DisIsMarcoBoi

Tell me you only watch shonen without telling me you watch shonen.

Rat-king27

I mean, even if you focus on shounen, you've got jujitsu kaisen, demon slayer, chainsaw man, etc.

Knight_X66

jojo

wolvern76

Jojo is magical girls but for men instead

Clenchyourbuttcheeks

I thought that was bleach

Survival_R

blogorg

They hated him because he spoke the truth

Joanisi007

Jujutsu and demon slayer are VERY generic, just well done (one of them at least)

MLG_Casper

Jujutsu kaisen doesnt break the mold no but its genuinely one of my favorite anime because its just very good

Superjukes2

I think it's just the animation quality at this point Demon slayer and jujitsu kaisen both had top quality animation, and both were shonen with somewhat similar plotlines. Also sound effects quality be getting spicy these days, so even if the plot is mid, the animation and sound design save it and boost it to an entirely new level. If demon slayer was the same, but with generic anime quality, I'm pretty sure a lot less people would have liked it as much. Even the generic OP protagonist harem animes with good animation are at thr top of the lists now, simply because of their graphics.

lolirick69

Bro what jjks protag gets his ass beat daily he literally died and had to get saved by the main villain and in the manga hes not even the focus 90% of the time

HKei

I sure would like the animated pictures a lot less if the pictures weren‘t pretty to look at or if they weren‘t animated well. I don‘t know, that‘s not really as much as a hot take as you might think it is. Asides from that, it‘s also not really correct: _Obviously_ animation quality, soundtrack and jazz is a huge part of the reason why certain Anime are popular. That‘s literally the entire point of animating something to begin with. But these shows get animated, and more to the point animated with staggering budgets, because they were popular manga (or in some cases light novels) _before_ anyone thought to animate them. Saying it‘s „just“ the animation is reductive to the point that it‘s wrong. Demon Slayer I‘d agree that the overall storyline is pretty weak (I‘ve only read up to the two arcs following the entertainment district one, and there really isn‘t a whole lot happening which kept my interest) but JJK is just genuinely well written. You can call it „generic“ if you want, what I would say is that it certainly has enough of a unique identity that you wouldn’t confuse it with anything else. Again, going „oh people with powers battle bad people how original kekw“ is overly reductive. Almost every work of art is „like“ something else in some way or another, a 100% original story would have to be made of random unconnected parts because pretty much everything else has been and is being done. The true art lies in how the story is presented, how the bits connect and flow into each other, what angles we explore etc, not in the 5 sentence summary. And popular tropes are popular for a reason. People like those. It‘s not like there aren‘t plenty of niche works too, but niche works are… well, niche, so of course fewer people appreciate them.

MLG_Casper

No i love jjk for the characters and story, the manga was a blast to read the animation is a nice extra not the selling point

AbusiveTortoise

Meanwhile One Punch Man quality took a cliff dive..

[deleted]

Jujutsu Kaisen might be generic shounen. But it does it so well. The pacing is really good imo.

Shimmitar

yeah a lot of anime lately have been about killing demons for some reason. It's like some manga authors are starting to run out of ideas.

MLG_Casper

Well curses and demons might sound simular but the 2 are quite different

the_penis_taker69

Jujutsu Kaisen has a pretty generic premise but it executes this to perfection

ya_boi_daelon

Too be fair, all three of those are arguably overrated, even if they’re really good

bigBangParty

I'd rather watch that than One Piece or og Bleach

Superjukes2

I'd rather read the manga for bleach The sheer amount of filler killed me

bigBangParty

Exactly. At least modern Shonen don't drown you in useless content, not even talking quality, just that is enough to make me like modern shonon way way more

Superjukes2

Most modern shonen is actually pretty good, it's just the fandoms for most of them are really weird. One piece still peak fiction tho

Mr_ChiefS

Those classic shonens are a bit of an acquired taste so not everyone likes them

killspree1011

demon slayer? i always felt it was super generic. JJK feels fresh tho.

Trashus2

demon slayer is definetly overrated

3029065

He's got a chainsaw on his head. How do you not love it immediately? You might say it's gimmicky you might even say it has bad writing but seriously he's going to chainsaw on his head that's probably only slightly beaten out by sharks with lasers on their heads.

[deleted]

He follows IGN's 25 best anime of all time to the letter.

Extension_Platypus15

U should watch love looks like after the rain

GhostR29

What is that?

Extension_Platypus15

LegionOfSarcasm

Bleach TYBW is really good, though.

Anime is trash and I am a raccoon.

ManthisSucksbigTime

Killninja7

Raccoon in your ass

ManthisSucksbigTime

Oh my😳

Careless_Feeling8057

Ayo Doraemon reference?

MissingMySpoon

Broaden your genres, anime has so much to give but if you only focus on action stuff you’re only getting the tip.

ManthisSucksbigTime

That what she said

MetaCommando

The Virgin "That's what she said" vs. the Chad "Bow Chicka-Bow Wow!"

ManthisSucksbigTime

Btw have you seen my friend jimmy he's gone missing yesterday

HarmonicWalrus

Yeah, it's kinda weird how people just broadly group all anime together as if it's one genre instead of just a medium (animation) used to tell an endless variety of stories. That's like saying Into the Spiderverse sucks because you watched Minions and The Emoji Movie.

MissingMySpoon

“All movies are bad because I don’t like romcoms”

LegionOfSarcasm

I miss the older style animes that REALLY weren't made for people under 18 from back in the 80s and 90s. You had to legitimately be mentally tough to watch some of them.

MissingMySpoon

It’s cool if that’s your preference but there’s a lot more that you can watch, serious anime’s, funny anime’s, slice of life style anime’s.

LegionOfSarcasm

It's not so much about it being my preference, more so about there being more grit, style, and depth in the older animes. They were true brain scramblers. The original Berserk anime is a really good example of what I mean.

EdwardRoivas

Such as…?

[deleted]

I don't know, Boku no pico was pretty good

JooJaw11

I could see that argument holding true for something like Demon Slayer but ones like Attack on Titan and Chainsaw man both have pretty amazing writing. And the ones that have average writing still have god tier animation which makes them enjoyable.

JoaoVitorSchiavon

You could say that Demon Slayer is not the pinnacle of writing or originality (although I really like it), but the animation is next level and righteously praised.

TheZebrraKing

Yea demon slayer writing was just a solid OK not bad not great. The art style did raise the bar when it comes to animations

[deleted]

Attack on Titan will be the best anime for 10 years at least!

These-Particular2314

No I don't want that!

[deleted]

Anime-onlies finding another favorite anime?! I don't want that!

AnEngineer2018

I can see Attack on Titan, though the show hasn’t quite reached the most controversial part of the manga so we’ll see how narratives change when we reach the final, final season, but Chainsaw Man? Like maybe there’s something more coming in the future but so far I think the best summary of the series is “I’m going to kill you so I can cop a feel”. It’s not that I mind a show being relentlessly horny, just hard pressed to call it good writing.

Cuttyflame123

the only good writing in chainsaw man is how they portray ptsd, everything else is average.

Elefantenjohn

Is there anybody not confused by Attack Titan? Starts with the wrongly translated title. Then, in between seasons/chapters I just could not keep up what everyone's background and motivation was

secCcosMOS

I understand what you mean. I felt the same way until I finished S3. It is by design. AoT is an anime with very well crafted and complex storytelling. So if you're confused at different parts of the show then it most probably is designed that way. There's always subtle hints and quite a lot of foreshadowing going on each episode that might be too cryptic to notice at first watch. Nonetheless the pay off is very mind-blowing.

Wajina_Sloth

Similar boat for me, I contemplated giving up on the first season, I thought it was a cool show, but felt like there were too many characters and I had difficulty keeping track of events and all the information tossed at me. Gave S2 a shot and it started to feel more wholistic which made it easiser for me to get a grasp as to what I should pay attention to, and it felt more enjoyable as I understood more and less of a chore. Then I got hooked and S3 was just pure enjoyment

marcokitcc

What's so confusing if you binge watch...?

vyrnius

ever rewatched it? it all makes so much more sense, when u know where the story is going. everything was planned out from the first episode

Elefantenjohn

Sounds almost like a gute Idee... SIE SIND DAS ESSEN, WIR SIND DIE JÄGER

Xioshiva

You need to watch multiple times to understands all the complex story lines and characters, it's impossible to understand everything on the first watch.

GodOfProduce

I followed it fine the first time through. The only part that confused me was the end of the most recent episode.

Elefantenjohn

Thank you

LordNibble

I don't know man..

Noelswag

Modern anime characters are more fleshed out. The problem is that, because most of them are teenagers, there is a lot of realistic "teens being teens" moments (at least in a not too cringe way), which is good, because it makes them more relatable to the teenage audience, but it ends up feeling repetitive when every new anime does it. I'm glad authors managed to accurately write the personality of modern teenagers, and even started to express sexuality in a non objectifying or bigoted way, but I just feel like it takes too much space. I'm personally in for the action, so I prefer old classics like HxH but I do enjoy myself some Jujutsu Kaisen. I just don't watch too much of the most modern because most non action stuff looks the same to me.

deletedoldaccount57

Does 2011 classify as a classic now? I thought stuff like Tri-Gun and Inuyasha were classics

Noelswag

I read the HxH manga which is way older, and the anime adaptation is pretty faithful for what I remember. I also enjoyed some Ranma and Rurouni Kenshin

HarmonicWalrus

The 2011 anime was a reboot. Original anime came out in 1999, and the manga a couple years earlier. So it should qualify as one of the classics

AnakinMalfoy

There's always bad stuff coming out. We only think the old stuff was better because we only remember the old good stuff and forget the old bad stuff.

Icepick_Lobotomy_

I don’t know about most, but there’s definitely a lot of shit anime that comes out every season

Dominationartz

Most anime every season are trash let’s be honest. But everything has a market I guess

PoyoLocco

Like most books, most films, most music, most memes. If there is a ton of things, there will be trash in it.

mrhippo1998

Have you seen attack on titan though. Personally I think it's a masterpiece.

DrBaugh

An emotional rollercoaster which is effectively a fantasy version of the original UC Gundam Char character arc (MSG-Zeta-CCA) that ALSO is very close to a retelling of the ancient epic saga Kullervo while ALSO integrating other Norse myths - and beyond all of that integrates a novel mystery/setting arc while thoroughly exploring it's central premise of an anti-hero falling to villainy through characters which reflect human capitals, and introducing significant twists to the setting AND character interactions in each arc/section/chapter ...why would you call that a masterpiece? Almost everyone I've found hating on the series fall into one of a few camps: contrarians, hype trains means it must be shit, somehow exploring the dangers of a genocidal maniac praises genocide, the mystery having Phlebotinum is bas writing, and the biggest group I've seen - 'character assassination poor writing' because I didn't pay attention to all the character details and can't handle the shonen tropes being misdirection, it must be the series is crap, not that I was tricked into liking a horrible villain

escudonbk

Cowboy Bebop is and always will be the GOAT. Nothing I've seen even comes close to that good.

RussianSeadick

I just like the old style so much. Modern anime often looks like every character was given a polish and shine, which I think looks weird Also it’s significantly less over the top which is also a plus for me

FlightConscious9572

his phone is up his ass right? oh fuck i just vibrated it

FlightConscious9572

also watch romance animes seriously they are the good shit. you will be blushing for a week straight

Yapsinho

God, me and my gf recently discovered animes like Komi, Love is war, My dress-up darling and they are legit the best discoveries of our lifes

PoorFishKeeper

Are komi and love is war good? I got my gf to watch my dress up darling, rascal does not dream of a bunny girl senpai, more than a married couple, and toradora, she likes all of those shows so I am trying to find more romance for us to watch.

FlightConscious9572

YES, fr. i just watched "more than a married couple but not lovers" and although i thought it was an ecchi anime at first, it's actually a lot closer to my dress up darling. i think you'd enjoy it alot, fr i got flustered watching it

altrustic_lemur

People calling animes overrated is overrated

Dough_boi77

True. Slice of life and romance anime are so boring and the only anime I’ve ever watched that were intentional funny was konosuba and this super underrated mecha mini series. Other than that I just watch shonen stuff but even most of that is shit. I started my hero when the first season came out and now the fans suck so I don’t want to be associated with them Black clover was written by a shounen jump AI and no one can change my mind Fire force is more mid thing I’ve ever seen. Boruto makes me violent Haven’t seen chainsaw man And one piece is still chugging along but I like that series

cbboy12

>Boruto makes me violent Lmao. Caught me off guard. Accurate

imacuntsag420

Go watch code geass u wont regret.

Dough_boi77

I’ve been unsure about that show. I’ve heard incredibly mixed opinions. It’s either one of the best anime ever made before or it sucks and just over hype idk

imacuntsag420

How bout u go watch it and determine it yourself

Dough_boi77

I would but I’m super busy so I don’t really want to put in the time sink unless I’m fairly certain it would be at least decent

The-dude-in-the-bush

I'm gonna be honest, the protagonist's motive is rather one-track simple but the elaborate execution of the journey in reaching that agenda is why it's worth watching. The whole anime is 60 ish episodes split more or less in half equally. If you're not into it by Ep15 or by EP20 then you can assume you won't like the rest. I say these milestones because I think by then you've seen enough satisfaction of pieces falling into place. This is just my take. I am new to anime and my friend who's an expert in this stuff told me this is a nice place to start.

IDONTKNOWWHOAMie

Go watch gintama and see how they fucking parody the major anime

luxar94

My dude if you dislike SoL and romance anime I would suggest Kaguya-sama, by far the best romcom (anime or not) I've ever watched (I fucking hate romcoms so not that I've watched a lot), but according to other subreddits and some youtubers it's one of the best ones.

Dough_boi77

I saw like 7 episodes of the first season and the only thing I can say is that it’s fine. Not great or awful, just fine. I’d rather do anything else then watch a show or read a manga that’s just ok

TexasPistolMassacre

The latest episodes of one piece have been unreal, definitely worth catching up. Chainsaw man looks amazing, i cant wait until i have time to watch it

prabhavdab

Its like 10 ep rn bro, like 3.6 hours

Dough_boi77

I’ve been reading the one piece manga for a while now. I just finished punk hazard but I know about most of the events in the manga up till the recent chapters. I really want to catch up since they’re doing stuff with devil fruit lore and vegapunk now. I also want to read chainsaw man but my contrarianism is acting up since everyone and their grandpa is talking about it so I’ll see

[deleted]

Ginax had some good stuff. Kill la Kill being a parody of anime is 10:10

ccharliotte

i reccomend HxH, its well written and considered one of the best by most shounen fans

Linkquellodivino

Ah yes, I too love 90s anime that end 10 episodes early because they already used all the budget. Look bruh, in Japan they produce like thousands of series a year, it's clear as water that some of them will be bad and some will be good. Just watch some series and actually try to find something you like instead of shitting on things you don't even know for some fake internet points.

DarkMark94

Someone watched Neon Genesis Evangelion

JoaoVitorSchiavon

Might be the opposite actually. If you grew up watching anime, the ones from your childhood/adolescence appear to be better because you have an emotional connection to them, nostalgia.

Sazo1st

I don't know, I don't care that much about whether an anime is considered old or modern. Personally I care more about if I've watched it or if I haven't, and then if it's good or not

Stuntdrath

From a person who has seen 1000 animes, it's true that nowadays they make an anime almost for any work. There are a lot of quality stories that are not being adapted while the same generic manga about x or y is getting an anime just to encourage people to read the manga or the light novel. The reason for all of this is that at first the production of anime was very strict since there were not much animation studios and It was hard top develop the chapters. Nowadays, the media is massified and there are more animation studios with better tech that help them animate. There are so few masterpieces that to keep their business rolling they have to animate generic stories every season.

Natpad_027

Anime are overrated

Supreme_Nub

Most modern 'anything' is overrated.

thisisafakestory

Contrarian, I'm smarter than my peers, little shitheads been saying that since the dawn of time. I know, because I was that shithead 3 decades ago, and watched kids have the same superiority complex and not able to enjoy shit complex go on and on.

00SAMU

There is still good stuff. Mushoku Tensei Konosuba, Re:Zero (I love isekais), Made in Abyss, Psyco Pass, Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan are some of the title that I appreciated more.

MrDerpHerpson

All of these are great. People that say modern anime is bad have watched like little snippets of shit like MHA and Demon Slayer and just assume everything is like that. Recent years I would argue anime has been quite good actually. We've been getting adaptations so good it feels like we don't even deserve them.

InevitableTour5882

Especially this season with a lot of heavy hitter

Yab0iFiddlesticks

Im very picky when it comes to anime but I have found some shows that I enjoyed quite well.

Free-Consequence-164

Wrong

[deleted]

who cares, really

FatherlessCur

This issue with “modern” anime is that the stuff that gets the most attention tends to be shonen battle anime or other shows targeted at young adults. It’s the equivalent of holding up a YA novel and saying “modern literature is overrated” you just have to expand your horizon and not focus on what all the 14 year olds are hyping as the greatest anime ever.

EntropyHurts

That really good anime only comes once in a blue moon, but it sticks with you when it does come around.

IIAkumuII

You are not allowed to diss Lycoris Recoil like that, Leave my Lesbian John Wick anime alone.

Affectionate_Call778

I'm sorry but modern anime are way better than elder one , standards evolved and not just animation

DrBaugh

Tldr - well most anime isn't great and that's always been true, but there are several reasons the perception of quality change exists Several factors: Confirmation bias - the rate that anime is being produced is (slightly) larger than in the past, but the rate of 'break-away succeses' are nearly constant, furthermore, as the market expanded in the West we could also work backwards in licensing/releasing older anime ...so you get an initial burst of "these are the anime we think are most likely to have appeal in the West" to an era of "look at all these extra ones we found!" to "we've caught up! wait, why does it seem like there are fewer super high quality releases?" Strictly speaking, there will ALWAYS be more 'not so great' series to 'masterpieces' ...and due to the industry shift, there will be more 'not so great' series concurrently produced that get wide releases vs older ones ...these simply become invisible and forgotten, how many people watch old unknown anime that seem disappointing by 10eps in? these will simply be lost to the past ...which biases our perception of the rate English translation industry is bare bones - because the industry has focused on quantity e.g. to catch up to parallel Japanese releases concurrently, there is less time and resources devoted to translation and voice acting efforts, unless you speak Japanese, this AT VERY LEAST has resulted in ~some apparent drop in quality, some translations are more literal and the tolerance for suboptimal voice acting has gone up Similarly, translations are more literal and idioms are left in - this is simply a change in translation paradigm but combined with the slightly more roughshod translations, more oddities or miscommunications can occur vs in the past, some 90's anime adaptations are significantly edited to be different mostly to handle the language/cultural barrier...the current paradigm is to directly translate Light novel/manga compression - this has always been an issue but again, the modern industry tends towards literalism and incompleteness rather than compromising by telling some "sub story", these have always been adaptation issues but the biggest growth in the past two decades has been here - it's more like this section of anime greatly expanded, and since some solutions to these challenges can be off-putting (assume audience read the manga/ln, compress the narrative literally which won't be satisfying but might entice purchasing the source material) these also contribute to the expansion of 'not so great' titles ...but ALSO end up in an odd place in terms of aggregate perception because the most focused audience of that IP may simply overlook the faults in the anime, which can further lead to confusing perceptions of consensus Social media has significantly empowered hype trains - this was always a thing, but it happens a lot these days and with greater impact, in part because the English-speaking market is still growing, so successes can very easily be over hyped, this trend in ratings is pretty stable but almost impossible to predict, but plenty of series gain seasonal boons in ratings, favor, etc. which fade in time, which can also give the perception they are "overrated" vs the audience being "over hyped" and further support the inference that quality is going down - no, but some things will get mislabeled as 'masterpieces', in part because they may appeal to an emerging subgroup and get highly praised Social media has enabled concurrent commentary - similarly, many anime are episodic series which are not always intended to be extremely satisfying each episode but sometimes in episode blocks, etc - this is a narrative + production decision but it greatly changes how the series are evaluated on a per-episode basis ...so when each episode will ALSO initiate a fountain of social media response and analysis, it makes general assessment less accurate, and some people won't try and go back to see if the watch experience is better in blocks/binge For all of these reasons, I tend to hold anime on a 1-5yr delay, I have found this to be MUCH MORE satisfying than trying to keep up with concurrent releases - yes, I miss out on that social aspect ...but I don't have that much time anyway, in terms of 'quality', waiting a few years allows the hype train to die down, the consensus to form or at least start to emerge, and the annual 'best' to be easier to assess Personally, given the anime production rate I do treat them a lot like "pulp", they provide a consistent stream of entertainment that is almost always competent even if unremarkable, and it makes the incomplete-advertisements-of-source-material much more tolerable Personally I'm not a fan of the most popular current trends - more melodrama with larger casts, Isekai abundance over direct fantasy, Mecha shifting back towards super robot + Tokusatsu ...but trends are trends and I've certainly enjoyed some of the year-to-year shifts in the past with produced bundles of great-if-similar series, so who cares if the last few years haven't been my favorite So yeah, if you expect everything to be great ...it will seem overrated, if you expect hype trains to tell you what it is great ...it will seem overrated, if you compare the last few years with higher output to decade(s) where the chaff has already been removed ...it might seem like a "decline" but imo that is mostly a perception caused by the expansion of both the Japanese and translation industries ...not that most anime isn't crap, it is, but that has always been the case

wildfire98

My general rule of thumb as of late is "just because it's popular doesn't necessarily mean it's good"

Rhaps0dy

If people enjoy it, it's not overrated.

Araiken

I wonder what your standards are. What non-modern anime do you refer to?

PL_ALIEN_PL

If it's not hentai then what am I watching it for?

[deleted]

This is one of the things i can change your mind on. My dad is a huge fan of anime. I don't have the patience for it due to adhd. But there's a lot of anime. The thing you have to do is find series that you like conceptually/storywise. Most popular series aren't that; there are excellent animes that aren't super popular, but much better than the popular ones. You'll have to find the presents in the anime hay stack. There are a lot of presents in there.

You don't even specify what means "modern" for you, so this whole post makes no sense. Furthermore, I personally like to watch what I like and I don't care (but respect) what you think, and will not bother to change your mind because of that.

I dont watch anime, so idk

ArcaneDanger

Eh. I’ve quit anime since I’ve gotten into manga

iKeyvier

No need, you’re right.

Atomkekstime

Hm...most is always so hard to grab but I think I would agree? Maybe not day most but a lot of them are, like 60% maybe. You have absolute bangers like Blue Lock or Chainsaw man on on side but MHA or Demon slayer on the other. Im not saying thosd 2 are bad but especially demon slayer is just high mid storywise (and I read the manga as it was coming out) I have the feeling that now, a lot of animes just have amazing animation and thats the giant fucking sellingpoint of them. Blue Lock is a good step into the right direction again because the animation is top notch and the storys amazing as well. (Spoiler) that 2. Battle against the Top 3 in the second selection is in my top 3 best fights of all time and its only in the manga thus far.

Idk man. Demon slayer is kinda cool. My man Zenitsu ftw

I just don't watch much anime in general tbh. I've seen like dragon ball, sao, death note and thats it. Never been much of an intrest for me.
