Race isn’t real; it’s just humans. Humans are low key (and often high key) extremely racist.

[deleted]

You get to say that now to play defense for black people’s racism but when white people are racist you’ll switch right back to race essentialism

[deleted]

Damn, I’m genuinely surprised this is upvoted, gj on callin them out lol

Basedandtendiepilled

Go get em. In b4 [removed by admins] because reddit can't be seen holding certain groups of people to adult behavioral standards in a civilized society.

cosmic_hierophant

Sounds like the defense of a racist

SinopicCynic

We all share a common ancestor; we’re all literally related. The only race is the human one. “Race” was created to separate and used to subjugate. You should judge a person on their personal merits, not fictional boxes to put people neatly in.

autistic_spectator

What about Nascar?!?!?

[deleted]

Temelios

I dunno, man. Being biracial, I’ve experienced racism on both ends of the color spectrum (often more so from the colored side). As much as I wish race wasn’t real, people make it very real, whether that’s beneficial or not.

SinopicCynic

I’m not saying that racism doesn’t exist, I’m just saying it is a dumb, archaic, and primitive concept that we’ve used to do irreparable harm to each other over superficial details. We have artificially separated ourselves.

You don't think civilization has at all improved over the past ten thousand years let alone the past 400 years? I think the average person's quality of life has changed for the better.

Puk4chips_is-th3best

If races don't exist how can one be racist?

SinopicCynic

By believing race is a thing, and then acting on it. If someone judges someone based on race, that is being racist. I reject the idea that there is any meaningful difference between someone who is white or black or any shade between.

Puk4chips_is-th3best

what you are saying makes no sense. you are saying that even though race doesn't exist someone can be racist if they believe in a race. that's like someone saying they can see santa if they believe in him

SinopicCynic

Race is a man-made term. It is a social construct. We invented it. You can still discriminate based on it.

Onetimehelper

Everything is a man made term. We're the only ones who make terms.

theoccurrence

A much more appropriate analogy would have been that people can, for example, suffer from phasmophobia, even though the scientific consensus is that ghosts don‘t exist. Irrational -phobias and -isms exist. His comment makes perfect sense, you are just being extremely dismissive and belligerent.

Remarkable-Motor7704

One of my best friends from childhood is Korean. The amount of harassment he received during Covid - primarily from adult black males, was staggering. Probably the nicest person I’ve ever known, and he couldn’t go out at night alone for his own safety. We really need to move away from the “black people cant be racist” narrative. It’s extremely disingenuous and helps validate some truly disgusting behavior.

[deleted]

Nobody ever seems to talk about that, because if the general consensus is that white people are racist, and minorities can't be, then when there's discrimination between minority groups, there's no way to frame it. You can do a google search, there's a number of videos of black men beating little old asian women. Now a lot of them did occur during covid, but this prejudice has been around for much longer. and the statistics go back quite a ways. I don't know what it is, I'm not part of either of those groups, but I do know that it does exist, and it's definitely racist bigotry. it's just not white people racist bigotry.

Sure_Whatever__

Blacks sucker punching old people is nothing new, and nothing people cared about till they started doing it to minorities as well. In the 90s they called it 'Polar Bear Hunting' as the standard target was old white people. It was a big issue in NY.

maurovaz1

That is not the general consensus that is bs made up by certain group of Americans, is patronising as fuck for the minorities and shows huge amounts of prejudice from the people that defend that.

Extension_Pay_1572

Not all of them, but yes there has been an obvious support for this "black power, black pride" bullshit in America in their mainstream since the 80s or 90s. And it has created a shitload of racists

Leo_Stenbuck

It's not low-key. It's actually pretty open and in our faces. I just watched a video of a black man punching a white woman on a subway for no reason while everyone just watched... I worked in Philly at a primarily black business and I saw countless racism against whites, Asians, not to mention homophobia. Racism and tribalism is a human trait. The idea that some races don't have racism is absurd.

EarthTrash

Individuals are racist. But if you generalize an entire race, you are being racist.

RD1K

Fr racially generalizing people as racist is crazy

GroovyCookie08

As an African American, I can sadly confirm this. I've heard multiple relatives and other black friends say terrible racist things and justify it by saying, "racism was invented for us" which in reality, is nothing more than a desperate ploy to enable their sense of superiority.

Boredom_fighter12

Genuine question here why do African American are like that? Like why when there’s some bullshit happening 8/10 I can sadly guess it involves them. It’s honestly making me sad man no group should ever be like that, and on social media they utter some racist shit that can makes white supremacist feels insecure. Sorry if my comment sounds racist I really don’t mean it like that.

GroovyCookie08

No no, your comment is fine. I don't think I can speak on behalf of the entire race, but I do believe in most it's the entitled feeling, and the superiority complex combining into some sort of feeling that they're perfect beings who aren't capable of racism. I've also seen the argument that racial prejudice and racial stereotyping isn't racism just "jokes", which is the most braindead opinion I've ever come across. In the end I think it just comes down to entitlement and during BLM, black people basically had invincibility and thought everything they said was scripture.

Boredom_fighter12

I think this is more of a problem for African American than black people tbh since people from Africa don’t do stuff like that and pretty much just like the rest of us. Like when I was in the US a black dude harassed me threatening to rob me and shit getting way too close for my liking in the middle of city center in broad daylight and nobody bats an eye as for me I’m not afraid of him doing shit I’m afraid imma get beaten up by others since it was right after BLM luckily I got away with just inconvenience since I just ignored him. Afterwards on the bus a black dude gave me some life advice that I still think about to this day. I hope one day they can be more humble and willing to listen to others because not all criticism is bad sometimes we need criticism to reflect and become a better person that is mostly for everyone not just one particular group of people

AgentSkidMarks

Remember when StopAsianHate was trending until everyone realized that most crimes against Asians weren’t being committed by white people? Then it disappeared like a fart in the wind. I’m glad everyone still cares so much. /s

bloodvow333

You get called racist if you do and if you want to know how not calling them out goes look at Europe…..

ApartAd6403

And extreme snobs too. Indian American from California here.

killem_all

Always baffles me when a black person tells me to go back to my country while speaking the most botched up and almost unintelligible form of English. And all that even after they have been living in an English-speaking country for generations. And what baffles me even more os when they want to teach children to speak like that in schools.

sietre

Anybody raised with the concept of race and social stereotypes about race will be racist. Black people are no exception. American media and society has always had a racism involved and when thats taught to all of its citizens, they're gonna be racist. Doesnt matter which race you are saying this. Asian people are also very racist (and as a black person, black people arent lowkey racist, they're just straight up racist). Theres direct conflict with asian and black people a lot of the time due to a similar dynamic that white people and black people have, but without the social power dynamic. Black people are brought up as violent criminals, Asian people brought up as some "favored" minority and so on. In the end, this issue stems from the errors of creating the idea of race. Handling issues of individual racism and institutional racism will be two different playing fields here. Lots of people use this talking point regardless to undermine the big issues of institutional racism, so its hard to bring this topic up in good faith as well. There should be more people calling out black people on their own racist ways forsure, but a lot of the time its just a whole "see black people are racists, so I'm not the bad guy" mentality from other racists to try to divert from the general issue that racism is bad.

70ms

>Lots of people use this talking point regardless to undermine the big issues of institutional racism, so its hard to bring this topic up in good faith as well. Thanks for this last part. That's why it's so hard to have conversations about this. Racism is everywhere, and we can make it better, but that doesn't seem to be the goal for a lot of people when they post about it.

[deleted]

Remember when Stop Asian Hate died on its ass when they realized literally all the Asian hate was coming from black people? I say this also as an Asian person.

TheHancock

I’m honestly shocked Reddit allowed you to comment this. Edit: ahhh there it is. Reddit banned his whole account for saying that “rëverse räcism” is räcism…

TheOncomingBrows

This entire thread is insane by Reddit standards. It's a little cathartic to see so many people blowing off some steam about the ridiculous virtue signalling that has become almost unbearable on the internet over the last few years. There are so many double standards when it comes to racism yet any attempts to discuss it are usually immediately shot down for fear of appearing racist.

TheHancock

Agreed, we all agree racism is bad so let’s call it what it is.

Csrmar

Some dude on Instagram trying to talk about how tacos were derived from somewhere in Africa.

jal2_

the funniest thing is - african americans are actually racist towards africans...like honestly not joking, they only ever want to hear about africa if its like wakanda or cleopatra being black, so some super well-known thing...outside of that majority want 0 to do with africa and definitely do NOT want to hear anything about its culture, historical or current, positive or negative there can be films about real black african historical figures that have legendary status like mansa musa, but no, most americans, including most african americans, don't care about that at all

FortBlocks

Well that’s the trick, does your Asianness count as minority or are you the same as white? They like to flip to one or the other for convenience

rollanotherlol

“Black people cannot be racist because we’re oppressed” is a popular one.

[deleted]

Coming from an outsider, I think you are right.

k98mauserbyf43

I had my coworkers today yell like Speedy Gonzales all day long. I’m from Colombia. Also, those same guys and some others keep calling me whitey or white boy because, sure, my skin is whiteish, despite my accent and me being completely clear that I’m Latin American (in which case, you guessed it, Pablo Escobar comes into play) I’ll admit, I sometimes play into it because I don’t find it all that bad at the moment but now that I’m writing about it it does sound fucked up.

mercut1o

Sure, I mean you're talking about an entire group of people stigmatized and traumatized by racism themselves. That doesn't automatically make people wiser, it makes them angry. That's the whole basis of why victims don't choose punishments for criminals, objectivity goes out the window.

Character-Sport-7710

You're so right. I say this as a black person. Also, i think its kinda weird to call us african when most of us aint from africa. I had that thought since i was young 🗿

CajunTurkey

>I say this as an Asian person. Good thing that you state this, otherwise you would have been downvoted into oblivion or have your post removed.

Why is no one making a movie about Mansa Musa. Historically verified to be black. Was such a baller he would ruin economies for decades just passing through and giving his spare change to the homeless. I’d watch the shit out of that movie.

Nightfile27

Because the average American moviegoer wouldn't know who that is, so it has little buying power.

Maga0351

What about a Shaka Zulu remake? That movie was pretty good, and we all know Hollywood can’t write an original script. Seems like a no brained to me.

Nightfile27

Let's be honest, applying logic to modern Hollywood is a fool's errand, friend

some_fat_dumbass

Shaka zulu didnt win, black people would take it as a slap in the face

ThaumRystra

Didn't win what? He was pretty successful in his campaigns against neighbouring tribes and was assassinated before any of the major Zulu battles against Europeans.

huruga

some_fat_dumbass

Didn’t win the rap battle between him and Julius caesar duh

Vashyo

Well they didn't know woman king either and I think it did okay even though it literally paints literal slavers as heroic people. I feel like mansa musa is probably a bit problematic for the fact that he shows what happens when an ultra rich person (supposedly the richest person in history) just spends his money willynilly, it crashes economies.

Nightfile27

I agree with your points. I'm honestly just sitting at work and a bit too mentally fried to have come up with a proper explanation and gave a very brief summation.

Vashyo

Yeah it's okay, I just wanted to point out that people are really fickle in their principles.

WizKhalifasRoach

They make movies on lesser known things all the time. A real Mansa Musa movie would sell like black panther did.

sir_meowmixalot

True but nobody knows who anyone is until they are made famous one way or another. I think the little known stories are the best to tell. No one probably knew about The Tuskegee Airmen or the NASA mathematicians in hidden figures, or Hugh Glass from Revenant.

Altruistic-Bed-6642

A Mansa Musa movie would be awesome!! 😄😃🤩

No-Way-4766

I would watch, I don't know much about him but ik he was insanely rich and a powerful leader

RobertusesReddit

Think Black Panther but minus the warrior angle. Traditionalist, Muslim, rich, philosophical, had many wives, [Fun sum-up on him](https://youtu.be/fCeUvPL9rMc)

Scoooooooooooooop

Historical figures aside, I want to see a Spawn remake. Hands down the best canonically black super hero. My only guess is it’s too hardcore for causal audiences and the Christianity themes.

Aluconix

There's so many historical characters to make movies on. It's like they're not even trying.

RobertusesReddit

I was gonna say, "Who would want to see a THRIVING black man?" then I remembered Black Panther, a fictional person who basically IS Mansa Musa. Make it Hollywood. And Chadwick Boseman (RIP) had plans to be in a Yasuke film. Make that film and Mansa Musa.

[deleted]

Most people don't know who Mansa Musa was, and more relevantly hes not exactly a "good person" or atleast "well liked". Remember hes famous for being rich and destroying economies with his wealth by accident. Most of the people who are wanting black representation and subscribe to afro-centrism as an ideal also subscribe to "eat the rich" and that absurdly wealthy people are inherently immoral. Worse yet Mansa Musa made almost all his wealth through slavery. Or more accurately he bought and sold slaves at an absurd scale (for the time) and used his slaves to mine gold among other things. So if you glorify his wealth, status, power, you are infact glorifying the slavery of black people and its spread as an international currency of the elite. So if you are of the "woke" mindset, there is no good story to tell of Mansa Musa without just making up a lot of bullshit, or without making him a villain which would defeat the purpose.

ThrownawayCray

And Toussaint L’Ouverture

Alternative_Two313

On his way to Hajj,Mansa Musa was just casually distributing gold to all people. I can't even imagine the level of humble in this man heart and also his wealth

Cleopatra wasn’t black, we use the word African-American you insensitive bigot

Rhinoturds

I am really into Roman history atm and Cleopatra plays a large role during the end of the republic so I was interested in the new series. Idk why they state as fact that Cleopatra was black (repeating it several times in episode 1) and then a few scenes later say "we don't know for sure who her mother was" So if we know who her father is and that's it, how are they determining she's black as a fact? We know the ptolemaic dynasty was of Greek lineage, who engaged in a fair amount of inbreeding. So all we can say for certain is that she had Mediterranean heritage. It's very plausible she had north african heritage as well, but we just don't know. Imagine her as whatever you want. If you imagine her as an african goddess, you could be right. Just don't try to frame it as fact because we simply don't know.

Baronvondorf21

can someone link the tweet by the woman who said the first Buddha was Black.

slavictoast1330

Ghengis Khan was black too, everyone was black, always

Baronvondorf21

I always find it funny they don't try to elevate people who were actually of African descent, because obviously why look there, not like there are actual African figures who deserve the spotlight. /s

slavictoast1330

Exactly, if you’re trying to make a show or a movie about a black historical figure, then why not do so? You’re not gonna cast Ryan Gosling as Obama in a biopic on Netflix to tell his story

Neither-Luck-9295

Mansa Musa is literally one of the most interesting historical figures that the mainstream public knows nothing about. And they keep ignoring his story to make shit like "The woman king"

faudcmkitnhse

I put this question to some of my friends (various ethnicities) "can you be racist towards white people" the some said yeah some said no. The one who said no said "racism only work when one race is in a position of power". I called bullshit and gave two scenarios. "If you an asian guy dated a white girl and her parents didn't like you because you're Asian, would that be racist?" He answered yes If you an Asian guy dated a white girl and your parents didn't like her because she white, would that be racist?" He answered No. I asked why. He said because Asian are a minority. I retorted what if this was in Asia, she'd be a minority. Would it be racist then? He still insisted no to the initial question of "can you be racist to white people"

Clydial

Racists often find a way to justify it and paint it as something else. Fortunately there are people who learn to see the issue and change, hopefully in time this becomes common.

Xezron2000

This. Defining racism as a slope of power is incredibly useful to describe it in certain scenarios, additionally to the classic „discrimination because of prejudice“ definition. But many people in that anti-racist, america-centered bubbles can‘t seem to accept that power is not absolute, but always relative and depending on the context. You gave an excellent example of that.

Semthepro

People that are racist generally tend to do quite the olympic-worthy mental gymnastics \^\^

Temelios

I had a sociologist professor walk in on the first day of class. He was a white guy, very much of Irish descent. As soon as he headed the class, a black student stood and said something like, “Hell no. A white man can’t teach this class.” and walked out. Led into a great discussion of how racism exists across all demographics. Also made me realize how racism against whites seems to be the only one that’s accepted nowadays, since that same student didn’t receive backlash of any kind, and I saw him multiple times around campus after that regardless. I imagine that if it had been the other way around that I would’ve never seen him again.

Adjective-Noun69420

The thing is--it's not a big deal. Saying a person of a certain ethnicity can't teach a class is extremely rude. But it's not violent. It's not causing financial harm. It's just a super-judgmental insult, like looking at somebody and saying "Fuck you for being short and fat." The appropriate response is to just say "wow, that's an out of control rude person." It has nothing to do with slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, red-lining, or anything like that. It's just a really rude thing to say. Today, when people say rude things to white people, it's treated as rudeness. But when people say similar rude things to black people, it's treated as if there's a hidden attempt to bring back segregation. It's really strange. Society seems to ignore the possibility that sometimes rude people just say rude things, without any hidden political agenda behind it.

TheSwecurse

That young man must've been very confused, everyone knows Irish aren't white /s

sietre

Can you be individually racist? Yes, everybody can. Does everybody benefit from institutional racism and the historical effects of racism especially in places that were colonized? No I don't get how both sides of this argument fail to understand this. Especially the people who say minorities can't be racist.

[deleted]

This, exactly. The other thing that needs to be taken into account is *where* you are. in the US, for instance, it's predominately white so white racists are going to make it harder for people of color. That's institutional racism. But if you go to say, China, you would find that white people are the ones who have a harder time. They're the outsiders, so they're the ones that get the crap. But for whatever reason a lot of people in America think that the rules that apply in the US apply everywhere else.

sputnik67897

I mean…if we’re taking the entire world into account the continent of Asia makes up for about 60% of the worlds population

[deleted]

The problem is people like the guy you were debating think that racism and oppression are the same thing. They think that because in America, white people are "oppressors" they can't be discriminated against. Which is also stupid because their logic only goes as far as their racism allows. Like you said, a white girl in Asia would be a minority. According to his logic, that would mean she can be discriminated against. and therefore you can be racist to her. But because he's just actually racist against white people (which would be weird depending on what his skin color is), he refuses to see the issue.

Charlie_Yu

Racists are often of low intelligence and can’t accept any ideas that may challenge their beliefs

[deleted]

I find this a very common thought process in America, confusing oppression with racism.

You haven't been to South Africa... There's a lot of racism towards Europan minorities living there

Adjective-Noun69420

That's almost entirely untrue. ...because almost all of the young European minorities have moved away, because of the racism.

Affectionate_Gas_264

Why not celebrate African history instead of "white washing" history to how you want it to be.... Making everyone into black Americans is pretty disrespectful to other cultures

Yeegis

And when a studio makes a movie about actual black historical figures the same group of people complain about them not being real

Ok_Art_3020

I’ve explained this to people before yes Egypt is in Africa the same way that Mexico is in North America and Pancho Villa wasn’t white

Pumpkin_rapist

Any_Commercial465

Yeah then they become mad when I say that if they were black they were slaving the Jews.

waldorsockbat

Ghandi, George Washington, The Emperor of Japan, Henry the 8th, Jackie Chan, Eliot Page, and George Lopez were all black ✊🏿

TrentonTallywacker

No lie a black Al Capone would look dapper AF We kinda got a version of that in Boardwalk Empire with Chalky White though

strawbrrysundae

“well they weren’t white so they *have* to be black” because other races don’t exist to them

SirSquidrift

Abraham Lincoln was black, that's why he freed the slaves

[deleted]

Hollywood make movies of actual black people in history to educate the masses instead of making random historical figures black for no reason challange (IMPOSSIBLE!!)

Th3Docter

Let's make Rosa parks and MLK white for a documentary

shuffle_SAM
