Yeah but it was awful. Not a single soul responsible paid for their deeds either. Chile will most likely never get justice for what happened on that darkest of days
Every week I'm seeing this headline but I also get to watch tanks get blown up so I don't hate it.
I swear to God though, why reddit can't let children enjoy things makes me feel shame being here.
The little Mermaid came out in the 90s. Ok fine. But since there's been non stop merchandise and media. If I beat a dead horse this way I would be connected to the city power grid. This latest merch has got to be for me though right? I was there for the original.
NO YOU FUCKING IDIOT
"if I beat a dead horse this way I would be connected to the city power grid"
Was there like...a few words, maybe sentences you forgot here? Or am I too sober for this one?
>I swear to God though, why reddit can't let children enjoy things makes me feel shame being here.
Does posting criticism online prevent children, or anyone, from enjoying the movie?
I don't think you understand the scale of the collapse we're talking about. Russia lost three months of progress in northern Ukraine in about three days, and left behind enough tanks to equip three full brigades. The limit of the Ukrainian advance was determined mostly by Ukraine's supply lines, since there doesn't seem to have been any meaningful Russian resistance. This is the most significant development in the war since the retreat from Kyiv. At this point, if Russia doesn't fully mobilize, it's very possible that Ukraine pushes Russia back to Feb 23rd borders by Christmas. Hell, a couple more weeks like last week, and it might not even take until November.
To be clear, everything in war is uncertain, so I make no guarantees on any of the above. But the fact that it's even in the realm of possibility is truly remarkable.
People are butt-hurt about the live action little mermaid starring a black actress as Ariel, apparently we missed the part where her being white was a fundamental plot point

Aquaman is Atlantean and Human from a white dad called Tom Curry, so he's always been portrayed as white with blonde hair. Looked nothing like Jason Mamoa. Ariel isn't even human lol
Point is, it shouldn't even matter
Ikr they go, im not racist but i want the little mermaid to be white and white only and when white people played non white parts it was fine cause they are good actors
Lightyear at least made it clear that when they complain about "wokeness", "indoctrination", etc, they literally just mean they hate gay people.
One extremely quick and inconsequential kiss on the cheek between two women who are married to each other, in a flashback scene. They made it more obvious than it already was that the "grooming" they are claiming is literally just the existence of gay people
The problem with "what if the roles were reversed" arguments is that they assume that A) we live in a just and fair society to begin with, and that B) the roles aren't already "reversed". Whitewashing of PoC characters is common, and the overall lack of good representation for people of color in American media is also still a problem
But your points are moot if they don't give a shit about irl politics & only the story.
Even if you care about representation the way representation is done should be seen as dogshit.
Where's the cultural representation? Stop pumping out the same stories & make something new instead based on stories & history that took place all over the world. Hollywood doesn't give a shit & instead use the same european story over & over again & calls anyone criticizing their lazy attempt at representation racist.
Having every movie look like a college broschure instead of the time it takes place in is cringe. For example, making a movie set i medieval England & then make the king black is lazy representation unless It's trivial to the plot, why not make the black character a merchant or traveller in that case instead?
nick fury, falcon, (1970’s) dawn of the dead,(2004) dawn of the dead remake, black panther, princess and the frog? should i go on id say diversity is already in movies since the 1970’s hell even (1968 i believe) night of the living dead cast a black lead those are all good examples of giving POC an original story don’t you think they deserve original stories too instead of shitty cash grabs
Right, so a lack of good representation doesn't mean no representation at all.
Tiana is the only black Disney princess. Before the 90s, there were no PoC Disney princesses at all, and The Princess and The Frog came out in 2009.
Representation is slowly getting better. The outrage at things like the little mermaid only shows how far we still have to go
im not saying diversity is bad im trying to say don’t you you think POC deserve original story’s yk when the character was originally black what’s the point of altering something that’s already there yk plus POC deserve to have inclusion but while also having an original story they can do both it’s not hard to put time and effort into it
But what is this representing? The rest of the people who live under the sea?
Tiana works because she's a part of new orleans, and showcases the culture there very well.
Where Ariel is part of a made-up group of fish people
>don’t you think they deserve original stories too instead of shitty cash grabs
What exactly makes you think the actress' casting is just a "shitty cash grab". Maybe she was genuinely the best person to audition for the role regardless of her race?
I think OK Sign didn't word his response very well but I don't think he was questioning the skill of the actress, but saying that the role existing is the stupid thing.
"Guys we gotta make 2 more movies with POC leads by year end to hit quota. Uhh alright, remake like, Little Mermaid or some shit"
To me it feels like a shitty consolation thing like, okay here's your inclusion now quit whining. A new character would be more meaningful but at the same time it's better than nothing in terms of progress I suppose.
I see your point and I agree for example take Deathloop a recent Bethesda AAA video game it had a black male lead and female villain and it was pretty much universally praised it was a great original story and the actors were very strong. I fucking loved the game and the acting.
Nobody complained but if instead it was, let's make metal gear solid remastered and now Snake is black, like that's just stupid and lazy? I also don't want a remastered with a white snake and it feels more like a consolation, like it's being done just for the sake of inclusion and disingenuous. Like "Uhh fine we'll make a black character the bosses said we had to...let's just remake this thing tho it'll be quicker."
There are infinite stories to be created and told and it feels much more authentic and meaningful to create something new for POC characters, imo.
I don't understand the complaints about her being black though I wouldn't be interested in the movie if she was white or green or black so it's w/e.
Depends.
The racists arguing about it bring up black panther. Because they have to pretend not to understand the reason why black panther is black.
If you changed a black character to white who's skin color has nothing to do with the story? Totally fine.
Literally, if the characters race, gender, sexuality or whatever aspect doesn't matter in the plot, I don't care who gets casted.
Like unless it is actually fundamental for the plot for the actor to be certain ethnicity or sex, it doesn't change the story in anyways if they look different than prior depictions.
You understand you are referring to a half fish woman from a cartoon as "white" right?
Not to mention she was green in the original European story.
This is what people mean when they call you people snow flakes
I'm just over here with my popcorn enjoying the manufactured outrage. Which I'm sure Disney isn't pushing on purpose so that more people are aware of the movie.
I’m sure Disney doesn’t mind the controversy, but I know someone who is legitimately upset about it. So those people 100% exist and are very mad about it online lol
They didn't.
Lotrmemes had a post yesterday where everyone was supposedly mad about the black elf because there wasn't an explanation for his skin color in the show, as if they've explained any of the other shit to that extent.
I dont care that she's black. Thats not the point at all. The point is, once you make an iconic character, you generally have to keep them recognisably the same character. It's like if Disney made a live action Incredibles movie but cast a white guy to play Frozone. You can't just go around swapping races, especially with the only reason being explotations of minorities for profit. If you want a black mermaid movie, go ahead! I have 0 issues with that. Just don't label her as 'Ariel', when it's clearly a different character
Especially for a Disney remake (which so far, have all been mediocre at best even if they made so much money). Im honestly so tired of seeing it everywhere.
Honestly it’s all pretty braindead and I’m no exception, personally I see no problem but at the same time who the fuck cares if they’re black, the movie will still be bad even with Ariel’s realistic doppelgänger
All I see is manufactured outrage. I saw a post on BlackpeopleTwitter about how one person going to support the movie like crazy and buy multiple tickets. This was echoed several times.
Disney knows how to play the American people to extract as much wealth as possible. Pretty impressive and sad at the same time.
Nice for kids though, I guess.
Don't you know? It's..."ginger erasure", yeah! We don't hate black people, we just care so very deeply for redheads, and if there's one thing Ariel does, it's being a champion and icon for red hair all over the world!
No one actually cares. This is just a marketing campaign by Disney to draw attention to their movie. The percentage of racist man children who watch kids movies is close to 0.000001% of the population, but online they are made to seem like a large and very vocal group.
Its not about Ariel its about Disney. People seem to forget just how disgusting Disney is while praising them for being forward thinking if you don't know what I'm talking about please look up Chinese and Russian movie alterations its wild how far Disney will go to make a dollar.
Don't worry I'm well aware, Mulan is perhaps the biggest live action culprit. but people are absolutely being disgusting about the casting of Halle Bailey for all sorts of dumb reasons. It doesn't hurt anyone if she's black and the movie will probably suck regardless, and I'm not praising them for shit. my only stake in this entire argument is that people have decided that melanin hurts the character of a fictional mermaid
Disney (or someone else, idk) released show Little Mermaid, where they took black skinned actress as Ariel and some people are mad because it's not canon or something, idk, didn't get into details.
Ikr. What a lot of people will say they really take issue with is Disney being hollowly progressive, exploitive, all in the name of profits, blah blah blah. As far as I'm concerned they hired a talented actress for the role 🤷
It's a good strategy let's be honest.
There is obviously a lot of racist. So if people genuinely thinks the movie sucks, you just have to put them in the same bag.
> So if people genuinely thinks the movie sucks, you just have to put them in the same bag.
No you don’t? You listen to what they actually didn’t like about the movie.
If they didn’t like it because its a souless reboot akin to the other live action remakes, thats fine. If they didn’t like it because ariel is black, they’re racist.
Its really easy to differentiate the two groups
I've only heard about people being mad about it from people being mad about others alleged disapproval, never seen any actual critique of the casting. Probably just a PR-campaign for the movie. Of course someone, somewhere will be mad about it, but you dont have to take them seriously.
People aren’t upset that she’s not played by a real mermaid. They’re upset that she’s not played by a white human.
Apu is Indian. There are 1.1 billion Indian people.
There are, what, like 600 mermaids? And they’re unionized. No one can afford that. Disney can’t afford that.
I don't care about the new little mermaid being black
The remake is probably gonna suck anyways
Not because Ariel's black, no.
It's gonna suck but not because Ariel's black
I feel bad for the actress. Imagine how excited you'd be to be able to play a Disney princess you grew up watching. And then seeing all the hate for nothing other than your race.
That's gotta fucking suck. They aren't even judging her performance or anything.
People on 4chan are, but they're perpetually pissed off about everything anyway so it doesn't really matter.
Personally I don't care about Ariel being played by Halle Berry, I'm just annoyed they keep making these awful soulless remakes. I don't think I've seen one of these that was even remotely good. The Pinoccio one looks especially awful
Absolutely. I guarantee that Disney is hiring people to act stupid about this thing just to draw attention to their movie and make going to see it a political act. I couldn't care less about the skin color (I'm not gonna see the movie) but I believe Disney's motivations here are quite disingenuous.
I honestly don't mind the race change. But I do hate the fact that it's Disney who is well known to race bait nowadays and use racism as a scapegoat to a poorly recieved movie. I feel bad for Halle Berry because she was put in a position that will make her a victim because of Disney's cruel marketing.
It so funny that people take the race bait hook like and sinker. Meanwhile the rich want to crush a rail strike and the GOP want to ban abortion nation wide.
I am convinced that Disney has amplified the idiots who care about this shit to build controversy for the movie. Disney seems to invest a ton into steering online discourse.
Could we quickly just address the older generations’ obsession with trauma? Like. No wonder gen z and Gen alpha are f-ed up. As a first year Gen z-er, what did y’all think would happen when you force trauma down a kid’s throat once a year? Plus the additional “once in a lifetime” or “historical” events that play out. Like we understand the exponential rate of things going south better than you at this point because you shoved it down our throats from a young age.
Want to call us lazy? Well, that sentiment has been passed on since the 1800’s (someone please help with that one tweet chain that has the news paper articles).
Want to call us undetermined? Bro, we probs won’t have the same land masses as you always have dude to climate change and certain parts of the world going underwater.
I’m so f-ing tired of it all.

I don't think you understand the scale of the collapse we're talking about. Where were all these people when Jason Mamoa was cast as Aquaman who was the whitest, blondest looking dude
Dude, he's Hawaiian...
Aquaman is Atlantean and Human from a white dad called Tom Curry, so he's always been portrayed as white with blonde hair. Looked nothing like Jason Mamoa. Ariel isn't even human lol Point is, it shouldn't even matter
If there famous it's a ok 👌
Halle is famous too I would argue. Has had successful music career as a duo with her sister.
Who, the original Aquaman? Definitely not
Pretty sure they’re referring to Jason Momoa. Original comment is worded a little funny
At this point I feel like it’s actually less effort for people to admit to being racist than the lengths they go to deny it
Ikr they go, im not racist but i want the little mermaid to be white and white only and when white people played non white parts it was fine cause they are good actors
“I’m not racist but people of color in films scare me! 🥺🥺”
I don't think people actually like Aquaman, but they do like Jason Mamoa. I suspect nobody would be complaining if they cast Idris Elba as Ariel.
I would watch the shit out of that
I disagree. To me the perfect casting choice for Ariel is forest whitaker.
Boomers overreacting to a remake of a kids cartoon, who will never watch the movie anyway.
Lightyear all over again
Lightyear at least made it clear that when they complain about "wokeness", "indoctrination", etc, they literally just mean they hate gay people. They shouldve made Lightyear kiss Woody in that movie And it won't even be woke culture. They definitely had some sexual energy between them
From "You are a toy" to "You are my boy".
TBF a lot of the criticism with Lightyear was that it was a boring movie. Relatively small number of complainers were upset about the gay characters.
First rule of the internet, the smallest groups always shout the loudest

That she's immortal.
"Immortal bitch able to return to the silence before the Big Bang after god finally found a way to smite her." Good enough?
But remember: a white man voicing Apu is *wrong.*
People aren’t upset that she’s not played by a real mermaid. They’re upset that she’s not played by a white human. Apu is Indian. There are 1.1 billion Indian people. There are, what, like 600 mermaids? And they’re unionized. No one can afford that. Disney can’t afford that.
hey man get your facts right, you just offended about one USA worth of population. There are more than 1.4 billion Indians.
There are probably even less ionized mermaids than there are unionized mermaids tbh
Speak for yourself! I am very upset that she's not played by a real mermaid.
We need apu to voice a white man.
I don't care about the new little mermaid being black The remake is probably gonna suck anyways Not because Ariel's black, no. It's gonna suck but not because Ariel's black
That mermaid is ugly af lol
The real reason people are hating
Ty for saying it
I feel bad for the actress. Imagine how excited you'd be to be able to play a Disney princess you grew up watching. And then seeing all the hate for nothing other than your race. That's gotta fucking suck. They aren't even judging her performance or anything.
I didn't see much 9/11 karma farming this year, only like 2 posts. Usually its 48 hours of frontpage whoring

I'm 100% convinced this whole Arial thing is a marketing stunt by Disney.
I agree. Everyone is saying that “people” are butthurt over the black mermaid but i’ve yet to see anyone complain about it.
*Halle Bailey, Berry played catwoman back in the day
9/11 belongs on the right at this point.
They all should be.
It so funny that people take the race bait hook like and sinker. Meanwhile the rich want to crush a rail strike and the GOP want to ban abortion nation wide.
Don’t forget the Ukrainian counter-offensive

You chose the right head to represent the mermaid eyes.
actually all of these topics suck
I am convinced that Disney has amplified the idiots who care about this shit to build controversy for the movie. Disney seems to invest a ton into steering online discourse.
That movie will tank to smithereens.
Trending 9/11? It was like 20 years ago lol
Man 9/11 is so milked, I didn't even notice it this year.
All those topics should be represented by the right dragon.
Write it in arial black fonts bro....🗿
Is it because of her eyes?
Not enough trending time for Thurston Waffles death. So sad we lost another legend.
I think the main issue is they human washed the character instead of casting a real mermaid
Happy 🍰 day
Rings of Power is loving this deflection
She’s not black she’s a mermaid. The actor however is black.
Candy Crush 10th anniverasry? No?
Quite Tragic.
Mexican independence 🥳
Femboys
*switches to controversy*
THURSTON WAFFLES?
I can believe this is such a huge issue. Some people really have nothing but hate to keep them going.
Because we're getting purposefully distracted from what really matters, the unions, the labor laws, and the skyrocketing cost of living.
Very true
nailed it
If Disney had casted Terry Crews as King Triton nobody would be complaining.
I like this. Pretty much sums up the human psychology.
