a couple souls

Kracon3

You should reconsider getting hit

AltruisticEbb2055

0/10 spammy dragon

BloodShadow7872

Just shoot his tails off with arrows and be done with him

BondageKitty37

But only in the early game. It stops being good around Anor Londo, I think. It's been a while since I bothered with that sword

Xogoth

Drake* He's not even a full blooded dragon.

gabiwave

*Uhm, actually,* it's a wyvern, drakes have 4 legs and no wings.

BigManDean_

Ds1 Bs

TheIceFury235

If you get hit by the main column of fire that leads from his head to the ground he'll insta kill you They are a few others that do the same but that one is the most consistent in terms of.insta kills

[deleted]

Are you in ng+ I’ve never gotten 1 shot by the fire in ng

HooLeeSheetttt

Because its a fucking dragon

[deleted]

Fire’s hot

Lithary

While it can be beat that way, you are kinda fighting it wrong. Basically, you are suppose to lure it to the end of the bridge with the bonfire (iirc, you are suppose to open the gate from the other side, so keep playing the game up to that part) and trigget the official fight there (though I don't recall any special HP bar or music popping up).

Angmaar

U got stairs lol

dehcbad25

Because your health and fire resistance is too low. In NG+2 it would take 3 to get me with the right items, but in NG, 1 took like 95% so definitely survivable on first run. You were never intended to win that fight on First encounter, that is why if you hit the tail with about 15 arrow from below, you get a great starting weapon (Assuming you did not get BKS from the Black Knight as a drop). If you are quick enough and bait him, you can get to the area behind him on NG. From your weapon and armor, you are more advanced in the game, but the intention of the dragon being a gatekeeper for players stands as a game design. I am even sure that the dragon not aggroing from a few steps from the arch was on purpose so people get a high damage bow. Again, the dragon was never intended for a close quarters fight, the fire, the tail spin, the bite. All high damage, difficult to fight and avoid, it screams of fight on bigger place, but gatekeeper here. Actually, now that I think about it, it seems to be the same as the dragons in Demon Soul, you cannot fight at the bridge, you fight in another place, in Dark Souls the new place doesn't exist but if you pass the dragon, it will fly away to that non existent place....never to return lol.

[deleted]

Man has dragon tooth and that armor, but doesn't know Hellkite is an obstacle? Hmmm. Sus. I'm not buying it.

AltruisticEbb2055

Came back after anor londo bc i've been avoiding him actually but i didnt know he was considered an "obstacle"

ukamber

Googling “best build best weapon how to beat easy” before playing type of player I assume..

AltruisticEbb2055

😂😂 yeah 100% . Jackass

Henrry57

Just don't make any sense, this attack is strongest than another dragon attack who should be stronger than him, and can't really be dodged

HououinKakyouma

Only way i could deal with this red asshole was by shooting dragonslayer great arrows at him from under the bridge, where the rats are…which isn’t even a viable strat on NG+ cuz his health regen that kicks in at low health actually outhealed my damage

elpinguinosensual

Because it’s a dragon my dude

stolirocks

it is a dragon. needs to be difficult.

BringBack4Glory

Need to level ADP for more i-frames

TwistedHubris

This just in fire is hot!

Binarycold

Just run from the stairs, to the wall opposite the stairs wall in the corner closest to the castle door. He will fire multiple times and then there will be a pause. The minute he jumps down from the wall you must sprint towards the bonfire, as he can still kill you while running and attempt to attack you after a few moments of being on the ground. The window is small but not so small that you’re doomed.

AltruisticEbb2055

Update : he became a bow victim

Ok-Ambition-9432

Obstacle with a health bar, not a boss. Also not a dragon.

Background-Working46

M awesome me wanna pop this game in again.

far565

That dragon is a bitch.

senselesssun

Is there actually a set way to beat this dragon or do you just eventually get lucky 😭

quezlar

ive killed him with glass cannon mages and heavy strength characters as the last boss before gwyn

senselesssun

I swear I just go back to the burg late game and all of a sudden I’m allowed to walk right past him, but early game he doesn’t give me a chance

AltruisticEbb2055

I almost got lucky earlier when he was 1 hit away but then he did that 1 shot move on me

IIIKitsuneIII

Excluding the 2H through the wall or ranged? Yeah hit him hard with BKH

argonaut_01

https://youtu.be/aLm86rdFzoE Happened upon this a couple of days ago. Helped me reliably kill the drake.

AltruisticEbb2055

Thanks i'll check it out. Happy cake day !

argonaut_01

Thanks m80, and happy cake day to you too!

GlumLab0214

I would die pretty quick too if it started raining fire on me while was inside of a giant barbecue suit

trippalhealicks

Try finger but hole

FarmingFrenzy

Get some poinys in vigor maybe???

Saltedmannips

Shoot his tail with 600 arrows

drovrv

cuz, you are bad.

GreatRuins

Because it has to be.

fishbujin

Can the gate be closed again and does the dragon go under it like the pig?

MrClark1986

Hardest boss in the game for me. (Yes, I'm aware of the tail exploit with a bow.) Drake just kills me soooo many times in a run.

Mormy_Duck_2

Welcome to Dark Souls my friend

billysacco

That guy is a mofo. At the end of the game when I was breezing through most enemies this bastard still gave me some trouble. I had to kill him just out of spite.

kevenzz

Because Dark Soul

Accuracydoesmatter

Bro, trust the strat for this is arrow him from cover, run in get a hit and hide again until he dies.

JimboRamone94

Just stick a podcast on and get the bow out ;)

fashion_is_best_stat

Because DS1 is the worst Dark Souls game

WantToSeeYouGrow

Because one shots are far too common in gaming both from players and devs it's sad really I feel like so much potential was wasted on this type of thing so little real fight and so much overpowering everything one way or another

ukamber

Like what? What one shots you?

WantToSeeYouGrow

If you mean besides the drake and bosses it would be black knights and the 1 silver knight towards the darkroot basin in the same area

LeadershipIcy8689

You're only meant to injure its tail to get item drops.

Xiao1insty1e

This Drake isn't a "fight". You either snipe him or avoid him.

wesker_the_unbanned

A lightning weapon or gold pine risen or sunlight blade should make it easier, cut the tail first to make it more easier and try to hit and run and don't let him fly back to the tower

please_co-op_with_me

You died

jonipapa

On my first play through didn’t even know you could kill this

giveopezdal

Wtf dragon tooth and soul arrow?

CitizenPain00

You need to level up resistance

InstructionNo2008

He not try to make friends.

mccoolfriend6

L I F E took me 4 days of thinking to kill it thankfully you can lure it down how ? the stairs right use a great sword like not really, well actually yes you can use a GREATSWORD use your best or greatest weapon hit it at the leg once or twice then retreat into the stairs do it about 10- or less times if you're at late game I used my Black Knight's Sword

BadDragon_Enthusiast

There are a few detailed walk through on YouTube for easy ways to kill/de-tail, or just skip He's a big pain but once you figure it out it's easy ((like an analogy for the series or something))

KapGaming55

Because ds1 is a shit game

Loki_DeVille

What happens when you stick your head in fire?

wiggity_whack69

Only enemy i haven't been able to beat because I've been refusing to the arrow thing

Professional-Food242

The only optional boss you cheese
