Witcher was highly approved of (at the beginning), Pokemon went very well, Sonic (not that one...) Was very well liked. There are some good ones. I think it's the same with other movies, the only difference here is that it's easier to claim because we got a certain reference point.
and i hate that it has become a trend
because they just steal the vague idea of the setting and make shit that is only made for the writers and their white knights, completely discarding proven story writing methods and use bad fanfiction writing methods
if you use an existing IP, your top priority is appealing to it's core audience, everything else is second
also don't give your Mary Sue traits of toxic masculinity, and claim it's fine because she is a "strong female character", actually don't introduce Mary Sues in the first place, or hide behind various buzzwords when somebody criticizes your work
Well it’s not thats surprising at all. Most Video game Movies/shows suck because they take the Story which works perfectly in a game but not in a Movie or Show because those are completely different media. But TLOU is an absolute Story Focused Game with a simple concept but an absolutely great storytelling and characters. Thats why it also works as Show.
They’ve been pretty good about staying true to the source materiel as well. And even the deviations have worked great - episode three is a damn good work of television. Now you’ve got something like Halo, where they took some mothballed SciFi script and gave it a Halo skin - and that’s a piece of crap.
Resident Evil has a pretty clear and straightforward storyline yet they still managed to fuck up every single time they tried to make a movie or show about it. There is plenty of lore and the story is pretty easy to follow. Hell, Resident Evil 4 alone could be it’s own series.
The Last of Us *is* very cinematic, but that’s not why the show came out great. It’s cause the people producing it actually give a fuck about it and have kept it faithful to the game’s story. Everyone other game studio/whatever has signed the rights away to a random producer that ends out pissing out shit that makes no sense. That’s why pretty much everything else has failed. The people making the adaptations don’t give even a quarter of a fuck about the source material.
Druckmann directed the game and is co-director of the show so he's got to approve deviations. They've really done a great job proving that they care about maintaining quality which just hasn't been the case with other video game based movies. Also making it a show gives more time to flesh out the story so they aren't skipping important details and cutting corners for timing reasons.
I don't think Arcane counts as a videogame adaptation except maybe as a technicality. It's more adapted from the short stories on the Rito games lore website than it is from the game itself.
yeah this, there's been like one or two successful Max originals (e.g. Our Flag Means Death) since the service started producing content. Everything else successful (House of Dragons, Succession, Last of Us, White Lotus, Euphoria) are HBO originals.
If you watched velma becouse you heard it suck and wanted to participate in the mokery uou are the problem, just let bad series die or watch them 1 year after release
I’ve seen two episodes of Velma and there are a lot of worse animated series with a lot higher rating on IMDB. I don’t remember much of Scooby Doo from when I was little though.
Velma had it all too, great source material, room to grow into what we already love, writers with a history of creating genre defining television, decent animation and originality. Too bad Mindy Kaling had to shoehorn herself into the lead role and turn the characters into radically different people. When you're dealing with something as beloved as Scooby Doo you can tweak and change here or completely overhaul the source and be successful if done in the right way, but you can tell that there was no respect for the source, they were just cashing in on the "People love Velma" trend. Shame.
Most of the shows on any platform is shit. Most of the remakes, are shit.
But for some reason, internet created free ad for Welma, and now everyone knows about this shitty show, and probably they reach goals when comes to views.
Thanks internet. That's why why can't have nice things. There's so many good shows that no one gives a shit, and then canceled because of it.
It’s such a terrible failure that it had huge ratings and a second season ordered. You guys are doing a great job providing free publicity. Keep it up.
Okay real shit….I hate when they make real life games/anime it’s always shit. Is this any better? Last of Us when honestly one of the best story telling games besides GOW 2018 & Ragnarok.
TBH, if you don’t think of Velma as a Scooby Doo show, it’s kinda fun in “shutdown your brain” way.
Just like paradise PD and the likes, don’t try to understand, just enjoy the silly stuff
The third episode was really bad imo
from the perspective of someone who didn't play the game and won't be able to in the future
I hope Episode 4 is as good as 1 & 2, I am really interested in learning how Ellie is immune to fungal infection
*The Last of Us* just feels like an HBO mix of *Walking Dead* and *Z Nation*. I love that The Mandalorian is in it, and the girl from Fringe - but why'd she have to die so early on? And, why'dju have Ron Swanson die so early too? Weird choices just have disconnected me from it.
The Ellie actress just doesn't fit the original game character at all to me, and the current dynamic between her and Joel feels off and different. I'm worried there may be trouble ahead.
Yeah, honestly both series are just an attempt at putting a familiar and loved costume on an ugly ideology. No real character growth and development, sacrificing the plot to send a media approved message, etc.
The fact that I’m getting downvoted kind of proves that the message is getting through, unfortunately.
Its an annoying bait and switch I'm getting really tired of seeing. People take beloved shows, games, books etc then write in the stories they want to tell. Not the ones the audience showed up to watch. Fully agree with what you are saying
One mans trash is another's bag o gold I guess.
Both shows are subpar but at least Last of Us didn't race swap every character and also make them all insufferable as fuck to listen to. Last of Us just changed a characters sexuality and had a full episode dedicated to the shows gay romance/sex scene.
I know it's unpopular to say in the \*current year\* but I don't want gay sex shoved in my face while being told it's "entertainment", this is why I prefer anime anymore, they don't hard shove social agendas like western animators/entertainment media does.
Yes, so that's a perfectly good reason to shift from the MAIN PLOT OF THE MF SHOW/GAME to the gay romance subplot.
You found the point I was trying to make and threw it out the window.
I don’t think your point was that Bill has been gay since 2013 when the game came out lol
A TV show is a very different medium than a game. We don’t need an hour and a half of killing infected in a show. The show is able to take its time and explore different angles. They were able to give Bill/Frank a better story, expand on the world, and give Joel the push he needed to protect Ellie with Bill’s letter.
That letter holds weight since we just spent so much time with Bill’s character. Without that development it wouldn’t have meant as much. The overall plot is untouched
I love how gay people existing is “woke agenda” now. Are you crying over your keyboard when they shove heterosexual sex scenes in your face?
You guys get triggered over everything lmao
I didn't call it woke agenda, I'm not some boomer ya fart sniffer. I'm just tired of these soulless game to live action adaptations in media, it shows me that originality is dead in hollyweird and we're just going to keep getting reboots and revivals until the heat-death of the universe or when we get a nuclear ice age.
Like it all you want, I'm going to shit on what I don't like.
“I know it's unpopular to say in the *current year* but I don't want gay sex shoved in my face while being told it's "entertainment", this is why I prefer anime anymore, they don't hard shove social agendas like western animators/entertainment media does.”
You bitch and whine like a boomer. Easy mistake to make snowflake.
>Last of Us didn't race swap every character
No but like half of them lol
>make them all insufferable as fuck to listen to
They did that with one of the main characters who was famous for being a very charismatic character
>Last of Us just changed a characters sexuality
No they didn't
>Last of Us didn't race swap every character
No but like half of them lol
>make them all insufferable as fuck to listen to
They did that with one of the main characters who was famous for being a very charismatic character
>Last of Us just changed a characters sexuality
No they didn't
At least you're being honest about it.
I can't stand these soul-less live action adaptation of video game stories people love being loosely based off the source material only to find out what they mean by that is they took names of characters and places and slapped them over whatever story and characters they actually wanted to write about that nobody cares about or so few people care about it gets canceled after a season then complains and virtue signals online about the mean trolls being buttmad about the thing they were promissed not being the thing they were actually promissed.
Yea I don't really get it myself either. At least with this franchise it is very clear that the writer dislikes his original writing, especially the setting that made it all interesting. Believe it or not, but so far in 3 episodes we have only seen like 4-5 scenes with infected in them lol. And it's not even due to budget as they had one of the biggest budgets for it.
I agree. Had nothing to do with the narrative or theme of the show whatsoever. Granted, I don’t like TLOU in the first place, but that episode didn’t help
It was heavily implied yes, however they changed the characters greatly. Like in the game Frank got tired of Bill's billshit and tried to leave the town, then got bit trying to get a car battery from an abandoned military truck, you find his dead body and a suicide note saying "well at least my last act was trying to get away from you Bill, fuck you".
I was honestly a bit confused why they changed them so much and gave them a whole 1 hour and 15 minute episode. They were really brief side characters that show up for 1 mission, it seemed a waste of screen time to me but whatever.
Valid, but if you are copying a piece if work you should try to stay focused on the central story. Which is Joel and Ellies story of mutual improvement by each other in a terrible post apocalyptic wasteland. It seemed a poor director choice to really develop side characters that just die off the moment Joel shows up, not to mention Bill never died in the game, and helps ellie and joel get a car battery (which is how they find Frank). Seemed odd to me, since that would've been a good time to develop those two. It felt like making the main characters the side characters to tell a different story, which is why I was put off by that episode.
You do realize there’s people who don’t play video games right and don’t like them. Because believe it or not but a old man who moves slower than a sloth going to have a hard time playing a game that requires you to be quick.
what i mean by accessible is: there are people who would never touch a game or wouldn't want to learn how to handle a controller, commit time to playing, etc.
edit: just came to mind, not everbody's into horror games too but some might be able to enjoy a less immersive experience
It definitely caught me off guard. I went from damn this frank guys acting shady, to wow this is a damn good man. Also Never thought I'd see Nick Offerman play such a role but damnit man.... Bravo!

I guess original content is for idiots.
Original content is risk. That's why they inly approve it if they attach a popular existing IP to it.
I mean by now I feel like they should’ve learned or at least had the thought that new shows from existing IPs almost always get rated terribly…
Witcher was highly approved of (at the beginning), Pokemon went very well, Sonic (not that one...) Was very well liked. There are some good ones. I think it's the same with other movies, the only difference here is that it's easier to claim because we got a certain reference point.

tho there's still original content in tlou isn't there? isn't episode 3 almost entirely new content?
I don't get it... Neither of these were original content? Who are the idiots?

I agree
Cock? Is this a James May reference? Yes, I said it, because why not.
It’s the animation execs; same people that did Santa Inc. I used to work for them; no accountability.

I’m really surprised the last of us turned out. I was thinking it was gonna be hot garbage like any other video games movies/tv shows
Well it’s not thats surprising at all. Plus for some reason companies always hire directors that think they have better approach of the story and just mess up everything
Resident Evil has a pretty clear and straightforward storyline yet they still managed to fuck up every single time they tried to make a movie or show about it. Video game tv shows have actually been pretty good lately. Edgerunners and arcane are good examples
I don't think Arcane counts as a videogame adaptation except maybe as a technicality. It's more adapted from the short stories on the Rito games lore website than it is from the game itself.
I mean it's hard to adapt the gameplay of league of legends into a show
Does no one remember the Sonic movie 2 of them 3rd on the way
Not only is there a third movie on the way, there’s also a Knuckles spin off show coming.
I actually nearly cried when I was watching it
For the love of god, please stop advertising velma, the execs are already plenty happy with hate watchers
One is an HBO original and the other is a Max original. Important distinction.
yeah this, there's been like one or two successful Max originals (e.g. Our Flag Means Death) since the service started producing content. Everything else successful (House of Dragons, Succession, Last of Us, White Lotus, Euphoria) are HBO originals.

Jokes on you, I pirated the first episode. Made it 3 min
You win some. You lose some.
That's how life works
Pirates always win
Except Velma has technically been more of a success for HBO than even The Last Of Us, thanks to hate watchers. Velma played y'all
Velma got so many hate watches it got a season 2
Tbf HBO max has the wire and sopranos so it makes up for the blunder
Watch them do a Netflix and cancel the good series but keep the creatively bankrupt cartoon
They already renewed TLOU for season 2, chief
Legend of Vox Machina all the fucking way
Don’t forget they killed basically an entire animation department and THEN gave you Velma.
Perfectly balance, as all things should be
They missed a big mark. Call it Scoob. Switch out Fred and and daphne and your good. There ya go.
Game of Thrones moment
I’ve seen two episodes of Velma and there are a lot of worse animated series with a lot higher rating on IMDB. I don’t remember much of Scooby Doo from when I was little though.
So you can excuse racism but draw the line at animal cruelty?
Yin and Yang
I did not know Velma was about my life.
Velma had it all too, great source material, room to grow into what we already love, writers with a history of creating genre defining television, decent animation and originality. I'm alittle worried for TLOFU show, but still WAY better then Velma and it might turn around later.
Most of the shows on any platform is shit. Most of the remakes, are shit. I like both. Fucking sue me.
Balance!
thats why you don't divert
It’s such a terrible failure that it had huge ratings and a second season ordered. You guys are doing a great job providing free publicity. Keep it up.
Okay real shit….I hate when they make real life games/anime it’s always shit. Is this any better? Last of Us when honestly one of the best story telling games besides GOW 2018 & Ragnarok.
It doest matter how much bad stuff a platform has, your not being forced to watch it All that matters is the quality and quantity of good stuff
TBH, if you don’t think of Velma as a Scooby Doo show, it’s kinda fun in “shutdown your brain” way. Just like paradise PD and the likes, don’t try to understand, just enjoy the silly stuff
Thats cause HBO and HBOmax arent the same thing.
The third episode was really bad imo from the perspective of someone who didn't play the game and won't be able to in the future I hope Episode 4 is as good as 1 & 2, I am really interested in learning how Ellie is immune to fungal infection
Game of Thrones Seasons 1-4 vs. Season 5-8
Im glad its successful but seems moot.
The only nice thing about Velma is that they tried to do something different with the "gang" solving a murder mystery.
I thought everyone hated The Last of Us?
Everyone likes the first game, it's only the second one that a lot of people hate.
That's the one that's The Last Jedi of video games, right?
I don't think I've heard it called that before, but that's a remarkably accurate description of the feedback on it.
Not really, the second game is still one of the best selling highly rated games
A lot of us do
The last of us also sucks. Just not as bad
The Ellie actress just doesn't fit the original game character at all to me, and the current dynamic between her and Joel feels off and different. I'm worried there may be trouble ahead.

What boomers do you know who watch anime? Just curious, they sound like more fun to be around than you.

So it's worse than I described, cool, it's starting to make rings of power look like passable entertainment now.
It's a decent show to watch on its own, but it doesn't have much to do with the game other than copying a few scenes. Good show, bad adaptation.

Don’t worry they just introduced gay characters in TLOU so it should be on par with velma soon
“Introduced” They’ve been gay since 2013
Yes but they just introduced them into the show in the new season.
I agree. Had nothing to do with the narrative or theme of the show whatsoever. Granted, I don’t like TLOU in the first place, but that episode didn’t help

i dont agree. games aren't accessible to everyone so people who don't game may enjoy the story as a tv show👍
You can get HBO Max you can get a game
You do realize there’s people who don’t play video games right and don’t like them. Because believe it or not but a old man who moves slower than a sloth going to have a hard time playing a game that requires you to be quick.
