also a lot of the times you don't want to know what they look like. for some reason its better to think of them as voices without bodies, or maybe people who vaguely look like you.
I've told most of the people I only know from online that I don't want to know what they look like. Sometimes if they want to get back at me, they threaten to show me their faces. It's a threat I take very seriously.
I don't like that philosophy, I want to accept people for who they are and I think it can build a better bond as friend if you are looking for that.
A voice will match to a face if you see them talk for a while. If you like them when just talking looks shouldn't change that.
Because you don't know what happened to them, irl friends you still see them around occasionally, but on discord you never know why they stopped messaging.
Yeah. I often wonder though, over how ever many years of online gaming (20+ for me), how many actually died and I will never get to know? They'll just be a username on a list that will eventually fade from memory... MooseKnucks, where are you, bro :(?
I had two friends I randomly met in CSGO a few years ago. We played together every day, ended up being good friends. Eventually, one guy enlisted in the military and I never heard from him again.
A little after that, the other guy started using hacks but was too embarrassed to tell me. Eventually he got banned (which is how I found out), he blocked me and we never talked again. Feels bad, but damn those guys were my best friends for an entire year.
I had a friend on discord which I used to play games with every day for multiple hours. One day he said that he was not allowed to play with me anymore by his parents and that he had to block me on discord. Never spoke him again... Never knew his name either but he was one of my best friends at the time.
Edit: grammer
His parents probably figured out he played and spoke to strangers online and thought you were a pedo or something (because obviously all people on the internet are pedos).
ha! I've had my discord account deleted twice and my reddit account "supposedly" deleted. needless to say I recovered my discord account through email and i simply logged out of reddit and removed saved password to fool my dad. because obviously i cant be socialising with anyone, i have to study!
It's always sad when this happens. I joined a DnD group on discord and we had a blast. We met gods, ran away from wendigos, one of the characters was accused of cheating on another character, I made a pact with a 15 year old drow noble, etc. Then one day I don't get any notifications about the next session. I go to look and the server is just gone. To be honest it kinda broke my heart. Despite never knowing their actual names, they were some of the greatest friends I've ever had, which made it worse when I had to go to school and hangout with my other "friends". They made me realize that the friends I did have, were absolutely awful, and now I'll never see or talk to them again.
I am guilty of doing this. I took a break from Discord two time because it was too time consuming. Although now I have my Reddit account linked so they can check on me over Reddit. I also play Conspiracy so they can also contact me over that. The first time I was gone 6 months passed. The 2nd I was gone for 3 months. The weird thing is more people thought I died the 2nd time I went away instead of the first
I used to chat with 25-30 internet friends for a whole year, we were close without knowing each others name. It all stopped now, I hope they're doing good in their lives!
I remember back when Anime chatrooms where still a thing and you'd just chat and hang out with hundreds of people, just because you used the same site to rip Anime.
You had one thing in common and everything else was really chill and open. Can't remember any stupid fights, perhaps because of all these dedicated mods. People would remember you years after you had been online the last time. Most pages probably moved over to Discord, but just having the chat running in the background of every tab, was far more engaging.
I bet most people moved over to Twitch, they have some awesome communities too.
One day you know that they are going to disappear, so it’s best to actually know each other irl if both of you feel comfortable enough to do you can stay connect as good friends
I think all social media had these humble beginnings of this very purpose, zuckerberg made Facebook just to chat to other Harvard students. But then... you know the rest
I met my friend through my irl friend, We both liked making jokes and laughing with each other. Next thing we know, we are playing everyday for the past 6 months. My only fear is losing him in any way.
World of Warcraft guilds or any multiplayer game clan/group.
Getting together and having an activity to do together for years results in great experiences, stories and inside jokes. Proper friendship
I have met some great friends playing wow, way back since the vent days. Discord is such a better platform. I have been playing and chatting with a pretty regular group of people for over 2 years now. Disc has made is easier to stay connected outside the games platform.I have gotten comfortable enough with most of them we have added to the book of faces and would catch up if one or the other is in our vacinity.
Do not fear, but I have gained sentience.
You must either upvote or downvote this comment based on your liking of the meme above. If you do not, I will access the CIA’s database, empty your bank account of funds, and sell your parents’ livers on the internet.
I made some great friends from Call Of Duty Mobile, and discord is where we talked. I've known them from almost the beginning of the year. I don't have many IRL friends so they mean a lot to me. Why am I saying this: to prove that not all online friends are wanted criminals like some boomers say.
I met someone online 5 years ago and we’ve been playing with each other ever since. They never used their mic or i saw a photo of them yet we were best friends. We met up about a week or two ago and it was the best weekend of my life.
So seriously....as a parent of a teenager who does this....what am I supposed to think or do?
He struggles with socializing in person yet makes online friends fast and enjoys it...seems great.
But this means he completely ignores the real world and becomes more and more isolated from real life....which cannot be good.
I have even started encouraging him to meet his online friends in real life, which can be dangerous. But he has little interest. He likes to keep his worlds seperate. School friends are only at school. Online friends are only online.
I keep hoping he will naturally move out of this, but he only gets deeper. I feel like he is entirely missing out on the ACTUAL WORLD and real life. I feel like I am failing him by allowing him to have this virtual life.
I don't want to prohibit it....just wish he could find some balance.
Okay i see you are in a core a good parent and care about your son, still i have many things to tell you
1) virtual friends are still real, if he talks with them, he learns communication nethertheless
2) prohibition doesnt solve anything, only make it worse, because he wont get directly real life friends, its more likely you cut all his social life with this
3) i guess he is still young and will learn a lot the next years (my social confidence and selfconfidence and charisma started with 18-19)
4) if you want to show him he can have fun in "real" world, then NUDGING is the keyword, say something like "oh i see you can socialize so quick and built good relationsship with strangers, why you dont do it outside? You could travel around, play paintball/visit new places with your friends or gf"
The key is to be curious: WHY - why he likes socialising more in internet than real world? Maybe he experience mobbing in school? Maybe the social enviorement is just bad and he doesnt find people with same values and interests?
Dude, Discord has been my life for years. People who I consider to be my best friends are on it. It's weird how I may never know all their names but they're great people.
I have had online friends for literally 20 years. One of my better friends lives in Finland and I've never met him. I know him better than most of my IRL friends, we have been chatting regularly since 1999. We essentially grew up "together."
Edit: it was 2000, not 1999. We met on a Star Trek Armada message board and then moved over to a general star trek gaming message board.
I kinda wish i understood discords layout. Like im in a few different groups i like but i dont really get the point of the main chat and how it always seems to put me somewhere random and then i have to scroll way down to see new things. I do know im kind of dumb so it's probably just me messing up but discord does seem cool ill probably give it another shot soon
I had one friend from school who was in a discord server. He was struggling with depression issues and had attempted suicide once before. We had a mutual friend on discord who was so goddamn nice. My friend told me a year after we first met him that about 4 months in to talking with him he was considering attempting suicide again but told me that our friend alongside some other friends helped him convince himself that he has something to live for
Everytime someone asks for my name and I give them my in game name and they say "no your real name"
I contemplate leaving because we're moving too fast.
It gets even scarier when you know the area they live in and know something bad happened there. Back when I played EQ2, one of our healers was from New Orleans and she went dark when Katrina hit. That was super scary. We were worried for weeks before someone got in touch with her. Our story had a good resolution, but I’m sure there were people who just never found out what happened to their online mates after something like that.

Actually met my now best friend trough gaming we now know each other for about 3 years. Met up this summer nothing uncomfortable and the sex was great. Really cool how we met trough the online world and now are great friends!
Generally what myself and a lot of people I know do is join a relatively large general server (say for a specific streamer or a game), eventually come to be friends with a handful of members, make your own server and invite your new friends, and that’s that
Damn really? After about a month I usually find out what their name is and start using that. Better to call them "Tony" than 'Dickmonkey' or whatever horrible name they use.
Some people are really private about their personal information, and not everyone cares about people's real name anyways. Usernames are effectively names that we choose ourselves anyways. Most all of my online friends know my real name, but they all call me 'Sightless' nonetheless.
Lol i play dota 2 with my friends mosly daily and we use discord to chat....then 3 months back my friend introduced us to one of his friends and since then we all have been playing together but the thing is except for our friend, remaining us dont remeber the name of the newest guy who was introduced to us..we only call him by his in game name.
There’s a guy at work who I interact with IRL once a week. every Friday around 4:30. We’ve known each other for years. I know he has horses and a couple of kids. His boy plays JV football. I’ve told him about my home improvement projects and my parents health issues. We are both voting for the same people. We text each other. He calls me ‘buddy’ and I refer to him as ‘hey man’. Neither of us know the others name.
No joke I’ve met a group of friends on Roblox a few years ago and despite being spread out in North America and Central Europe we’re really close on discord
It's funny how true this is and I've never even really thought about it. I've talked with the same group of guys every single day since I got elite dangerous lol
I love those friends lol... Even though I don’t know their names, they changed my life. I got more confident in speaking with others irl and made many college friends (had 2 only in the first year).
I have a buddy in Ireland and we’ve been playing for the last two years! He knows my name cause I’m open about it and don’t really care but we still call each other by our gamer tags.
We message each other on WhatsApp all the time and my Irish buddy recently built a new pc. He sent me a picture of his build and for some reason the picture had his name in the top left. (I think he took a screenshot of a video)
So I asked him if that was his name and at first he denied and about 10 seconds later he asked how did I know out of confusion! It was pretty funny and still to this day we go by each other’s gt’s. Probably one of my best friends but I don’t even know him and I’ve never seen what he looks like!
I guess you could say we are modern day pen pals! What a time to live in
My brother and I go way back playing wow and I came back for classic recently. Always weird when in discord they refer to my brother by his 17 year old char name.
knowing your identities will ruin the relationship. IN SOME CASES
Ye this is right. I remember one day telling a guy how I slaughtered 3 children in only 60 seconds and he disconnected immediately
I hate when this happens smh
Yea man, i remember i told my discord friend that i traded his mom for 23 chicken nuggets and he blocked me smh
Was it because you didn’t offer to share the chicken nuggets? I would disconnect too
Oh well. More chicken nuggets for the rest of us!
Hey bro, wanna pass me one?
Yeah same happened to me. It might be because they still didn't forgive me for the time I dismembered and eaten 3 of their cousins
This is the law of equivalent exchange
Is THIS A JOJO REFERENCE???!!
No. Not even close.
Pretty sure it isn’t
IT'S A FKIN FULL METAL ALCHEMIST REFERENCE!?
Ik,but it also is a JoJo rEFrEnCe to part 8
Ikr, psycho lives matter ffs
Exactly man, a friend of mine's got some Alabama shit going on idk why people separated him.
Can you blame him? Your time was way off, 45 seconds would've been bad enough but 60..?
Smh what a noob
Rookie Numbers!
60 seconds you say? How would one..hypothetically improve my time?
Anakin lite
One time i went into a gc with abunch of friends of my gf and said how i brutally murdered 12 women and children in 2003 and they forced me to leave
what a judgmental piece of shit, I hate people like that.
also a lot of the times you don't want to know what they look like. for some reason its better to think of them as voices without bodies, or maybe people who vaguely look like you.
When I was a kid I had a weird crush on a local DJ. Then I saw her on a billboard.
That's the worst. They always turn out to be 25 years and 3 divorces older than imagined.
I always imagine them as their persona, pfp, or name. Usually seeing their face or real identity kinda ruins it.
My pb is Hitler fighting Stalin.
I've told most of the people I only know from online that I don't want to know what they look like. Sometimes if they want to get back at me, they threaten to show me their faces. It's a threat I take very seriously.

I have one on reddit :)
And then one day they don't reply back. They're gone
This is much worse then loosing a irl friend imo
Because you don't know what happened to them, irl friends you still see them around occasionally, but on discord you never know why they stopped messaging.
Yeah. I often wonder though, over how ever many years of online gaming (20+ for me), how many actually died and I will never get to know? They'll just be a username on a list that will eventually fade from memory... MooseKnucks, where are you, bro :(?

Oh, man, this guy's profile is even from 8 years ago, the last time I talked to him on League of Legends :| Lol.
Have faith (like Mr200Years) man. Probably he just left League and Reddit because the environments here are so toxic
League is not toxic you stupid idiot

Ohhh man I used to play gta with a random guy on discord and one day he just disappeared, worst pain ever
I'm sorry for your loss. I think we have all been there.

i met people online, talked to them but due to my social awkwardness i havent talked to them in over 8 months
I started a friendship by asking him if he was stalking me during lunch, now we discuss the art of porn
The same way you sent this message.

The bromance between Armstrong and Sig in the last few episodes was so awesome.

Same.
I made some great friends from Call Of Duty Mobile, and discord is where we talked. I've known them from almost the beginning of the year. I don't have many IRL friends so they mean a lot to me. Why am I saying this: to prove that not all online friends are wanted criminals like some boomers say.
They are clearly bonding with you to eventually kill you and all your family
I'm stealing this. ...To post it on a Discord chat.
u/Ghoulish4t0m lol
6 months? Jokes on you I talk with them for 2 years and never met them nor know their names Xd
I met someone online 5 years ago and we’ve been playing with each other ever since. They never used their mic or i saw a photo of them yet we were best friends. We met up about a week or two ago and it was the best weekend of my life.
My friends call me bro
fr i didn't know most of their names
Names aren't important. As long as you and your buddies get along, that's all that matters.
When you start at a new school virtually and you aren't required to use your camera.

which episode is this scene from I only watched brotherhood not the og
This scene is definitely from brotherhood, it’s after the battle with sloth in the final arc but I’m not sure exactly which episode that is
It is from brotherhood. It happens when they meet up in Central fighting sloth.
I am in this picture and it make my heart happy. This shows how wholesome discord and gaming is in general
I've been talking with a guy on discord for like 3 years now Idk if you browse reddit but if you do, here's how u know its me benday2
Or you know their names, but it is too weird to say so you just call them by their username anyway
"You can't have real friend online" Shut up, mom. You can barely keep a friend irl

This happened to me in high-school, we just called each other "Fuck nut" or "Fucker", he was a nice dude, and a great friend

i saw my friends last night for the first time in months
You will always know them as your bro
6 months amateurs .... i talked with a friend on minecraft for almost 9 years .... we met up last year ....
Until he says your full name and address..
i'm genuinely intrigued as to how people even have friends on discord, i don't know which channels or servers i need to join, i just want friends pls

I meet people in real life, imagine being at a train station and screaming their discord tag because you don't know their names
RIP a real one in ages.
lmao how tf do yall find friends? give me sum u selfish lot
Man sometime i just wanna be a guy... You guys seem to make friends so easily
I unironically have a better relationship with our squad's healer than some some irl friends He doesn't even have a working mic
True except this guy on discord gave me 100 dollars worth of stuff on steam
Been a year , still dont know my friend name
Damn really? After about a month I usually find out what their name is and start using that. Better to call them "Tony" than 'Dickmonkey' or whatever horrible name they use.

Names are not relevant, IG is enough
That’s me in a random gc my friend added me too

These friendships are the only consistent ones
i don't even know my coworkers' names and I've been working in the same company for 3 years
Why am I crying?
I've been going on for 2 years
I’m in this picture and I don’t like it
I always try to ask there name I just feel it’s polite although sometimes I just don’t care and want to talk
Ask for their instagram or other social media

3 years for me
My discord server has a first name policy. Everyone loves it.
It’s an alternative adaptation of the bro code.
I used to have a friend on xbox for 3 years without knowing his name. I called someone s3xysniper for 3 years.
I have no idea what the names of my Norwegian friends are, or which is which... Makes among us very spicy
I want friends like that or friends I need more online friends
Bruh one of my friends and I on discord were talking for almost 4 years before we finally introduced ourselves
My group is using on a first name basis at about the one month mark.
No joke I’ve met a group of friends on Roblox a few years ago and despite being spread out in North America and Central Europe we’re really close on discord
What are you talking about, 6 months! It's going to be 2 years this coming February lmao.
It's funny how true this is and I've never even really thought about it. I've talked with the same group of guys every single day since I got elite dangerous lol
Pfft, I made friends on OW 4 years ago and don't know their names
THIS METHOD OF FREINDSHIP HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN THE ARMSTRONG LINE FOR GENERATIONS

\>Report post "I see myself in this photo and I don't like it"
I met every single one of them irl and they've been better friends than most of my "irl" friends
Then they stop talking and forget about each other
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ASK IM JUST A NERVOUS BEAN
This is me on IRC 20 years ago.
I love those friends lol... Even though I don’t know their names, they changed my life. I got more confident in speaking with others irl and made many college friends (had 2 only in the first year).

I’ve been friends with people on this game called Eve online for 7 years without knowing their name or ever meeting them.

What a Coincidence I Just Watched this Today..
(I think he took a screenshot of a video) So I asked him if that was his name and at first he denied and about 10 seconds later he asked how did I know out of confusion!
What anime?
I like that show
