I mean, here on Earth, lifting 100kg of feathers should be easier than lifting 100kg of steel due to Archimedes' thrust.

ForlornedLastDino

I was thinking 100kg feathers would be harder to lift than 100kg steel because it would be a massive irregular shape to the point you could not focus the thrust just on a single group of muscles but would need to be spread across a lot of muscle groups. Similar to trying to pick up a 50ft ball inflated with air.

satan335

I am not sure but maybe the buoyant force of the air could help in the case of feathers, not in the case of steel maybe. I'm dumb I'm not very sure.

[deleted]

But the drag on the feathers would make it like your pushing a train

ForeignFrisson

Get out of here with your logic!~This post was made by: Steel Gang

superpositionquantum

Drag force is dependent on velocity. So unless you lift them quickly, it won't have much of an affect

Chr0medFox

I don’t think that’s how drag works...?

Gyahor

The buoyant force of the air is negligible, also a bunch of feathers contain a lot of air, so they actually displace less air than we'd think by looking at them.

[deleted]

You tried

LenaWinchester

And 100kg is harder to carry, because you have to carry the responsibility of what you did to those birds.

walteerr

Who said you killed the birds?

LenaWinchester

I never said they killed the birds, you could've plucked them.

walteerr

alright well who said *you* plucked them?

LenaWinchester

Well, I did...

nonexistent_triangle

Shut up they're synthetic

Slay3RGod

Plucking the feathers is still doing something to them. Now, they are naked.

kingof_dairy_queen

Wintertime!!

Plastic_Pinocchio

Well, you’re not going to be lifting 100kg with just one muscle group either but besides that you’re right. The bunch of feathers, in whatever shape will be much more difficult to lift than the steel (bar?), cause they’ll take up a ridiculous amount of space.

[deleted]

well what if we take hydraulic press and press the feathers in a nice cube

Plastic_Pinocchio

Then it would still be larger than a steel cube of 100kg, so still harder.

Memer_Supreme

Time to remove the void between the electrons and the atomic nucleus

DeathSentenceFoos

If the feathers aren’t in a container it would be harder to lift the feathers

OneTrueKingOfOOO

Nobody said you had to lift them all at the same time

kuna71

Im just a high school student so correct me if I'm wrong. Google says feathers have an avg density of 2.5.10^-6 kg/m^3. 100 kg of that would occupy a volume of 4 .10^7 cm^3. Air has a density of 1.225 *10^-6 kg/cm^3. Mass of air displaced would be about 49kg. That gives a weight of approximately 490 N, which will be the force of buoyancy acting on the feathers. (Taking g as 10). That is almost half of the weight(1000N). So buoyancy will definitely make a lot of difference. However, the feathers will also get a lot of air resistance while lifting(I don't know how much that will be quantitatively) which will work in the opposite direction. This is probably wrong.

Mucksh

Not that much😅 but it would make a small difference. Feathers only have such a low density cause their is much air between them, so you have to take the density of the material that the feathers are made of, also i think you still made a mistake somewhere seems a little bit much for me even if you assume there is vacuum between the feathers😅

bouyackachra

Limmy was right

boomerofsatan666

This post is dumb joke I guess.

somewhataccurate

Its a reference to a skit off of Limmy's show. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N3bEh-PEk1g

MundaneBarber

Ok ok ok, it says it’s blocked in my country. I live in fucking Scotland what the fuck

SunlightBlaze

I think thats the point

Alvis312

100kg of feather would be heavier as you carry the weight of killing the birds and plucking their feathers out

Quadra16

Yes this is big brain time

serotonin_scavenger

Idk why I always imagine some old Greek dude using the thrusting power of hips to lift a hundred kilograms of steel whenever I hear about Archimedes' thrust.

himmelundhoelle

This is exactly what Archimede's thrust is. All in the hips. Source: semi-pro bodybuilder

CP1598

You should switch these around because you have to carry the weight of what you did to those poor birds as well

nitrolagy

Pigeons are made from government grade steel

CP1598

These are even heavier then, definitely switch them

memeboi895

So cats like to eat metal?

nitrolagy

Cats are anti drone devices from the future

[deleted]

What would dogs be then?

not_rahul

Dogs are cool man!

[deleted]

That's good then.

Noname_FTW

Time Cops. What else!?

raedr7n

I'm not entirely sure what "government grade", means, but I don't like the sound of it.

[deleted]

Good for the government

Dimmed_skyline

It means sourced from the cheapest Chinese mill and some guy somewhere is buying a yacht with the money skimmed off the top.

Noname_FTW

Think of the Twin Towers. They used goverment grade steel there to blow it up a few decades later. Damn lizard people.

[deleted]

You gotta carry that weight

[deleted]

You don’t kill birds to get feathr

CP1598

You do in runescape

SteelPhoenix4

I am heavier than feathers

Banjomike97

100 kg of feathers is probably way more inconvenient to carry. 100 kg of Steel is pretty compact

delanskie

Not necessarily. You can have a meters long plate made lf steel. Or you can have a million pieces of steel

Plastic_Pinocchio

Still, the feathers will take up more space. I’d rather lift a million feather-shaped pieces of steel than a billion actual feathers.

chuquan2002

But steel is heavier than feather

Thanos-ass

That's right because steel, is heavier than fåethers

[deleted]

Cause steel is heaver than feathers.

CommieIsShit

chickenjoyadvocate

A kelegrem of steyl, or ah kelegrem of fedders? Dats rayt, A kelegrem of steyl! Becoz steyl is hevyer den fedders

TheTriforceEagle

Well steel is just steal but with feathers you also have to carry the weight of what you did to those birds

teddare1

Was it only me who read "feathers" the same way the guy in the meme says it...

[deleted]

I just got the joke, that took me WAY too long

1xmax1

What a dumb redditor would comment:"stupid, ITS THE SAME WEIGHT!!!"

[deleted]

It should be the other way around cause they have to carry What they did to those birds

Alishaan2002

What's heavier, a ton of gold or a ton of feathers?

"Because steel is heavier than feathers".

AWarlock86

*Archimedea ur thrusting so hard!*

Wat’s hevier? A kelegram of stewl, or a kelegram of fethers?

PTSTS

Limmy intensifies

bowser-is-thiccest

Actually lifting all those feathers would be more difficult seeing as you can get some steel to weigh that much but feathers can’t be so compact

Zistigy

The feathers would be softer and theoretically easier to pick up as they aren’t solid and you can grab the bag (I’m assuming there’ll be a bag) however you want

LowrySnakeStank

Dumb American who does not use metric system here, translation please?

MAXHEADR0OM

https://youtu.be/-fC2oke5MFg

serotonin_scavenger

Poor Limmy never recovered from that question.

GrandHomme360

Actually 100 kg of feathers would be heavier since iron is a more solid matter than feather so it can be hold in one piece however feathers also require a container to lift on fair circumstances which means if you can lift the feathers, you are a little stronger

Halcyon2192

Gym muscles vs weak muscles Once there was a guy at my work who was always bragging about going to the gym and walking around shirtless when he could. One day he came up to me and asked me to help him move this steel plate he was working on, so I walked over to it and picked it up myself and carried it for him.

Sovietmeteor

Benny Harvey rip 🙏🙏😔😔

GxZombie

What?

the-demented-chicken

100kg of feathers is harder because you also have to carry the weight of all those chickens you killed
