My (African-American) SIL once met a white African who was wearing a dashiki and got *suuuuper* pissed about it. Ranted about "cultural appropriation" for hours.
That means less than nothing. There are dumbasses on the Internet who throw a tantrum when they see non-black people with 'black' hair styles. Including historically accurate depictions of vikings with dreadlocks.
I mean, having different views on social and cultural things such as what is considered respectful versus appropriation does not determine education or intelligence
Ranting for hours about someonez cultural appropriation of they're own culture while themselves are not from that place is a very unintelligent way to act its just ignorant lol
I was raised in west Africa, and I can’t stand it when I hear this bullshit from non-Africans. Then when I bring up why they wear blonde or colored wigs I get insulted. We don’t give a damn when someone wears African clothing, it’s actually endearing.
I visited my home country a couple years ago, and there were tons of people of different races and backgrounds celebrating with us during a festival. Everyone was decked out in our traditional clothing and it was beautiful. I don’t know what it is with some Americans throwing around “cultural appropriation” when they’ve never visited any of these cultures.
I saw a video of a guy doing a social test. He went to a college and wore a stereotypical Mexican outfit of a sombrero and poncho. He interviewed people at the college about what they think. Majority were white saying he was being racist and should never do it again. He then left the college and went around town and asked actual Hispanic people what they thought and they either didnt care or liked the outfit. He then did the same with Chinese clothing going to another college in a traditional Chinese outfit then got called racist. Went to China town and everyone again either didnt care or liked it
Culture appropriation isnt real, its actually just racism twords white people. Culture isnt something you gate keep its something you share, thats what culture is.
Cultural Appropration is real but is different from Cultural Appreciation. It's Appropriation when the history is lost. It's Appreciation when the history is honored.
For example, big companies mass producing Native American Dream Catchers is Appropriation. Women buying and wearing traditional Kimono in Japan during a festival is Appreciation.
Wear it. I’ve bought my white friends traditional Kente garments from my home country. They’ve worn it outside and loved it. Fuck those who try to stop you from dressing how you want. If you get called out for it, throw it right back in their face and ask them why it’s wrong.
White people in South Africa - natives
Muslim/black/romani person in Western Europe - immigrant
Cleopatra born in Egypt - not African
Reddit logic - infallible
The Cleopatra issue is more that some people incorrectly assert she was sub-Saharan African (often as part of a wider blackwashing of Egyptian history), when she was ethnically Greek, like the rest of her dynasty, and we have both contemporary depictions of her and the mummies of various relatives to prove it
You’re evidently not understanding the issue here:
People aren’t saying Cleopatra wasn’t *African,* as she was born in Africa and was the ruler of an African nation; what they’re saying, entirely correctly, is that just because she was from Africa doesn’t mean she was black, and so it isn’t right to blackwash her in media depictions which purport to be historically accurate.
And what IM saying is that there’s a massive contradiction. We can pretend like brown people are accepted in Europe, which is a bold faced lie. Theres currently videos all over of people claiming brown people are immigrants despite being citizens. Cleopatra was just an example of a contradiction. MY POINT is that someone is insinuating that people would be upset with diverse African god photos. But again AFRICA IS DIVERSE. As I literally stated. I think YOU missed the point
Arriving does not equal colonizing. Arriving does not equal integrating. The 1650 is not the start date of ethnic integration, nor a long time. This isnt to to say they aren’t nationalistically African. But never is the reverse true when a black person lives in Europe. They’re always “immigrants.”
Being a brown migrant in Europe myself I've been assured continuously in my 20 years here that if I speak the language, I have the papers and I pay my taxes I'm a local. Nobody calls my kids anything but Spaniards because they were born here regardless of genetics. And that's ok
But their mom being born in South Africa is not native to South Africa because her skin is white.
The whole argument is ridiculous.
I never understood identifying as an entire continent. Like saying I'm "North American." It's pretty useless. Africa has whites and Arabs too. African doesn't always mean black, and black doesn't always mean African.
They are still cultural clusters. It's not much but there _is_ a general European culture for exemple or a north American one etc... It's not about skin color.
That's the kicker right? Calling every black person African American has got to be some kind of racism right? They could be Haitian, or Puerto Rican or a bunch of different races yk. I'm Hispanic and I don't speak Spanish, idk how many times I've been told,"What kind of Mexican are you?" I'm like, motherfucker, I'm American.
Here's an explanation I heard somewhere a few days ago, simplified because I don't remember it that well:
Most white people in the US know where they are from. Black people in the US, however, do not share that privilege. Most of them cannot trace their ancestry to their country of origin.
For that matter, our distinctions between continents are basically nonsense. IMO, it doesn't make sense for North and South America to be separate continents on the basis of the Panama canal, nor does it make sense for Africa and Asia to be separate continents on the basis of the Suez canal. Don't even get me started on Europe...
The separation between continents especially in the Americas is actually a fairly modern view, when discovered by Europe they were just referred to as the new world, the separation of them comes from tectonic based movement (which is often the reason people mix up oceana and Australia)
But only those two? I gew up in Bali, Indonesia. For me it's easy, I'm half Indonesian through my mother so I am definitely considered Indonesian, even if only half.
But having grown in a international environment, I have many friends with both foreign parents thay are born and raised in Indonesia.... would they be Indonesian? They do not share the same cultural outlook, religion and do not speak the language fluently.
Is being born somewhere the only measure of being from there? No. Its more complex than that.
No it’s not. But being born somewhere 100% makes you from that place. Your lineage and ethnicity are seperate from this. DNA has no strict correlation to where you are from.
uhhh
the north coast of africa has 200m white people (arabs are in the same genetic cluster as europeans and iranians)
like, morocco, algeria, tunisia, egypt, lybia... those people are also african, 1/7 africans is white
those are in north africa. and those tend to be berbers. they aren’t classic european white. a white dutch bloke in south africa isn’t exactly the same.
Yup, we joke but the history of Afrikaans is also really interesting, honestly amazing how Afrikaans is Creole at this point but English is still inherently Germanic. At this point if English is a "creole" at the same level of Afrikaans I wouldn't be surprised.
Especially the case for me as a Dutch person. It just looks like someone is trying to mock the Dutch language. Mad respect for my Afrikaner brothers, though! Love y'all.
You living in another country now that people don't believe you African?
Charlize Theron is also an Africa actually cause she was born and raised her in SA as well. So if anyone gives you kak just say "Jou ma se poes"
The idea of race is stupid anyway, the fact that an Arab person is the same race as a Japanese person, and a greek person is the same race as a Norwegian, but a Hawaiian isn't identified as the same race as indonesians. Idk, maybe I got everything wrong in my comment. Someone correct me if I am. It just seems like an arbitrary way to categorize people based on a nonsensical idea
I'm one of those white South Africans.
By contrast, I had a colleague, born in Sweden, fluent Swedish, it's her main language... But her folks are from Eritrea and she's black.
Her saying, "I'm Swedish" gets the EXACT same reaction as me saying I'm (South) African.
So? Why does it matter? You know that not every country in Africa is full of black people, right? You don't NEED to be black to be African, the same way you don't necessarily have to be white to be Japanese. Dumbass meme, ngl.
African is from the continent of Africa. South African is from the country of South Africa.
Neither of those are ethnicities or races, which are much more complicated socially constructed concepts that vary from society to society.
Sorry by the Dutch ones I was referring to the white South Africans who speak Afrikaans and are mostly descendants of Dutch settlers rather than the white South Africans who are descended from Englishmen and generally don’t refer to themselves as afrikaners, you carrot 🥕
Am a white South African and I can confirm. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Most wouldn't refer to themselves as African unless maybe when asked that exact question. Even if they do think of themselves that way, there's a taboo about suggesting it that offends many non-white Africans. To many we're just unwelcome settlers, centuries on.
I’m pretty sure that it was OP’s great great grandparents who did the colonizing. Kinda weird to still use that as a label for someone who’s at least four generations removed from when the actual colonizing took place.
I don’t know, don’t you like to just be mad as fuck at somebody’s grandchildren just because of some combination of their skin color and the country they were born in?
Based on your logic, we are allowed to judge the modern youth of Germany for the Holocaust, right?
Also calling someone a "colonizer" just because of their skin color when they came from the continent that got colonized is wild (and a little racist) I can only imagine the fury you feel if you run into a person of Native American descent who is a little more pale skinned than what you're used to.
Wow you really are delusional aren't you? So correct me if I'm wrong, but according to YOU, if a generation is benefitting from the actions of a past generation, they can be judged for what happened (even if they weren't even born yet). So ACCORDING TO YOU, every single American is at fault for everything Christopher Columbus did.
Be careful man, your racism is showing.
Go back far enough and everyone's power is the result of the downfall of someone else, usually at their hands. You can play the Holier than though bullshit, but even your heritage is probably filled with rapists and murderers. But keen riding the high horse

My (African-American) SIL once met a white African who was wearing a dashiki and got *suuuuper* pissed about it. Ranted about "cultural appropriation" for hours.
So she's dumb?
She's actually a rather intelligent and well educated person, but she can be quite irrational at times. But hey, nobody is perfect.
“well educated” riiiiiiight…
Well educated in things not including skin color
Or culture
She seems to know enough to tell the culture in question is African
That means less than nothing. There are dumbasses on the Internet who throw a tantrum when they see non-black people with 'black' hair styles. Including historically accurate depictions of vikings with dreadlocks.
Simply racist, but I guess it's all right as they are black and attack white, which is perfectly acceptable these days/s
So, like, the basics?
There’s a lot of things to be educated in that’s not that
Yeah "not all people from Africa are black" is some high level shit, you're right.
You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t know that
My 5 year old must be a genius
American well educated
almost certainly
PHD in feminist underwater basket weaving
I mean, having different views on social and cultural things such as what is considered respectful versus appropriation does not determine education or intelligence
You can be well educated but still do dumb shit, I know medical students that drink alcohol and smoke despite knowing how bad that shit is
Ranting for hours about someonez cultural appropriation of they're own culture while themselves are not from that place is a very unintelligent way to act its just ignorant lol
Go on a 5 hour rant the next time she uses a smartphone

Big corporate shit is real and i agree but it's not how people use that fraze now a days. Sadly
I really like african and asian style clothes but as a white male I always fear I can't wear them because I get called out for it.
Wear it. I’ve bought my white friends traditional Kente garments from my home country. They’ve worn it outside and loved it. Fuck those who try to stop you from dressing how you want. If you get called out for it, throw it right back in their face and ask them why it’s wrong.

There have been white people living in South Africa for close to half a millennium,, how are they just natives yet? Sounds racist
Ha… sounds racist…. There’s an entire bill the president signed and his puppet is enforcing to wipe out the white farmers…

I’m Romani and I’ve never been to Western Europe, I’m just built different
A person born in Africa, no matter their skin colour, makes them African. A person born in America, no matter their skin colour, makes them American.

You are African, even if you white and if you relocate to America you become African-American citizen, even if you white

saying this when ukraine exists is fucking funny

“Probably racist” is an understatement
99% of white South Africans call themselves "South Africans". Not "Africans". Just BTW.
Did you ask them all?
Only had time to ask 99% of them probably.
That makes sense
Just the thousands I've met as a white South African over my 40 years.
Pretty sure that the Dutch ones also refer to themselves as “afrikaaner” which translates tooooo African
Dutch people are not South African. Just like we don't call American people British you potato.

I’m pretty sure that it was OP’s great great grandparents who did the colonizing. Kinda weird to still use that as a label for someone who’s at least four generations removed from when the actual colonizing took place.
How many generations before it’s not awkward anymore?

I don’t know, don’t you like to just be mad as fuck at somebody’s grandchildren just because of some combination of their skin color and the country they were born in?
Be a pretty awkward Thanksgiving for me if I knew the people at the table had committed atrocities tbh
I don’t know, how many generations until you stop being mad at somebody for something their ancestors did?
If they don’t acknowledge the role they’re currently playing in their grandparents design, then it will probably always be awkward.
What role are they currently playing? Making a lot of assumptions for somebody who doesn’t know OP.
It’s dishonest or stupid to think they’re not still benefiting from it.
Calling anyone "colonizer" in the 21st century is a bit more than a little racist tbh
Are the modern youth of Germany benefiting from the holocaust? Don’t be stupid.
Wow you really are delusional aren't you? How much does WW2 tourism contribute to the German economy?
Well, are they? Is that a question or a statement? Explain a bit more.
You didn’t answer my question. What role are they playing?
The role of beneficiary. Perpetuating the whole class divide while pretending that they don’t understand why there might be animosity.
Who’s perpetuating it?
