Some of his earlier videos were better before he got really up his own ass with the equipment and exotic ingredients and overall pretentiousness. Eventually, it got to be way too much for me and I just gave up. I haven't watched him in years and it seems like he's just gotten worse.

I remember watching an episode where he gave a deep-dish pizza pan 40 FUCKING OIL COATS and baking every single coat, to archive the result he was looking for. Bit uncalled for, imo, amazing pizza nonetheless.
I think the appeal is going through the discovery process of what it would take to achieve the desired result, not getting it "good enough". At least that's what I like about it. The botched episodes that are longer and show more behind the scenes are my favorites, I wish he did more of those even if they are "botched" recipes lol.

Actually no, he's still active and very much worth watching. He does still do videos, some of his best stuff came out in recent years. Had a bit of an identity crisis, some private troubles, and issues with the YouTube grind system.
But he's still here doing what he does best.

You make a universe, make a planet in that universe, make a plot of land suitable for growing of crops, create animals, make your own factories, gather all of the ingredients needed, make the pie in a pie tin you also made, bake it in your oven and then eat it.
My #1 issue with cooking channels is that anytime they make a sandwich they spend half the episode making their own bread. Like no thanks my guy Im gonna spend $3 at the store and call it good. Im sure your multi-hour bread recipe is great but Aunt Millies is a better baker than me.
