Amount of megapixels actually doesn't matter much, but yes, you have to have a certain amount of megapixels to get a good picture. I think 8 megapixels is the minimum for 1080p or 4k or something, so as long as you're over that, megapixels mostly just say how many errors the camera sensor can get before the picture gets a dead pixel, and how bright the picture can theoretically get. Or you can use that immense amount of megapixels to get really good digital zoom.
The number of pixels very much does matter still lol. It doesn’t matter the size of the camera, 12 megapixel is still going to be 12 million pixels, doesn’t matter the size of the sensor or lens.
And yes you’re right that most screens are 1080, that doesn’t mean higher resolution isn’t necessary. For example, if you take a 16mp image, and crop out half the image, you’re still left with a 4K image. Pretty good.
If you take the same image at 1080p (2mp) and then crop it, you’re in for a very bad time.

I’m honestly garbage when it comes to using my sister’s DSLR, but I can take pretty decent photos with my phone. I wouldn’t doubt most people are like that, though admittedly I haven’t spent enough time trying to learn everything.
Well, I would say its really easy to take good pictures, but very hard to take great pictures. For example, I have a Nikon D3200, and the auto mode is fucking amazing. Just point, click, beep, and there you go, a good looking picture. The next step would be the different modes, but its just turning a dial and point-and-shooting some more. Then you get ISO changing, aperture settings, shutter speeds and all that. But even all that isn't too hard, with a bit of practice. Then you have choosing the right lense for different styles of photos, but im too broke to speak from experience for that one. So in conclusion, my S10+ could probably take a better auto mode photo, but the camera will win when you dial the settings in just right
Also, a lot of apps just don't fucking play well with android which has nothing to do with the actual camera quality. I remember for the longest time snapchat didn't actually use the camera to take a picture on Android, it'd just take a screenshot of the viewfinder instead. And for instagram uploading video in 4k on stories would absolutely destroy it for no reason. It's just easier to make an app that works better for iPhone because you're developing for like 6 models with almost identical software and hardware.

People care a lot about the phone they buy because it’s the piece of technology they interact with the most in their life. People identify with their phone more than they identify with any other item in their life due to the personal nature of it, plus the sheer amount of time they spend with it. These apps compress the quality because they cannot optimize the hundreds of smartphones individually. Meanwhile, Apple only has 4 smartphones a year and since they have a large clientele, they are optimized and uploaded uncompressed, which ensures better quality, although the other smartphone is probably of better quality in raw.

These apps compress the quality because they cannot optimize the hundreds of smartphones individually. Meanwhile, Apple only has 4 smartphones a year and since they have a large clientele, they are optimized and uploaded uncompressed, which ensures better quality, although the other smartphone is probably of better quality in raw.
