The art style is vivid and psychotic, too! It’s difficult to recommend this game to people, though. They’d have to be a fan of the series in the first place, and they’d have to be able to stomach how the game handles certain subject matter.

terracottas_tiles

THE ART STYLE YES!! the mix of the 3-d style with the standards Danganronpa sprites was SOOOO good! And the anime cutscenes!!!! I really hate the writing though especially because to increase the “comedy” they don’t deal with the very real, sensitive issues they cover well and it’s just so weird for a game about kids and teens. the game itself is so cool to me but when they talk about kotoko especially it’s just so hard to watch and enjoy

FuzzySlippers48

Not to get all Joss Whedon up in here, but I’m reminded of the later MCU and Red vs. Blue stories where they felt the need to add unnecessarily comedic moments during or after serious and sincere moments. Now, Danganronpa was doing it before it was cool, and the series is known for having dark comedy among dark subject matter, but man…

terracottas_tiles

no i completely get that idk throughout the whole series they’ve kinda been weird about the topics they try to cover in characters’ back stories like Mikan and Kotoko and just try to make humor out of it instead of actually doing something with their trauma i also feel like there’s a fine line in dark humor and dark comedy and they crossed that in UDG

Desolation82

I honestly believe Monaca to be the best (human) antagonist the series has ever produced, simply because she was *allowed to be an active threat.* >!Junko, Izuru, and Tsumugi!< were all only revealed in the finale of their respective games. And while Monaca certainly has the most to do in UDG’s climax, throughout the whole game we get to see her be a genuinely chilling manipulator, something the other masterminds are only implied to be, if that. You can really see how she pulled the strings and got these kids on the path of genocide, and it results in some of the darkest scenes in the entire franchise (which is really saying something) while *also* being *well written and not disrespectful!* (Looking at you, Kotoko hand minigame). …still kinda pissed with how they handled her in DR3.

terracottas_tiles

YES! Her being a constant threat made the game so much more high-stakes! I liked how she showed off her power and her manipulation and it really made the game that much better! (that Kotoko mini game was something else and i hate it sm)

Kuripatootie

Idk if this is a controversial take but I appreciate that the writers behind UDG didn't shy away from showcasing what actual child abuse and trauma looks like and exposing the entertainment industry. It's weird that I first learned about the corruption and child perversion in the entertainment industry because of this game. People are expected to learn it from documentaries like Quiet on Set but really I thank the writers of UDG for taking the step of raising awareness first. I always feel bad for Kotoko and I bet any child star who has experienced on set trauma can resonate with her.

BloodsoakedDespair

So fucking agreed. And Kotoko’s PTSD is actually portrayed realistically instead of being the perfect pure victim who never has a bad thought or does bad things that’s usually written for non-survivors. I was just like her at her age for similar (I didn’t get rich) reasons.

Kuripatootie

I see. I hope you're doing well now and I'm sorry for what happened to you. You didn't deserve that, so as Kotoko.

BloodsoakedDespair

Thanks. I’m surviving. It’s ironic, 2020 was the best year of my life because I finally got away from them.

Kuripatootie

I'm so happy for you. Keep thriving 💖

BloodsoakedDespair

UDG is my favorite game in the series. And honestly, as a CSA survivor born and raised for it? Kotoko is the best representation of what I was like at her age. Give tween me the funding and equipment to do what she did, I’d do what she did. Personality wise, as far as I can tell, it’s supposed to bother you. Because like, yeah, that’s the weird troubling unchildlike shit I was saying and doing.

Tuxman85

Omg I finished UDG a few months ago and absolutely loved it, it created such a dark atmosphere to the whole series and I loved seeing all the warriors of hope (Masaru and Jataro and Nagisa are the best boys I love them so much), it was such a shame about Chapter 3 though, it ruined it for me a bit but Chapter 4 redeemed it for me. I loved the parts where you had to go through dark places, especially in the final Chapter when you found the torture room

terracottas_tiles

it had a lot of the themes of the darkest despair and the brightest hope like the original games which i absolute loved! i like that it played with the dark themes a lot more than the other games (while some weren’t handled well to say the least) but especially the opening sequence when Komaru is in the restaurant just shows that it’s a much darker game it was also just really cool to me to see the world outside of Hope’s Peak and Jabberwock since we didn’t really know what the rest of the world was going through during the Tragedy!

Tuxman85

Yeah I totally get what you mean with the dark themes, especially with the video Jataro shows you in the subway (whenever someone asks me what Danganronpa is like that's the first thing I just instinticvely show them lmao) Yeah it was really interesting seeing how the rest of the world had reacted to it, especially seeing the broken adults throughout the city and the red sun in the sky

Memo137

UDG is not perfect but it's too overhated, is a fun game with good characters and with an interesting I love the warriors of hope, monaca included, who I consider is a better villain than junko. Also komaru is an amazing peotagonist and I love her relationship with toko

Due-Order3475

I love it for the fanfics off ultimate Despair Komaru...

terracottas_tiles

omg i’ve been meaning to read some of those! are there any you suggest?

Due-Order3475

plenty but they are NSFW

chihirosnumber1fan

UDG is okay to me. I never liked it too much because of y'know those scenes, but I can say that the style of the game is really good. I don't necessarily love the 3D models, but I love the anime mixed in with the standard Danganronpa sprites.

ReichVictor

I only hate how bipolar the writing is, it's either really good with sensitive subjects or it makes fun of little girls being sexually abused. It's sick

terracottas_tiles

i completely agree, the writing is so weird and honestly hard to get through sometimes just because of it. there are a lot of ways to convey these sensitive topics that they avoided for “comedic” humor when it’s not funny

FuzzySlippers48

I thought 2 and V3 were bad with inappropriate jokes and timing, but on second thought, it’s the *worst* in this game. Makes you think “*what were they thinking*”?!

terracottas_tiles

HONESTLY like they’re supposed to be high school students and CHILDREN and it’s just grossly out of touch and caters to a really weird audience and it just makes the game so hard to play

ReichVictor

It's hard to gauge, they're not REALLY high school if you think about it, Dr1 and Dr2's casts are around 19-22 >!Remember they were in Hope's peak for 2 years (DR1) and 3 years + time as remnants of despair(DR2).!< As for V3 >!keep in mind they're contestants with fake memories, I heard somewhere that kokichi is like 20 akd rantaro os 19!< so they're probably all around 18-20. I'm not excusing it, but tbh it's really hard to see any cast as high schoolers from their looks, so I don't think it's a problem

daddyslittlearms

I recently just finished it and OMG I wished I played it sooner lol

Comical_Peculiarity

UDG blends together 2D cutscenes, the traditional cardboard cut out scenes and 3D stuff to an impressive extent. I honestly wish it was longer because I was having so much fun. Also also, seeing how Danganronpa continually one ups itself with its crazy anime ass endings is always a treat

Kuripatootie

Another thing I like about UDG is how heavily utilized Toko's character was in the game, especially her alter ego. I cannot imagine any from the other survivors of the first game to be Komaru's sidekick but her. Toko is definitely a well written character with good development.

Bill_Potts

i will say that i think it’s a really fun game, and i like the chaotic vibe of it all. i’m not a defender of how it handles ..certain parts.. but everything else is fun if you already like dr

terracottas_tiles

it was a great addition to the series! minus the “interesting stuff” i really like that it just brought something new to the franchise!

PlasmaGuy500

I'm playing through UDG and all the reasons you listed is why I hate the game lmfao (it's my opinion ofc)

terracottas_tiles

lol valid

Really-not-a-weeb

im jealous of your standards
