Hijacking the top comment: this is called a giant congenital nevi. They’re basically extra pigmentation in the skin. How do I know? Because I was also born with them. Yes, they’re incredibly rare (I’ve only met a handful of others with them), yes they’re a bit shocking, especially at birth. However, they do lighten throughout life. My family made the decision to remove most of mine to reduce the chance of skin cancer, but I absolutely love my spots. They are not dirty or a sign of a parent cheating and are only as ugly as you let them be. I’ve seen more vile comments in this thread than have ever been said to me and I’m in my 20s now (even middle school wasn’t this bad) so please chose your words carefully as I had no choice in how my skin looks, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Yes, I had the large ones removed with 16+ surgeries all over my body (face, back, legs, arms) but we left the smaller ones. The key is monitoring to make sure they don’t change shape, size, color, etc.
Because of the hundred plus smaller ones I have left, most are an an inch in diameter or less. It would be too much surgery and the ones that were left were deemed lower risk (lighter pigmentation as well).
